Title: Wax on, wax off...which one are you?
Post by: Gennysmom on December 12, 2007, 11:44:42 am
OK, so Lorenzo and I were having a somewhat interesting discussion about ear wax.  I no longer get wax in my AN ear.  He gets an overabundance.  I had translab and he had CK.  So just for curiosity sake, what kind of treatment did you have, do you have any hearing,  and what are your wax results?   And if you got a TransEar, did that change it yet again?  I'm assuming wax is produced when something in the ear is stimulated with sound, which makes me think Translabbers don't get any, but what about the others?

I had Translab surgery and I stil have ear wax. I clean out my ears about everyday and I always have some in the AN ear. I have a BAHA if that makes a difference...

I had retrosigmoid - I don't think there's a difference in ear wax, but I feel like I can go in deeper on the AN side.

Suboccipital, no wax in AN ear, never was a waxy person anyway!  Boy that Qtip feels good going in that AN side tho, it seems like it gets itchy and nothing feels better than a good Qtip massage.  ;)

Aha!  Finally some no waxers...was beginning to think it's just me!  Yes, a properly spun Q-tip really does the trick to scratch!  No worries folks, no deep dipping here, just on the outside part!  I use them every day and am very careful!

Wax free here to.  And I agree about the carefully placed q-tip scratcher.

I did find out at my very first ENT appointment that they cringe when you tell them you use q-tips in your ears.  I'm guessing ENT's have very waxy and dirty ears.  Geez, you can't do much else with a q-tip!

Lori ???

the thing with q-tips is, not only can one damage something by going in too far accident, but they can also leave all sorts of debris in the ears, like fluff and tiny cotton fragments, I think. Anyway, that's what I was told. Use them carefully. I do. What else can one use??

Ciao, Lorenzo  :)

Well, what do they then suggest you do to clean the inside of your ears?  Schedule monthly visits for ear cleaning?  Didn't their mothers teach them properly to swirl the qtip around between two fingers first so that there is no loose cotton before you insert it ever so gently into your ear never putting it in too far or you can poke a hole in your brain?   ;D

When I read this later I realized that it sound it like it was directed at someone in particular.  Lorenzo, hon, this wasn't directed at you my dear, I just get frustrated at Dr's statements like that because, yes, they do have a point, but how stupid do they think people are?   Sometimes I get a little crackers and don't think before I type.  Sorry 'bout that.  I use them mostly to get the water from a shower out of my ears though.  Can't stand for no wet ears, except for when the dogs lick 'em  ;)

I have had mid fossa done and then last year the trans lab with no loss of ear wax.  I then had the CSF leak surgery and the ear drum was removed and replaced by muscle.   I was told I would continue to have ear wax which I do but not as much as before or as in the other ear.
I think the deal with the q-tips is how some people use them and push the wax in deeper and harder up against the ear drum.       I use them too but try to just in the outer area.

I have read that the ear wax will just come out on it's own which I dispute. We occ have to put special stuff in old peoples ears at work to soften it and then try to flush it out.
A good question.        I wonder what we would find if we Google ear wax.     The answer might be somewhere on the internet.   Everything else is!      LOL!

Yep.. .I asked Dr. Brackmann more than once about this issue ... he told me to NOT to clean it out with anything! .. it will come out on its own ....

ps.. I still clean it out (q-tip) .. just not as much now.... (once a week)

More than anything I'm getting the droplets of water out from the shower.  I hate feeling like I have even a drop of water in my ear!!!  Getting the wax out is just an extra.

I did google ear wax yesterday.  I didn't have much time to peruse, but the production of wax doesn't have much to do with sound or anything.  but trauma to the ear can make more ear wax produced, so I'm guessing it's in the nerves somehow.   I'll let you know if I find anything more.

Funny, I was just noticing a decrease in wax on the AN side.  Not a complete loss of but a definite decrease.

I had CK 2 weeks ago.

I do believe this is the most interesting discussion ever produced on this forum!

The Great Ear Wax Debate of 2007

Hmmmmm........

I use the q-tips like squeegees to get the water and whatever else comes with it outta my ears post-shower. A little wax, a little sea water, some sand, a few starfish.....

No! Just kidding!!!!

I haven't noticed any increase or decrease in the amount of wax or anything else in my AN ear. I am really careful with the AN ear beacuse I can't really tell how far I'm poking the thing into my ear because there is no sound, which acts like an early warning system. I can't imagine how nasty anyone's ears would be if they didn't clean them out with something occasionally. Eewwww. I just never use a dry q-tip in a dry ear. If one feels particularly itchy, I'll use a little baby oil on the q-tip.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Well if you are lucky enough to have facial palsy this is what you do…

You get breath right strips to hold the paralyzed nostril open at night so you can breath without being an addict and having to go to AA meetings (Afrin Anonymous  :D ) … and then you get out the box of Q-tips. Dip one Q-tip in petroleum Jelly and swab the inside of your nose so it won’t dry out during the night.

I tell you buy stock in Q-tips … one day you will be rich! LOL  :D

Now lets see what sort of "visual" our Capt Deb will come up with...  ;) ;D

No wax on the AN side, but it does feel like I can "poke a hole in my brain" if I keep going.

Actually, it's very useful to think about how to when you have a hole in your head, can't have any intracranial pressure, and the pain meds are backing you up.  Good to fix from the get go than have to suffer or start a leak or something.  A valid concern, unlike ear wax!   ;D

Lorenzo,

I was still out-of-state in my post op recovery stay and that percocet (sp?) pain med was my real back-er-upper problem.

I came across this thread … and found the remedies suggested most helpful and moving LOL  :D ;)

Keep moving forward!

More wax for sure in both ears.  Interesting very interesting.  I thought this post was about cars and the physical disabilties some have.  Imagine my surprise when I finally read this thread.  We could have used the other post long before now.  Thanks for including the link to it.

I candle waxed my AN ear for the first time like 6 months ago. I thought some of the packing they used melted and came out in my ear. For those who have never tried this, Go to a health store and get natural bees candle ear wax. OMG Are you going to be surprised , just try it!!! Not by yourself though you could catch fire.

Beth if you can talk my son into it I would give it a try.  I think that he will just think I have lost it and want nothing to do with it.  Thank you for the info.   16

hey guys,

Can I just say  :o  WOOOH!, Don't go sticking stuff in your ears, no matter how careful you are it is so not a good idea, even if it itch's like mad don't give in, I would never stick anything in my ear, a friend of mine is a chemist and when I asked her about using some Q-tips she strongly advised me not to.

If you wish to get wax out of your ears this is what you do......

Do this at night before bed, Add a small drop (and I do mean small) of olive oil into the ear, get a cotton wool bud and roll it your hand and make it tear drop shape, mold this into your ear so its tight, go to bed and in the morning the wax should be on the cotton wool not in your ear.

the olive oil loosens the wax and the cotton warms it up so that it melts and runs onto the cotton wool, give it a try, you may need to do it a few nights at a time for the best results.

hope it works for you, I use this method for my children.

XxX cheryl.  :-*

I do to... I had a teacher once tell us that the only thing you should stick in your ear is your elbow.

I can picture you all now trying to stick your own elbow in your ear...  I think you'd have to be very flexible.
