Title: Pet Therapy
Post by: Captain Deb on December 02, 2007, 10:46:45 am
Hi Family!

It has been a really rough year for me since I lost my beloved Ursa who nursed me through my surgery and subsequent 4 years of unexpected headache hell. I have quit walking my road because it is very winding and has no shoulders to speak of and I had trained her to "hear" the cars for me and make a beeline for me and velco herself to my legs when one came zooming around a curve. She walked beside me without a leash. She was a Black Lab and very calm natured and unbelievably smart and obedient.  She could sense a migraine coming on me and would lay in bed with me until it went away. Losing her very suddenly in Oct of 06 was devastating.

Dr Love and I have decided to adopt another pup and have found a  breeder who has a pregnant female whose pups will be ready late January! They are.... (what else for a chocolate-tanker-plundering lady-pirate)...Chocolate Labs!
A Chocolate Pup for a chocoholic! I'm so excited that I'm doing this!

All of you people out there with pre-treatment anxieties and post-treatment issues know how important having a pet around you is. (Thinking of Static on this one!) I have felt that someting is missing around this house for a year. It has just felt empty. I have felt empty. (I'm a veterinarian's daughter--we always had lots of critters.)

This lil brown puppy will need a name.  I'm taking suggestions. Also would love input on how your pet has helped you through your AN journey.

Thanks!

"Hershey" ?  ;) :D

Cheers,

P.S. My yellow lab is "Sandy". Both his parents were chocolate however in their litter were 8 males - 4 yellow and 4 chocolate. He has turned out to be a self-trained service dog for me too.

I have a Lab mix too !!  I've always had a dog -- as a kid and now... they are truly mans (and womans) best friend .. true unconditional love... they prove that hatred is a learned response.

How about Baci?  It's a chocolate candy made by Perugina & the word means Kiss...

I'm very jealous of anyone with a pet - I'm highly allergic to dogs & cats - when I lived in Maine I had a bloodhound I loved, I was always broken out head to toe & lived on Benadryl......

So happy to hear about your new addition.  How about Cocoa?

I have a cockapoo, Charly, that has been with me every step of the way.   He is 2 years old and I've had him since he was 8 weeks.  He is my first dog and It is hard to imagine what life would be without him.   He has offered me unconditional love and friendship.

Best wishes with your new pup.

Congrats Deb!  I'm glad to hear you are going ahead with getting a pup!  Roxy and Zoey think you should wait until you get him or her to see what the personality is like before you find a name.  It's a good idea to get some thought of, but you might name her Zippy and she ends up acting like a Lumpy, if ya know what I mean!  Anyway, here's hoping January comes really fast for ya, I know I'd be going crackers if I had to wait a whole month or so until I was gonna bring home my little darling!  Time to start getting the nursery ready!

... that and rawhides for the teething stage  :D . Nothing is sacred to a puppy - they chew on shoes, paint brushes, irrigation, bedding plants, dig up your spring bulbs (for sure if planted with bonemeal)... you almost get mad at them until you realize where "puppy eyes" come from.

So who is going to get up in the night with the puppy. Interesting that my husband slept through the kids crying in the night ... but always gets up for the dog LOL :D

Then there is the lab near a body of water (ie can't resist) and the wet-dog smell in the car ride home... ;)

Oh what joy! Well Captian Deb if you are off line more than usual- we will know why.

Deb, I'm so happy for you... I've never had a dog.(I'm allergic to dogs and cats..)... I heard recently that there are dogs that  cause less allergic reactions.  My husband and I have been thinking about getting that kind of a dog.... might next year after both our girls move out.
Can't wait to hear more about your puppy in January.

We have river front property, we just walk down the driveway and plop! we are right in the Watauga river. Not very wide, maybe 50 feet and just a few feet deep, but if we wade upstream a bit there's a pretty deep hole for swimming.  Great trout fishing, too.  My Ursa never chewed up a thing! Just her chew toys. I work at home so I'll be able to watch her and give her enough exercise so she won't get nervous or frustrated.

Marqaret and Nancyann ... some breds of dogs have dont have fur but its more like hair.. does not shed like fur *and does not get all over the house* it keeps growing longer and longer and you have to get it cut all the times like we do for ours! these dogs are less of a allergic problem...

we have one dog... and 2 cats. the cats are brother and sister.. and like most brothers and sisters.. once in a while.... they fight -- and its like a fur bomb goes off... cat hair is everywhere and screams like they are killing each other..  and the dog actually trys to make them stop -- gets between them -- something I'm sometimes afraid to do .

I was around a Wheaton Terrier (?sp) a couple of years ago & had no problems at all -  unfortunately I've lived in a condo for 10 years now that doesn't allow dogs.  When I win the lotto & buy a house, a Wheaton Terrier is coming with me! (but boy do I love bloodhounds - they are the most loving dogs I've ever met)...

Love the Lab puppies!  Great picture.  No Hershey names though, Hershey is moving the plant to Mexico!  How sad for PA.  I think it is hard to name a baby until you see it!  Whatever you decide will be perfect.
I wouldn't have known what to do without my Pug when I was recuperating.  She was my constant companion and my "ears."  My baby Pug has saved me many times since Sara Sunshine passed away in August and now my new little Boston Terrier Miss Martha Jane warms my heart.  She makes me feel like I can take care of something else because she is making great strides.  I guess we help each other.  I recommend pet therapy for everyone.
Wet noses are the best!

Brenda

Captain Deb, we had a 13 year old black lab (Sheta) and we put her down (she had cancer) in 1989 and we still cry over losing her. She was the most friendly dog, everyone loved her. However, we got a white german shepherd about 7 years ago. She is the BEST - dog hair and lots of it! She is like the one you had she doesn't need a leash and walks and run with us and never leaves our side. She has a mean bark and is a great watch dog!

When I was recovering from my AN, my shepherd and two cats sat with me in my bedroom while I had to administer antibiotics via a a pic line 6 hours a day. My pets never left my side. They sat at my feet and watched me. They knew something was wrong (probabaly cuz I looked like crap.)

I work out of my house and they sit in my office all day. The cats jump on my desk and mess my papers up and walk on my laptop but they entertain me which is great since I have no one to talk too during the day. When I am tired one of them comes and sits next to me. If I am happy they want to play and if I am hungry - well so are they.

A brown lab is a great choice. I have to agree with some of the other folks, I like the pirate thing...Patch, Patches,  Hook, Captain..oh well, I can't think of anymore. Whatever you name it, being a LAB, it will love it no matter what!

Love reading your posts. You are a neat lady!

Okay, I'm a little slow, but that's nothin new.....just found this posting and I think it's terrific Deb!

I am so happy for you, as I know the importance of a faithful companion to help you through those tuff and ruff days!  Blu, my son's bullmastiff, was by my side CONSTANTLY when I recuped at his house one week after surgery.  He came to our house just before Wilma hit us (eye went over our house) and was my "ever faithful" companion on our walks that I used as therapy.  He seems to know about the not hearing thing, noises being too loud, when I'm growing weak in the legs and about to fall backwards.  He'll nuzzle my hand at these times, come to a complete halt and makes me stop to stand a while to recuperate a bit so I can then make it home safely.  I didn't put two and two together as to why he decided it was time to lay down in the grass, but then again, I'm slowwwwww to catch on.  These quiet moments helped me in more ways than one!  Now we have our daughters bullmastiff.  She's much bigger than Blu and it is Blu who provides the teaching to Zara to stay calm.  They don't mind my bumping into them on our walks and will move to one side so I have more room to stagger around.  I would like to know your lessons on how you taught your lab to protect you when a car came up on your deaf side.

January isn't too far away Deb, I'm very excited for you.  I told hubby when the kids come for their significant others, we're getting our own bullmastiff!

Eric taught Ursa that one. When we would be out walking and heard a car he would call for her with a very urgent tone in his voice and pretty soon she just put two and two together: sound of car means come "right now" and sit by Mommy. Pretty soon he didn't even need to be there. She just knew to do it. Smart dog.

I really love hearing all these stories of how your pets aided your recoveries! They are just great.

I wanted to name her Bonney after notorious lady pirate Anne Bonney, but Eric had a dog named Bonnie who met an untimely end a long time ago and it would too painful for him.  Need to research more notorious lady pirates!

I had a friend who had a chocolate lab named Askem.  So when she'd be out on a walk and people would stop to pet him and ask his name , she'd just say "Askem".  And of course they would look at her like she was crazy.  Ok, well, maybe she is, but it was good for a few laughs when some people would actually ask the dog his name.

My golden retriever was a good caretaker to me too.  She would sleep right by the side of my bed and stick her cold wet nose in my face every so often.  Now that she knows I'm feeling better, she practically knocks me over when I get up in the morning - it's like she hasn't seen me in weeks or something.  I still think she likes the kids better - they're the ones that have to share their cookies and are more likely to drop something good to eat on the floor for her to clean up.

We're thinking of getting another one to keep her company too.  We had to put down our greyhound last year and you can tell she misses him.  It's so sad.

Can't wait to see pictures of the new deckhand.  I like the name Captain someone suggested.  How about Schooner?  Or Dinghy, if it's like most lab puppies!

Capt,
Shouldn't a pirate dog be named ScallyWag?  Other suggestions; Booty, Blunder, Grog.

PS We have a 10 month old Samoyed.  He's been a great reason to get out for walks.  I'll see if I can dig up a photo to post.

Gonna be a wench dog, folks.  I'd call her Schooner in a hearbeat if she was gonna be a he. I looked up she-pirate names. Seems there was a pirate named Sadie the Goat who plundered the Carolina coast in the early 1800's.

Sadie is a good one, Zoey almost got Sadie but that was too lady like for her, she's a little to crazy for a name like that!  Zoey suits her better :)  The two of mine are now wrestling all over the house as I write this.  After we had some snow yesterday, then rain last night, they ran through all the puddles this morning.  They had a blast.   Sometimes when they goof around with each other, they talk too, most of the time it's Roxy who does the talking and it's so funny when she does.  It's especially cute when they are playing tug o' war with a toy (instead of each others ears or faces).  They are very protective of each other though, so I know that when they do play like that, it is just play, after all, they don't have hands so they have no choice but to use their mouths.  Getting a playmate for Zoey was a good choice, I'm glad they have each other because as much time as we were spending with Zoey, she needed more and now they have each other :)  My husband works nights some times and Zoey keeps my feet warm and Roxy cuddles up in my arms.  When I open my eyes in the morning, she looks at me and gives me puppy kisses.  What a way to wake up in the morning!

Can't wait to see your pup Captain!  Sadie is good!  I'll think on this!!!!  My neighbors have a brand new chocolate lab puppy (someone threw her out of a window of a moving car and they rescued her).  She's a sweetie.  They named her Coco, and it fits.

My Lhasa puppy, Rinnie (Nee Tenzing Rinchen Pasang) has been the best since surgery.  She completely adapted on day one to the fact that I couldn't whistle for her anymore, and she is my ears.  She always sits next to me in every room, and she's not a yapper, but will bark if there's anyone or anything near the house.  She's the one that woke me up and let me know something was wrong when my neighbor's house wen't up in flames a month ago.  It would be so much harder without her being my ears.  I used to be a cat person, still love them, but they just can't help like a dog can.  I will never be without another dog again.

Thanks Matti.  Get Cosmo steps so she can climb up anyway!  I have to lift Roxy up because our bed is kinda high for her still, but she just sits there and waits for me.  She is 1-1/2 yrs younger than Zoey and yet so much calmer, go figure!  Kathleen, I think the person who threw the dog out of the window of a moving car should have that done to them to see how they would like it!  That is so horrible.  Thank goodness for your neighbors being good people and taking her in to rescue her.  I can't imagine the kind of person who would do something like that to a helpless animal.  What kind of world do we live in anyway?  Something like that could never happen here.  Seriously, sometimes my husband says that this house is maintained solely for the comfort and convenience of the dogs, especially when I told him last summer that he could get an 18' pool only if he built a ramp so that Zoey could get into it! LOL  The things we do for our dogs because they do so much for us and ask for so little in return.  There's nothing better than a furry hug and a big wet slobbery kiss first thing in the morning, and I'm not talkin about Mr. Static either!   ;)

Set up an account here: http://photobucket.com/ (http://photobucket.com/) , It's free. upload the images from your 'puter onto your photobucket site, then under the pic will be 4 boxes to choose from. Click on the bottom box (IMG code) and paste the code into the text of your reply message. It will come up as code, but will appear as a picture once you post it. You don't need to click on the picture icon (on the reply message) or anything. Photobucket does it for you.

OMG Lori, great pic by the way, but when I scrolled down to it, it gave me quite a jolt!  Your golden looks like my first golden, Ginger.  She was the perfect dog and was always there for me when I came home from my surgery.  I had to put her down just last year and boy it was a really tough time.  They are such sweet dogs and the two I have now follow me all through the house and sleep with me at night!  Deb, you are going to do just fine, but I still think you should be thinking in pairs  :-X  Just think, when you can't entertain because of a headache, they can entertain each other  ;)

Oh, great idea Deb!  Get two puppies - then you can get a male and name him Schooner!  Lab puppies are always so calm and docile...ha ha.  I had a lab mix years ago and she was nuts from day one until the day we had to put her down when she was 16 years old.  But her personality more than made up for her doggie ADHD.  She was also thrown out of a moving car onto the side of a busy road when she was about 8 weeks old.  I can't believe people can do that.

My sister assures me that my golden will definitely be going to heaven - after putting up with the kids - it's the least she deserves.  She gets used as a pillow, a step stool, a couch...she has clothes put on her, barrettes put in her hair, mardi gras beads...she gets poked in the eyes, her ears pulled.. and she just sits there with her tail and whole back end wagging and follows the kids around all day.  She has a lot more patience than I do!

Speaking of big, we went to visit the parent chocolate labs on Saturday--they are huge! The pups were born on Thursday night, but were in the birthing kennel and we couldn't see them yet. I think I am getting a high energy dog here! Maybe it's what I need to get me a little more active--I'm a bit of a slug and unmotivated to get out and exercise or take a walk.

The parents are absolutely beautiful dogs and a bit on the untame side, but very affectionate. Untame probably because they aren't fixed. I'm not fixed either and I'm pretty untame!

Eric's new project is to build a proper pen and covered doggie deck for her. We pick her up in 6 weeks! I'm figuring out how to hide my shoes already.

You may want to keep your shoes at your neighbors house.  My lab somehow managed to open closet doors to get to my shoes - some of them brand new - still in the box!  I still haven't figured out how she did it.

One day i came home from work and she had knocked one of those big tins with the 3 kinds of popcorn in it off the counter, got the lid off and ate all the popcorn.  I only knew it was her and not our greyhound because the caramel popcorn was still stuck in her fur all around her head - she looked like a black lion with a brown mane!

She stayed in her puppy stage for about 3 years and then finally calmed down and was normal.  I suggest buying a lot of cheap flip flops that you aren't too attached to!

It's a good thing they are such lovable dogs - it makes all their antics worthwhile.  The fact that they're cute helps too!

None of my girls have ever eaten any of our shoes.  They've sucked on a few socks in their time, but they've never destroyed any.  There are so many dog toys around this house, you'd think I have a toddler.  Oh wait, I do!  Their favorites were always rope toys, and they each have these treat balls.  They are about 6" in diameter and hollow with a recessed hole, and we put small treats in them and they push them around the house with their nose or their paws, it's hilarious!  Zoey is very meticulous about it, but Roxy is like on crack or something when she does it LOL!  They are so much fun to watch with those balls.  OMG, they are definitely alot of fun in pairs.  We can't keep a stuffed toy alive in this place for more than 5 minutes once Zoey sets her sights on it.  She bites a tiny hole in it somewhere and starts pulling all the stuffing out then gets the squeaker, kills it, and spits it out!  Roxy has learned to do the same.  We have one toy who has survived, it's a bunny and we call it baby.  hey also like the legs off of jeans.  When my jeans get old and I make cutoffs out of them, or would otherwise throw them out, I cut off the legs and tie a knot in the middle and we play tug with them.  Give that pup plenty to play with and your shoes will surely survive!  Make sure you give her a big golden hug from my girls and me too!

Ursa never chewed a shoe either, Eric was home all day with her and she had plenty of toys and exercise. I think that makes a difference. Dogs chew on stuff they aren't supposed to because they are bored. I plan to be with this pup 24/7 or she will be penned in the kitchen or with us.  If we had to leave the house, we just took Ursa with us. We even took her to the movies, she loved being in the car, it was her den on wheels. The truck was her favorite. When we would work in the garden, we would open the truck door and she would climb in and just hang out there and watch us.

I'll be on the lookout for some of those treat toys, Karen. Aren't there some that you put peanut butter in?

Yeah, you can put peanut butter in a kong, or you can just put peanut butter on your finger and let her lick it off of your hand.  I call that bonding LOL!  Also, it's fun to put some peanut butter in the roof of her mouth and watch her get it out, that's called cute!   ;)

I cleaned out my sock drawer and saved them all--really good thick ones to knot up and make toys out of.  Ursa loved sock toys. We always had a couple of "baby dolls" hanging around the house. She would put one in her mouth and then bat her tennis balls around the house soccer style.  We called it puppy soccer.  It was hilarious. I always wanted to put her in a large room with no furniture, like a basketball court, and let her have at it.

We had a black lab/golden retriever mix and she was the sweetest dog. She loved pine cones and could chew a brand new green pine cone into little pieces in a matter of minutes. Every Christmas season when I hang up my wreath it reminds me when Sheta got loose only to go a few houses down the street to find a beautiful hand made pine cone wreath on my neighbors front door. She jumped on my neighbors door and pulled down her pine cone wreath and ate every single pine cone. When she wasn't eating them she wanted you to throw them and she would play fetch for hours. She never got tired.

TP,

I love the Christmas Pine Cone wreath story! Hilarious!

Back in my youth I had 3 cats living indoors. (Family allergies has us only with one barn cat living in the garage as to not become coyote h'orderves for their howling holiday party outdoors...) One year these 3 crazy cats all climbed up the freshly decorated live Christmas tree and managed to smash every glass ball into a zillion pieces as it timbered over … not to mention that once we did finally upright it again… they had to redecorate anything dangling on the bottom limbs.

So far my lab has not ever used our live Christmas tree to mark his territory …as he does the other trees on the acreage.  :D We’ll be sure to not hang any pine cone decorations… ;)

Cheers,

4

TP - the wreath story is hilarious - but I'm guessing your neighbor didn't think so!

Static - Have you ever read the book "Life is Good"?  It's written by Trixie Koontz who is author Dean Koontz's golden retriever.  (I think she had a little help with it).  It's written from the point of view of the dog.  It's really funny, cute and one of those books that just makes you feel good.  I've bought copies for some dog-lover friends and they enjoyed it.  You should check it out if you haven't already.

Lori - you know what - my neighbor was probably the sweetest lady around. She had little girls who were also very sweet and polite. She may have cussed my dog out (which I would not blame her at all) but she never said a cross word about my dog or anyone  - unlike me  :o The neat thing about Labs is everyone usually loves them and they are just fun to hang out with.

4 - your coyote kitty cat story is funny. I bet you live in a great place. I can imagine how fun it must be living in the northwest. We've been there a few times and the land is beautiful! Truly God's country.

OK, Dr Love just returned from Lowe's with a truckload of lumber to build a shed roof on our doggie deck! Steps, too, leading out to a pen. Gonna have to reinforce the pen as we are gonna have a much younger more energetic doggie. I'm practicing doggie calls and pretending I have the pup in the studio.

I am just so excited and scared at the same time. I had an 18 hr migraine on Wednesday. Who's gonna take her out to pee and poo if this happens when Dr Love is at work? I can hardly take myself out to pee when I have one of these. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Keep lots of newpapers handy, too.

I'm loving all the pet stories. Keep 'em comin'! Pinecone eatin' doggies. Hah!

I had a migraine last night too. I only get them when I am way over tired and stressed (had 3  in 3 days when I got my AN diagnosis and talked to surgeons)....wonder if it's the 'season of the year' .....too much to do, Guilt on not having people over for Christmas dinner and the day (don't really feel up to it this year), etc.  anyway..

I have been reading all this about dogs and have been seriously thinking about getting one (I've never had one before).

Merry Christmas to all..... and all the pets too.

OK I'm officially having a Puppy Shower. Sadie is named after a famous female pirate name of Sadie the Goat who plundered the Carolina coast in the early 18th century. A Pirate Puppy Shower it shall be. No specific date.  It'll sort of be an ongoing thing. A lot of you already have me address. Those that haven't--message me and I'll hook ye up! Sadie loves Pink!

These pet stories are sooo cute.  We don't have a pet of our own now, we have 'grand-dogs', AND the golden retriever is named Sadie also.  Our daughter bought her for her husband on their first Christmas together.  He decided to name her Sadie, then our daughter told him that was MY first name!  She called me, laughing, and told me what name he had chosen.  I told her that as long as she was pretty, that he could name her Sadie.  And, of course, Sadie is beautiful and a source of great entertainment for us all.

Christmas morning they all came over for breakfast.  We gathered in a little circle hug to ask the blessing.  Sadie couldn't stand being outside of the circle and insisted on being let into the middle of our circle.  After she got inside, she stood straight up on her hind legs and was looking me in the face to see what was going on!  That morning we had prayer and giggles before breakfast!

Congrats Captain Deb on choosing a beautiful Sadie for yourself!  She is adorable and looks like she will snuggle really well!

I'm just going nuts nesting.  Dr Love is outside building the best doggie deck in the world and I'm rearranging and puppy proofing the living room. We've decided to do the wire crate thing. We tried an airline crate with Ursa and she hated it, but we got her when she was older and she was pretty housetrained already and not a chewer. I already know this pup is gonna end up sleeping in the bed with us, but what the heck, I'll try the crate till she learns to poo outdoors! The due date is Jan 21! That's when we pick her up. Thanks for all your encourangement you folks. I was really apprehensive at first, but all these dog stories and personal anecdotes have really reassured me that I'm doing a good thing for myself, Dr Love and this pup. What's a family without a dog, after all?

hello captain deb.

looks like you are getting a pup.  i have a two year golden retriever.  i started riding a bike after 10 years because of him.  i haven't been on a bike for 10 years.  he rides next to me with my hand on his leash gripping the handle bars.  he is able to keep me balanced during my ride.  we stay on the sidewalk of course, but it has been a great bond.  we were able to go out for a short ride today.  60 degree's here in Chicago.  Thunderstorms rolling in as i type.  good luck with everything.

Wow, Hawk, looking at your sig line you have been through a lot! Congrats on getting on your bike again after 10 years.  Mine's hanging in the garage collecting dust! I live in a mountainous rural area--no sidewalks here! Treacherous riding even with good balance and hearing. I'm thinking of the Cesar Millan-type rollerblades for the park--there is a paved path there. Yeehaw!

PS What is a Gunderson flap?

That's what Nancy and I said!  See the topic under, strangely enough, Gunderson Flap.  It's really interesting.  It amazes me that there are doctors out there smart enough to come up with these procedures.

Mark, I think if I tried to ride my bike while holding onto my golden - I'd wind up in Chicago (and I live in Nashville!).  She'll be 3 on the 19th of this month, and very much a puppy in some ways.  Wish i had half as much energy as she does!

Congrats on the new baby girl, Cap't Deb!  She's a keeper, that one.  I can smell her puppy breath waaaaay over here in Vancouver, WA!  I've recommended this book before, but all you doggy lovers, if you haven't already read this, get yourself a copy of Marley and Me by John Grogan.  Read it, read it, read it.  I can't recommend this book highly enough!  It was on the best seller list for months.  You'll laugh, you'll cry.  Mostly, you'll laugh.

The only pup we have around here is of the wild variety.  This past week a coyote has been hanging around the neighborhood.  I have a picture of him in our backyard.  I'll have to figure out how to get it on here.

I finally got that copy of "Life is Good" byTrixie and Dean Koontz and it really is a feel good type of book.  Good for anyone to read, kids, adults, just about anyone!  It's very easy reading, but the pictures and the dogs thoughts, it's really great!  As I was reading it, I was thinking to myself, that's exactly something my golden would do!  Thanks so much for recommending that one to me!  Capt, aren't you getting that baby soon?

Karen, I knew you'd like it!
Sue, I love the coyote picture.  My in-laws get them in their back yard in AZ every now and then, but I've never gotten to see one.  Every time I hear their dog barking in the middle of the night when we're there, I get up to look and see if there's one back there, but no luck yet.  We don't have any good wildlife here.  Although we did have a snake in the front yard last summer.  I don't think that counts though.

Deb, did ya' get the puppy yet?  The wait is killing all of us!

I already have the crate set up in the living room and the bed in the laundry basket (the crib) and the food bowls and toys. I'm leaving my nice oriental rug down for now--I figure I'll get to her quick enough--the rest of our house is hardwood floors.  I'm feeding her Eukanuba.  You can just kick the doo-doo right out the door with that stuff! Sadie is indeed named after a lady pirate! Sadie the Goat indeed plundered and pillaged the Hudson River area, not the Carolinas as I had previously thought.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Street_Gang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Street_Gang)

Miss Anne Bonney and Mary Reade were the notorious Caribbean and Spanish Main plunderers, but Dr Love liked the name Sadie, so it stuck!

Puppy proofed and ready to go! I've made about 15 toys from old socks, tennis balls, and jeans legs.  Plus I got some puppy kong things that you squirt stuff into and stuff treats into. Also there's a giant cage in my itty bitty living room.  Looks like a zoo. Sadie and I will both fit in the cage if things get out of hand for Dr Love.  I want to crate train her so I can do a bit of traveling with her and take her to visit people that are allergic to dogs, like my poor daughter-in-law who has sneezing fits if she gets near a dog.

I'm so excited! Tomorrow's the day!

OK, Folks, here she is! Miss Sadie St John all her chocolaty glory!

Didn't get much sleep last night, but she took to the crate beautifully and has even taken tennis balls and stashed them in there. Had a big adventure today and walked her out to a big open field and had her first real outdoor run! Run! Run! Run! Then crashed out in Dr Love's armpit:

Of course I got all goofy when we first brought her home and dressed her up as what else......

Please don't report me to the ASPCA!

Aw, Deb, she's gorgeous!  She looks like she wants to play with Zoey and Roxy!  They can tire each other out while we trade HA and puppy stories! LOL  I wish you all the best with her  :)  Happiness is a warm puppy, it really is.  I'm sure by now you know exactly what I mean!  Have fun!!

Oh my goodness - look at that little face!  That is the cutest puppy!  I'm sure she'll be one spoiled pooch before long!  I don't think you could be mad at her even if she did chew up all your shoes!

Hope you're having fun!

You are so lucky I think she is the cutest puppy I have ever seen (well except for my 2 babies).  Be sure to post pictures everyday and I think I speak for everyone when I say I want to know every thing she does in all of her cuteness!  I love the picture of you and your new girlfriend you are both very beautiful.  Oh and by the way just refer back to this when she chews all of your shoes "Pirates don't need shoes anyways" LOL.  16

What's the matter, Capt. Deb?  Sadie gotcha by the pirate sox?  Or does she have you so worn out from her puppy energy that you're too tired to type?

Well,  folks, this pup is wearin my poor ole sorry a$$ OUT! Wears me out then she just passes out!

Notice puppy bite marks on hand--ouch! Too much rasslin'! About the only time I can take pictures of her are when she's asleep or I just get a blur lunging at the camera

Here's my "show dog" showing her belly again!

I did get a good one of her first walk with a little bit of snow that we had. She loved it--can't wait till we have more than an inch or so!

I love puppies and she is soooo cute.  Those puppy teeth are killers I used to wear my leather isotoners to protect my hands.  Keep the pictures coming when you can.   ;D 16

Congratulations Deb on your faithful companion (not talkin bout Dr. Lurv).  May you have many days of happiness, joy and companionship only a dog brings to the "pack".  She's gorgeous and her name suits her well!
