Title: Will sound theraphy cure tinnitus ?
Post by: prabakaran on September 19, 2007, 01:10:27 am
Hi ,

Will sound theraphy make the tinnitus worry get any better?
Have anyone practiced it?

It really worries me when I get a phone call while having food. I am forced to pick the mobile in the left hand and place it round the right ear and speak . It really looks acqward for any onlooker. I do this since I could not use my left AN ear and also could not use my left hand while having food.

Cheers,
Praba

Hello Praba,
My admittedly limited inderstanding of Tinitus Therapy is that they train you to not notice it so much.   For example, if someone is listening to dinner conversation, they can hear the dog barking next door, but they usually block out the dog from from consciousness.  They are not thinking about the dog, so the barking doesn't intrude into one's thoughts.  If you think about it, there are many examples in everyday life where we exhibit selective listening.  With all the mechanical noises in "modern" society, we have to.
I've had my Tinitus for so long, that I only notice it if I think about it.
Regards,
  Rob

Since relaxation and peace are so important for the nerves, why not turn off the mobile at meal time?  Enjoy and savor your company and the meal before you.

Hi, Praba:

I'm not aware of what 'sound therapy' is but I have reservations that anything external can really decrease tinnitus, which is internally caused (and which most AN patients suffer from, to some degree).  I simply ignore my tinnitus, as many do.  I don't have much choice.  It isn't going away and I have to function as best I can, and I do.  I believe most tinnitus sufferers follow a similar philosophy regarding their tinnitus.  I trust that this sound therapy may help you somewhat.  Meanwhile, don't talk with your mouth full.   ;)

Praba,
Hi. I've had tinnitus for 20 years.  Right now it is really loud. That and I have severe hearing loss in that ear and haven't been diagnosed with an AN, though I have all the symptoms.

Thursday I am picking up a sound generator (simulator/masking device - whatever you want to call it).  This new tinnitus specialist is the one and only person who has described how this helps.  She said that it gives me control. It's white noise that I can try to match to my tinnitus as far as the volume goes.  Then, as I get used to it, I have control to turn it down if I want.

So, it seems more like empowerment.  I can't do anything about my tinnitus, and over the past 20 years, I've gone crazy knowing that I can't.  At least this puts something in my hands.  I can keep you posted as to how it works.
