Title: Contacts after surgery
Post by: Pembo on August 01, 2007, 03:46:45 pm
I wore contacts for 15 years before my AN surgery. After surgery, I have facial paralysis and my eye does not tear. Over the past three years the blink has returned somewhat and I have can now feel if there is an eyelash in my eye. I have a punctual plug and use Restasis.  These two things happened 2 years post-op, prior to that I had to use lacrilube at least 3-4 times a day. Now I never use it.  I only taped my eye shut in the very beginning and I never got a gold weight.

I recently was referred to a contact lens specialist (who knew there was such a thing). He fitted me with a type of lens that retains moisture and now after 3 years in glasses I can wear contacts again. I have to use drops every couple of hours but so far they feel great.

Just some info for anyone else out there who may be in my situation........

Thanks, Pembo!

What kind of contacts are they?  I would like to try again, but I would like to try with something someone else has and works.
Thanks for your post.

Sorry, I didn't check back on my post! I am wearing Proclear lenses by Cooper Vision. The doc told me that they are made of a material that retains moisture. For example if you left it laying out on a counter, it would take a longer to time to dry out than a regular lens.

I've had them over a month now and they work great. The only problem I have is if when putting the lens in the first time I need to take it out and try again for whatever reason and I irritate the eye...I can forget about wearing them for a few hours. It only takes a little thing to irritate the AN eye.

Good luck to you Brendalu. Our University hospital has a huge eye dept and there are 3-4 docs who are called contact lens specialist. Not sure where you are, but maybe call a large hospital for a referral.
