Title: Grandma's Cures
Post by: Obita on January 21, 2007, 04:33:31 pm
Hi Gang:

I just received a email full of "Grandma's Cures".  The first one on the list was Gatorade for a headache.

It said to drink two glasses of Gatorade and headache pain will be gone almost immediately.

Too good to be true?  Probably, but I thought it was worth posting for sufferers that have tried everything.  Why not try one more thing?

Kathy

Lorenzo,

Do fried scorpions work since I had that one time in Beijing?  They were not too bad.  Tasted like chips.  I take that crickets taste the same.  My tinnitus is bothering me lately.  I will eat anything to rid of that cricket in my ear!!!  ;)

cure all for what ails you... a great, hot, bowl of chicken soup! Medically proven effective and heck, if Grandma made it, even better!

(had not heard about the Gatorade! Keep it constantly on hand for other medical issues I have.. will have to try it out!)

I had chicken soup today both for lunch and dinner (I made a big pot of it Saturday) and it did make me feel better but has since worn off.  I hope I'm not getting anything more than a cold!  My throat feels like its closing and I have those dry coughs which makes the headaches worse!  I can't get warm no matter what I do!  I tried the gatorade thing but didn't notice any difference (except that I had to pee)!  Brucifer, I was going to make chicken and dumplins today but the soup was easier because it was already made and just needed heat.  Maybe I'll make the dumplins tomorrow (gonna save some to fling at Lorenzo  :-X).  Gatorade does help after you've had a stomach virus  tho! ;)

Chicken soup is comfort food, especially with bits of chicken in it and some fine pasta! Oh la la, it was gooooooooood... Ate the chicken roasted first, then kept half of it for other uses, made broth out fo the carcass, and now have still some left.
LEt me know when you fling the dumplings, I'll get ready with the pot to catch them!
Ciao, ye soup lovers

So Lorenzo,

Where do I get the crickets, specialty store ???
Can you cook them up in tomatoe sauce, or are they best eaten raw, fried, boiled, sauteed......
DON'T LEAVE ME HANGING MAN !!!!
ANYTHING TO DEADEN THIS TINNITUS.

Well, the organic ones are best, and those are available in your nearest field, in season. Of course, seasonality is important, so frozen ones do not have the same effect. They go mushy when defrosted, creating no sound.
As for cooking, well, depends on the type of tinnitus. Boiling is for bubbling sounds, simmering in tomato sauce might be good for slightly less intrusive sounds, raw is for cases of intermittent crunching noises, and sauteed is for sizzling or rustling leaves types of sounds. Now, of course I can't guarantee the efectiveness of the cure, but it sure helps taking your mind of the tinnitus for a while!
Ciao, Lorenzo

Oh, I forgot to mention the second raw version: eat them while still alive, that way you get the crunch and the chirping at the same time, that's for the two-tone tinnitus.

not familiar with that expression, Nancy. Would you elaborate on it? 'loose as a goose'... I have a fertile imagination, but maybe i don't want to imgine the meaning of that one...

When I use it, I mean it like, 'we're all getting wacky, crazy'

But I just looked up the meaning, & I CAN'T SAY IT IN MIXED COMPANY

Oh my!  Just looked up loose as a goose and I had no idea that's what it meant!  Ok, on another subject.................. headache cures..........
I had such a headache this morning so I tried tylenol, headache was worse an hour later so then I took excedrin and guess what?? headache went away for awhile.  I don't do that all the time (doubling up on 2 different meds) only when I get desperate.   I don't think Grandma would approve  :-\

Holy cow.  Them Italians hijacked my thread!!  I thought you guys liked pasta?????

Oh well.  I knew the Gatorade thing would end up being in the "Too good and easy to be true" category.

When I was growing up, my Nannie (grandma) would say my yap was loose as a goose.  She is correct.  Like loose tongue?

Lorenzo please don't send me any recipes that contain bugs.  by the way I did try the focaccia recipe and it was wonderful. I've got the "biga/sponge" fermenting on the counter, smells like a brewery in my kitchen.

Now you all have peaked my curiosity of "loose as a goose". Something tells me I won't be using the expression as I once did :-X

On a more serious note (La! sez Genny) my next-door-neighbor at House said his Chinese Grandma used to say to stick your feet in a tub of hot water for a headache. I have done this a few times, but by the time I could actually turn the water on and fill the tub, roll up me pantaloons and actually do this, my headache was on it's way out. Mine come on really fast and I'm lucky if I can shoot up some Trex in time!

Lorenzo, there are lots of geese around here, you're more than welcome to them.  The leave messes as big as my dog!  Don't you have any old italian remedies for headaches (and like Cheryl said, no bugs please)!  :P

Mornin' all. I'm back to the world.
Skippy is loose in Pensylvania? What is it doing in Pen? Are the Amish getting into some alternative farming?
Cures for headaches: well, my nonna used to use a herb called Rue, but I can't rememeber if she ate it or drank an infusion. Either way I can still taste it, vile. But, I think it worked, for her.
Geese: we have lots that come here from Canada to spend the winter in a warmer climate. And yes, they do tend to produce huge amounts, and frequently too. Apparently (and I quote a farmer who knows these things) ever 5 minutes in average. Obviously, they never had steroids, these geese.
And you guys think I'm revolting?? Squashed worms? Lovely. Thanks. That should give a lovely complexion in the mornings, Capt.
Ok, I'm going to get my espresso, bug and goose free, and no headache either.
Ciao, Lorenzo  ;D

Ok.  14 hours on a plane and I was missing all the fun   >:( :D

Try this: drinken shrimps (live and happy) and skewer bbq crickets - guaranteed ancient Chinese recipes to cure tinnitus.  Nah...
Title: Re: Grandma's Cures

the first might give you a headche = louder tinnitus, and the second will make you forget the tinnitus by concentrating your mind on the preparation. Now that one could work. Of course you could ahve the same effect by concentrating on something less revolting and equally challenging.

oh boy, i have a headache now, off tot ake a tylenol.

don't be blushing! you're quite right to remind us of what's where and why. Thanks Phyl, I do tend to get carried away!

By the way, Rue (or Ruta as it is also known) is taken as a herbal rememdy, but, it is TOXIC so needs to be taken under strict medical supervision. Honestly, if any of you think it might help, go to a herbalist, and do not take it if you are pregnant! This thing can cause all sorts of problems if taken in too high a dose!

That explains some of my grandmother's behaviours....  :)

I've heard on a number of times that drinking significant amounts of water really helps for headaches (rumoured to be around 12 glasses/day)

Oh, and a great place for fried crickets is the Oaxaca market, southern Mexico. Dry fried with some salt and lemon juice in a tortilla. Make sure you're in the right season.

I was told in the past headache from dehydration (or red wine, in my case) could be eased with drinking lots of water.  When I did that I just ended up having to go to the bathroom a lot.  Can't recall if it actually helped.  Headache eventually subsided anyway.  With AN related headache, I haven't tried the water remedy yet.  Curious about what H2O does to your head?
Title: Re: Grandma's Cures
Post by: ppearl214 on January 24, 2007, 03:43:49 pm
Interesting theory Mary... I know there was a recent incident with H2O and a woman that participated in a radio contest that "OD'd" on H20, so please be careful.

I have used a variety of holistic eye and forehead packs, made with lavander, chamomille, etc.  I keep them in the freezer (in a zip bag to keep the aromatherapy/aromas intact)... then, if I get one of my massive headaches, I take out of the freezer, lay down and place over my eyes and/or forehead.  After approx 30 minutes, does work for me.......

Phyl,
I've used that too and it has helped the relief come a little faster but when the headaches are coming on an almost daily basis with no real pattern other than some apparent relation to the barometer, I really would love to find something that won't stop me from daily life!  I wake up, go to work and function (although barely some days) most of the time with a headache   ???  Until I find something that works, I really hate going through this.  I have gone months and hardly had many headaches at all, then they start up again  :-\  Once the weather warms up around here, I'm heading down to the headache clinic in Philly to see what they have to say!  I'll  bet Deb's probably already been this route but I'll update if I find out anything new!

Here's how my brainwrecks work--2 days of excrutiating neck pain followed by the brainwreck which usually wakes me up from a sound sleep. During the neck pain, I use a Thermaphore heating pad and this stuff called Bio-freeze, which to me is yuppied-up Tiger Balm.  Then when the brainwreck starts I use an icepack on the pack of my neck and some neck traction by using a rolled up towel, if I can keep still. I get really agitated. My doggie used to help with the agitation, but she is in doggie heaven now.

Also, the water thing is really important!

I don't get any warning, my headaches just come.  Sometimes putting a little pressure on the top of my head hurt.  Today I got one that was, on a scale from 1-10, a 20!  It slowed down a little bit so I got into the shower.  The hot water hitting my head (I use a shower massage on pulsate because my hair is thick) actually made it feel even better!  Can I just stand in a hot shower all day???
Title: Re: Grandma's Cures
Post by: Lorenzo on January 26, 2007, 01:26:27 am
Standing in the shower all day, now there's an idea. Plus it might help mask the tinnitus too! Excellent suggestion. One question though: how do you overcome the prune skin thing?
I'm off to the shower!

I find that standing uder the shower is such a soothing thing, it helps with neck pains from working on my computer, and settles the rare headaches that are not weather related. Water seems to be very good for us, inside and out, and it's brain food!

Keep drinking it guys!

Are you saying that Gatorade will help all kinds of headaches?  I went to my doctor on because I have been having neck pain and really bad headaches.  He told me I had arthritis in my neck and also had chronic migraines.  The arthritis showed up when I had an MRI back in July of last year. I've been having these headaches for over 5 weeks but I've had migraines before and the pain isn't the same as what I'm having now.  He gave me a prescription for Vicoden, Phenergan, Topamax and a muscle relaxant but none of them help my headache.  I go to bed with one and wake up with one and it hurts all day and is just about to drive me crazy because I can't get any relief.

At this point I'm ready to try almost anything to get rid of the pain so if you think Gatorade might help would you please let me know.

Thank you.

wiltedrose,
From your other post you asked what an acoustic neuroma was--this site is for patients with this rare form of brain tumor, however, there is a great site for folks with cluster headaches at http://www.clusterheadaches.com (http://www.clusterheadaches.com) where you might find more information for your headaches--they also have a discussion forum like this one.  Also--the National Headache Foundation is a good source, too.
