Title: eye ointment
Post by: Karen on January 04, 2007, 07:08:32 pm
How many people use preservative free gel drops?  I have been using Sustayne brand in a bottle but they were recalled and are now in thoses little vials.  I have to use them every two hours and feel like I am wasting too much.  Any body have any ideas?  I have no feeling in my cornea so I can't tell when to put drops in very easy.  Are there any gel drops in a bottle that are preservative free?  Karen

  Hi Karen:

I don't know about the preservative stuff, but I use only Refresh PM eye ointment (I need something really soothing),
or, I use Systane eye drops (as far as drops go, they're one of the thickest).

The main issue here is protecting your cornea from damage, so see an opthamologist ASAP(if you haven't already),
& keep your eye moist at all times.  My opthamologist told me I could use the ointment/drops as often as needed.

   Best wishes Karen,   Nancy

I'm not sure if these are preservitive free but Chet really like this particular eye drop.  It's made by the same company that makes Systane (Alcon). Tears Naturale Forte for moderate/severe dry eye. (It's the longer lasting one)  For Chet this particular drop seems to stay in his eye longer and has a less greasy feel.  He's pretty particular and right now he gives this one 2 thumbs up.

Have a great day.
Raydean

PS.  Ask your eye doctor for a bunch of sample eye drops so you can try , without incurring cost.  most eye doctors are willing to give them out.

  Hey Raydean,

I'm gonna try those eye drops.

I'd much rather use drops than ointment, but drops don't seem strong enough, & the lubricant I use works great but my vision is a little blurry because of it.
The eye drops you mention sounds different, as you said, 'longer lasting' - that might have a different feel.

  Thanks Raydean,   Nancy

I found that Refresh Liquigel works the best for me.  Now that it's much dryer, I'm back to putting it more often. About every 1 1/2 - 2 hours  now.  I use the ointment at night.  I also have no feeling on my cornea.  When I try to stretch it out longer my eye gets red.  But it doesn't hurt.  lol

I use refresh pm at night. During the day i use gentel. i use the gel kind. It's just like using the eye drops but it lasts longer. And a little thicker.  :)

not sure about preservative free but the refresh vials can be used for 24 hours and have a resealable top. The off brand doesn't reseal so there is a lot of waste.

During my dry eye issue, I was using GenTeal ointment at night, Systane drops by day. The GenTeal did make my eye a bit "goopy" in the morning, but definately helped ease the dry eye.

wishing you well,
Phyl

Hey Phyl,
How long did it take for your dry eye issues to go away? Or have they?

Hey Phyl,
How long did it take for your dry eye issues to go away? Or have they?

Granted, I had Cyberknife and found that the trigem did take a slight hit of radiation, so it lasted just over a month for me..... couldn't open my eye for a few days (like I had scratched the cornea with an eye lash or such). Went to optimistrist and he confirmed that my left eye (btw, my AN is left sided) looked like an onion peel and immediately noted the GenTeal.  I was doing GenTeal by day, but it was killing my vision on the computer (my day is filled with computer work), so I picked up Systane drops for day use.

Now is better, but dries out easy due to dry heat here in the NE (I have oil heat at home and still use my warm/mist humidifier at night to help).

Hope that helps.

for me, it did go away... as you know, each individual is different and our treatments were different.. and hoping is that it does go away for you VERY soon.
