Title: HEADPHONE USAGE
Post by: Muffin on October 23, 2017, 12:26:48 pm
Greetings All!  Does anyone have information on headphone usage when you have a VS? The reason I ask is I saw someone talking about wearing earplugs to protect ears in flight, etc.  I transcribe on the side and sometimes have headphones on for four hours to get the job done.  It is not blaring, but when I am finished with the job, or when I take a break and remove them, there is a period of time where I feel deafer for a while until I acclimate back to the real world.  I am concerned this is not protecting my ears.  I transcribed on and off for forty years.  Usually it was a small headset and not headphones. The headphones enclose the ears more, making it easier to drowned out background noise.  Do I need to quit this job?  I only get work periodically.  I suspect it has something to do with the headphones, but not sure.  It reminds me of when you go for a bike ride and you feel like a loon in your head but after you get off and acclimate, you are better. Bottom line...is it a temporary feeling or the body’s way of saying WARNING, WILL ROBINSON?

Ever try any of the Bose noise canceling headphones? My wife got me a pair several years ago, the noise canceling feature allow me to run them at lower volumes to begin with, since they don’t have to power through any residual background noise that happens to get through.  They work really well.

Yes. My son has a pair he let me use.  They are the best!  He needs them when he is flying, which is a lot. He works for the RR and is on the road much of the time.  I just didn’t think I needed something so expensive because I did minimal work, but the last project Imhad left me feeling funny in the ears until some time went by. I sure do not want to ruin what is left. Maybe I need to ask an ENT now that I have the official diagnosis.  I appreciate your input so much!

Hi Muffin

I do transcription also and have for the 9 years since my surgery. I'll second the Bose recommendation, mine work great. Another plus - since I only have hearing in one ear, when one side of the head phones eventually wears out, I just have to turn them around.  ;D

I haven't had a weird feeling while transcribing, I hope yours settles down!

Andrea, thank you for that uplifting message. I am happy to hear you say you are still transcribing with SSD.  That is encouraging! I feared I may not be able to continue, and really enjoy it.  I so appreciate everyone here!

I'm a musician and haven't worn headphones in over 12 years. Be careful. Prolonged use of headphones/earbuds can make you just as deaf as any external noise. I don't wear headphones, if anything, I wear earmuffs.
