Title: West Coast AN Forum Get-Together!!
Post by: marystro on November 03, 2006, 08:56:06 am
Some of us living in the southwestern part of the country are interested in a West Coast get together.  Please chime in if you want to join us.  I am thinking about San Diego, beautiful sea and sand, great vacation spot!!!  How about a Sunday brunch in December after Thanksgiving and before Christmas for that get away in Southern California?  I will guarantee a fabulous brunch location overlooking the ocean and on the beach!!!   ;D  Bring your sunglasses!  8)

*Phyl and other east coasters: if you are in the area or just want a perfect excuse to come to California for that warm sunny getaway, do join us!!!*

If December is too soon, we can also do it after New Year.  So the options are below.  Please indicate your preference(s).
Dec 10
Dec 17
Jan 7
Jan 14

Just want to see a "show of hands"....

Hi Patti,

Where in LA did you live while there?  What places did you haunt?  I was born in Burbank, moved to Glendale, Pacific Palisades and settled in Marina Del Rey.  I later moved to northern CA. where I rented, came back to LA for a job.  (one year)  I then bought a house up here.  (soon to move again in awhile)  It is hard mountain living up here in the woods.

I would like to meet other West Coasters but, I have CK scheduled in a few weeks.

Have fun together..........it must be nice!  Yes, S.D. is a good place.  Is that Anthony's By The Sea still there?  That is the best restaurant for fish, I have ever been to.  Oh, fish will be extint by 2048 so the news said, the other day.  Eat um' up.

Hi Patti,

I was just thinking about Anthony's in San Diego!!!

To make it easier for everyone, I am picking a date and see the level of interest.  I know there are at least 4 or 5 ANers in San Diego already.  How's December 10 (Sunday) sound?

Palace,

Ã‚ I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, Canoga Park. Lived there my whole childhood,  bounced around Reseda, Northridge, Encino my early adult years. Haunted several bars in the area. Then ended up taking a job in Newpark/Thousand Oaks area, so I moved to Ventura and lived at the beach for 2 years before meeting my hubby. He convinced me to move to Utah(yikes!) with him, So I too have been mountain bound for the last 18 years. You say you moved "up here" in the woods. Where is "up here"???  Did you frequent Malibu and Zoma beach? Spent my childhood  and teen years at these beaches. I do miss being able to go to the Ocean anytime I want, but don't think I could ever live in SO Cal again. I'm thinking maybe, Hawaii, Bahamas, that kind of beach would be a great place for an ANer to retire, don't ya think?

Patti UT

Mary,  Dec 10 might work, my hubby travels much for work so I have to coordinate with him, as I have kids, school, activities, etc. Back in Sept a bunch of No Cal ANers got together in Seattle and met up with Llarry from  Austrailia from the forum, I was sorry I missed it. I would come for the weekend. I'll check flights. Can you promise me a warm, sunny weekend? LOL,  It's getting kind of cold here now. We've already had several mild snow storms. My family live down there, they say it's been really warm.

ah, don't be alarmed if I show up.... I have a very dear friend in S.D. who's been talking about me flying out there for a visit (long overdue as it's been 3 years).  Gimme the beach and the Del Coronado and lunch out back at the resort and I'm there... as well as the terrific Mexican restaurant on the corner, across from the entrance to the Del Coronado... forgot the name of it but great burritos!

I can't do Dec 10 or 17.  Flying out of New England in January is tough due to typical inclement weather.... but with me... never say "never"  :)

Hope I can figure a trip out there but you all go ahead and schedule. I'll see what I can do from here based on the date you all choose :)

HI,
I want to come too, Las Vegas is only a hop skip and jump away!

However, I will be in San Francisco the weekend of the 9th, will my husband and our friends to see a football game and have some fun.  Then I can't do the 17th weekend because that is the weekend of my daughters' Christmas recital.  But if you guys end up doing this in January, 7th or the 14th would work for me!

Cheers,
Sue (Las Vegas)

Would it be better if we get together after new year given the busy holiday season?  Let's see a vote on the following dates:

Dec 10 or Jan 7

So for Jan 7, we have:

SuzeAN
Mary
John (very likely)

What about others?  I know, I know, it's a very long term planning (just like how our AN grows)...  But with the holidays, time flies.  Can you believe it's already Thanksgiving season and Christmas stuffs are already on sale in the store!!!

I' d love to come but I don't think the time works out. I am Canadian, living in Vancouver on the West Coast but I lived in Pasadena for three years and love San Diego (the best Mexican food - hard to find north of the border!). I work for a company based in LA and have to come down for trainings and events regularly so you never know - I might crash your party one day!

I might be able to do January. My son is graduating from College this December, so it's a busy month for me.  I am in Northern CA. I was lucky enough to be able to fly up to Seattle in September for the first west coast meet. AWESOME time we had ;D

Word of caution...at our Seattle meet we did have a difficult time hearing in the restaurant and it was a fairly quiet place. Throwing my 2 cents in here,  best advice would be to find a place with a separate room.

Hope to see all in January, I love San Diego!!!!

Great!  I will get us a room or at least a quiet corner (waterview preferred  ;)!)  I can guarantee margarita and Mexican food - yummy yummy mmmmm...  rubbing my tummy already...  It will be NICE and WARM.  I am "ordering" great weather!!!

Keeping January 7th.  It does not matter what time of the year here.  Remember, this is southern Cal!!!  We promise sun and fun!!!  Annual temperature variance is average 10 degree only!  Always blue sky above, sea, sand and great food  ::) :D ;D ;).

The new count is:

Mary
SuzeAN
Patti UT
Cheryl (Matti)
Phyl (bring your bloke with you - he will love us  ;))
John (still "wrestling" him - he will yield!)

Did I miss anyone?  Shoegirl?  Melinda? BevM? Busybonnie?  crynko?  others?

Wow, I've been so busy I didn't even have a chance to see you guys planning this! Jan 7th sounds good to me too! I will try to keep the date open. I'm still trying to decide on treatment so I'm not sure when I will be having it. I've been having vertigo lately, having it right now and it's tough to type. Any of you have trouble working with vertigo? I almost had to go home one night because I thought I was going to fall. I'm a waitress so that's probably the worst job for an ANer! I hope I can make it in January! I'd love to meet all of you.

Hi Marystro:   I would like to join the California group but live North of San Francisco so could not make the trip to SD.   I would certainly be there in spirit and would love to hear how it goes.  If there are any Northern Californians who would like to gather, I would help to organize that.

Hello:

I can set a date if anyone wants to meet at "The Davenport Cash Store" for breakfast!  (or an early brunch, sometime soon)  This is No. CA.  (down from S.F., below Half Moon Bay and not as far as, Santa Cruz)  It is just a thought/idea.

I am thinking either "Buster's Beach House and Long Board Bar - Seaport Village" or "Tom Ham's Lighthouse" for our get-together.  If we fancy Mexican food, then definitely the legendary "Old Town Mexican Cafe".  They all have private rooms or quite corners.  The first two overlook the fabulous San Diego Bay while the Mexican Cafe is in the famous San Diego Old Town.  See links:

http://www.bustersbeachhouse.com/html/bbhsdframeset.html
http://www.tomhamslighthouse.com/
http://www.oldtownmexcafe.com/

It's a blessing that we have so many great eateries but also difficult to choose as they are all great!  So, I will make some preliminary calls for reservations for January 7th.

Patti UT - There are lots of great hotels with great views all along the bay on Harbor Drive and many within walking distance to all the great sights and shopping!  *Who went shoe shopping after CK?  You'd love this place!!  ;)*  Since it is not in the peak season, I think you should be able to get great hotel rates.

So far, the list is:

Patti UT
Mary
Busybonnie
Cheryl (Matti)
SuzeAN
Phyl (with her bloke - never know?)
tcrnko (possibly - a good "dose" of pre-treatment calm)
John?
Shoegirl
Corrine5000 (never know?)

Anyone else?  Melinda?  I know Northern CA rocks but Southern CA has its charm also!!!  8)  So, Bruce?  Palace?  How about it?  You can do two places - North and South...  Any excuse to get-together for eating and drinking and talking very loud with "AN" excuse is a good one!!! :D ;D

Ok, when we are done with brunch, let's go to the Hotel Del to find our sand man!!!  (See the Good Morning thread)

Mark (possible - yeah!  My mentor oh my mentor!!! - now, Phyl, you really really have to come  ;D!)

Who wouldn't want to come to San Diego in the middle of the winter?  Come pirates, scallywags, east coasters, down unders, UKers?
*Now I sound like a tourist agent  ::) 8) ;)*

Oh, by the way, Since I spent more than the first half of my life in Southern California, I am very familiar that their Sunday brunches, are almost always "Champaign brunches"  Something you just don't see here in Utah. LOL  gee wonder why LOL

Patti UT

Mary,  when you say the San Diego Bay, do you mean Mission bay?? I soent many a wild weekend in Mission bay back in my early 20's  Had a friend who lived on the water/beach. Did alot of roller skating & bike riding on the boardwalk. Now that would be interesting. A bunch of AN'er roller skating after a champaign brunch.  LOL

Patti UT,

I was talking about the San Diego Bay right near downtown San Diego.  Mission Bay is another great choice where you can go roller skating, bike riding or just walking/jogging on the massive Mission Bay Park complex across from Sea World.  The Hilton Hotel there has a wonderful Sunday Champaign brunch.  Can we visualize us rolle rskating?  You bet!!

Ok are we going with the Jan 7 date?

This sounds like fun and would be great to relax after the holiday rush.  My family stayed in Mission Bay for a weekend during the summer,
it was fun and we stayed at the Bahia, which was ok but I am sure there are way nicer places to stay.  Champagne and brunch are one of my favorite combos!

Cheers,

I made reservations at Tom Ham's Lighthouse Restaurant http://www.tomhamslighthouse.com/index.html for January 7th 11:00 am.  Reservations name is "ANA".  This restaurant has a fabulous view of San Diego Bay.  The buffet brunch will definitely make us so full that we need to wash down all those roast beef, ham, oysters, omlets, desserts, etc. with those free margaritas!!   ;D

Let me know your confirmation so that I can give them the exact headcount.  I think I have heard interest and possibility from:

Change of venue - January 7th : 94th Aero Squadron!!

Today we went to 94th Area Squadron for their Sunday Brunch - great excuse to check out all the brunches around town ;).  I think I found the perfect place for all of us!!!  Don't know why I didn't think of them since I eat there often.  See their home page description:

"Located inside a replica of a World War I French farmhouse, the restaurant sits right on Montgomery Field Airport and is packed full of military memorabilia, farm implements, and aviation relics. The interior is cozy and romantic, with huge stone fireplaces, masses of hanging green plants, dark wood paneling, beamed ceilings, and old airplane wings hanging over the dining area. There are even headphones at some of the tables for diners to listen to the FAA control tower.

On warm evenings and at lunchtime you can sit outdoors on a grassy embankment at umbrella topped tables and be surrounded by an old model airplane, an army jeep, and a duck pond."

It's cool place.  If weather permits (probability is very high in our neck of the woods  8)), we will have patio seating.  If not (very unlikely), the inside is very charming also.  And the food is just superb!!! ;D  It has a menu that includes so much + Mexican food + champagne.  Their famous Bloody Mary, Margaritas, etc. are only $2.75.  I talked to the manager there and found out that they are voted the #1 Sunday Brunch in San Diego!

The location is so central with easy parking.  Shopping, Mission Bay, Seaworld, Coronado, beaches, La Jolla, San Diego Zoo, glider fields, etc. are all within 10 - 15 mintues.  I will call them early December to book us a table (they don't take reservation for January until December).  So, let me know your confirmation so that I can give them our headcount.

I received confirmation from some of you about our January 7 get together.  Please let me know what your plans are.  I may even change the location to a waterfront restaurant at popular demand!  We are in Southern Cal and the beach is awefully tempting.  I guess all these pictures of brunches that I posted are making me real hungry.  I am so excited that we will finally meet in person!!

Hi

We can still arrange a meeting in Davenport (or close there) someday soon for those near enough and interested.  I'd rather get it set up by personal email (forwarded automatically by the forum) and not let "spam-people" know where we plan to meet.  This is too weird for me in today's world!

Thanks,

Hi all,

Thought I will provide an update on our January 7 brunch plan.  Yes, the date, time and venue are set.  We will be meeting at Cafe Chloe in the famous Petco Park, Gaslamp Quarter area in San Diego.  So far we have confirmed attendance from Mark, John S. Yes, we did it!!  First ever Southern California AN Forum Get Together in sunny San Diego!!!

A small group but we had a great time today.  We met at Cafe Chloe where Rachael Ray frequents.  Lots of hugs, great friendship, informative, delicious brunch, etc.!!!  To top it all, we even had an in-promptu "guest speaker", Dr. Fuller, from San Diego Cyberknife Center present.  The discussion about "below the belt" CK applications with Dr. Fuller was so enlightening especially for all the male attendees approaching 50's  ;). LOL

Left to right: Dr. Fuller, John (Mary's husband), Mary, Nancy (Mark's wife), Mark, John (San Diego), John's wife --- later Phyl joined virtually via speakerphone on my cell, I gave a big hug to Mark for you!!! :D  Sue - We were disappointed you couldn't make it.  Wish you feel better with your flu...

Sorry we missed all of you, Phyl (in person), Maria (mll), Sue (SuzeAN), Lorenzo, Melinda, Lana (Busybonnie), Tim (tcrnko), ... Wished you could have come but don't worry, we are definitely planning another one later this year  ;)...

*see all our smiles on our faces  ;D*

Hi Mary:

Wow.  A guest speaker at your brunch!!

What a great group picture.  Thank you, thank you.

I bet the smaller group was good for the ones with hearing loss.  Is Mark the Mark that retired from the forum?  And which John is John?  I forgot.

Thanks for posting the picture for all to see.  Kathy

Yes, Dr. Fuller is amazing!!  He's definitely going to be invited back next time!!!!

Mark is the one who was going to retire but we (Phyl, me, others) all wrestled him out of retirement!!!  He's our poster child in the CK board.

John on the right is an AN patient in San Diego who was treated by CK 2 years ago.  He does not frequent here but may be he should --- his 2 year MRI shows a 60% reduction in AN size and his AN was 2cm at treatment!!!  Mark and I are just salivating over his remarkable results!!!  ;D

Mary,

You all look fantastic!  THRILLED Dr. Fuller was able to join you all and I'm sure he discussed some "en=lightening" topics that he handles ;)  As for the brunch itself, I'm tihrilled I got to say hi to you all and SO dang sorry I couldn't join in on this one... but, will see about next one. I'm due for a trip to SD.

Thanks so much for letting me be a "virtual" part of it... looks like you all had a fantastic time!

W00t for S. CA  brunch!
