Title: Tinnitus issue
Post by: Necromancer on April 27, 2015, 12:32:30 am
My doctor tells me my tinnitus is opposite the norm. Certain frequencies or volumes seen to make it worse. A noisy room, ventilation systems seem to make it worse. If I plug my good ear, it gets better. At night when it's quiet, I only have a faint hiss. Does anyone have this same problem, or am I just an oddball?

Hi Michael .....

Tinnitus takes so many forms, I did not know there was a "norm."

Several years ago I joined the American Tinnitus Association.  Check out what they have to say:  https://www.ata.org/understanding-facts/causes     Another good link for information:  http://www.entnet.org/content/tinnitus

Noisy environments, background music, HVAC noises, etc. all make my tinnitus crank up to very annoying levels ..... but it is also present at night when everything is quiet and I am trying to go to sleep.

..... so, no, you are not an oddball.   :)

When my tinnitus first developed it seemed to be exacerbated by various outside stimuli.  That's either stopped or I've acclimated.  Tinnitus affects us individually and there doesn't seem to be any standard level of annoyance.  In my 'bad' ear I have constant, readily-noticeable noise.  When I'm distracted I notice it much less.  When I'm tired it can seem 'louder'.  My other ear is much less affected and most time I hardly notice the distant tinkling bell sound.

I can live with both in preference to losing my hearing!

Thanks Clarice, your the first one to tell me I'm not an oddball. My tinnitus seems to react similar to yours, but calms down at bedtime. No tinkling bells for me, mine is a constant buzz, like an old floresant bulb. Thanks for your imput.
