Post by: JB914 on February 06, 2015, 11:30:12 pm
Anyone have any recommendations for SSD headphones/earbuds for phone/ipod/mp3?

I bought the single bud stereo ScanSound several years ago on Amazon.  It works well for me.  See:

1-BUD Single-Ear Stereo Earphone w/ 3.5mm Plug and 3 sizes of rubber eartips - for MP3 Players, Tablets, and all Apple iPod, iPhone and iPad Models - Color: White/Silver/Copper
by Scan Sound, Inc.

Off-topic but related....  Are there any .mp3 players with independent right/left channel controls for volume and tone?  When using a regular Sony mp3 player I'm listening mostly through one ear - hopeless for stereo sound!

I think a single ear bud combines both channels into the one bud.  I don't know if this addresses exactly what you were looking for, but it should eliminate the stereo separation of using only one of the two channels.

No I'm looking for a way to amplify the left channel - my a.n. affected hearing side - to more closely match the 'good' side so I hear sound from both at a similar volume.  The kind of adjustment that can often be made to audio systems' speaker systems and even those on home-cinema TV sets.

Now I understand what you mean.

thanks!  The adjustable volume would be handy although they're bulkier than I'm used to.  They're out of stock presently but I'll add 'em to a wish list for when they come back in stock.

What I'd also like to try is a player where frequency bands can be adjusted to boost the loss I have at certain frequencies.  My player has adjustments but on both channels simultaneously - no way to boost just my 'bad' side.

Thanks, though, for your suggestion - I'll keep my fingers crossed the phones come into stock soon.

That is a great idea Clarice--thanks! Not only is the lack of all the channels bothersome (sometimes you miss the background singers; sometimes you miss the guitar riff), it's annoying to have that extra bud either flopping around or tucked in the ear unnecessarily.

I like the fact that they are specifically marketed by the manufacturer for people like us.  It means they are working for solutions to our specific problem.  Maybe they could be persuaded to use the same technology for buds in addition to phones.

I would contact the company.  Sometimes online stock is not accurate.  Also, they may be able to "find" a pair for you or to direct you to one of their authorized dealers that might have them in stock.  You could also ask them about buds.

I can't vouch for the company or their products, but I am encouraged by their interest in our problem.

I've sent an enquiry - we'll see what the company has to say - thanks for the suggestion.

Don't thank me, I'm getting you to do all of the legwork for the likely event that I will need similar equipment when my AN ear packs it in ;D

I got a reply by return this morning.  A big school order emptied their inventory but more is expected next Monday.  I'll likely order some then.

That's great.  I was a little worried that maybe they were having production issues or something like that.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to all of this so have to ask a very newbie question.
I currently have CROSS aids but am seriously considering a BAHA.
I would have thought with the BAHA that you wouldn't need to have a single merged ear piece?
Obviously still grappling with lots and can't get my head around much of it at present so please excuse dumb questions.

Hi Loreley .....

The BAHA (either an Oticon Medical Ponto or Cochlear baha) is a bone-conducted hearing system.  It receives sound through the processor placed on your deaf side (through a bone-anchored abutment) and sends the sound via bone conduction to your hearing ear side.  Therefore, all sound is actually heard/perceived through one ear.  Both Oticon Medical and Cochlear have new models with bluetooth capabilities.  See:  http://www.oticonmedical.com/Medical/OurProducts/wireless/ponto-streamer.aspx#.VvfCURIrJmA (http://www.oticonmedical.com/Medical/OurProducts/wireless/ponto-streamer.aspx#.VvfCURIrJmA)  for the Ponto version.

If you want to use earbuds and you are totally deaf on one side, you would still need a single merged ear piece.

Hope that helps explain a bit.

Hi Loreley,
Clarice gave you a good explanation of the BAHA system,, but as you are so new to all of this and seem confused,, I though I would just add this. I don't mean to sound like I am talking "down" to you,, just trying to be helpful.

The BAHA , either brand, does not sit in your ear like a hearing aid. It sits on an abutment (little connecter)that is attached to a screw that is implanted into the skull right behind your deaf ear. The BAHA processor that you attach sends surrounding sound through the bone to your good ear to actually hear it. Your deaf ear does nothing.

So that is why they are asking about a single earbud.
I hope this helps a little. (I have the Cochlear brand). It is a hard concept to understand for all of us.

Jane

Aha ok that now makes sense, so many concepts to get my head around.
Thanks so much :)

Have ordered a new pair of ear buds, so miss my music and meditations, playing them out loud just isn't the same.

I really enjoy my SSD earbud, and I've recommended it to several people. So nice to have that full sound when I'm out walking the dog. And my Baha can still pick up sounds of traffic, etc., so it's actually safer than those with two earbuds!   :)

I don't know whether this has been covered before, but with the various "i" products, it's possible to enable "Mono" audio in the settings, basically turning off the stereo sound and reviving all of those headphones. You can find this in Settings--> General-->  Accessibility--> scroll down to Hearing.

I'm sure the Android world has something similar, also.

I recently ordered a Bluetooth ear bud on Amazon,(E.g. Axgio Mini Pro). The prices have come down a lot,  and I'm pleasantly surprised by the performance. It's nice not to have to deal with any wires.

Ultimate Ears makes a custom-molded single-sided ear piece. Ultimate Ears is a company that has made professional in-ear monitors for touring musicians. I have used their products for over a decade both in a performance setting and as my regular headphones, and I am so grateful they make a custom SS earpiece (with cable). http://pro.ultimateears.com/products/custom-monitors/ue-1-pro
