HI All,
I am just about 2 years post op, middle fossa. I have been experiencing something new lately. Very sharp shooting pains from the inside out thorugh my AN ear. Feels like it starts way deep in my head and shoots out through the ear. Anyone ever have this so long after surgery? Wondering what it could be. Any thoughts?

I also had Middle fossa and experienced alot of sharp pains prior to surgery. I do on occasion still get them, but much less severe. I think my post op ear pains are related to allergy or weather changes. The pain prior to surgery was so intense that I would literally drop to my knees.

Do you have any hearing in that ear? I 've wondered, since I have no hearing, can I get an earache! I have a dead hearing nerve, but what about the pain nerves?
I've never had shooting pains or anyother kind of pain actually inside the ear, but I sure get them right above it and behind it and in front of it. hmmmm..........

Patti....I had occasional shooting pains pre-surgery for years. It lasts about10-15 seconds and causes me to grab my ear and rub it...it's like it's right through the canal. I had hoped that I was over that having surgery, but it happened yesterday....same feeling as pre-surgery. Darn. It hurt like heck!!!!

yes, i have had shooting pains behind and in my ear
over the years before being diagnosed i got shrugs and bewilderment as to what could be causing it as no evidence of an infection in the ear etc. as would be a normal finding.
i had some pains like that but rarely after my fsr
i still get weird things in my ear
i think more of us should mention this even if it is fleeting or transitory or makes us almost fall down when it happens... 'cuase it sure isn't "normal".....

Thanks for the replys, Windsong, you confirmed my assumption that if I took this new problem to the Docs, I wuld just get the shrugs and bewilderment looks, like, well, what do you want us to do abut it.
Guess I can ass it to the list of post op AN problems.

I stilll think you should mention it. If enough of us do maybe the docs will finally see a pattern or connection. At least they will "know" about it.... certainly after my fsr i have let my docs know and the ear specialist doesn't shrug any more even if the precise reason for it is unknown.
the good docs over on the cyberknife board have answered a question about this, indicating that folks with radiation ought to mention it to the rad team they had...
I am no doc but i wonder if it isn't transitory inflammation of certain nerves that cause this? it would explain the episodic nature of the symptoms.... i haven't had any lately but I am more recently using a drop mix of dexamethasone and cipro in my ears....thought i'd pass that on....

I can affirm that you can get a regular, old fashioned, ear ache in the AN ear. I'm in Western Colorado at the moment and we had a real cold snap, accompanied by 8-12 inches of snow. I woke up yesterday with the AN side of my face hurting (nothing new there since I had a massive blow out fracture 30 years ago and this is normal when there is a major change in the weather), but I also had a wicked ear ache. Used some old fashioned techniques and today I feel fine. So I know you can get an ear ache, even when all your equipment is removed.

This interests me because in the last week I started to get sharp, shooting pains that last just seconds in the AN ear (6 mos out from surgery). I had no pain before or after surgery until this week. I am due to see the ENT wednesday so I will ask what's up and have him take a look.
I will let you know what I learn.

I know this post is pretty old, but wondered if any of you responders still have this?
I noticed some of you mentioned weather changes!! At 3 1/2 mo. post op I was doing well, then we got a major storm here in MI and my ear started aching like a good ole major ear infection. My family dr. said it was fine looking, but weather change might play a role on the feelings. I just hate that though and I wasn't sure what to do about it. I basically figured between healing and weather....sure, why not (??????)
So, just looking for any updates.

My original surgery for a golfball size tumor was back in 1998. Had Gamma Knife 1999, tumor stable. Just had my yearly MRI and my family physician who is keeping track of this gave me a horrible scare, telling me there were changes in my MRI. Since I've had this tumor I always get a copy of the MRI so I can read it and rest my own mind. This threw me way back to when I was first told I had this tumor! What a horrible feeling that is! After reading the MRI results, NOTHING was changed. The radiologist who read the MRI and reported on it states that the area where the tumor was , he can't even recognize it as a tumor, just by previous MRI! So needless to stay I'm furious at my GP for making me go back to 1998 and the feeling I had then! When you spend 3 months in the hospital and really only remember the last month it's disheartening to say the least! I'm so grateful that I can have yearly MRI's to keep an eye on tumor.
I still have stabbing pains in that ear. Have no answer to what it is, thinking it has something to do with scar tissue and weather changes.
Now that my heart has started calming down after this latest mishap, I'm back to yearly MRI's!

How can you read an mri scan? Are you a Neuro person. I would love to know how to do this.

The MRI is 'read' by a specialist, a Radiologist (an MD). He/she writes a report on the findings of the MRI and sends them to your doctor but you, as a patient, have a right to receive a copy of the Radiologist's report. In my experience, the Radiologist uses very technical medical terms (mostly Latin) but if you can access a medical dictionary (online or at the library) you can usually decipher the MRI report, even if looking at the scan is pointless, as it always is for me. I assume this is what 'valariecoldfeet' means by 'reading' her MRI....she reads the Radiologist's report, just as I do.

I get shooting pains occasionally on my AN side just behind the ear - haven't had surgery yet so I can't tell you if they are going to continue or not.

i was beginning to think i was making this up or making something out of nothing.. i woke up last friday with the worst pain. i called them ear spasms.. tight and horrendous pain... this was around the area behind my right an ear.. so naturally i thought it was related to the tumor. dr. told me it had nothing to do with the tumor,, more muscle then anything,so to use a heating pad or hot rags,, 800 mg of advil. he thought maybe i slept crooked, well its kind of hard to sleep crooked when the pain was behind my ear.. after suffering with it all weekend, i went back and the only thing he could think of was damage to the neuratic nerve. i had cyberknife done in 2010,, just to find out i was told wrong and should have never had raditation for a 3cm tumor. so now i have damage from it. since radiation can last in ur body for 2 years or more, there is no telling how much more damage i could have.. we wont know until things happen.. the neurologist gave me two shots in the head of this numbing agent along with steriods... to help numb the sharp pains.. not permantly but for a couple of days.. she has also ordered a mra , to rule out annurisms. .. its good to know i wasnt making this all up in my head..

So sorry for you that you were given wrong information I too had a problem with surgery that is why I keep telling people to please please research as much as you can and make sure you pick a GREAT team no matter what course of treatment is chosen...Hoping you find some relief and did you have the MRI yet praying for good news and pain can be treated ??
