Title: Post surgery hearing question
Post by: Jackd104 on September 16, 2013, 02:49:34 pm
Wife just got out of surgery for an removal, so approach. In icu, nurse gave rudimentary hearing test by flicking fingers near ear.  She couldn't hear it.  From anyone's experience can it improve in the hours after surgery, or does this not bode well?  Dr said before the surgery we wouldn't know about hearing for 24 hours so I'm holding out hope

Thanks
Jack

I wouldn't be counting on that finger flicking test as the last word on hearing or the nurse who thought that was the way to go.

It's possible that the trauma of the surgery shocked the nerve or that the surgeon had no choice but to damage the nerve.

I'd say that a long talk with the surgeon is appropriate as to exactly what was accomplished and how along with the prognosis for hearing.

And, of course, you have said nothing about the size of the AN or the symptom history so there's nothing more anybody can do here except speculate.

Tumor was about 7mm. Hearing was near 100% going in.  Main symptoms were tinnitus, dizzy spells, fullness of ear.  So far facial functions seem good so thank god for that.  Thanks for your input.

What does the surgeon say (post op) about the hearing?

Hi Jack, I hope your wife is doing well. Has there been any change in her hearing? I have a similar question. My hearing was "perfect" going into surgery, and the doctor removed my brain tumor from behind my ear to avoid damaging my hearing. But the "finger flicking" test was the first I realized I had lost my hearing even though the nerve was intact and reactive before they closed me up. It's now been 4 months and still nothing. Has anyone recovered their hearing after this much time? My ENT said they don't even check it out until 6 months--so there may still be hope. It's really not been as big a deal as I thought it might be, but it's kind of like my radar is messed up. I can't tell where sounds are coming from and feel like I'm in a box or something.
