Hi Paula,
I haven't heard of anyone on here being treated at Mayo in Jax..not to say they haven't.  What you want to do is ask the doctor how many AN surgeries they've done.  Not just brain surgeries.  If you haven't request the brochures from here which give you a good list of questions to ask your doctors.  The average doctor only sees about 30 an's in his entire career...you want one who's treated hundreds!

A few years back a friend of mine was researching Doctors in the Jacksonville .  One Doctor that she mentioned was a Dr. Doug Green.  I believe that he received training at The House Ear Clinic and has treated quite a few AN's.  As Michelle has stated it's critcal for the best possible outcome that you choose a medical team that has vast experience in the treatment of AN's.

Hope this helps

Has anyone had any experience or information with doctors is Gainesville, Florida - Dept. of Neurosurgery, University of Florida?

Hello everyone,
Please forgive my inexperience in using this forum. After I first made the inquiry about University of Florida, I found very helpful info as I proceded through the forum. In fact, We have learned so much from you all and we are so grateful that we found this site. When I say we, I mean my husband and myself. Actually he is the one with AN but since I have more time , I  do the research and we've approached everything as a team.
We live in Vero Beach, Florida (east coast of FL). Bob's  AN is considered very small, so his ENT recommends the wait/see approach. This may be the best thing to do at this time, but we want to learn/research as much as we can so that we can make a wise decision. Bob spoke with his doctor yesterday and told him that we were looking at all options. He (ENT) recommended Dr.Bartels @ Tampa General. I guess we will start there. I did see where someone did use Dr. Bartels and was every happy with the surgery outcome. If anyone else has heard anything about Dr. Bartel, when you have the time, please let us know.
Again we sincerely thank each one of you for posting what you have learned. We feel through each one of you that God has answered our prayer.

I went for a consult with Dr. Patrick Antonelli at Shands when I was first diagnosed. (I live in Florida). He, as well as Dr. Stephen Lewis spoke at the ANA symposium last year in Orlando. Shands was the sponsor for the event as U of Penn is the sponsor next year. They are both highly regarded. Dr. Lewis gave an excellent presentation on the various approaches for surgery. I eventually went to House because of their higher level of experience.

Hi Paula, I had my surgery 2 weeks ago at Mayo in Rochester with Drs. Link and Driscoll.  I really like them and felt they have always been 100 % honest with me.  You might consider calling one of them and asking if they are familiar with the acoustic specialists in the Jacksonville clinic.  Of course, you should also ask the Jacksonville folks directly  about their experiences.  I don't know if Jacsonville clinic has more than one set of doctors who work on these.  I would think in a state as large as FL (my home state) you would be able to find some really good folks, but if not.  Travel isn't too bad just give yourself extra time regardless of what procedure you have.  I would not have liked leaving the hospital for the airport.  i gave myself a couple of days in between and that really helped.

I looked into Mayo-Jax for my treatment, but my local doctors told me to go to Shands. They said that Mayo in Jacksonville is not to be confused with Mayo in Minnesota. It's a smaller facility that doesn't have as many highly-specialized doctors and I'm pretty sure that they don't treat a very high volume of ANs. If you're looking for an experienced team of AN doctors in FL, Shands is probably your best bet.

I had my surgery done here in Florida. I had no choice on the doctors I had as it was done as an emergency.
Apparently, God was with me because I got the best doctors!  Dr. Douglas Green and Dr. E Garcia. My tumor was 4 cm and I had it for sometime. I was first diagnosed with Bells Palsy and went for 3 months before they figured it out!  I would refer anybody to them!  they did an awesome job.
