Title: Not impressed with new website
Post by: Brendalu on January 02, 2011, 05:19:35 am
Wow...I need new glasses or a non glare thingy for my screen...count me as one who does not like the new format, colors or anything about the new server.  I guess I will limit my posts and stalking this is too hard on these old eyes.
Any suggestions to make this blue and white nightmare go away?

Brenda,

Well, I have to agree with what you said about the new format, Brenda.
I feel overwhelmed with such brightness and lack of lines (?) to help delineate different areas on the screen.  Also, the whole site loads more slowly - i don't like that at all.

Do we know if the upgrade is complete?

But here's the worst - I USE A MAC, and now can't see the ANY of the tools above this box.  rrrrrggghhhh!  So forget the smiley faces and spell check.  This is pretty frustrating.....

All

Please note that the forums site is experiencing glitches right now that are being worked to be fixed.

As with any new website, there may be behind the scenes issues.

The ANA and myself have spoken to the new host site tech support and the issues will be addressed today to try to fix it.

We appreciate everyone's understanding and patience while it's being addressed.

Thanks!
Phyl

We requested, multiple times, as of late Friday for folks NOT to post as posts would disappear since they would not be part of the back up files.  Anything posted after the ANA's request not to post did not make the transition. This was also noted in the "do not post" thread.... that they would not carry over and be lost.  Multiple alerts were noted and we hoped that folks would comply as it also potentially delayed the transition as the forum files were VERY large to carry over.

Folks... please understand that this switch is still not completed and ask for understanding and patience.

Oops, my bad!  I thought when I saw all of this brightness that the transition was complete....I will give it a few days, but I sure hope the format is more like the old one.  It's hard to teach "some" "old" folks new tricks.

Yikes!!!  Big changes :(

I've always liked the ease of getting around this website, hope that returns.

Also, Phyl, although I figured out your previous message about deleting my browser history and refreshing, etc., I can't see half of what is on this website.

For example, when I wanted to reply to this post the box that should say "reply" just has a red x in the middle - no words.

The icons (smiley faces) above this box are all gone too.

How do I get the "pictures" back?

Thanks,

Jan

Looking better already. The main images are coming through now. The smileys are still missing...

We're getting there folks!  Yes, some "glitches" (ie: smileys, as Steve noted, etc) to be tweeked but we're on the right path..... in the immortal words of Freddie Prinze..... "lookin' goood!"

Let's all give it a chance to work out the glitches! Patience, please!!! Then when it is completed, we can complain!

Well, Phyl did point that out numerous times.  Guess some folks missed it.

The website is looking better already.  Think it will take some getting used to, but hopefully you can teach old dogs (like me) new tricks.

Change is always difficult and this transition is no exception.  However, so far, so good.  I had no difficulty logging into the ANA website and posting.  I realize some posts (mine included) we're 'lost' in the transition but Phyl's warning was quite explicit and no one should be surprised at the loss of some posts.  For my part, I assume the person I replied to read the post before it was 'lost' and if not, oh well, it's not like we lost the Gettysburg Address or anything.  I trust that the various glitches will be ironed out promptly and life on the ANA discussion forums will soon return to it's familiar, tranquil state.

Jim,

you are SO right!  Change is hard.

I'm happy to note that, with the exception of the little smiley face icons not appearing on my screen yet, everything else seems to be working well.

Thanks to Judy V - and the "techies" involved in this transition - for all the hard work.

Well, Phase I is coming along with fine tuning to be done. I do have, on very good sources (you all know I have the Batphone with me at all times), add'l "new and improved" forthcoming.  The first part is just to get the old site transitioned to the new host... and fix glitches from the transition.  Keep open eyes for the "new and improved" as well... they may not be that quick in their happenings, but they are forthcoming.

Hats off to all for patience and understanding as this moves along.......

is it this forum that we see this morning Jan 3rd at 0915 Brampton time? This is a fairly common style of forum. And if you don't like the colour/layout I believe that you can change to one called quicksilver. I'll check and get back to you...but it's on user settings.

ok so you can't change the layout. Admins will often set a default layout for a forum based and like I said this one is a very popular colour scheme and layout. I don't mind it at all but like someone said, we humans are often change resistant.

Well, this is my first look at the "new" site and I think it looks just fine.  I am sure that the small glitches will all be worked out in time.

Happy New Year, all!

I work in the IT business and typically when changes are made by the IT folks they are based on requirements from the owners or customers who own/use the tool. They don't program changes to their "liking" they program to what are in the requirements. Personally I signed on just now for the first time and think it is pretty cool. So good job to those in the techy world for updating the database.

Thank-you to all who are working so hard to make this forum 'better'  :)
I appreciate you Phyl-lie girlie  :-*( can't wait for my little faces to return LOL)
I'm not sure if you even get paid to do all this time consuming work? Do you???
Any Hoo just had to say thank-you!

Hi, Donnalynn ~

Thanks for your kind words and, to answer your question (with all kidding aside) - all of the moderators are volunteers.  Thank you for your dedication to the ANA discussion forums and the positive energy you consistently contribute. You are always a source of encouragement to others, even as you struggle with your own problems, making you valued and appreciated.

I asked the ANA for a cost of living raise..... sorry the smileys aren't working to express their response!

Ok, update from the Powers that Be....... they are aware of the "emoticon" (ie: "smileys") issue and are having it addressed. We are also on high alert to help make sure that spammers don't get through (so, all.... if you spot any, please chose the "Notify" button on the bottom/right of someone's post -- which now replaces the old "Report to the Moderators" -- should you see anything suspicious, which does NOT include my self-reference as the "cursed cruise Director").  New forums will be added as well and I have on good authority (yes, via the Batphone) that the "Members" section of the home page should be working fine now.

So, that is today's update. Thanks again all as we go through this..... we're getting there!

I can log in to this forum with my username and password.  But when I try to get into the member section, it tells me that my username and password don't match.  I guess I will try again tomorrow and see if it's one of the glitches getting fixed.

Yesterday was my semiannual eye check...huge changes in my eyes...can't wait to see what I have been missing.  We logged on to the ANA Forum, because I told him that the new one seemed really bright and hard for me to read.  He told me that with my eye problems, and this wouldn't affect 70% of the people with seeing problems, that this is not user friendly for me.  He said the brightness of the background and all of the "cool" blues would wear my eyes out and give me headaches.
He said he could prescribe glasses to correct that for me, but that is not in this old woman's budget.
The ease of getting on the site is wonderful.
I will miss all of you and the wonderful support and care you all give to each of us.  So until we meet again....Have a Wonderful, Successful, Happy, Healthy New Year full of love and laughter.

Brenda ~

I'm very sorry to learn that the colors and brightness of the newly reformatted ANA website discussion forums are making it difficult for you to use the site/forums and you'll be 'leaving' us as a regular reader/poster.  I trust that you'll remain connected in other ways and of course, you know you'll be missed around here.  Wishing you a fabulous (O.K., pleasant) 2011.

So here is my question...I see some smileys (like at the top of Jim's last post on this thread) but I am unable to get them.  There are only blue boxes with question marks above this text box.  However, some people are still using them and they show up on my screen as the blue box - are some people seeing them.  I have a Mac - does that have any bearing on it or am I just not living right these days??

i don't have the smilies either, but i'm getting a kick out of reading these posts and seeing "smile" "kiss kiss" and "huh huh". the fact that this is so entertaining to me will be short lived i guess.  "smile" "wink"

Keri, I'm so glad you found yourself.

And now I have to say I am definitely impressed with the new website. There is a new forum just for the local meetings! I feel so special that they approved my suggestion. Soon we won't have to scroll to page 2 to see the other community threads.

Woohoo!

that was a great suggestion, sara. it will be nice when they move to their new place!
regarding the other format stuff, i can't tell that much difference. the print seems bigger, which i like. it's a bit easier for me to read, and reading the little smiley descriptions continue to crack me up. i guess i'm easily amused.
i am so happy i found my real self and that i'm even a 'hero' member!

Just for the record, I love Steve too.

And I have to say, without the exception of really missing the smiley faces (love those smiley faces), the new website isn't as bad as I first thought.

It's a woman's prerogative to change her mind.

And I'm happy to see the spell check button is back - or I couldn't have spelled prerogative.

Donnalynn,

above the little smiley faces are two rows of "blocks".

In the top line of "blocks", second from the right is a letter A and an arrow that points both ways.

Highlight the text you want to make bigger or smaller and click on this block.  Then edit the size=xxpt.  I just made this 15 pt.

Jan

PS - don't you just love the new icons  ???  I think they are very   8)  Especially this one  >:D

But I haven't figured out what this one is for  ^-^

What is "AZN"?  Amazed?

Hi Brenda!  Glad to see you are here!

Now here is my question...
I logged on this morning and the Forum Discussion looks very close to the old one, lots of grey like before, but a few more emoticons.

Am i dreaming or do i need to reset something?
I also use a MAC.

All is well - glad to see we are back!

you have to change the size - click on that & then go in & change the 10 to another # - then put your cursor back between the brackettes (where it was BEFORE you changed the 10) and type your word...
