Title: Wish me luck! :)
Post by: Pooter on May 06, 2010, 08:09:08 pm
Tomorrow at 2pm, I have a job interview!  Ironically, it's with Memorial Herman Hospital System.  I stayed in Memoral Herman Downtown after my surgery (and my 2nd stay).  This is a satellite building of theirs, but same system.  Should I call in my surgeon for a reference? ;)

Know next to nothing about the job, but a friend recommended me and gave my resume.  Officially, the job isn't "open" yet, but the hiring manager wants to talk to me before it does get opened.  Hopefully, that's a good sign.

Btw, why has the board been so dead lately?

Regards,
Brian

I'll be thinking good thoughts!

LUCK!!!!!
It's a good sign that you are to be interviewed before the job officially opens.
I don't know why the board has been so dead lately.
I keep mentioning how excited I am about my facial reanimation surgery next week, and I know there a quite a few  AN surgeries coming up.
Luck,
Maureen

All the best, Pooter  :-*

Hope you get the job  ;D

Before I read your post, I was thinking we were all going to be wishing you luck on that annual MRI (hint, hint).  BTW, did you schedule that yet?

The Forum has been dead lately; not sure why.

Wow!  Thanks everyone!  I didn't anticipate such a response especially given how dead it's been around here all week...

Jay, I'm not so sure that any of my AN knowledge (what little there is) will be helpful because I'll be interviewing for a technical position.  I seriously doubt that he knows anything about ANs even given that he works for a major hospital. ;)

Jan, no comment.  :)

Moe, congrats on the facial reanimation surgery.  I'm sure you'll rock it and be very pleased!

Rich, not EXACTLY on the inside, but close enough.  Enough on the inside that the recommendation helped get me in the door.

I'm nervous, but ok.  As someone very wise once told me, it's okay to be nervous as long as all of your butterflies are flying in formation.  Well, mine are.

Thanks again all!

Regards,
Brian

Lori, I asked my OB/GYN years ago for a job reference in the hospital where my daughter was born. He said he preferred to keep his patient relationships separate. The curmudgeon.

P.S. Pooter, how did the interview go?

Sara

P.S. Pooter, how did the interview go?

Two words:  Nailed it

Again, the job isn't officially opened yet, but when it does (should be within the next 2 weeks), I would be floored if I wasn't at least among the top considered candidates.  I could go into many details about why I think it went well, however suffice it to say that I have a REAL good feeling coming out of the interview.

At some point, I have to decide if it is worth stepping out of my comfort zone a little bit for the trade up in upward mobility options.  I guess I'll decide that when the time comes.

Brian

Btw, why has the board been so dead lately?

Way to go Pooter... I hope you get the hospital job you are after.

So why are things so dead? ... Well because we have not convinced you to start DANCING- yet. ;D

Hmm maybe the Memorial Herman Hospital System staff there does surgical glove dances too? ;)

Here are some more glove dances to share with you… done by hospital BESIDES the one from Portland Oregon

Pink Glove at Waldo County general
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejPiMnq6nEQ

Martin Memorial medical Center
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg7vpdOu5IA

Blue glove dance for autism (ok ok not a hospital)
http://vimeo.com/10730785

Purple glove dance of relay for life by Michigan State University (ok ok college kids)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDERYYtHBvs

Purple glove dance of relay for life by Georgia College & State University (ok more college kids)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcdi7u_purple-glove-dance-gcsu-42350_travel

Well of course I am partial to our “original” Portland Oregon Pink Glove done by the hospital where our ANA support group meets.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEdVfyt-mLw

So Pooter if you start working at a hospital you know you ARE going to have to start dancing now… (I think it is a new employee hospital requirement that you are willing to dance  :D)… If you run out of ideas (or causes) maybe get one going to bring awareness to Acoustic Neuromas. Hmmm what color glove would be best?

I suggest neon orange to match the super high-powered earplug I sometimes wear (the flesh tone one I wear everyday is too boring).

Pooter what is you favorite color?

Any ideas for what cool 8) music we should use ANYONE?

DHM :)

Brian ~

I've been borderline AWOL here for the past few days due to pressing issues at home, including completely redecorating a room in our condo and buying a new car - both time-consuming.

However, I apologize for missing your initial post and by doing so, forfeiting the opportunity to wish you success on the job interview.  Apparently, that worked out quite well anyway and you're now in line for the soon-to-be-open job.  Congratulations!  I have to mention that taking risks is an essential factor of achieving success in life.  I could bore you with some personal stories that might help prove it but I suspect that you need no convincing.  So, I'll simply tell you I'm confident that if you're offered this 'upwardly mobile' position, you'll do what's best for you and your family.  I won't wish you luck because if the job is offered to you, you'll have earned  it.  'Luck' will have nothing to do with it.

Tomorrow at 2pm, I have a job interview!  Ironically, it's with Memorial Herman Hospital System.
OMG
 :D

I ACTUALLY found a video of Memorial Herman Hospital   ::) where the staff DANCES!

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GBwUT3Khe8

Pooter- Is this the same hospital system?

(Oh Goodie Steve… we just MAY get to see ole Pooter dancing after-all. ;) ;D  :D )

DHM :-*

Title: Re: Wish me luck! :)
Post by: Pooter on May 09, 2010, 10:08:25 pm
Same hospital system, yes. Memorial Herman has 10-15 hospitals/clinics in the Houston area. The group in the video were from The Woodlands, which is north Houston.  The group I interviewed with supprt all of the hospitals/clinics primarily in the arena of electronic medical records. It's an exciting subject with lots of potential because there's a federal law requiring every doctor to be on electronic medical records by 2015.  So, good timing if it works out.

But, DMH don't plan on seeing me dance on YouTube any time soon.

Regards,
Brian

I'm with you Pooter.  No dancing for me either.  We HAVE to stick together  ;)  :D

I've read about the electronic medical records law and I don't think you can wrong with a job in this field.  It's supposed to be a major undertaking for most hospitals, medical facilities, and doctors.

When do you hear if you've gotten the job?

Remember, if you do accept it, you need vacation time in June 2011.  We plan on seeing you in Cincinnati for the 2011 ANA Symposium.  Bring Jenni and the kids.

My husband is the CIO for a medical group here and was instrumental in the changeover to electronic medical records. There are a few holdout docs, but I'm sure they will all be retired by 2015. It is an arduous process getting all of the paper records entered into an electronic database but now that the hard part is over the system in general works very well.

Okay, so first of all - congrats on nailing the interview (not that I am surprised.)

Second (channeling Jan here...) WHEN are you going to schedule that MRI??  C'mon, man - as soon as you get the thumbs up, it's time for a virtual party.

And, yes, you're right - it's been awfully quiet around here.  I posted a plea for stories yesterday and have only gotten a couple of bites.  Surprised me.

Keep smiling, my friend.

Debbi, no worries for just seeing this.  Thanks for the comments.

Sara, thanks!  I've always felt like I was certainly worth being in demand, but not til here recently have I ever really felt that OTHERS feel that way.  Feels good, especially in light of my AN.

Jan/Debbi, there are mitigating factors that I won't dive into on this forum.  But, suffice it to say that it is still on my radar to get soon.

And, you guys will be happy to know that I've started the ball rolling on scheduling my annual MRI.  I don't have a firm date yet, but it's in the works.  I expect it to happen sometime in the next week or so (pending available times to get me in).  I'll follow up with my surgeon sometime a week or so after the MRI is complete.

as for MRIs , I am almost 6 months past due and until I can fake a medical emergency that requires an MRI of my head I guess I will do without ... insurance doesn't pay for what they term maintenance MRIs but will pay for one in case of an emergency ...awwwwwwwwww the crazy world of insurance woes

and I guess a fake medical emergency is out since I am not a good faker and would get caught and locked up for insurance fraud ... in jail though the local prisoners have full coverage ...hmmmmmm might be such a bad plan after all  ;D

our jail has no smoking , no vending machines for snacks or drinks , no TV room , no computers , two orange suits per week , (but you can shower daily) ... and if you don't go out on work detail (non violent crime  offenders) you are fed breakfast and dinner , no lunch ... our last Sheriff took all perks away and learned that by state law he is only obligated to feed prisoners 2 times a day ... he even made Good Morning America for being tough ... crime in the county has dropped ... new sheriff kept all changes in place ... former sheriff is Bo's cousin and now our districts state rep... wonder if he could pull some strings and get me a lap top ???  ;)

really have no intention of becoming a criminal ... and still looking for better coverage from someone who will take me ... did learn through human services that I could get catastrophic coverage through the state that would cover AN issues ...

catch is , I have to get divorced and live in separate dwelling from Bo and recieve no support from him ...  >:( ...

Sara, it's not so much a group interview as it is back-to-back personal interviews with 5 individuals.  At least one of the 5 is one of my best friends in the world..  At least that one's in the bag (I hope)..  Thanks for the sentiments, though.  Big week for me personally with the MRI tomorrow, driving out of town Thursday night and interviews for most of the day Friday..  I hope come the weekend I have great news to share with everyone.. ;)

Thanks!

What I meant is that I prefer the back-to-back personal interviews. I had, I think, eight half-hour interviews with individuals, plus a group lunch.

I'm sure your friend is spreading good thoughts about you among his colleagues, and they will be predisposed to be impressed.

Sara, Jan and Denise thanks!

Update again, the interviews were today and they were intense! I met with a total of 6 people in over the allotted time. Some were hard to read how they felt it went, but from my perspective they overall went well. I guess it's back to wait mode. I'll either get an offer or not. I've done what I can and can do no more except wait. Thanks again for everyone's thoughts, prayers and well wishes. I hope to hear something from them soon (next week?).

Regards,
Brian

Pooter -

hope the news - when you get it - is good.

I may have to ask you for some interviewing tips in the very near future.  Work is currently a horrendous nightmare and I think I'll be throwing my hat in the employment arena very shortly.

Thanks for the update, Brian.  It seems as if you did well in the interviews and at this point, it's out of your hands, so your 'whatever will be, will be'  attitude is a sensible one.

Of course, I hope you receive the job offer you want and that it all works out for you.  Either way, you've done your best.  I'll be looking for your post with the final result.

Jan!  Oh my gosh!  I hope that you'll be throwing your hat into the employment arena by choice rather than the other way around.  I'm not sure I can give you many tips.  Hope it gets better!

Brian ~

I'm sorry this didn't beak your way.  As a guy who used to have to 'audition' in order to get radio jobs and was often rejected or, worse yet, led to believe the job was 'in the bag' only to play the waiting game and then find out they hired someone else, I know the feeling of regret and frustration.  However, at least you still have a job.  I know you gave it your best shot.  I'm sure you'll do even better, when the timing is right.  Hang in there - and never give up.

I hope that this does not come across as flippant, but I am feeling remarkably serene about this. Poot, I think it means it was not the right job for you, not that you were not the right one for the job.

Take heart, Pooter, the right thing will come your way sooner or later.

And the hits just keep coming.... I heard from the Houston company a little while ago:  Thanks, but no thanks..  For those of you keeping score:  0-2  (that's just the latest score, the real score is much worse)

Thanks everyone.  Jan, word of advice:  Don't ask me for interviewing tips because obviously I'm doing something wrong in mine.  ;)

The silver lining is that the day is almost over finally.

Oh, my Pooter.... the silver lining is... "when you least expect, it will happen....".... as it did for me last month... and as it will do for you..... we tout our "gut feelings" around here and my gut is telling me..... "sooner than later"....

Hang in there..... I do believe....

Pooter -

if it's any consolation the economy still sucks.  I don't think your interviewing skills are to blame.

My boss who was fired in May 2009 just found a job about a week ago.

Not sure where I'm at in this situation.  On one hand, my current job pays the bills - on the other, the stress and frustration is killing me.

There's a job out there just waiting for you.  You'll see.

Keep the faith!

Jan

I'm very sorry that you got two hits in the same day, but I am still confident that you will find the right job at the right time.

Meanwhile, I'm really glad you have a job. Check out this article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/04/disturbing-job-ads-the-un_n_600665.html - I wonder if that includes new college graduates? My daughter just graduated magna cum laude and is finding very little to even apply for. (She is doing part-time temp work this summer for a state agency to pay for health insurance since she lost coverage through her dad's job the month she graduated and the coverage under the new health care bill is not mandatory until January.)

Sara,

(HIGHJACK, sorry Brian)

Wow, congratulations on your daughter's achievements and I hope she finds a job soon. How frustrating. >:(

Our daughter also graduated from college ( not with credentials like your daughter!) with BS in Nutrition. Applied for dietetic internships, but wasn't "matched" to her choices, because there are not enough internships for the applicants! So she is living with Ma and Pa, working at the "Blazing Onion" restaurant (with kids, basically,) while she studies to take a test to be a Registered Dietitian Technician, which will give her experience, but pays squat (if she can find a job in THAT).

So frustrating. We have another son graduating next May in business.......Aaagghhh! I'm going to encourage him to go for his Master's right away. We're footing the bill for undergrad, he can do the grad stuff.

Anyway, tell your daughter she is not alone, as I'm sure she knows.

Pooter don't be too hard on yourself, it hard to find a job in these times and the competition is huge.  Like I said before something will pop up and be a perfect fit for you, the dream job you've been waiting for.
Smile  :)

Liz

Phyl, its so awesome to hear you have a new job, thanks for the update  :D :D

Brian ~

I'm sorry that the other job prospect fizzled, too.  Although interview skills are important, I don't believe they always make or break your chances to land a job in a technical field.  It took me years to hone my job interview skills but as a broadcaster, I was judged mostly on my talent and contributing factors, such as experience and voice quality.  Unless I acted like an obnoxious jerk during an interview, I would usually get the job I applied for.  However, in the radio D.J. business, the hiring decision is almost completely subjective.  I was turned down for one radio gig I applied for (in Hartford) but six months later, a much bigger Hartford station (that paid way more) approached me (I never applied there) and pretty much offered me a radio show.  I accepted and by doing so, immediately doubled my salary.  It happens.  I once had to turn down a lucrative radio show offer because the station was in another state and having been unemployed awhile, I simply couldn't afford to move and with a 3-year-old child, I wasn't going without my family.  It killed me to say no to that good job, but I had no choice. Two months later, I landed a nice radio gig about a mile away from my home.  I loved that job and stayed at that station for 11 years, a record for radio show longevity, for me.  I like to say that I practically raised my son with the money that job paid.

All this reminiscing has a point...honest.  Its meant to demonstrate that things have a way of working out for the best, even when it doesn't seem like it at the time.

As we all know too well, there are no guarantees in life - but I believe that if you work diligently, have integrity and are good at what you do things will eventually go well for you, if not exactly the way you expected.  There are always new horizons and for a young man with salable skills (IT is a solid job field) you have a lot to look forward to in your career, even if it seems stymied, now.  As Liz noted, the economy is tight and jobs are harder to come by.  Employers  can be highly selective (if not always prescient) but that will inevitably change and your chance to advance will surely arrive.  As I stated in an earlier post: never give up.

Jim
