Title: Long-term 7/12 Results
Post by: gman100 on May 05, 2010, 08:29:52 pm
Hello everyone,

I had the 7/12 done and it has been nearly a year. I've been gaining back a little facial movement, from a complete paralysis for about a year to a little movement on my lip. Most of the posts I've read seem to be from individuals who have the had surgery done in the last two years or so. I'm not sure when they started doing this procedure, but has anyone had this done several years ago, like 5 years ago? I would like to know a general time-line of progress that people have had? Did any semblance of non-conscious movement return? What degree of movement did people regain? I was a 6 and now a 5. I've read that the facial nerve is physically cut during this procedure... but it seems that some people have movement before the procedure and they definitely don't lose it after the procedure.

Thanks!

I may be TOO far out - I had it done 13 years ago...but no...no non-conscious movement

I ad my 12/7 done about 5 years ago.  I can smile now, closed mouth and a small open mouth smile.  My eye shuts most of the way.  No blinking or movement unless I think about it.  Highly recommend facial retraing.  At rest I look ok.  It takes alot of work to  move    yoour tongue withou your face moving, at least for me it does.  Karen

My ear on the 7/12 side is numbed, when I touch my scar even way down at the bottom of my neck I get sensation in my earlobe. Did anyone get anything like this?

No I didn't get any sensation in the ear lobe when touching the scar. Weird ???
My lower ear lobe is still a little numb and will remain so from what I've been told but that.
As far as movement, did you get movement on the lower or upper lip? Should  be the upper. I had no movement on the upper lip , but movement on the lower lip, which was odd.
Nerves are weird! My surgeon gave it two years before he decided I needed the extra surgery, (coming up!)

I had the 7/12 done about 4 months after my resection, that was almost 20 years ago. The doctor explained to me the sole purpose of this was to "babysit" the area and keep nerve innovation active in the area, I can make my fave move with moving my tongue, helpful for "posed" pictures but that's about all it provided me with.
