I've heard Houston is beautiful but don't envy you having to move.  I guess since I'm in NYC I get out of having to help with the boxes!   Good luck!!

Kay .....

Other than the sheer mound of energy it takes to pack up and move, it does not sound like you are all that unhappy about moving to Houston.  I hope that is the case!  Are you keeping the girls in school where they are until the end of the year?

Just kidding but i really am a FUN person and I can guarantee lots of laughs!!  ;D

..... and yes, you definitely are a fun person and I am very envious of the Houstonites who will now get to see you on a regular basis!

Prayers for strength for the actual, physical move!

I will be working on something you can do from NY!!

Priscilla~
US?  Me?  Mischief?  Phyl, you better keep some bail money handy!

Yes, I will be closer to everybody in and around Houston.  I think that this move will be the next great adventure in our lives and we have prayed & prayed that God will put us where He wants us (there was a chance we could stay put & Dave could do it from here - he will be over BCP at an office here, Houston, CA and NY so obviously he can't be everywhere at once).  This is where I was raised and my mom lives here.  My father is deceased so it breaks my heart that she will be all alone but I think that she will eventually (she'll help us get settled 1st) pack up & move to the DFW area where my brother and her cousins/friends live.  She is good now to go to my bro's to watch the grankids do their activities there so I know we will still see a LOT of her.  The hardest thing is telling people and their reactions but like I told Dave, I'm glad that they don't say, "OH GOOD, you are leaving - I couldn't stand being around you anyway!!"    ;)  Dave's parents & 2 of his siblings and their families live in Houston so they are SUPER excited.

I feel like I have had a few adversities in my life and have dealt with them in a positive way so this will be OK too - just kind of hard right now!  Oh yeah, and SOOOOOO much to do - I haven't been sleeping well because my mind just won't stop...

Gosh, Kay..you know I'd LOVE to help with the packing and unpacking, but I'm soooo far away.  Oh well.  If you ever move to Virginia Beach, I've got ya covered!   ;)

My best moving advice - get rid of as much stuff as you can before you go.  You'd be amazed and how much stuff you have that you don't need anymore.  My friends and neighbors all know when I'm planning a move because the "door prizes" begin.  No one leaves my house empty handed.  "It was good seeing you - take this crock pot".  Then as a final parting gesture - have a bbq, invite a lot of people - cook what you can and then before they leave, put the contents of your fridge and freezer on the counter and give everyone a bag to take stuff home.

I know you'll do well and it will be an adventure for you.  Isn't everything you do an adventure?   :D  At least you already have some connections down there and won't have to start at the very beginning to figure things out.

Get some sleep - this will all work out.  Tackle one thing at a time.

Lori

Darlin', of COURSE everyone is goign to miss you - but think of all the friends you have yet to meet in Houston.  I've moved all over the countryover the last 30 years, and it is always sad to leave the "old" place behind, but exciting to make new friendships in the new place.  And, Houston is a great city!

And, Lori is right - get rid of stuff.  Garage sale, hostess gifts, whatever - it is amazing how much stuff we accumulate.

Sending you a great big hug,
Deb

Kay ~

Congratulations on your move to Houston!  It appears as if this will be a positive experience.  Sorry, I can't lift anything heavy and besides, my arms won't reach from here to Texas.  ;)

As someone who moved ten times in less than 20 years (my profession practically demanded a peripatetic lifestyle) I second Lori's advice about jettisoning unneeded items before you pack.  Yard sales are great for this and Goodwill Industries never turns down contributions.  I don't know if your husband's employer is picking up the tab for the move but if not - and movers are hideously expensive - Greyhound bus lines used to allow you to ship clothing and soft goods (no furniture or appliances) for very low rates.  We haven't moved in over 20 years so this may not be true any longer but it might be worth a phone call to Greyhound if you're paying for the move.  If not - never mind.  :)

My adult son has a friend in Houston (originally from Oklahoma) working in the IT field and doing very well.  Although his job is relatively secure and he is paid fairly (he's a call center supervisor for a large, regional cable company) my (unmarried) son plans to move to Houston in another year or so (when his student loans and other bills are paid off) to get away from onerous Connecticut taxes, winter weather and the sinking northeast economy.  I told him that if he finds Houston to be as good as it seems (he visited last year) we may join him.  I was only half-kidding.  Although a move would be difficult (we have decades of collected 'stuff' in our attic and some very dear friends here) I would consider it for the same reason my son is planning to move.  Although I'm retired, our income would go a lot farther in a state with a lower cost of living and the warmer weather always sings a siren song to easterners.

I know you'll light up any neighborhood you settle in Kay, and with your servant's heart, you'll always contribute in ways that you may not even realize.  Houston will be fortunate to have you.

Jim

I don't envy your move ... last move I made was 50 feet or so out of the trailer we lived in while building the house and it like to have did me in ...

Good luck and as others have said ... this is a great time to de-clutter ...and you will get there with a few ready made friends ...

Are y'all looking for like a 5th Wheel or just a trailer?  I know someone with one for sale but it is just a pop up.  Have you checked ebay?  I know that sounds weird but my brother got a car on there - it has been great & he is still driving it!

Kay, I haven't been on here in a few days, and just saw this. Congrats on moving to Houston. I know it can be traumatic moving...we've done it 10 times(when our kids were pretty young). Even though my wife and I are originally from Oklahoma, we consider ourselves Houstonians now. Good luck on the move....can't wait to meet up sometime. Sounds like you already are pretty familiar with the area, but let me know if you need any help.

I am very excited to have Kay become the newest member of our Houston Chapter of the ANA support group!  She will be very welcomed anywhere in the Houston area she decides to settle.
I'm hoping to be able to catch a soccer game or two, to watch her girlies play!

Donnalynn,

My area is full of all kinds of trailers, fifth wheels and all the rest of the recreational vehicles for sale  check Craigslist for Houston and Galveston...............we also have two wonderful airports.....for the North part of town and internal flights...Intercontinental or Bush, for the Southern parts of the city, it is Hobby Airport...Southwest, Delta and several others fly into that airport.

Good luck with your move to Houston, K

Moves are no fun. I remember, and I had the military packing us! Now I understand about waiting for the BAHA after you get the girlies settled.

When I am a winter texan in Corpus Christi, maybe we can meet up (in 5 -10 years :D)

Maureen,

It's so much easier with the military moving you - just break everything beforehand and save them the trouble.  That way, there's not dissapointment on the other end of the move - you already know what condition it's going to be in!   :o

Kay, you'll do just fine.  And think of how much you can get done with Donnalynn helping you pack!  How sweet of her to make the trip!  And I know she'll want to swing through Virginia Beach on the way - I'll probably be packing to move around that time too!  See, Donnalynn, you can help us both with just one trip!  Isn't that nice of us to do that for you?   ;)

So Lori, you're not moving AGAIN, are you?

Miraculously, we never had any problems with broken or stolen items. We didn't have  much nice stuff, and what we did we pre packaged or took it with us in our car. You should have seen our car :o :o My husband was insistent on pre bubble wrapping lots of items. Also helped that we didn't have to move like every two years (or one year).

Our last move, he was in Afghanistan, so it was just me. I did the minimum, and everything came back intact :) :)

Distant memories now, wheewwwww.

Is someone packing you up, K? Hope so....
Maureen

Well...we think that it will include packer/movers (it better - I don't think Dave would do it if it didn't).  HOWEVER, we are still waiting on HR with the final details - even though he is there working this week! - and we found out yesterday that the reason why it hasn't been approved is that the MAIN, BIG boss says she didn't know about it!!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME????  I have been living in limbo for about 3 months here waiting on them to make up their minds.  Even though moving was NOT what I wanted, I was glad to have an answer (& we think that us being in Houston is God's will)...now I'm back to limbo land!  AAAARRRRGGGGG!!!

Kay, are you sure Dave didn't join the military and forget to tell you?  Sounds typical to me!   ;)

Moe, we are in military housing at the moment and were waiting for the house in TN to sell before we bought something here.  Now the the house in TN is FINALLY sold, we're shopping for one in VA.  It won't be a long move - within a couple of miles so my kids will be at the same school and I'll be close to the beach.  I learned after my first military move not to buy any furniture that I actually like or that has any value (which is also a good guideline when one has small children and pets anyway).  Maybe after this next move, which had better be my last, I'll actually get some nice furniture.

Donnalynn...always one step ahead.  You're supposed to stop here AFTER you've helped Kay pack!   :D

OK - so for TODAY...the move to Houston is back ON..."Lillian" approved it - the only glitch left is for the HUGE boss to sign off but they don't think that will be a problem since he just depends on his other people to really work stuff like that & then he signs off.  Dave's new DIRECT boss must have seen the package b/c he told Dave that he "would really be pleased"  He is actually driving around one of the communities now and we are talking on the phone...wish I could look at the houses too.  Hopefully soon...

Tired of the rain, can't take extreme heat, yahdah yahdah yahdah! If it were up to me we'd sell it all and buy a motor home and travel! It's not up to me! :P

Right now, we are looking in Sienna Plantation and Cinco Ranch - we are pretty much open to anything, but Fort Bend & Katy are supposed to have the best schools.  That and a neighborhood with LOTS of kids and families is our main priority!  When we moved into our current house, there were NO KIDS and it about killed our kids - it is a GREAT house but the neighborhood was all people that their kids were in college or newly married.  Seems like now there are getting to be more new families with little (2-3) kids but we don't want to make that mistake again - esp. moving to a whole new city!  Even though I know that they aren't super close to each other, they kind of form a triangle to where Dave has to go to work (Allen Parkway-the AIG buildings) so the commute is about the same.  That new Ft Bend Tollway seems to be really good to get there (& it is proposed to go even farther out - don't know when?).  He can do a flex schedule so he will probably go in at 7 so he can leave at 4 & be home with us more!  Yea!

Get that GPS programmed, girl!!

Got it!  We can always meet in the middle.   When we bought our house, we were in the same situation.  A lot of babies and toddlers on the street, but only one kid close to age for mine, and that was only for Meredith.  The plus is that Meredith and her friend Brian were three and four when they met.  Now they are still best friends, they are getting married within three weeks of each other, and are in each other's weddings.  Too sweet!.
When I retire, one of the first things I want to do is renew my memberships to the museums.  Then after we do that kind of thing in the morning, we can do the lunchy/shoppy thing until you need to be home for girlies. That and anything else that looks like fun!

Hi K -

I haven't been around in a while, but hope you get the final word on the move soon.  Living in limbo is hard to say the least.  My husband has a friend who lives in Katy and loves it there.  If you end up there, I hope you do too.

His kids are grown (in their 20s, but he said it's a great place for kids).

OF COURSE I would LOVE for anyone to come at ANY time!  I LOVE to have people over - the more the merrier!  Yesterday, I had 7 extra girlies and one mom over between basketball games to hang out for several hours!!  ;D

We are thinking now that we *might* build (more energy efficient & more time to sell current house) but my in-laws have a HUGE house & pool and are always up for a big party too!!   :D

Never say never, Jan.

In all seriousness, I also said I'd never remarry. My first husband developed drug and alcohol addictions. I was smart enough to leave before he ruined my life and our daughters, but there was plenty of damage done.

I think I would have lived quite happily as I was, but I did meet someone who is everything my first husband was not, and my life is so much richer for having him and our two additional children in it. He adopted my daughter after my ex died (who was raising a huge stink about it even though he played ZERO part in her life) and I have never looked back.

Enjoy your life, just don't close the door to possibilities.

Thanks for the encouragement, Sara, but I don't think I'd do it ever again.  Live with someone, once my kids have left the "nest", maybe.  Marriage, not highly likely.  Although Lori has mentioned knowing a single doctor who can cook.  Hmmmmm  ;)  ;D

Glad things turned out well for you though.

Kay -

I'm with you on the "not always clean" house.  There are actually times I'll invite someone over just so I have an excuse to finally do a thorough cleaning.

I just got around to cleaning my house yesterday - won't tell you how long it's been  ::) - let's just say it took a huge part of my afternoon.  Missed my workout, but today's another day.

WE SETTLED ON AN AREA AND ARE BUILDING A HOUSE!!!

After 3 days of INTENSE house hunting, we finally settled on SP on the 4th day and are building a house - definitely big enough for LOTS of company, a guest room and 2 water parks with 50 guests passes a year!!  Come one, come all!!  It is west and north of downtown (not NW b/c it is more WEST) and is one of the MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITIES.  The house will be started about the middle of June and should be finished the 1st or 2nd week in September.  The girlies will go ahead & start school there so they won't have to change after a few weeks.  We will go at the end of June/1st of July and stay with Dave's family until the house is complete.  Grandma & Grandad (well, I KNOW Grandma) WANT us to stay with them for a while - I doubt they will still have that attitude after a couple of months!!  If you want to see pics, I have a few that I can email you or there's one on FB if you are interested...don't have the time or energy to do all the stuff to get them up here!  We are fine with the time frame b/c that will give us time to sell this house - please say a few prayers for us on that front!!  After looking at TONS of houses - resale and new - we see what a great house & HUGE yard we have here so hope that is good!!

Yea and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Should be an interesting summer! Best of luck, lots of patience with the house being built, and plant St. Joseph in the front of your house-I think he goes face down , facing the house (?- catholic tradtion that really does work. The house WILL sell- just maybe not when you want it to but it will!!!!!!)

Too bad you were still teaching last week - we could have used you during all that looking!!  We would have had so much fun!  My cousin (who just moved to Bay City from living her whole life in a little town around here) went with us one day - we laughed and laughed.  One lady asked Dave what was bringing us there and he said work, to which she replied, "Oh, what do you do?"  Serious as can be, Dave said, "I make and sell meth...all the elementary schools know me so I have to move..."  I couldn't believe he said that - it was sooooo funny!

Kay .....

Dave is hilarious!  So glad you have decided to build ..... we had a blast doing ours almost 20 years ago now ...... but be prepared to go way over your allotments for various things, like lighting, floor finishing, etc.  I'd love to do it again ..... but do not relish the thought of getting rid of almost 20 years worth of accumulation!

Keep us posted (and pictured) on all of the developments as they unfold!

The good (or not so good - however you want to look at it) is that the price is TOTALLY set!!  The price we got Friday is exactly what we will pay.  The one drawback is that while you get to pick a LOT of stuff, you have to stick with some of their guidelines.  That is OK with us.  Probably the one thing I didn't get to do was change anything outside because this house was already slated to be built and the outside (bricks, elevation, etc) had alrady been approved by the community.  I probably would've picked a redish brick but then Dave said he didn't love red - guess it was good that was alrady picked for me!!  ;)  I love the elevation - it has the Austin stone around the door - I am a cheapie so I don't know if I would have sprung for that!!  :D  PM your email if you want me to send you a pic!!  The model looks almost exactly like ours will...ours will just have one more gable...

If anyone gets those Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons and throws them away - could you please send them my way??  I can use TONS getting all the stuff for a new house!  My plan is to get a little stuff here and there to spead out all the costs...

Thanks!

Congrats on deciding to build! 2 things--argon filled windows and sprayed in Icynene insulation.  Will save you a lot of energy bills and is eco-friendly.

Capt'n~
I don't know exactly what everything is, I just know that it is all energy efficient and has the highest star rating!  Part of the reason why we are building is because of the decrease in bills!

I got confused (that silly stroke) - we are a bit south of downtown, NOT North!!

Starting setting the forms to pour the foundation!  We are leaving for Houston on the 1st - can't believe it is here!  Had a couple of going away parties this week and then one more on the 27th - makes things sink in a little more.  We will go this week and get 2 of the girlies from camp in Missouri, get home on the 26th, Open House & party on 27th, Addi leaves for Mystery Trip on the 28th, Addi returns evening of 30th and we leave morning of 1st!  Busy few days and LOTS of time in the car!

House here still hasn't sold - please say a few prayers for us - I REALLY would like to be able to keep the one we are building!!

Love and lots of prayers!

Wow, what an emotional and physical roller coaster you are on right now! DO take extra vitamins as  Clarice suggested. Vit C, echinacea, whatever it takes.
I'll say an prayer to St. Joseph to get the house sold, but he doesn't always cooperate!

Well, as people like to say around here "today is the day" - at least I am not having surgery again!!   ;)  However, today is the day to start our trek southward.  We are leaving for Houston but stopping in Southlake at my brother's house (& checking out a community for my mom) and then arriving in Houston on Friday.  I am sad but know it will be OK...We haven't sold our house yet - we had a VERY good Open House Sunday but no follow up.  ???  On a brighter note, they poured the foundation on our new house last Friday! i"m still choosing to remain optimistic that our house will sell so we will be able to get that one!

Prayers, fingers crossed, whatever, in hopes your house sells quickly so you can have that worry lifted.

Hey there Kaybo!

I will be in town until the 13-23 or so of July.  I am available for mischief or necessary errands every day except Mondays and Thursdays.  I tutor on those days.  Keep me in the loop so I know what you are up to!  You have my number.  I will keep your house in my prayers for a quick sale.  Did you bury Saint Whomever-it-is upside down in your backyard?

Come on already St. Joseph, stop playing around.
Send a buyer to K's home, pleeeze.

It will sell. You've done what you can and now it's time for the realtor to bust his or her behind while you get settled in Houston.
We were two mortgage owners for about year and a half, and survived.
No fun, but it's only money, you got your beautiful family.
Stressful time, hang in there, K ;)

Hi Kay!
Welcome to Houston! (not that i'm in houston - just looks like today is the day when you arrive).
My mom and step dad lived in houston a while. I hope you get a chance to meet the AN people there!
You seem to be one to hop right in and be involved, so i don't have any doubt all of you will make lots of friends at church and school, etc and hopefully, after a couple of months, you'll feel right at home.
I didn't realize you had family there - that's good!
Take care! I know it's hard to say goodbye to those left behind. Maybe everyone will take you up on your offer to visit!

Just a little update:  they are putting brick/stone on the house - it is really going up fast - hope that doesn't mean it will come down fast!!  :o

The main thing, though, I got to hang out with Ms. Priscilla yesterday!  We didn't do much - she just came over here and we visited over sandwiches and watching the girlies play in the pool!  Great times to come!  Oh, & be jealous Lori, she saw the Pick-a-Weenie up close & personal!!

We had a great time!  ;D  Her girlies are gorgeous and very well-mannered to boot.  It was wonderful to be able to sit and talk about whatever came to mind without worrying about the time.  I am so looking forward to many of these visits.  And, Ms. Lori, the legendary Peke-a-weenie is a cutie :D.

Damn!  Now I'm jealous.  Lori never did send me that Pick-A-Weenie that she promised me  :(

Glad the house is coming along, Kay.  Will it be completed by the time the girlies start school?

Today I decided that Lori and I really do need to visit you - maybe not for Thanksgiving, but some time in the very near future.  I've put Pooter on our list of VIPS to visit while we are in TX, and now I'll add Priscilla to the list also.  Oh yeah, and Patrick.

Seriously, that would be great!!  Check out SW  airlines - I think they have some deals right now!  We could have a big party at my house!

The house won't be finished when school starts, but it won't be long after that!  They will befin at the school's that they will be attending so we will commute each day.  We may move to Dave's sister's house so we will be closer each day...we'll see.  We aren't TOO terrible far away here either.

Today was the 1st day that I REALLY noticed the heat - I was out running errands all day and registering the girlies for their new schools...I really wish I was just hanging out in the pool!  I really dread next week now - I am going to be a counselor at church camp outside San Antonio and I bet it will be hotter than blue blazes!!  All the buildings are supposed to be ACed though so it should be OK - at least I get to be with the girlies.  THEN we get to cool off and be pampered at the Lazy River at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort!  Thank goodness for wonderful (& generous) in-laws - esp. when we are so stressed about our house not selling yet!

K   ;D

PS - Did I put on here that some guy has been interested enough to ask for the deed restrictions - he wants to build a shop - AND came back to the Open House for an hour?  It is a single man (really 4 bedrooms?) and the 3 car garage is not enough for him...kind of spooky but I don't care as long as it sells!!   ???

So what's wrong with this picture? Sweet Priscilla is at my new house with my sweet, little mama working & I am on the Forum!! Crazy! Ok, really I'm in the pick-up line waiting on the girlies!

After many sleepless nights & harrowing days, we finally are owners of a new house. We had a LOT of trouble with our loan, even though we'd done EVERYTHING they asked (it's a long story & if you really want to hear it, PM me). Our house is beautiful & I think we will be very happy here. Someday soon I will be announcing a Houston get together at my house...HOWEVER, I have to have my stuff. Did I mention that the moving truck broke down??  It was supposed to be here today!  Trying to have a good attitude!  At least it gave us a day to line shelves & do other errands!
Thanks Ms. Priscilla for all your help!

The house is so-o-o-o-o lovely.  I am suffering from a fatal case of cabinet envy because Kaybo has SO MANY in her kitchen! Now we just have to find a home for everything when it finally arrives.  I had a wonderful visit w/Kay and her sweet mom....after I got very lost trying to follow the Google directions.  It would have been nice if they had told me to turn right on Hwy. 6, a MAJOR road!! :-\  Bad directions, Google. Now I know the way and it is just one hour from her front door to mine.

Coco Puffs with forks  ???

Cheerios I can see, but Coco Puffs?  Doesn't that result in them turning into crumbs?

On a related - but strange note - a friend of my daughter's eats Doritos out the bag with a fork.  I've never seen that in my life  ::)

I am so thrilled that Kaybo is so close to me. :o :o  We can visit and solve all the world's problems, and even get a little "lunchy/shoppy" thing  accomplished.  Thank you for the lunch treat...next time it is on me, and we can check out all the shops near me.  Anyone of you ladies want to join us?  And by the way, your house looked normal to me.  I still want your kitchen in my house! She has a ridiculous amount of cabinet space, and her counters go on forever. I came home and got my house ready to get the carpets cleaned tomorrow.
Thanksgiving is approaching and now is the time to get that done before I decorate for Christmas.

Note to self: Avoid the Steep Bank shortcut to McKeever when school is being dismissed!!  I sat in traffic for 20 minutes because from my vantage point way back at the end of the line, I couldn't tell I was in the turn lane for the school  :-[.  Lesson learned.

Sometimes it takes awhile to break in to established "groups" in a new location ..... but knowing you ..... you are a super, open, loving woman that those lucky people in Houston will soon welcome you with open arms!

Congratulations on the sale of your home in Amarillo.

My wife and I moved 10 times in 10 years during our first decade of marriage (the itinerant life of a radio D.J) so I know something about the relocation adjustments (which are perfectly normal) but I'm confident that you'll rapidly become a vibrant part of your new community. :)

Yay congrats on the house!
Totally relate to missing the old friends (in TX) and we have been here in WA for 3 years! Texans are so friendly!
Always takes me quite a while to make real good friends, and here in WA we live more rural, and everything is so spread apart, compared to Corpus Christi area.
Thank God for facebook and forums! Plus we moved here post AN surgery, so it is a different me, trying to get used to a different part of the country.
So continue to shine your beautiful self, K. At least you got Priscilla!

We spent a " lovely" 6 years there, and have a little "winter home" In Portland TX, over the bridge, that is being rented now. I loathed the weather 6 months out of the year, and am looking forward to going there in the winter (some day after all the college tuitions have been paid off ::) ) !
