Title: My BP100
Post by: leapyrtwins on March 11, 2010, 09:58:16 pm
Got the call this morning that my BP100 has finally arrived  ;D

When I ordered it, no one told me that Cochlear is currently taking 6 - 8 weeks to fill orders.  While that isn't a problem for those who just got the implant and have to wait 90 days to attach their device, it's a real bummer for those upgrading, like me  :(

I have a programming appointment with the audiologist on April 6th - which seems like an eternity now, but was the only day I could reasonably take time off of work.

I'm hopeful that I'll love the BP100 just as much as I love my Divino and I'm especially looking forward to using my MP3 adapter.  It's supposed to work very well.

I'm glad you are finally getting it , Jan. I know you have been eagerly anticipating the upgrade for some time.

I almost asked why you didn't just use your MP3 hookup on the other thread, but realized that you weren't able to yet.

Jan,

I'm so happy for you.   >:(  Oh, and a little jealous.

I'm almost hoping when I go to find out what's wrong with my Divino at the end of the month, they tell me they can't fix it and order me a BP100 as a replacement.  Just in case that doesn't happen, I'm not planning on running it over with my car or anything.

Jan getting her head upgraded?  Hmmmm...always thought I'd be reading she was finally getting it examined!   ;D

Woo Woo!  Congrats, Jan!  I look forward to your comments about how well you like it, etc..  I'm still waiting for the rich uncle to foot my bill.  Heh.

When my audiologist recommended I wait for the BP100 (after my florida vacation), I mentioned to her that I heard there was a back log...she is able to get them within 3 weeks of ordering them...Maybe because its not a prefered method of hearing here in Ontario (the BAHA),?????

Getting my head upgraded  ???  :D

I have to honestly say that I'm a little nervous about upgrading.  On one hand, the BP100 has capabilities that go far beyond the Divino, but on the other hand, I love my Divino and I'm a little concerned about all the programming issues that people have talked about with the BP100.

Guess I'll just try to stay cautiously optimistic and see what happens.

Jo -

I didn't know that an order backup existed until I told my audiologist that I was ready to pay for the BP100 and she told me I should wait until I actually had it in hand.  When I asked how long that would be, she said she'd call me - that they were taking 6 - 8 weeks to arrive.

O.K.  I am still waiting to hear from my insurance in regards to the BAHA or  like Brian waiting on that rich uncle {that of course I don't have  ;)}      BUT, in my research I have seen the MP3 adapter and still don't get it.    I love my MP3, but really haven't used it much at all since my SSD 4 months ago.    Can you guys elaborate on that for me a bit better?

THANKS

HI Denise
Not that i have seen the device(MP3 adapter) but my guess is, it attaches to the BAHA...actually, I know it attaches to the BAHA as there is a plug in for it...so I'm guess the sound is sent to the good ear.   Someone will correct me if I\m wrong.

The sound is not sent to the good ear.  The MP3 adapter attaches directly to the BAHA device - no need for an ear plug as far as I can tell.  I haven't been able to use it yet, because the one I have attaches to the BP100 and I'm still wearing the Divino.

Denise -

there is a single, cheap solution to using your MP3 player and getting stereo sound while being SSD.  Post op I purchased what is called a mono-plug adapter and a single ear bud from Radio Shack (costs about $10).  The adapter plugs into the "port" at the top of my iPod and then the single ear bud attaches to it.  The adapter takes the stereo sounds that you'd normally hear in both of your ears and converts it to a single (mono) source.  It really works well.

Jan, may I ask a question about the MP3 adapter. Does it take both left and right channels (is that the right word?) from the MP3 player to the BAHA processor so that your hearing ear is free to hear other ambient sound? It seems like that would be a distinct advantage over the mono plug adapter or single ear bud.

Good question, Sara.

The MP3 adapter doesn't come in left and right sides - but the BAHA devices do.  For example, when I ordered both my Divino and my BP100, I had to tell the audiologist that I was deaf left.  I'm not really sure why this makes a difference, but it does.

I would guess it has to do with directionality somehow, but like you I don't know why -- good thing the Cochlear experts do.

There isn't a picture of the MP3 adapter at the Cochlear website, so I'm trying to figure out just how it works. Is there a jack that fits into the MP3 player and then the other side plugs into the BAHA processor? Do you have to wear anything in your hearing ear, or does the MP3 adapter deliver stereo sound into the BAHA processor to be conducted to the hearing side?

This technology fascinates me.

Jan,

The reason the sides matter on the actual BAHA processor is due to the placement of the microphones.  You want them pointing more towards the front because that's the direction you would normally be receiving sound.  I guess most people don't talk into the back of someone's head.  Although, if you aim your BAHA right, you could!

I'm trying to remember what the MP3 thing looked like that I tried out at the symposium - I don't recall it being as big as the one in the picture Brian posted, but I was probably so amazed at the sound quality that it could have been the size of a cinder block and I probably wouldn't have noticed.

This one is the Divino or Intenso model:

Whereas this one is the BP100 model:

Not that there is whole lot of difference, mind you.  ;)

Sara -

you are correct about the technology involved.  One end of the "cord" has an adapter that plugs into a MP3 player "port" and the other end has 3 prongs that plug into the BP100.

The cord I have is the shorter of the 2 for the BP100 and it doesn't look like the link Pooter posted.  In fact that link looks like 2 cords??

I tried to access the link Steve gave us for the BP100 adapter, but only get the Cochlear logo not a picture of the adapter.

Lori -

we did try the adapter @ the ANA Symposium.  If you recall, they had it attached to an iPod and they were letting BAHA wearers just attach the BP100 to their abutments.  Nothing went into the ear.

Thanks for the explanation about the microphones; makes total sense.  Question for you though, since the Intenso doesn't have a microphone (from what I've heard) does that mean it doesn't come in right and left models?

Still not positive I get it even after Sara asked this.   SO, would you wear anything in your hearing ear?   What exactly is this device helpful for....delivering stereo sound?

Denise, it looks to me like there nothing would be worn in the hearing ear. The device would deliver stereo sound for conduction around to the hearing ear. I think it would be very helpful in that the hearing ear is not blocked by headphones or a bud and you would still hear ambient sound.

that is what I'm thinking Sara....nothing in the good ear which is good as it leaves it open...I dont think I'd get the MP3 attachment if it went into the good ear....
I'm looking forward tomy BP100 day on April 12

I got an e-mail from the Michigans Cochlear website rep and looks like they may be having a Community thing in the next month or 2.   That will be GREAT if I can go...........it's only 1 1/2 hrs. away, so not as bad as my current place.     I will be sure to post on the forum if they set it for sure.    She said they would probably have most of that stuff too, so I can check it all out.............while probably 'still waiting'  ;)

Jan

Jan,

I wear a pair of Intenso and the microphone is on the side of the unit facing out.    It really doesn't matter which side you put it on.   There is no directional left or right but, I wish it was facing forward on either side.  However, I still label my Intenso "L" and "R" because I know which one I got first.  I originated got the Left side first and then 7 months later after my Bilat surgery,  I got the right Baha so I labeled it "R."  I know there is a serial number inside the battery compartment.  The setting on both units are set the same but I have one slightly turned up more than the other one when I have it on.    Ken

Ken -

thanks for the clarification.

I guess I realized that the Intenso had a microphone, but it's not a directional microphone like the Divino, right?  I think that's what you are saying.

Denise -

glad there's going to be a Cochlear meeting in your area soon.  I think it will be worth it to attend.  It's great to read about the BAHA, but another thing entirely to see one "live".

Thanks Jan   I actually have seen one live.   I got to try one in the audiologist office in December, but iit was only for a bit then.   At that time I was only 1 month post AN surgery and they told us an approximate cost I just put the thought on delay.

I got another email yesterday from Michigans rep that she will be having a little coffee get together with other people and it's only about an hour drive for me............of course, I have something else that same day, ugh!      Linda H. is the one I'm dealing with and she is GREAT!
Thanks to you too Jan for all the info and helping me out on the Cochlear site!!!!!

Can wait to hear your guys updates in April.   Seems like I've run across about 3-4 people getting the BP100 in April  ;)

Best Wishes!!
