Title: Eyelash problem
Post by: mandy721 on November 12, 2009, 05:04:16 pm
Does anyone have any tips about how to deal with eyelashes which don't point tbe right direction?

Background is,,,
I Glad-wrap my right eye every night to try to keep it moist.   Helps, but the side-effect is...my eyelashes have been "trained" to grow down, into my eye, occasionally poking me.  I've tried to use an eyelash curler, but when I get it close enough to my eye to be effective, I jab my eye.  Just wondering if any of you have this problem (wacky eyelashes)?  How do you deal with them?  What if an eye curler isn't an option?

Sorry I don't have any good suggestions but also interested in what others have to say since the curler doesn't work for me, either..

Hi Mandy

My eyelashes poke me because they are so long and the weight of the eye ointment doesn't allow them to curl up like they use to.  I too use an eyelash curler, every morning before I put the ointment back in after my shower.  I don't know if it helps but I do it anyway.  I do trim my eye lashes when they poke my eye, they grow back slowly so I have to do it every now and then.  I don't know if this will help with your issue or not but figured it was worth mentioning.  Goodluck, Jill

I have the same problem because I tape my eye ever night. I take my time and use the eyelash curler in the morning before i appy my make up. I hold it a little longer than usual and squeeze tight. It is not like the other eyelash but certainly much better and it doesn't bother my eye ball now.

Ken is so afraid of getting anything close to his eye that he uses his fingers to guide the lashes.  He says it helps.  After reading Jill Marie's post, he is thinking of trying to trim the lashes.  I think the eyelash curler would be the best bet, even the opthamologist suggested using one.

I have had a bit more luck with the curler when my lashes are et but not greasy (post-shower).  I am looking for some clear mascara to see if it might help since any color would just draw more attention.     ;)  Thanks for the post.  Nice to know I'm not the only one ....  Karen

Hey there!  I have a gold weight and it did affect not only the direction of my lash growth, but also the quanitity of lashes.  I recently tackled this problem.  There are several things you can do.  First, go to Wal Mart (or any drugstore) and get the Revlon Eyelash Curler that has red, rounded edges.  This curler is more effective with eye gel and doesn't create that harsh 90 degree angle bend.  When you use this curler, curl at the base of your lashes and then again at the middle of your lashes for a longer-lasting curl.  Second, either get a prescription for Latisse to lengthen your lashes or get a generic (Careprost) from All Day Chemist (online--great customer service!) without a prescription.  Careprost is much cheaper than Latisse, btw ($10 vs. $120).  I've been using Latisse for 3 months and very few of my eyelashes point downward now.  I still have to curl them, but I can live with that.  Now that I know Latisse works, I am in the process of switching to Careprost.  Lumigan is another generic that works well, too.

The result is my eyelashes look more symmetrical and I feel much better :)

I hope this helps!

Hi Janitorx,  I will definitely try the new eyelash curler, mine is old and falling apart anyway so it would be nice to get a new one.  Never thought about curling the lashes in the middle, good idea.  Won't try the eye lash lengthening as my lashes are already pretty long.   Thanks a lot, Jill

I too suffer from the eye lashes pointing down, and they are not that long, so the curler doesn't help. The past few days my eyes have been really bothering me, more so than usual. It is a daily nuisance.
I had my eye half stitched shut for about 4 months, so the lashes still want to point downwards.
I'm going to get my outer eye stitched a little to help with eye function, because of the droopiness of the outer "canthus" -gonna call my eye doc to see if we can get it done sooner than later, because that will help with this feeling of "WHAT is in my eye all the time?"
Maybe an ingrown eyelash.
So annoying.
Anyway,
I'll try those tips, Janiforx. THANKS~ :)

Oh, I forgot to mention the old hairdryer trick which involves heating your eyelash curler.  I don't have to do this step, but it does work really well.  What I like about Latisse/Careprost is that my lashes grow long enough to point slightly upward.  I still have few errant eyelashes, though.  I wear mascara and I can usually manipulate them more with product.

I have the eyelash problem too.  I use the eyelash curler and then mascara, which seems to help hold them up where they're supposed to be.  If I don't use the mascara, when I put my sunglasses on, my lashes hit the lens and that makes me crazy!   >:(

I think it's due to a lack of muscle tone.  The hairs are held in place by muscles and if those muscles aren't working properly, the lashes tend to droop.  I know mine aren't quite as droopy as they were before my 7/12.

I have the MOST trouble with the BOTTOM lashes growing straight into my eye!!  Any solutions for that...I ususally just use tweezers but that is not always "preventive" enough...

Great subject:  I always have problems with eyelashes...  Like Kay, I tweeze them too, only it's the ones growing down into my eye.  I didn't have much luck with the eyelash curler either - when I'd get to the base of the lash to tighten it,  I felt like I was poking my eye.
My eyelashes go every which way.  & I have the same problem with eyelashes hitting my glasses !
I'm also going to check & see if Target has the red Revlon curler.  Also,  I never thought about heating the curler !  great advice.
Even though I use eye makeup remover to help remove the lubricant from my lashes,  they always seem to have a film on them,  maybe it's b/c I have to use it so often...
Thanks everyone for your responses....  Always good thoughts,  Nancy

Okay ladies:  I bought the Revlon 'red' eyelash curler - Thanks janitorx,  it doesn't hurt at all to curl my lashes ! !  I was trying to use my Shisedo brand.  This Revlon one is great ! !   My eyelashes did curl, not as well as the non AN side but they curled just the same.  I think with continued use it will get better.

Now,  if anyone knows how to keep powdered eyelid coloring &/or eyeliner on that eye - seems the lubricant just wipes it away & I end up looking like I have the color on 1 eye & not the other ! !  Any ideas ? !!
Always good thoughts,  Nancy

I use a Clinic product on my eyelids before I apply powder base eyeshadow and I also use a gel eyeliner.  I do not line the entire top eyelid anymore because it draws attention to my bulging left eye.  Vanity insanity I guess.

Hi Anne Marie:  is the product like an eye makeup remover ?  to cleanse & leave the area dry ?  What's the name of it do tell ! !

Anne Marie and Nancy,

Is it called "Touch Base" by Clinique?  If so, it's not a cleanser, but more of a skin colored.... base... I guess is the right word.  Like primer before you paint the walls.  You just dab a little on, it's like a creamy consistency, and it's supposed to help set the powder and keep it in place.  I use it on the rare occasion I use eye shadow - I'm lucky if I manage to get eyeliner and mascara on half the time.  As far as eyeliner, I also use a waterproof Clinique product.  It comes in a compact like shadow and a little paintbrush looking thing - add a little water, put it on, let it dry and it stays pretty well.

Now I think I might have to try out this red eyelash curler..... I hope someone is getting a commission from all this free advertising!   :D

When I say I'm having a bad hair day most people think it's the hair on my head, which when they look at it they probably agree :D, but I'm talking about eyelash issues.  I haven't had any trouble in quite sometime until I posted on this thread again,  best be getting my butt to the store to get that special eyelash curler then maybe I can quite trimming my long beautiful lashes.   ::)

Lori,

You are right on the money once again!!!  I even spelt the name incorrectly.  I have been using Clinique's "Touch Base" for at least ten years.  I find it helped set my eyeshadow for the entire day or evening.  I use the Clinique gel eyeliner and mascara.  I find my left eye is very sensitive and the Clinique products are not irritating.

I have a question:  I just checked the Touch Base line & saw it's a cream base - how does the 'cream' stay on the lid & how do you put powder over it ?  Wouldn't it clump & get in the creases ??  (can you tell I'm not makeup savvy ?!)  Thanx,  Nancy

Post by: lori67 on March 14, 2010, 07:16:52 am
I guess it's technically a cream base, but it's not really creamy....this is confusing...I'm trying to think of something to compare it to.  It's not creamy like a foundation..more like an eye shadow with a more liquid and less powdery feel.  So, maybe, somewhere in between a foundation and a powder shadow?
Like one of those pastel art crayons we used in art class.

I haven't had a problem with it clumping because you use so little of it and it speads nicely.  It also doesn't seem to get in the creases.

If you can get over to the Clinique counter, they probably have a sample of it you can try before you buy it.

I'm not makeup savvy either - good thing there are people that are or I'd be in trouble!   :D

Nancy,

It is a wonderful product that literally glides on like silk and it more or less dries instantly.  There is no other way to describe it.  There are a few different shades to choose from also.  I like the canvas shade.  It works well with my skin tone.  Check it out.

I used this for years and then switched from Clique to Bare Minerals so i used a powder that did the same thing.  Now I have a product from Studio Gear that is the same as the touch base & I really like it too!!  Still need the red curler!

The search of the special eye lash curler continues!  My gold weight sits a little low on my eye lid, so I don't really bother with eye makeup on the lid itself, but good advice for when I do want to get my self all spiffied up. :)

Here's how I deal with the eyeliner issue:  I tightline with a soft khol pencil (I use Rimmel).  This means I apply liner very close to the lashline in a series of dots.  It takes a little practice to get the technique down, but I find that it looks much better than my attempts to draw a line on my lids.  Sometimes I tightline with an eyeliner brush and wet/dry eyeshadow.  It looks really natural.

If you want a cheapie eye makeup base, then head on over to Ulta and pick up an eye shadow pencil from NYX (hypoallergenic brand, too!).  I use Cream Cheese and Strawberry Milk.  Each pencil will set you back around 4  bucks.  The sales reps at Sephora make samples for almost everything they carry.  Don't be afraid to ask.

One thing I've noticed in general is that my an eye is very sensitive to product.  I used to be able to get away with drugstore shadows, but since the eye weight, not so much.  In fact, I had to toss out a lot of my stuff and buy fewer things of quality.  I can still use drugstore masacara and eyeliner, but that is about it.  Even drugstore concealers irritate that eye!  In general, I've had really good luck with LORAC and BeneFit.  Clinique is really good, too--and much easier to find at the local mall.

Sara, If you want we can work through your eye curler issues together.  I'm afraid of makeup, haven't used it since my surgery in 92 and don't plan on using it as long as EYE have to use so much ointment, not worth the hassle.  Jill

I just bought the Revlon eyelash curler and WOW it is good! Curls well with a good squeeze, doesn't pinch or pull any hair. Use before mascara.
Thanks,

Looking into the eyelash prescription, wondering side affects and danger so close to the eye?

Yay!  I am glad you like it :)  It works just as good as some of those high-end ones sold in Sephora and department stores.

Latisse (Lumigan) was originally intended to be used as an eyedrop to reduce eye pressure in glaucoma patients.  Patients noticed their eyelashes became thicker, darker, and longer after several weeks of use.  There are side-effects, however.  If you do not have brown eyes, your eyes may turn that color with prolonged use.  My eyes are dark brown/black, so this isn't an issue for me.  Your eyelids may also darken.  If mine have, I did not notice it because I have a light olive complexion and that area of my face has been dark since puberty--concealer is my friend.

There is no need to pay $120 for Latisse.  Insurance does not cover it.  There may be some exceptions with chemo patients, but that is pretty much it.  I use Careprost that I purchased from an online pharmacy in India (All Day Chemist) for 10 bucks a pop ($25 flat-rate shipping).  You do not need a prescription to purchase Careprost from ADC.  I am happy with Careprost.  It works just as well as Latisse which I purchased once before I knew better.  I even asked my pharmacist about this route before I ordered, and she walked from behind the counter and told me I had the right idea.

I just wanted to add that I am very cautious in general with meds.  I have asthma and I fork over cash at Tar-jay every 3 months for these meds, even though I can get the generics at ADC.  I only use ADC for Careprost and Retin-A.  I am using retin-a for my uneven forehead wrinkles.  The AN side is smooth as silk; the other side is a bit wrinkly.  Admittedly, this may be a feeble attempt on my part to avoid Botox.

You are so sweet - I was hoping that they haven't changed packaging - I am seeing different Revlon BLACK ones that I think said NEW...Actually, it wasn't Target, it was DVS (went there for PediaSure...).  I certainly haven't been out shopping for a week now... ;)  I was wondering about Ulta - just haven't gotten there yet!

Nancy,

That's the shade I use also.  Sometimes I will just use the touch of base all on its own with no shadow.  I hope you bought when it was bonus time.  That's when I make my purchases.  It makes me feel like a kid in a candy store with a goodie bag.  I so happy I could help.

This is my very first post, so I am getting right to the important stuff -  eyelashes!  The ointment seems to make my mascara run (even waterproof).  Any tips?
