Title: How many days in hospital?
Post by: aj44 on November 01, 2009, 02:52:55 pm
Hello.

On average, how many days does one spend in hospital after AN surgery?

The surgeon will be operating to remove my AN through my skull and he will work from behind my ear.

I was told that I might be in hospital for up to ten days. How long was it for people on this forum who had similar surgery?

Hi AJ
I had retrosigmoid and I was in the hospital two days after the day of surgery.I was released on the 3rd post op day.   It really is a very indivdual thing depending on how quickly you stabilize and how quickly you can get up and around on your own. Good luck and I hope your upcomming surgery goes smoothly!

Hello AJ,

My wife had Translab surgery on 10/29/09 to remove a 3.2 cm AN.  She is to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow (5 days).

I had Middle Fosa and I was discharged on day 5 - although they would have discharged me on day 4 except it was over the weekend and I had a cough on that Friday so I think they were overly cautious since none my dr were around over weekend (and I might add that my insurance approved of the additional day - otherwise I would have been out day 4).

Aj ~

AN post-op hospital stays do vary and are heavily contingent on your doctor's judgment as to the rate of your immediate recovery.  5 days is the average and remains the operative number to consider when making your plans.

I underwent 'Retrosigmoid approach' debulking surgery - no complications - and was released on the morning of my fifth day in hospital or, to be exact, approximately 115 hours after my surgery was completed.

My husband's response was that it seemed liked forever!  He was in hospital for 17 days after his surgery. Nine days on the medical floor and then eight in rehab.

I was rushed to the hospital unexpectedly on a normal Wednesday work day, had a 10-hour surgery Thursday beginning at 3pm, and was released the following Thursday evening.  This has been a life-changing event for me and my family.  Take great care.

I was released on day 3.
Funny I was asked to write a sentence to test my cognitive abilities and I wrote "I want to go home!"
I don't think hospitals are the most restful places.
I am sure that once you are up and doing the zombie shuffle they will let you go home.
Good Luck

I also was in for 5 days the doctors wanted me to be in a little longer for therapy but insurance overruled and was out day 5... depends on your insurance also...

AJ -

best answer is - it all depends.  Everyone is different and has a difference experience; although some of our AN journeys are similar.

The typical hospital stay post op is 4 to 7 days.  I was hospitalized for 6 days I believe, but I had extreme nausea and didn't eat anything (which in hindsight was not a good idea) and as a result I was weak and didn't walk the halls like I was supposed to.  I'm a bit of a rebel  ;)  :D   My doc let me stay a day longer than he intended because we both felt I needed it.

Remember it's not a race.  You and your doctor will know when it's time for you to be released.  Don't rush it; take the time you need.

In on a Tuesday and out on the Sunday morning.  The nausea was the worst part for me (and booming head, but I expected that....)

The doctor told me typically he released patience after 5 or 6 days but I was driving the nurses crazy so they let me go after 4. Everytime they needed to take my vitals I was out walking the halls. I think they got tired of hunting me down all the time. I was pretty determined to get my balance back and was told walking was the best way. Must have worked. I came home and was able to walk around the block.

I had retrosigmoid on a tuesday and was there exactly a week, went home on the next tuesday. They had to make sure I had enough PT sessions that I could walk to the bathroom with help before I went home. They might have kept me a day or two longer if I hadn't told them I was getting depressed and needed to get out. :p

My doc told me my hospital stay would be 3 - 5 days.  I had surgery on Friday and would have been released on Monday but went for physical therapy at the unit in the hospital for a couple of days.  I couldn't stand being there any longer and went home with my surgeon's blessing on Wednesday.  In all honesty, if I hadn't been sort of strong armed by the in house physical therapist who evaluated me, I would have gone home on Monday since I ended up going for more physical therapy in a center near home.

1) AN surgery removed on Monday and checked out on Friday noon.
2) 1st CSF leak surgery stayed 7 days but got Mennigitis and had to stay in hospital until I could go home with PIC line
3) 2nd CSF leak surgery, 8 days but had to get a lumbar drain too as well as the surgery.

Personally I was glad I was able to go home that soon after my AN was removed. You will rest better at home assuming you have no complications. My additional surgeries I stayed in due to fever and some complications so my situation was not the norm, I don't believe.

My surgery was a Thursday, and I was released Tuesday. So I guess that covers six days, though the only days I felt like I was in hosp were Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon, and Fri is rather a blur. So it felt like three days.  :D

Beforehand, I would've thought I wanted the shortest possible stay, but then once I was there, I was kind of nervous about being farther away than a buzzer to medical care. So I didn't mind staying till I was good and ready to go!

Well, I think there is alot of factors, how long you had the tumor and what it's stuck to. and how hard it is to get to based on what proceedure you have. How determined you team are to get it all, IMO after 12 or so hours if it's a large tumor that's been there a long time some doctors give up and leave some of the sac. IMO the biggest factor is what it is pushing one and stuck to.  Most of the 12 crainal nerves are real close where the AN is located and if it stuck to alot of the nerves then it takes a few days for some to recover and some may never recover like the facial nerve.

In my case I had a tumor on the larger scale and it had been there for maybe 20 years, took my team about 17 or so hours to get it all. When you out for that long and removal of the inner ear pieces may require longer recovery. I went in early 5:30 on Thursday and was released late the next Friday.  8 Days.  I had severe head pain and was on morphine two to three days after.  Most Hospitals don't know how to recover an AN patient so they may send you to stroke rehab.

after my operation My vision was sideways, too about 12 or so hours for my brain to adjust to one balancer before it came up to normal.  Beings I was out for so long I didn't feel like eating for a couple of days and by Tuesday I was able to get out of bed.  By Thursday I was walking on my own and they was satisfied late Friday and released me.  I lost 29 lbs in the 8 days I was in the hospital.

Hi, I had my surgery on October 19th at Shands Teaching Hosptial in Gainesville, Florida. I don't believe my surgery was one of the three types of surgery usually done for AN's. My scar is about 12 inches long, no they didn't cut my hair. I will also say, notice can see the scar unless I lifted my hair! No, I don't have thick hair. I had a chance to go home on that Thursday but didn't feel like I was ready. I left the hosptial the next day. My tumor size was 1.6 cm by .07 cm and was inbedded in the bone and the doctor had to stretch my facial nervous more than he felt comfortable with. BUT, I had a mircale, I was walking the streets the second day home. Four days later, I was walking a 1/2 block several times a day. At the end of the first week, I was drivng around the block by myself. If you were to ask me if I would do this again. Well. I if needed I would. My doctors are wonderful. At the begining of my fourth week of recovery, I am feeling back to normal. I still have some swelling around the site but that too will go away in time.

It also lets folks know that there are justed as talent doctors here without going to house.

A very important point, that I've said many times on the Forum.  Although House has a great reputation, it's not a place that everyone can afford to go to - from a financial perspective as well as from a time perspective.  There are numerous highly-qualified, incredible docs "close to home" - and many, many of us are proof of that.

Glad to hear that your recovery is going so well  ;D
