Title: 2nd Anniversary Party Today
Post by: 4cm in Pacific Northwest on August 22, 2009, 08:43:02 am
2 years ago today the brain booger was dissected...

2 years my energy is almost 99% back and the family is taking me out ;D (They have not disclosed to what/where yet  :-\ :))

I will honestly and sincerely tell you that mentally I would not have made it if was not for this forum (my friends who actually get it) and the ANA. (Ginny thank you for coming up with the idea at your kitchen table - years ago) Going to the symposium was SOOH uplifting for me... I have this wonderful image of the captain riding off in the taxi wearing this HUGE pirate hat... the taxi driver may not have got it- but Steve and I did.

OK who's coming to my party?

What do you want to eat?

DHM, A very Happy 2nd anniversary to you and enjoy the day.           We do understand what this means.        I ask my family if they realize a date is my anniversary and they do not.           You are so good about giving out the info for the various problems we encounter.           Have a good day!         Coming to your party would be great.                We should have celebrated last weekend!         Cheryl R

For some reason I want to have apple dumplings - not sure where that idea comes from. ;)

While we are celebrating, DHM, maybe we should think about having a Portland ANA group calendar, and celebrating anniversaries for all the Portland group members at our meetings. Anyone within a few months is close enough. I think noticing how much better things are going each year is a helpful reminder that life after AN is good after all.

Best wishes on your anniversary for an even better year #3.

Too funny about the pirate hat!! I kept forgetting I had it on!  The folks at airport security all said "Aaaaarrrrrrr" to me--apparently I wasn't the only pirate in Chicago recently.

I would like Chicago-style deep-dish pizza with anchovies, mushrooms and green peppers! Yum, yum, yum!  And a virgin Pina Colada.  Slurp, slurp, slurp!!

It was so great to get to know you and if I had the money for a plane ticket I would be there in e heartbeat!!  You know that.

Have a great time with your family.

Big Hugs,

Aw gee whiz- chucks…. Thanks Cheryl

Ok so far on the VIRTUAL PARTY buffet table is a keg of rum for the kayaking ice fisherman/pirate…

I am serving Pacific Northwest Smoked Salmon
•   Peet’s Coffee (Is there anyone who can run a latte Machine- Mike? Ok you can bring Starbucks coffee if you insist)
•   Various platters of chocolate (Cadbury’s too -for Pearly Whites)
•   Oregon Peaches (right off the neighbors tree)
•   Oregon Pinot Noir.  (Any one want to bring Chardonnay? Merlot?)

Hmm what else shall we serve?

Oh goodness the pot of tea is going to get cold without a cozy. Heavens. Kay- can you knit as well as our Steve- perhaps we could improvise here. Oh Steve you are coming?

I have some Dave’s Killer Bread (Uniquely Pacific Northwest)
http://www.daveskillerbread.com/
This stuff is taking off like hot cakes- here in Oregon

Pearly Whites perhaps you could bring, from the ANA office, and assortment of the “Deaf Left” “Deaf Right” buttons- so we know how best to arrange ourselves, in our respective places, at the round tables…. ;D

All right you motley crew- who else is coming and what do you want to bring?

(Pirate hats are definitely acceptable- just be forewarned that our resident red-tail hawk may swoop down and poop on it – you should see the mess under its nest of our fir tree)

Yardtick- you are Canadian. Can you bring some: (?)
•   SMARTIES http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties
•   Popcorn twists http://olddutchfoods.ca/eng/popcorn.html# (or is that uniquely a Western Canadian thing)
•   Shreddies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shreddies (I cannot get these here in the USA)
•   Tim Horton’s Donuts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Hortons
•   Hmmm what else cannot we not get down here… Peak Frean's chocolate bourbon crème biscuits (for the PBW crew) … Kraft bought them out so I am not sure if Peak Frean's still has those…

Oh and Pearly White ;D  do not freak out over the mice and spiders here out in the country- the red-tail hawk will take care of those… as the kitty. (Shh folks do not tell Phyl we had a cougar sighting and what I mean by “kitty”  ;)- being that she is such a CITY girl) Bring the bloke if you are fearful of mice- I’ll offer him Cadbury’s and Marmite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite

Laz- You are an Auzzie- can you bring some vegemite?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite

Oh core we are going to have quite a spread of food- maties.

Ok OK Who ELSE is coming – now?

Is there something in particular you want on the buffet table?

Is Tim Hortons good?        We passed by one while in Lansing MI from our motel to our daughters and never stopped as had never heard of it.     I forgot to ask her about it.     Sounds like maybe I should have checked it out.                  There is a Zingermans in Ann Arbor that have never made it to but have read about in magazines.   You can order from them on the internet.
I can bring the Iowa State fair goodies -corn dogs and funnel cakes!         Plus all kinds of food on a stick.

Today is my son's twelfth birthday. One more year and my baby is a teenager. Where has the time flown?

He has requested lasagna and cherry chocolate cobbler (a Boy Scout campout delicacy) for dinner.

I'll raise a toast to your anniversary as well. Have a great time, and let us know what your family chose for your celebration.

K

Well for starters I grew up in Canada and did not come to the USA, to live anyway, until the late 1990's. (Hubby is American- the kids dual)

So tell me do you know what Nanaimo Bars are... No?...  :o
Eh gads dear where have you been? ;) :D

This is what they are and everyone where I came from knows about these -at Christmas Parties.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanaimo_bar

Two Christmas Holiday parties ago my neighbor had to explain to me what a snicker doodle was. Turns out these are German and I had a recipe in my Joy of Cooking book all these years...

This is great as my 2nd year AN party is turning into a cross cultural pot-luck. I love it. :)

My favorite American treat I cannot refuse is DOVE chocolate... created originally by a Greek- American from Chicago.

PEROIGIES! I LOVE perogies. Best ones I ever had were at a festival  in Vegreville, Alberta. I am not sure what was more memorable the perogies or the biggest Easter Egg I had ever seen in my life. It was gianourmous!

Feast your eyes at this one

Just asked the hubby about the Nanaimo Bar - he lived in Calgary for Middle School and part of HS (& then his parents moved back to Calgary until right before our wedding for his Dad's job).  I have had plenty of Canadian dishes over the years of being in that family but haven't ever had that one.  I'll have to ask my MIL about them!  ;D  You can make Queso at home - it is VERY easy & VERY yummy!!

Donna Lynn and Kaybo,

You just GOT take the Curly Girls to Heritage Park to ride the steam train, the paddle boat, go to the candy store and buy bread at the old bakery.

And you know Calgary has Dim Sum too...

I used to go for Dim Sum at the Silver Dragon - in Calgary.

In and around Nov. there is an early event at the Jasper Park Lodge  called Christmas in November it is absolutely divine a little pricey but very worth it! They decorate to the nines and it is so beautiful there. There are sleigh rides ad skiing and ice skating and bon fires. So much food and drinks too.
I think we should have a AN retreat there anyways because it is just so beautiful!!!!
Are you two talking about the “Fairmont” Jasper Park Lodge?

We have been to Heritage Park twice - once before the girlies were born (but with all our nieces & nephews) and once with the girlies when we all went.  I have the most AMAZING pictures from there.  In fact, a couple that are in the rolling slide show (on the right of my blog) are from there - they are the ones where the girlies have on Western shirts and their hair braided since we had been to a pancake breakfast...LOVE it!

Cheryl,

By the way Tim Horton's first coffee shop opened in the mid 60's, on Ottawa St here in Hamilton, On Canada.  As a kid the donuts were great.  As an adult when I am working I drink a cup of Tim's coffee everyday.  Here in Hamilton there is a Tim Horton's Donut Shop on almost every major intersection's corner.  A favourite for the Cops to hang out in since may retired Cops buy franchises.

Today Tim Horton's donuts are not made from scratch.  They are made in a plant, partial deep fried and than baked off and dressed in the local stores.  Now I prefer to buy donuts from a bakery called Sweet Paradise.  Their donuts are the heavenly  ::).  Brings back childhood memories.

Happy Anniversary!!  I can't believe that I only saw this post today!

Anyway, what is clearly missing from this virtual smorgasboard of gastronomy is some Italian food, so I'll whip up my famous meat sauce and (with all due respect to the vegetarians) a grilled vegetable pizza with fresh mozzerella.  Oh, and a nice bottle of chianti!

I forgot I have a couple packages of Tim Tams in the freezer, left over from Targets selling of them last winter.      They are good till Nov so better be getting them ate.             I could have brought them to the symposium.    Darn!                 I would think World Market should still have the authenic ones.         Des Moines has one but I never go in there.
Also to add that I was surprised to hear about Sen Kennedy also as did not realize he had become in  a worse condition.   The media always seemed to get across how well he was doing.               My sympathy to all who had connections to him and his family.

DHM -

So glad you asked!   ;D  My "secret" ingredient is to add a couple of lamb chops to the sauce while it is cooking (along with some boney beef of some sort) and a large dollop of red wine.  I also shred some carrots, which helps it to thicken up. If I can find marrow bones, I add a few of those because they give it a wonderful depth of flavor.  It is best when cooked long and slow; and it's always better the second day...  Heck, I made myself hungry.

I am intrigued by the whole Tim-Tam thing - never had one!

TIM TAMS!!! TIM TAMS!!!!  TIM TAMS!!!!!!

Official Snack Food of the Goode Ship Princess Batty Wench!!  I have had no less than 4 forum members mail me Tim Tams,  2 of them all the way from Australia.  The Dark Chocolate Cherry ones were my faves, but I also love the Originals.  The note from Laz said they were best "eaten from the freezer" but did you know the light goes out when you close the door????  Seriously!!!!
