Title: Symposium 2009 Pictures
Post by: sgerrard on August 17, 2009, 09:49:50 am
I am going to start this off with a snap of the opening session, just to show the interior of the Drake and the size of the Grand Ballroom:

If any one has trouble uploading pictures, please PM me, and I will send you my email address. You can email me the pictures, and I will get them uploaded to photo bucket for you. I can then post them for you, or send you the links so you can post them.

I am home all day today, so let's see all those group photos!

Steve

PS: can you spot Phyl in the picture?

You did good to  see me as I could barely see myself.     Clarice and Truman is up 2 or 3 rows ahead  of me but can't see in the pic.      She was such a sweetheart to get to meet.                 Cheryl R

(ok, smack me later... :D )

great pic! thanks for sharing Cheryl/Steve! will post desilu/Ann's tonight.... or my head will roll if I don't!  BTW, anyone get the pirates at lunch?  Boy, did the dr's bee-line for our pirate table or what!?  3 docs (Dr. Wiet, Dr. Slattery and one other, I can't remember) saw us pirates at our table and came right to us! Told Dr. Wiet yesterday that next time I'm in town, he's buying lunch.. and he told me I had to do so dressed as pirate! :)  He's a scurvy scallywag... I can just feel he is!

Saving the best for last, here is a meeting of some hat owners who brought their hats.
Phyl was of course busy volunteering, introducing a workshop speaker at the time.

This is Jan, Kay, DHM, Steve, Capt Deb, and Debbi. We also have finger puppets from Capt Deb. Apparently something was funny.  ;D

Sue in Vancouver

That is weird- they were not there when I checked earlier... just Steve's text only.

Steve I will try to get mine organized and e-mailed to you later ... thanks for doing this  :) as I personally get so stumped on the "photo bucket thingy"  :-\

I miss you guys already. You know Jan I did not connect that was YOU until just now ... If I had known that was you I would have given you a big hug while there in Chicago. I had no problem focusing on speakers with my SSD and lip reading- but when we were in the ballroom or  at round tables I was missing so much of the conversation. After this symposium I am thinking I really need to get the baha.

Excellent pictures!  I think it's well-established by now that a great time was had by all at the Chicago ANA Symposium but the photos really amplify that fact for those of us who couldn't be there.  Thanks so much for taking and posting them.

Hi,

I just sent some of my photos to Steve. I tried to upload them but I was not successful.

There are too few pirate photos included - BECAUSE too few dressed as pirates.  ;) I believed Phyl and as the gullible one, I dressed in pirate gear or some combinations thereof a lot of the time due to the fact I didn't bring enough regular clothes. I must say it was tons of fun even when I was in the minority. I covet Cap't Deb's new pirate hat. She got it at a special exhibit in Chicago not in conjunction with our group.  I hope the exhibit comes through Phoenix at some point so I can see it.

Ahoy,

Wonky Head Wench Mary

Mary, You looked super as a pirate too!            Your cane was what so eye catching but not in the pirate mode but the artistic mode.            I can't wait till you do get your future website!
I very happy Steve could be the  sender of pictures since they don't seem to be able to come come from here.          Even my daughter had trouble doing my profile and Phyl was the one who got it for me.                  Mine got taken care of today as I have been too pooped to be doing all I should be.             Tomorrow we are going to the state fair (corn dogs here I come!) and know I will be tired the next day.                             Cheryl R

Love the triple profile pic.

I believe Tim's wife is Cyrilee. Lovely name for a lovely lady.

I also wanted to let Taylor know that I was touched by her story at the facial paralysis round table. You have a lot to deal with at your age and you are managing with dignity and grace. Well done.

And Cyrilee was very nice, and has a great smile which didn't seem to get captured in any of the pictures. I'm glad someone got her name.

DHM

DHM -

I'm not sure we were ever introduced - I arrived late and with all the different sessions, etc., we just never really connected.

Did you get a chance to try the BP100 demo?  We realized late Saturday evening that Steve (you know, BAHA envy Steve) never got a chance to try it  :(  I made a point to drag Lori into the exhibitor room, but totally forgot to drag Steve there.  It's a shame the exhibitors weren't there on Sunday - the BP100 is even better than the Divino.

Great pictures everyone!  It looks like you all have a great time -- sorry I couldn't be there too.

Jan - I was wondering if Lori made it to the symposium since I didn't see any pictures of her.  I'm glad you two finally got to meet in person.  It sounds like the BP100 was a hit with you.  Do you think it's worth upgrading to it and if so, do you have any idea of the cost?

Hi, Wendy, we missed you!

Lori's son was graduating from the Great Lakes Naval Academy this weekend, so she wasn't able to officially attend the symposium.  But, she did make a special trip to The Drake to see all of us - along with her son and his girlfriend, her two younger daughters, and her husband.  So yes, Kaybo and I (and lots of others) finally got to meet her  ;D

Steve looked a little worried that the three "troublemakers" were together, but none of our halos slipped  ;)

I'm not sure if it was illegal or not, because she wasn't "officially" there, but Lori did try the BP100 demo with me and we both were seriously impressed.  From the information I got from the Cochlear reps and from the speech Dr. Battista gave it sounds like the new technology will prove to be quite incredible.  I've posted more info. on the BP100 on one of Mike's posts (search on BP100 to find it).

Anyway, the Cochlear reps said that there is no "trade-in" when upgrading because my Divino is used.  This really puzzled me because as I told others at the symposium, it's not like it was up my nose or anything  ::)  It's simply sat on my head for the past 14 months.

When I asked what the BP100 will cost, I was told that I (like everyone else apparently) needed to talk to the doc who gave me my Divino.  From what I understand, it's up to the docs to decide what they'll  "let it go" for.  Needless to say, about five minutes after Dr. Battista's speech I was asking him what kind of deal he can give me  ;D

He suggested that I wait until October when he'll have the Ponto demo (as well as the BP100 demo) and we'll go from there.  I definitely want to upgrade, it's just a matter of when and how much.  And the how much will probably determine the when.

Dr. Battista did say that Cochlear will continue to "support" and "maintain" the Divino for the next five years, so we're not obsolete yet!

HI Jan,

Thanks for the info on the BP100.  I'm seeing Dr. Choe sometime in September so I'll See what he says.  Hopefully, either he'll give me a break if I really like it.  Otherwise, I'll have to wait.  Not the end of the world, I really do love my Devino. I'd just be happier with the the  upgrades the BP100 seems to have to offer.  If worse comes to worse, my insurance company will allow me to upgrade my processor in 5 years at their expense.

I'm sorry I couldn't make the symposium this year but plan to make the next one.  I really wish I could have been there to meet everyone -- it looks like a good time was had by all!

Most excellent pictures...of course since they are a record of a most excellent time, it would be difficult for them to be otherwise.

Yes, my wife's name is Cyrilee. It is difficult to remember and when only heard is often difficult to get correct. The most usual comment after a person hears her name for the first time is connected to the cheesecake lady..but as you can see, there really is no connection.

In some of the pictures I am labeled as Tim M. Not really a big deal unless there happens to actually be a Tim M somewhere associated with ANA and he ends up getting blamed for the stuff that happens around me. A goodly part of the time I'm more than happy for folks to have some confusion about my name because often they are attempting to put me on some type of 'list'. While I believe that my actions are always honorable and completely justified, various authority figures seem to think it prudent to keep track of me. I'm thinking the confusion probably arose because my screen name here (and in most other online situations) is Migoi. Migoi is my cryptozoological classification...not my last name.

As I understand it, there were some that were slightly disappointed that in person I actually appear to be more civilized than pictures of me (and I suppose my postings here) would suggest. If it had been a bit cooler I could have worn a suit and really created a discrepancy between expectation and reality.

Cyrilee and I had a great time this weekend. I was good to meet those that came. It was good to be able to access the incredible amount of resources available there.

..take care.. tim b aka tim m aka migoi aka the bearded guy sitting in the corner with a mildly confused look on his face.

So, not only did I hit the 100,000th post, I also was the one who remembered Mrs. Migoi's name. (Yes, I know she is actually Cyrilee B; however I like the way Mrs. Migoi sounds.)

I'm thinking I deserve a pink knitted hat.

Mrs. Migoi and I would second that motion for Sara deserving a knitted pink hat...of course the only work we need do is the few seconds of typing necessary to put in the second.

Small sitting ovation for Sara (who's name probably gets an 'h' slapped on it on too frequent of a basis) for getting Mrs. Migoi's name correct.

What kind of Mac do you have?

What great pics ye wenches and scallywags!! I just got home at 5:00 after 26 hours of trying--had to spend the night at the Comfort Inn which wasn't nearly as cool as the Drake.  My back is killing me and so is my head.  I'll post my pics tomorrow when I'm feeling better.  To all those who missed the bash--start thinking about Cincy in 2011!!  It is a 3 day party combined with amazingly good information on our issues.

Hugs to all,

I really want to learn how to do this myself without always relying on "the guys" (Steve and/or my hubby). I am too a MAC user now and have a different computer to when I last posted photos. I need some step-by-step instructions to photo bucket...

Can I please  ;D have help too?

No right clicking necessary with photobucket! When you put your cursor on the image on photobucket, you will get a drop down list underneath with 4 options--click on the bottom one to copy that code. It is the one that says "IMG code"  ( If it won't copy you can click on it then hold down the apple button to the left of your space bar then hit the letter c. ) This will copy the photo. To paste the code into your reply text box, place the cursor where you want it to paste and hold down the apple button then hit the letter v. The photo  will appear as code but the picture won't actually come up until you post it. (The apple button also has a square curlycue thing on it--at least it does on my mac.) When I'm posting with photobucket I usually open it in a new tab so I can go back and forth to the forum easily.

Hope this helps

Capt Deb(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee60/Captdeb_photos/pirate-smiley-12.gif)

PS  the image code needs to start with [IMG] and end with [img] to work

Sara, Plus I was the one who egged you on that you looked very nice in the pink hat and  needed to get it.      It fit your face shape very well.             I am glad there was a picture of it on you.                                   I am not thrilled over my pictures as I get a puffy face easily when tired and on the go and it is showing up too well.                I am plump but not always so much so in the face.      Will add one sometime if can get a good one.

OMG, I love the squirrel, Steve!  ;D ;D ;D  Thanks for humoring me!  :D It has been all over the news (but all you travelers may have missed it). It popped into a couple's photo on vacation and immediately became a legend -- they've been doing the morning shows and CNN did a funny piece on it today (which I was watching while I looked through here.... and so it went)! http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2009/08/_nuts_is_now_a.html

Kaybo, I totally wanted to find you before I left too, but after a few slow goodbyes I thought of my dogs home with their legs crossed and finally hightailed it out. I had been out at an air show party in the afternoon, so it was a long day for me even though I wasn't doing anything constructive like symposium sessions. Yes, Sharon, that is indeed me.

While I hate to admit it, I have put on lots of weight since my profile picture was taken and I decided to let my hair grow; I haven't worn it this long since high school.

I'm hoping to have a new boss any day now, which in addition to relieving my stress level should give me time to exercise, sleep, and get my kids and myself off this fast food diet we've resorted to in the past 6 months.  Changes are ahead.  Maybe I'll post a new profile picture then!  Wish me luck  ;D

I only asked because you are far prettier in real life than in your Forum picture.  Hope you get a new boss soon.  You don't look fat, you look quite striking.

I forgot to mention another way you might have known who I was.   I took a bad fall the evening before the symposium and the area above my upper lip looked as though I had some hideous, leprous, disgusting sore.  It was the superglue that they use in ERs now instead of stitches.  Luckily my days of excrutiating vanity are over--so much so that I forget that I have the thing until I see someone's eyes drift down while they try to suppress a slight twinge of disgust curling their upper lip.

Soon I will have to wear a band-aid to protect it from the sun.  That, too, will be lovely.  I, again, won't care much.  I will wish I didn't have it when I sing at my niece's wedding Sunday, though.

Please bear with me here…

Ok I am being a bit stubborn (ok ok a lot stubborn ::) ) here as I totally suffer from what those around me call “the do-it-yourself” syndrome. I am a very independent minded person who is always so determined to learn to do things by myself… The whole self directed vestibular therapy kick I went on, when I was out to prove I could ride a bike with no hands after months before being dependent on a walker…, to then post a photo with my old computer (which I had mastered unlike my new one here) was one of the do-it-yourself syndrome moments… but even then I got help from my husband with photobucket.

As I came to and from the Drake Hotel a porter kindly offer to take my luggage for me…. But nope I bolding insisted "I can do this myself- thanks anyway". I hate to be depended on others … and sometimes this does so getting me into a pickle when I neglect to delegate tasks… and I cannot get the job done (My back is still aching today ::) – but just mildly so)… I drive doctors, nurses (and yes my family) nuts sometimes- as I do not like to allow others to do thing for me.

Nevertheless I am so determined to nip this “photo bucket thing” in-the-bud with my new photos software and my new Mac Book (which I have far from mastered) without the assistance of my dear husband and our cherished Steve.  This I-photo software is so different from the HP photo software I previously used - as far as removing red-eye, cropping etc.

In some of my photos I have MAJOR synkenisis happening with my eye so I want to crop me out but keep the others in the photo … also some others had the synkenisis eye thing happening too and I want to crop those as I have better photos of them, to post, but do not want to excluded the others.

Sue from Vancouver said she was glad she was not there as she would not want her photo posted…

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME.  So glad I was NOT there, as I would not want MY PHOTO out there!  :o :o  However, I'm sorry I wasn't there to join in on the experience and fun that you all seem to have had.  Great photos!  Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on the award, Phyl.  You rawk, as you like to say!!

Sue in Vancouver, USA

…and I can so relate to this. For those of us with facial issues, especially with synkenisis and paralysis, we want to have some control over which photos are posted… this is why I am taking time to go through these.

I ask that you please be patient with me as I am still attempting to master photo editing (with my own MAC software) and photo-bucket… I so want to know and master this skill without having to pass this on to “the guys” (Steve and my hubby)

So as I continue to suffer from “do-it-yourself syndrome” I ask that you-all be patient as I try to get my photos posted. If you know that mine appear via Steve, at the end of the week, then I totally gave up… but I am not giving up until then… as I am SOOH determined to do this.

DHM

Jan has the most beautiful turquoisey eyes I have ever seen!  They are the color of the water in the Caribbean.  She says they are "all hers", too.

Good luck with the pics, DHM.  You can figger this out I know it!!!!!

when i had the T3 and then all the problems, I had to wear a gauze square patch on my cheek for, literally, months - I'd take a band-aide any day...in fact, I was VERY happy when I graduated to a band-aide!!  :D  I do wonder why you will have to wear a band-aide to protect it from the sun, though...can't you just wear sunscreen?  That is what I used for the remainder of the summer last year as soon as I could go (naked!) w/o the bandages!

I guess I could use sunscreen.  But even the highest level lets in some sun.

Here's why I say that.  Being fair skinned and...hmmm....a bit older, I am prone to unnattractive large freckles that some nasty people might call Age Spots.  I have one such above my upper lip, and when it shows up I look kind of like Hitler.  So every morning I put on Clinique "Almost Makeup" with #15 sunscreen, plus a dab of #30 over my Hitler freckle.  Yet, as the summer wears on, it nonetheless darkens and I wait for some neo-Nazi to salute me with a "Sig Heil!"!!  Maybe it's because I wipe my upper lip when I eat (which is more often than is good) or maybe I perspire more there.

But i sunscreen worked for you maybe it will for me too.  I was afraid when I read my ER instructions and they said that exposure to the sun will harm healing skin and make the scar bigger.

Sharon -

I don't really see myself as striking - in my mind I'm still 30 and a size 10, which is obviously not what my pictures show - but I'll take the compliment.  And the one from Capt. Deb also.  A lot of people ask me if I wear contacts, but my blue eyes are hereditary; handed down through the Meyer family for generations.

I'm so sorry about your bad fall and hope you heal soon.  I'm very familiar with the ER superglue - my son had it on his chin when he was about 2 or 3 and my daughter not wanting to feel left out had it herself near her eye a few months later.  It worked wonders for both of them.

I wish I had some suggestions on the sunscreen, but even though I should wear it, I rarely do.  My children are blessed with their father's skin (he's Assyrian) and they both tan beautifully.   I on the other hand usually get burned at least once a summer  ::)

My grandmother was a Meyer, Jan. But my eyes are hazel.

I am bemused by all of the negative comments about the pictures. It shows that we are truly our own worst critics. I was there and met most everyone, and I think you all looked great, in person and in these photos. Although I do think we all look better in person; my theory is that our faces are dynamic and photographs are static.

Remember also that we are among friends here and are unlikely to be critical of any of the photographs.

Hi All!

Willie and I just got back to NJ last night, so I have not had a chance yet to upload my pics to photobucket - however, before EOD it will be done!

I must say that the highlight of the symposium was meeting everyone - and I agree with SaraLynn that everyone looked beautiful/handsome.  I suspect that we are always our own worst critics.  And, I have decided that a perfectly symmetrical smile is over-rated and, dare I say? - boring!   ;) ;D

Stay tuned for pictures...

Ok, folks... to help make life easier.... I have "Pillaged" all photos from the symposium that folks have shared here and put them into one central location on Photobucket:

http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd186/ppearlbaxter/ANA%20Symposium%202009/?albumview=grid

94 pictures.  Once you pull up the "grid", click on the 1st pic in the top/left (I believe its me and Captn Deb). Once you click on the pic, the pic will become full screen. You can then click on the "arrow" on the right margin to move along the pictures to see each one clearly.

I need to finish "tagging" the pics and will do so over the next few days.

thought this would be helpful.

Post 'em on photo bucket. :)

If you have an account, go log in. If not, go to http://register.photobucket.com/ and set one up.

Once you are in photo bucket, just click the Upload Images and Videos button, and select your pictures.

The part that throws most people is getting the link to photo bucket into a post here on the forum. The main thing to know is that it needs to end up looking like the text in the box below when you are composing the email (this is the pic above):

Code: [Select]

For me, the easiest way is to click on the picture in photobucket, so I go to a view of just that picture. On the left is a box called "Share this image" with various forms of the link. The bottom one is the [img] style one. When I click that (single left click in this view), it says "Copied". Then I can just paste it into a post.

Getting any closer?

Steve

A symposium book would have to be one of everyones experiences.      I go to sessions that pertain to me and the NF2.       There is one lady I talked to that has been to 9 now.             I do look out for people that I know that have been to more than one and did not a see a Calif gal that saw at my first 2 and also a Texas couple.             If anyone met Hazel from Calif, she has been to the last 4 also and bet it's more than that.                     Now Capt Deb would be one to write a good book as she has such a perky personality and keeps up on what's going on well.     It's the pirate gene in her!                            You do learn in time how things are ususally run.                   This time was the most internet people and am sure it will continue that way.

Good question about the symposium date.  I just assumed it would be in August 2011, but from what Cheryl R said I see my assumption is most likely incorrect.

I'm sure at some point when the good folks at the ANA recover from this year's symposium, they'll release the dates of the next one in Cincinnati.

Cheryl - I think you and Deb and Hazel should all collaborate on that book  ;D

Donnalynn - it would be incredible if you and Jim attended in 2011  ;D

Reg -  I vaguely remember seeing your name tag, but I can't recall if I formally met you or not.  Anyway, hope to see you too in 2011.

We'll have to ask the ANA to make the ANA Forum Member ribbons in shocking pink or something so we can identify each other easier.

It was also a nice surprise to see both Dr. Friedman and Dr. Brackmann in the pics!

Thank you Mrs Ehr for founding this amazing non-profit organization... I could have not made it through the last 2 years without it ... not to mention without the people on the ANA discussion forum- here.  ;D The symposium was so well organized! What great and dedicated staff the ANA has. (And what an immense amount of organizational work to pull it off sooh smoothly.) Kudo's.

Ok this last week I:

•   Went to Chicago all by myself  ;D (fortunately Steve had the same flight back as me) and met amazing people
•   Spent a week learning how to use my MAC Book I-photo software for the 1st time
•   Spent way too much time chatting on the forum (I love you guys!  :-*)
•   Hosted a sleep over of teenage girls ::)
•   Took a van of kids to the beach not once but twice  ::) (2 hour drive each return trip)
•   And today I spent the whole day out with the family celebrating my 2 year anniversary post op... to which they topped off with a home baked
   cake.
•   Did I mention I mastered photo-bucket  ;D  (Thanks Deb & Steve  ;) )

Why am I bragging ... well...

To think 2 years ago:
* I woke up with facial palsy,
* Went temporally blind with Natsgamus, in one eye, from brain swelling
* Had CSF leaks, was in a wheel chair
* was medicated to the nine  ::)... could not poop  :-\…

Now I am medication free, riding bikes and keeping up with my kids (sort of- now one is taller than me)

KEEP MOVING FORWARD!!

I am pooped...  and I am hosting tomorrow a family at our farmhouse (which is currently VERY messy) . I will try to get the last of the Chicago trip photos out tomorrow... but time and energy pending and will not make a promise I might not be able to keep.

It is midnight PST- and my family van is going to turn into a pumpkin... and I into a mouse (oh I forgot never mention MOUSE around Pearly Whites  ;D  ;) Shhhh)

You folks are sooh awesome. Wuv ya-all!  :-*

HUGS and nighty night... don't let the bed bugs bite... (now Phyl is totally freaking out  ;) :D :-* )

I see someone has been having fun with iPhoto. Aren't Macs wonderful? I've been using one for nearly 20 years. Two years ago during my son's Civil War Day, I took pictures of each student in period garb, and then converted them to sepia tone. They turned out just fabulous. Also check out a shareware program called Graphic Converter for even more fun. I'll look up the site for you.

Also, I beg to differ that you were bragging. It looked more like a progress report to me, and we really need to put that kind of information up here so that people just out of surgery or about to go into it and scared to death can see that things do get better. I've seen a huge improvement over the last year and hope for a huge improvement this coming year too.

You also look very nice in your pictures. I know it is harder for you to see because you know what you looked like before surgery and I do not. I especially like your picture with Steve in the top post at the top of this page.

Sara

Edited to add: Oops, the picture of DHM and Steve is on the previous page . . . somewhere around the middle.

I think I like the picture of DHM and Virginia Ehr the best, not for the photography, but for what it says about the past and future of the ANA, as it approaches its 30th anniversary at the next symposium in Cincinnati. Passing the torch and moving forward.

DHM looks great in all the pics, with Deb and Jackie and Mike as well as me. One good indication of the progress is that 2 years ago DHM was not up to posting pictures of herself, and now she is posting a bunch of them. I first met her in person in late 2007, and her progress since then has been wonderful. I'm sure she is still fussing about this and that bit of asymmetry, but her face is animated and expressive now. As her description of one week indicates, she is living life to the fullest. She's back.  :)

DHM, have a great year #3. See you in September!

What great photos of everyone.  I got to meet a couple of you at the conference and kind of wish I had the photos before so I could know who was who!  Somehow those little photos on this site just don't do the trick.

I am a post gamma knife patient (possibly failed) and will find out more next month with my next MRI.  My fear all along has been the facial paralysis that seems to accompany microsurgery, but I have to say after attending the conference that that fear was greatly eased.  Yes, some have crooked smiles, but so what?  What a beautiful bunch!  Every one of you has grace and I suspect have grown quite a bit in character after having gone through what you have.   :)  It really was very reassuring, and I just want to let you know that you made an impact of encouraging me without giving a pep talk and just being yourselves.  Like Debbi said, keep smiling!

Jan, I'm from near Rochester, MN, and had my gamma knife 3-1/2 yrs ago for a small AN at Mayo Clinic by Dr. Michael Link (who is on the ANA board and was a panelist/consultant at the symposium).  As of my last MRI in March, my tumor has either started growing or I might have a second tumor along the facial nerve.  I am still hopeful microsurgery isn't in my future, but time will tell.

I'm sorry we didn't meet.  I met many people, but interestingly almost all were microsurgery patients.  I wonder what the breakdown was of GK patients, etc., attending?

I also want to add that I hope I didn't (and I didn't mean to) offend anyone with my "so what" comment about crooked smiles.  I know everyone's been through a lot and I don't want to downplay it.  (And is there a way to edit once you've posted?  I'm obviously new at this.)

Denise,

You can always edit your own posts. That is what the Modify button is for, and also the little pencil and paper icon in the lower right corner of your post. You can also delete them.

I think people will know what you meant, though, so I'm not sure you need to edit. Even facial nerve issues can't hide a real smile.  :)

Hi Denise-  I thought your post was very complimentary and not at all offensive to those of us with crooked smiles.  I came away from the conference realizing that those little bits of asymmetry, the dimpled chins and those slightly lopsided smiles  ;) are part of what makes us who we are today.  Would I have preferred to skip the facial paralysis part of this - you bet!  But, I also know that it has been a learning and growing experience for me.  And, people don't react any less favorably to my "new" smile than they did to my "old" one!  Go figure!

I don't envy you the prospect of facing a second treatment, but you sound like you have a good attitude.   I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can avoid surgery!

I know I'm not alone in this, but I didn't like the speaker.  I was so offended by how he "lost" his family (he should have been a politician and then his poor wife would have to have been a doormat and kept him around.)  I wish he was still cleaning toilets.  I would never, ever buy his book or pay to see his movie, but does anyone know what happened to the girlfriend and her baby?  Does he ever express sincere regret for what he did?  Also, someone said that in his book he calls his AN a "brain tumor"--which it technically is, but I always feel that calling it only that is mostly a plea for attention.

And no, my husband is a sweetie, but I've had countless friends & several relatives whose husbands acted like this jerk and their selfishness absolutely devastated their families' lives.   I wish them only evil.

Sharonov,

Please know that I have known both men and women who have treated their family deplorably. And yes some have gone on to remain self-righteous and egocentric causing terrible emotional harm not just to their spouse but also harm to their children on a longer term physiological basis. These perpetrators are unable to realize how selfish and inappropriate their narcissistic behavior affects others. This is often true if an adult who was raised as a spoiled child to which everything was provided and they never experienced adversity. Sadly I have experienced one too many people of this sort, on more than one occasion, in my life.

However I must tell you that one person, close to me, who followed that negative tract I have described above – changed. Not until after experiencing bankruptcy and the long and drawn out death of the second spouse who died of cancer.  That person went from wealth affluence, prestige (that came with the family inheritance), and professional recognition... to being bankrupt and alone. That person went from being always served to one who was later serving (by choice). That person transformed from a negligent and absentee parent to one who was found cuddling grandchildren, changing their diapers and folding the laundry for the adult child’s family (whom they once so neglected when that adult child was little). The person changed. They changed because they were willing to accept responsibility for their actions and stop blaming others. From there -peace and forgiveness could be established with their adult child. The constant self-edification and blaming of others, for various mishaps, finally came to an end. From there- more positive relationships established with more depth and less superficiality.

What the guest speaker wrote and spoke about was that it took loosing all material wealth and status, respect from family iced on top with the diagnoses of a brain tumor that forced him to stop in his path of destructive behavior. By being more accepting (taking on the job of being a barista at Starbucks being the first step- even if it came by circumstance) this speaker/author was able to cross over the line and walk a mile in the shoes of another person who was NOT always served (or doted on by others) but actually served others.  He was also able to break through his prejudice of women’s capabilities and accept people of a color or culture- different than his own. (I think Crystal & Chester, mentioned in his book, were “called” to be his patient teachers)

This is often why in the USA “community service” is encouraged. Community service is not as a punishment (as in other countries I have experienced) but an “educational opportunity” for youth to grow – as part of their school education. The opportunity for my own children to serve meals to homeless at a shelter, as a part of their education, is something I was personally deprived of. Myself and other parents who encourage the community service component of education want to raise children who have understanding and compassion for others.  Also for  our children to know when they are “called” to serve and when it is time to exhibit selfless behavior and step-up-to-the-plate when asked to do so- and not begrudgingly but willingly. I am pleased to see more and more corporations now actually encourage community employee volunteer hours to which each hour their employee volunteers, at a non-profit, they will also send $10 hour to that non-profit organization.

We recently had a community in Oregon devastated by flooding- not even the high school could be used for shelter, as it too was flooded- as was their local food bank. It spoke volumes to those children when many corporate men and women took the day off of work, drove to a community that was not their own, and helped families not just replace floors in houses but used their professional expertise to help those families, who are less educated, to sit down with them and help them fill out FEMA forms ( work by the reims). That not just spoke volumes to the families of that town but to corporate employee volunteer’s own children- as their parent took time off to model community service.

Here are a couple of random articles to share

I must admit when I read the 1st few chapters of this book I wanted to scream and put it down.  ;D Nevertheless because of the reviews I was aware that I needed to “keep reading” to understand it more.  This is a man, unlike so many others  (men or women) who acted inappropriately, who is actually willing to admit that. He is regretful that he has hurt others and wants to change. He wants to serve others, willingly, and be a better person so he can be there for not only his now adult children but also his youngest child. What I have no doubt about with this author, (who is too -similar to the person I mentioned above who also lost it all in divorce, bankruptcy, death of 2nd spouse) -he will be a very supportive and involved grandfather. He may also have broken a family pattern here where the affluent snub the underprivileged- and may now provide a better role model for parental involvement- now that, post middle aged mid life crises  ;) , he chose to grow up.

In the corporate world I witness one too many parents who are much more interested in climbing the corporate ladder -than spending QUALITY time with their own children.  I also witnessed this in my former years as a classroom teacher. When summer opportunities arise - they’d rather chose to send their kids off to expensive summer residential camps than spend the quality time with their kids. I see these kids with: all the latest and greatest labeled clothing, a myriad of electronic toys... but what they are truly starving for is parental attention. Know this is not just a problem with corporate fathers – but more so now with the corporate and/or executive mothers also.

I personally like that he explains a corporate model, discussing “egalitarianism” (although that word is not used specifically in the book) - as this author IS going to reach the corporate/ executive positioned readers- the ones who I feel that need to read this book the most. More specifically those who snub those who they feel are beneath them.

Please see this New York Times article and view the video
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/13/garden/13gill.html?_r=1

Yes no doubt there is going to be royalties that come in from: his book, his public speaking venues and yes  :-\ probably even the movie too. But I am confident that his money will no longer be spent on buying exorbitantly priced bottles of Champaign to impress his superficial friends (or even sincere friends) but will most likely be used to help non-profit societies that are interested in helping people who need resources. He has moved away from buying “stuff” as he now knows, from personal experience, that materialism does not buy happiness.

There were many professionals in the audience listening to Michael- both patients and medical practioners. As I think of the many that possibly are spending too much time on their careers and jobs that pay for their materialistic possessions – it is my hope that Michael’s talk may have encouraged them to think less about their “stuff”  (and prestige) and more about community service and spending time with their own families and friends.

Oregon State, where I currently reside has now the highest number of homeless families in the nation. We did a family tent camping trip to some beurtulful State Parks, this summer, however the experience turned out different than I planned (or from previous years). We witnessed one too many homeless families going campground to campground to get them through the summer. Domestic issues were heard through the tent wall that you would not hope for on a family vacation. At first I wanted to shelter my kids from this but they did come home very appreciate of what they do have.

Here is an article on this homeless issue- here in the Silicon Forest (which was once a booming economy)
http://www.ktvz.com/global/story.asp?S=10720375
As I walked the Magnificent Mile outside the Drake Hotel I notice "help wanted" signs. You are just not seeing those near our Sax Fifth Avenue in Portland- as I once did during the economic boom times.

I know one too many families that have purchased way too much stuff on credit. I have actually watched families, who are high tech industry corporate employees (yes even some from Nike so not all high tech), lose their homes. ... And pull their children out of private school mid-year. It is devastating for the kids. One too many people are only one paycheck away to homelessness if they are laid off –and their company does not offer a severance package. Fellow parents I knew who were into the “I owe I owe- it is off to work I go” mode as they were trying to pay off the “stuff” they bought for their kids.  Yet really what the kids wanted was their attention. Often the stuff is bought out of guilt of not being able to spend time with the kids. The cycle can be a downward spiral...

These issues I mentioned are heavy weighty issues.  :( What I like about Michaels’ book is he has a witty  :D writing style that makes this book a good easy read on a weekend.  He knows how to speak the language of the affluent and it is my hope that he will reach that audience- specifically. The ones who need to cross the bar and have more empathy and understanding for those who are socio-economically different than themselves. His book makes people reflect.

This author has spoken to corporate audiences and others.

Here is a sample of his talk to Google (he is more relaxed here- no neck tie!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6bhkNJOsrs

His honesty and sincerity in the above video is compelling. You will note that when he is out west, not wearing his tie and jacket, he is much more relaxed. His talk for us at the symposium was shortened, as we had to stay “on time”. People had to check out of the Drake and catch rides to the airport (with a storm looming). Google was a smaller more intimate audience- ours was  huge in a decadent hotel (probably bring back many memories of his corporate advertising days alongside the stangling tie and suit jacket her wore...  ;) )

I think that for Michael to speak with us who have been treated, specifically, and to witness facial palsy & synkenisis, people with walkers and canes probably shook him a little and it may have been frightening for him.

We were a tough audience to face- specifically for a “wait and watcher”.  I think that for any wait and watcher it would be difficult to speak- specifically with us who have post op complications.  The symposium experience was probably informative to them but also at the same time terrifying. I witnessed Mike take the time to speak with our youngest AN patient, at the symposium, and encourage her to write her thoughts down and to keep moving forward. Different than other celebrities I have seen, who just ACT and say the right thing, - Michael was truly being sincere to her.

I think it took a lot of courage for this author to speak to us. He did this against the advise of his publisher. He wanted to be there for us.

He once pre-judged people BEFORE he crossed the barista bar. Please do not prejudge him and his character. I believe he is a changed man who is willing to publicly admit his mistakes. I ask you too to cross the barista bar and just read his book. (My library had many copies but there was a hold wait list.) It has much more depth and meaning to it -than you actually might think.

He may not have been the model father (and certainly not husband) but I think given a second chance he is going to make an awesome grandfather (and Dad to his very young son- who he had later in life.)

Please do not judge him in haste- give him a second chance.

I am not here to judge fellow AN patients but to try to walk a mile in their shoes and be here to support them.  Personally I think Mike would be an awesome person to have in a support group because of his life experience, and yes even the negative ones, having given him tremendous empathy and understanding for others. I would also let him know it is OK not to wear a tie. Our support group has people from all walks of life: some related to doctors and some who had to jump the Medicare hoops to get assistance and have no supportive family close. One even had to move in with an aging parent as the house had to be sold to cover the medical expenses.  And one special member knits hats for others and adamantly refuses to wear a tie- even in the ballroom at the Drake.  ::) ;) :-*  I know our own group would welcome this speaker (a fellow AN patient) in- with open arms. That is what we are here to do- offer support and not judge past lives but to assist fellow patients to move forward in their Acoustic Neuroma Journey. If you scroll down on the ANA home page understand that we are found under the “support group” section.

The guest speaker is not “one of them”- he is “one of us”-  our wonderful diverse and accepting support group of acoustic neuroma patients. I will not pre-judge him. I am going to offer him huggles (I learned this skill from Pearly Whites  ;D ) and encourage him to “keep moving forward”. I hope you can be encouraging too.

Peace, forgiveness... and ONLY goodness (I wish NO evil!)

Daisy Head Mazy :)

DHM .....

I read Sharonov's post earlier and was so upset I could not formulate a kind answer ...... you did it beautifully!  I can only add that I think Michael Gates had a life-changing experience when he "lost it all" and is truly a repentant man.  He has made (is making) his amends and as human beings we all deserve that right of forgiveness and making amends.

Thanks for understanding the value of all human life!

Very, very, very well said DHM! You have truly put a lot of thought into your response and quite frankly I was very encouraged for man/woman kind after reading your post. Life is so much more than material things, and no I haven't read Michael's book yet.

I, like Clarice, did really not know how to respond to Sharon's post...as always, I can see BOTH sides.  There were some questions that I would have liked to address (the baby and mother, did he compensate Crystal after he obviously got back on the big track with his book/movie) and so I am choosing to read the book in hopes that some of my questions are addressed/answered.  I think that it is OK to doubt a bit when someone makes such a big "turn around" change and is so public about it...BUT, as with anything else, it is not MY place to judge that person.  I can CHOOSE to be happy for him that he has changed & is a better person (EX: better father/grandfather) as DHM pointed out so well...let's hope that that is the case.  I know that if I had gone thru something like that, I would hope that my friends, acquaintances and the people I share my story with take my message the way I am trying to present it.  I don't know if all that makes sense....one thing that I hadn't thought about that I think was a VERY good point that DHM brought up was how this was probably a VERY hard thing for him to do.  Being in W&W and living your life like nothing is really wrong is one thing, but being in a roomful of people that have NOTICEABLE side effects from the treatment of this tumor are TWO very different things.  Heck, it was different for me and I would say that I am VERY WELL ADJUSTED to all my stuff, but to think, "WOW! I could be left like this?" - he did a very commendable job!
Sharon~This in no way is any kind of rebuttal to you - everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but just another side and some stuff to think about...

I can see both sides of this "argument" also.

I read the book; I liked the book.  I thought it had a lot of valuable lessons - one of them being that a selfish self-centered man (could have equally been a woman) learned that there were more important things in life than his sense of entitlement.

The part of all this that I find most interesting is that Michael's AN was a very, very small part of the story.  In fact, he hardly talked about it at all in his book - compared to the other things he did talk about.  I finished the book never knowing what he did about his AN.  Then someone on the Forum told me that he was watch & wait.

well said DHM
I myself have been the recipent of abuse.  Even after all this man put me thru I informed the crown that jail would not help him. what he needed is medical intervention. My family wanted him punished. I forgave him and moved on with my life.  To err is human to forgive is divine. I also keep this little saying close  by me.
Forginess is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. It is a power that breaks the chain of bitterness and the shackles of selfeshness.
I do not hide what I went thru. Nor am I amshaned.

Thanks for your long reply, DHM.  It does make me look at things from a broader angle, and I do hope that Michael Gates truly learned something and that his (brief?) sojourn cleaning toilets was not a segue into another type of workaholic life.  Guess I do really need to read the book.  I just focused on the incredible devastation he caused his family by having the affair (and obviously failing even to use birth control).

A year ago my niece got a phone call--a phone call!--from her husband saying that he didn't want to be married any more.  They had made reservations at a nice restaurant for their 25th wedding anniversary.  He took the girlfriend.   My cousin got a phone call from her husband's girlfriend saying that she was pregnant and why didn't she let him go.  My cousin took the husband back, who subsequently fathered another child with the same girlfriend.    My cousin kept this miserable creep but has developed an intractable digestive problem that has stayed with her for years.  These are two of the perhaps 20 stories in my memory bank, all involving relatives or close friends.  Hence my dislike of that particular aspect of Michael.

But anyone can change, and it seems from what you say that the main focus of his book is that he has done so.    But I definitely need to read the book, because I'm thinking that if he says he regrets the affair it would hurt the girlfriend (whom he probably told that his wife was cold, didn't understand him, never wanted sex, etc.)  and if he has no regrets then his ex-wife and older children would be hurt.   I'd be interested in knowing how he handles this.

If it's true that he has gone through such a dramatic change in outlook and is using his inner change to influence others to do the same,  then this is a good thing.

Maybe I can get the book on Paperback Swap.  For those of you who don't know about this website, if you have a stash of pre-read books at home, you can list them on Paperbackswap.com.  If somebody orders them, you get a credit and can order one that is listed on the site (there are thousands.)  The only money involved is postage.

Interesting topic regarding the speaker Michael Gates.
Almost feel like I don't even need to read the book!
He sounds like a changed, courageous and now empathetic man.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, DHM and Sharonv.
HIJACK-
I'm blessed in my life, in that I don't know of any men like this. Must have been my sheltered  catholic upbringing  ??? I really DON"T have anything to complain about in the man/hubby category!
(Okay, so he doesn't always pick up after himself, and he does NOT like doing dishes, but his good qualities definitely outweigh these minuscule drawbacks.) Funny thing though, I came downstairs today and he had made coffee and was emptying the dishwasher~ AND organizing the dishes as he was emptying in the cupboards! So you never know :)
Peace,
Maureen

Now that this "good morning" of Saturday is over and we are almost noon PST  ;D ....I have More photos to add here now that I have some time this long weekend to breath...to share with the (er hum) high jackers  ;D adourned in their knitted hats

These are photos I took on my walk of the magnificent mile… in Chicago

The first set if of the American Girl store... that I took photos for my youngest child to see- specifically... I also wanted to share with the 3 curly girls. I did not buy anything there and only came home with photos. When I first got their catalogues in the mail years ago (NOT at my request to be on their mailing list  :-\  ???) I was appalled at the prices and that the price of the doll stroller was up there with a real child's stroller... and I was thinking how money would be better spent elsewhere (in my family anyway)

Nevertheless this last year my child and I were studying American History - in particular The Great Depression. Out of the library we got this great age-appropriate series (Historical fiction) about Kit Kittredge - published through American Girl. SO much of it was very relevant to what is happening today with the economy. More so as my daughter watched her school buddy's parents loose their jobs and later their home- here in Oregon). From there we watched the DVD Charissa Stands Strong- a great learning resource about school bullying for 4th grade age (or age close to). Since our exposure to American Girl - my child worked hard doing chores and saved up for an American Girl doll … She plays with it for hours… and sometimes a different buddy comes over with her doll. We do not buy the doll clothes in the catalogue but she has resourcefully been sewing clothes for her doll from my fabric remnant bin… and I buy her thread, Velcro etc instead. She has become interested in design since... and the doll is a great learning tool.  8)

I also bought the learning guide that is much like walking though a museum (of great depression era stuff) put out by American Girl… so know that this is not just a doll store.
Welcome to Kit's World, 1934 : Growing Up During America's Great Depression
http://www.amazon.com/Welcome-Kits-World-1934-Depression/dp/158485359X
(Just call me Marian the Librarian I am always going to share book links…)

So here are the American Girl store photos I took for my daughter …and to share with some of my other ANA buddy Mom’s (and Dad’s). It was cool to see the head-quarters. I am not sure if other fellow ANA buddy parents noticed this but there were young girls everywhere, walking the street (with their parents) and holding their doll while sightseeing. Some dolls brand new and some rather tattered and looking well loved …as they adventured out with their girl. I like that the dolls come in many races, creeds and colors. Although there were times when I wish I had brought the family to Chicago… I truly loved my Mom’s weekend off and some time (just for me) to be with my ANA buddies. ;D

More Chicago street scenes etc to come…

Michael Gates Gill- Thank you for coming to Chicago!!!

Mike,

I meant to post these photos earlier with the original batch ... only now had time

I know that took much courage on your part to talk to our huge audience and you did not have time on your side to go into as much depth as you did when you spoke at to the audience when you were at Google- being that we had to all rush off to hotel check out, catch taxis, planes etc. It is my hope that you will come with us to Cincinnati in 2011 to be a participant and glean lots of information and great resources that will assist you with your wellness and AN “tuma” journey. … And maybe… Just maybe you will allow some of us to treat you to a latte 8)

I have posted some photos of you here  â€“to share with you and my supportive ANA buddies- here on the forum.

Mike- know that you have people, from all walks of life, to talk to here on the ANA discussion forum. You are a creative writer and I just suggest you come with a great anonymous alias (as many do), and just reach out to us for help, as you need it.… Know that there are MANY here who are willing to help out.

Thanks for the hugs at the Drake and for signing all our books.  I know a few people wanted to come to the book signing- but it took place so close to the hotel check out time, flight departures...

Speaking of "planes to catch" I listened to this folk song today on my old record player while sipping a latte ... and thought it fit in with your talk.

 Sharanov,

I couldnt agree with you more.  Seems like he is trying to become a millionaire again with his book and movie.   My husband and I had talked to another couple whom were truly inspirational.  Wont go into it right now but we too felt he was the wrong one for an inspirational speaker.  He is a loser who threw his life away, (wife and job) and I feel no sympathy for him.  I feel sorry for the girlfriend and her baby that fell into this losers trap.  It didn't seem like hes changed to me either.  If he had the least inkling of changing he would have given some proceeds of his book to charity, etc.

Thanks for the pictures of Michael also, I was sorry I didn't get to see him - I was really looking forward to that, but maybe he will be at the next syposium and I can meet him then.

People, people, people.  He's just a man - nothing more.  He's made mistakes - like all of us.

Lacking another "famous" person with an AN, who else was the ANA going to get to be their keynote speaker??

The only thing I regret about their choice of Mr. Gill is that his acoustic neuroma played a very tiny role in his book.  I liked the book; well-written with a lot of life lessons.  But was it focused on acoustic neuromas and how his life was affected by one?   Definitely NOT.

Humor can be healing if used appropriately

My intent here is just to make you giggle- at least a little

 ;)  :D

Nope Mike did NOT go into politics but served others coffee and wrote about his reflections (when back home to his sparse apartment)… on how the humbling experiences were good for him.

It was my understanding that the guest presenters came to the symposium at their own expense (I know the support group leaders did)… at least that is what I thought I heard (Disclaimer- I am hearing impaired  :-\ ;) ).
Please know that some people who contribute financially to the ANA do not want their names published… and donate anonymously.

I do not pry into people’s finances or expense accounts but do know that for some to just get to the symposium was a financial sacrifice that they still thought well was worth making … be it patients or people who have a profession of trying to help AN patients.

I know one person who no longer has their employee health benefit package and chose not to go to the symposium as they needed to put funds aside for hearing restoration medical treatment and facial synkenisis help.

Some are more financially secure and the symposium was a nice vacation… for other it was a necessity of information gathering and networking. We come from all walks of life… Life styles, life experiences, life mistakes etc. Know that one who drives a BMW and wears an Armani suit could actually be terribly in debt… they just look wealthy and affluent… but may not know how they are going to get the grocery bill paid for…

(I am thinking of many people here in Oregon who have Hummers, sitting dormant in their garage, that they are still making payments on… they cannot afford the gas… nor even sell the thing if they tried (I think of the old Hummer dealership lot, on my commute, that is now a Prius lot...)

We cannot make any assumptions here about book proceeds etc…

I am so thankful to all the people that attended the symposium and gave of themselves- whether it was a presenter …or fellow ANA patients who let me try out their baha (one wonderful person even shared the I-pod connection to it  :-* )

All had a story of healing and success they wanted to share. What a great symposium it was – for me! :)

No evil intentions… only good. Support not judgment, is here for ALL acoustic neuroma patients that need it.

HUGS

OK, I just finished "How Starbucks Changed My Life" and I will take back most of my previous unkind words about Mr. Gates.  He does acknowledge the pain he caused his children and does not gloss over this.  But I'm only taking back "most" because he never says two words about his wife, only that she maybe could have lived with an affair but not with one that produced a child.  After that she disappears from the book.  He implies that for her it was no big deal since she has family money anyway and besides they rarely had sex.  He says that the mistress, who is a strong and well-educated woman, dumped him.

Also, he does refer to his tumor several times--he doesn't dwell on it, because this wasn't a book about his tumor--but does mention going through many of the emotions that those of us fellow sufferers share as well as the inconvenience of diminished hearing.  I don't object to his calling it a brain tumor after the first mention of acoustic neuroma, because nobody knows what an AN is and it IS technically a brain tumor.  So I take back anything I said about his glossing over the tumor and making it sound more dramatic than it is.

If anything, the hero in the book is Starbucks!  Wow, this is product placement to the thousanth power!  Wonder if they're paying him anything.  They come out as the most wonderful place in the world.  If I liked their coffee I'd go out and buy a cup right now (I prefer Dunkin Donuts.  No class here.)

OK, I just finished "How Starbucks Changed My Life" and I will take back most of my previous unkind words about Mr. Gates.

WAY to go!

BIG hugs.

Starbucks is also showing other areas of social responsibility – even environmental

Here is an article about coffee grounds for compost
http://freebies.about.com/cs/free/l/blstarbucks.htm

Here is Starbucks official website on compost and other issues
http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost.asp

I first heard about this through word-of-mouth from participants in this community garden program who presented at a community improvement public forum- I attended (done by the city council)
http://www.jcornett.com/fggardens/index.htm

The community garden has a partnership with this non-profit society that helps socio economically disadvantaged women
http://www.adelantemujeres.org/about.html

(Apparently one volunteer goes  to various Starbucks to collect old grinds regularly- for the compost)

I think it is great that Starbuck’s part time employees receive benefits- and that many, as Michael described, are going back to school and furthering their education and prospects.

No Michael did not dwell too much on his failed relationships with the women he has been with -but more focused on his kids and their future outlook.

I like the emphasis that was placed on employers who create an atmosphere of respect, responsibility and yes even egalitarianism. Know that when Michael speaks, as he indicated in the Google You-tube video, that he does NOT represent Starbucks ...he just writes about his experiences with it.

There is an amazing “Keep moving forward” spirit in his book- that us AN tuma journeyers can ALL benefit from.

There are some other corporate executives who I would SOOH like to have experience with his book… I would like to bring him back west to the Silicon Forest to speak- but will be careful to allow him the time he needs to go more into depth.

Personally I would love to have sat down and had a latte with Mike and talked more about his book with him… “But there were planes to catch …and bills to pay” (hotel check out  ;) )

I am glad you took the time and effort to read it.

I had a pumpkin spice latte today. I see the people on the other side of the barista bar so differently now. I notice that the donations basket of “back to school supplies for needy kids” was chocker blocked full of NEW markers, pencils, dividers etc. The spirit in the one Starbucks I went into today was such a cheerful one. ½ of the employees there have now read the book- since I brought it to their attention just last fall.

The facial palsy/synkenisis and the new Singled sides deafness I acquired, 2 years ago, has forced me to look at a “vocational change” in my mid-life… on that regard I found his book very inspiring. Mike can work around an espresso machine and can hear the orders- I have hyperacusis and have to wear an earplug at Starbucks. Fortunately the baristas are getting to know my routine order.  Today the barista said “short caramel latte again for you today or would you like the seasonal pumpkin spice that is back?

No this is about much more than failed relationships and an acoustic neuroma tumor… it is about respecting life (yours and others), new beginnings and moving forward.

I hope others will read the book too.

You know up until I read this I reply-I thought he never mentioned the words  "Acoustic Neuroma", just "brain tumor", in the book... and you are right he does mention it in his dialogue with Dr. Lalwani...  :-[ :-\  I am embarassed as I asked Mike to see if the AN tuma could get more mention in the film- since it was not mentioned in the book ... as to bring more awareness to it. There IS mention in the book- after all.  :) Gee big slip up in my reading comprehension on that chapter - the 1st time. Should I just blame my oversight on Post Treatment "WONKY Head" and I that  intially read it within the 1st year of my recovery?  ;)

Ok I am reading it again ... since I just sent a handful of signed copies off to friends and family... with hopes to have a book discussion. I wonder what else I missed the 1st read? :-\

DMH, I might also have missed some items as I did alot of speed reading, but I focused in whenever he talked about his "tuma"!

I, too, have always respected Starbucks for the way they treat their employees with regard to health insurance, but I had no idea that they also paid for education and were as community conscious as you and this book say.  It's nice to know that all the profits for those high priced drinks aren't just going into the pockets of CEO's & their ilk.  Someday I may even try that super chocolatey drink they have (I forget the name), but first I have to lose 10 pounds!  :o

And I'll probably see the movie when it comes out and add to his return to wealth.

This post has absolutely no bearing on Michael Gill Gates or his book (or the ANA symposium, for that matter) and I've no opinion on the generosity of the Starbucks chain toward their employees, although I recall reading that they've recently had to close a lot of their stores (no surprise in this economy) and have experienced ongoing labor disputes.  It seems as if those on both the political left and right have grievances with Starbucks on some issue or other, which basically neutralizes most of the criticisms.  However, I'm with you, Sharon: I much prefer Dunkin' Donuts coffee to that of the overpriced Starbucks brand.  Dunkin' Donuts shops may not have the cachet Starbucks has developed but then, I've always felt more comfortable in an old-fashioned diner than some overpriced, pretentious restaurant.  I enjoy my simple pleasures. and especially, a good cup of coffee, no matter the surroundings.  Dunkin' Donuts does it for me.  Starbucks may have it's charms and be good to it's employees but I'll pass, thanks.  Dunkin' Donut's income and profits are far above the Starbucks chain, for what that may be worth.  Frankly, I don't consider choosing the more utilitarian Dunkin' Donuts for my coffee over the chic Starbucks as having no class - just different tastes than some other folks.  That's one thing I love about the free market - we have choices.  May it always be that way.

Now, lets all have a cup of coffee and sing 'The Java Jive'   (younger folks can look it up).

ANA discussion forum world records
•   I know this is a popular posted thread being that it has now had, to date, 3079 “reads”.
•   Ok it is NOT way up there with the “good morning” posted thread (106540 reads to date- those crazy pirates!!) … nevertheless it is up there in posted thread about Dr. B (3094 reads to date) – in readership

The symposium is still staying with me and was definitely a highlight of the 2009 year- for me  :). I met so many amazing and inspiring people. I am still looking at all the photos and now placing faces to names.

Thanks Steve for creating this post.   :) I am looking forward to you also attending the support group leaders meeting in Cincinnati in 2011- now that you are one of the many cherished volunteers, that are SOOOH needed, who have stepped-up-to-the plate in support group leadership.

We even got a little side tracked on this thread.... talking about Michael Gate Gill and his book contents- nevertheless it was all relevant to what we experienced at the symposium… alongside the photos that others have shared. We all came away with such different perspectives... worth sharing with each other.

I talked a little (ok a lot) about the many people in Oregon who are being so affected by the economy with job loss… to which they also loose their medical insurance. There were some who wanted to come to the symposium but did not have the resources to do so. Here is a post that I made this morning that ties in with that… if anyone cares to read it.

http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=10526.15

….Speaking of ANA discussion forum world records
Leaprytwins (aka “Jan”) who many of you met at the symposium, and is in the above photos, to date has 6126 posts. Yup I do believe she holds THE world record for 2009- to date!!!

This Friday is Jan’s birthday and I wanted to announce that to the entire ANA discussion forum world!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
I wonder what sort of world record she will hold for the most PM's in her inbox that day?  ;) :D

Hey DHM - thanks for the alert about Jan's BD - that is truly a momentous occasion and I plan to celebrate accordingly!  I am headed to Seattle that day, so plan to eat some seafood that night and raise a glass to Jan.
