Title: Symposium Arrivals into Chicago - dinner Thurs Aug 13
Post by: ppearl214 on August 04, 2009, 09:33:24 am
Pizza Thurs night has been discussed in the Symposium thread.  If we can choose a place that offers other items than pizza (ie: pasta, etc), then, I'm game (can't eat pizza due to dietary issues... and no, not my diet, but medical reasons).

Jan, ideas for Italian that offers both (pizza and pasta)?  My flight is due in mid afternoon (barring flight delays), so I'm game.  Will start the list here (as I do with the NE Brunch list... please add to it as necessary).

time:  Thurs, Aug 13 (time, TBD)
Location: Italian place in Chicago

Just an idea . . . I know that Chicago's Hard Rock Cafe is right down from the hotel where I am staying, and half a mile or so south of the Drake. My girls want to go there. I've never been, would it be too loud for a gathering? Is the menu varied?

If it's not a good idea for Thursday the girls and I can go another time. Just thought I would throw out the idea.

We went to the Chicago Hard Rock a very long time ago.       Was ok.     Any place is going to be noisy unfortunately.       We went to the Philly one 2 years ago and was really noisy.                          The Drake Hotel has a list of restaurants within walking distance that I read recently.     The Ginos was on there.   I was thinking of seeing if they had a website.             So don't know what will work out best.       I don't have time to check it now.                                 Cheryl R

I am not FOR SURE yet what we are doing on Thursday night...PROBABLY get together but I haven't discussed it with Dave yet.  This is kind of our big trip to get away without the kids so he may want to go out to a really nice, romantic dinner for two!!  However, if we were to go with the group, Hard Rock would really not be my first choice...you've seen one, you've seen them all in my book and the food is not that great and very overpriced...just my opinion though!

I did Google Ginos and of course found several but all seemed to have pasta and sandwiches besides the pizza.            I need to look at Drakes site to see what the address was of the one near them.              Kate B or Jan might know too.
Could meet in lobby at a time if need be and decide from there.          I have no idea what is best there.

Spoke to Captn Deb, who should be posting here soon...... she noted to me about possible Pirate Museum on that Thursday and that its free admission between 5p-9p? I need that confirmed... so, for those that sail the PBW (meaning ALL of you.....)... Pirate Museum and dinner... except, of course, Kaybo, who's making a romantic eve for 2 instead of 20! ;)   :-*

...Still working on flight details which I hope to firm tomorrow. If I get my choice "non-stop" flight I should arrive to the airport around 3:30 then time to unwind at the hotel (Portland OR to Chicago is a long one and I tend to have a little exhaustion and wonky head after flying long trips)

I would love to be with the group for supper... similar to Pearly Whites I have dietary issues (low salt, NO MSG,  and no tomatoes which basically nicks spaghettti and pizza for me)

So what is the attire for the evening- knitted hats and pirate socks?  ;)

Pearly girl- once I have flights confirmed I will send you a PM

Dang, but my plane gets in at 10:30 in the AM!!!!  Need to meet up with someone who wants to do Navy Pier, or the Pirate Exhibit at the Field Museum early.  I like the idea of doing it free at 5:00 Thurs and then dinner.     If I can't find someone to go to pirate exhibit on Thurs, I may cut out the Sun morning lecture if the museum's open. Will get there one way or another--really easy to find from the Drake--just a staight shot down Lakeshore Drive.

Hopefully we will be  to Chicago for supper Thurs.         Cheryl/Mark                          Sun I have no clue about what we will be doing.               I have a feeling that we will not be doing much sightseeing but I am not giving up my vist either then or on Mon to Woodfield Mall and a LL Bean store.                         Some of this trip did not end up like I was hoping since will be gone the extra days before it.                                     Cheryl R

I don't know where I got it in my head that the Field Museum was free on thurs!  I just checked the website and it is free every second Monday. DUUUUUHHH!  Entry to the Pirate exhibit is $23 but I am willing to pay that--it is supposed to be really cool.  I have pi$$ed away $23 a few times in my life, believe me!  This time it will be worth it!!  Let me know who is up for it pre-dinner on Thurs.

Hi Phyl,

Rosebuds is Italian and it is on Rush Street.  Gino's East, although primarily deep dish pizza, has other food on its menu too! Maggianos serves huge portions of pasta (share these)
I'll think some more and if I come up with others, I will get back to the thread:-)

Are these within walk from the Drake distance?                 The Drake has a list of restaurants on its website too and the addesses of them and how far they are.                      I am not a late night supper person but still want to see everyone.                    I will be back in my normal time zone and know others will be adjusting.                                 Cheryl

The museum is in with other museums in an area by the lake and am not sure if walkable easily from downtown.        I would consider it more of a driving destination myself but has been a while since we were there.              So don't think there are restaurants right by it.                                          Cheryl R

There's a Lou Malnati's within walking distance of the Field Museum.  It has pizza, pasta, salads, etc.   There are also several tapas restaurants, a New York Deli restaurant, several excellent Thai places, and an old neighborhood Italian Trattoria that's relatively cheap (for Chicago) that's a couple of blocks farther.

The Gino's East downtown is on Superior St., east of Michigan.  It has pizza that some consider to be the best in Chicago; it also has salads, sandwiches & pasta, stromboli and many other choices.  Here's the link to the menu:  http://featuredfoods.com/a-store/gino_p3a.pdf    It's very easy walking distance from the Drake.  Sorry, I keep saying walking distance without factoring in people who may have mobility issues--the Lou Malnati's would be about 3/4 of a mile from the Field and Gino's East is about half a mile from the Drake.  Trattoria Caterina is a good mile.  It is a quiet place, with pizza, pasta and Italian dinner items like chicken vesuvio.

I would suggest that you make a tentative reservation wherever you're going, if you decide on Thursday.

I look forward to giving all who have listened to me moan about my headaches amongst other things the last 5 years a big hug.
I will be arriving fully botoxed.  :) My appt with Dr. Choi is on Friday.

I will be staying overnight on Sat and leaving Sunday.  My hubby will be arriving as well but am not sure if we will join the
group for dinner Sat night.  It's rare we get an evening out without my 2 young sons.

See you all soon.

Sara

I suggested restaurants closer to the Drake.  The Field Museum is an part of an Area called Museum Campus and is quite a hike...like over the river and through the woods (ergh...streets) of Chicago.

All of the ones mentioned are less than a mile of the Drake.

In terms of affordability, it would be Ginos or Maggianos... Rosebuds is more in the 15-25 per meal range.

Hey I would be just thrilled if Jackie Diels came for our Thursday informal dinner! Who can put the bug-in-her-ear so she will want to join us?  ;D

I personally need to thank her profusely for putting me in contact with my neuromuscular facial retraining therapist- Wanda Crook. (Wanda and Dr Ng, my Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmologist, have been the shining lights in this post op recovery journey when other medical practioners said little could be done or outright refused to help me. Because of these two - we are hopefully going to have a Portland Oregon neuroma muscular facial re-education clinic up and running at OHSU in the next few months here. Finally!!) Jackie was a catalyst there…

Back on thread here (sorry tangent overcame me)….

I am confident some lurkers will come forward to join us for Thursday’s supper and we will have at least 15 to book our own room for dinner… (And a taxi can be ordered for those who are not up to walking from the hotel to the restaurant.) We still have a few days to pull this together… I am confident it WILL come together.

Ok you lurkers it is time to come out now… Who else is joining us for Thursday’s supper?
 ;D

Do we need to get advance tickets to the Pirate exhibit? If so, have we determined a time?

Plus my husband wasn't on the list either as he will be with me for some events but not at the actual symposium.  I will pay extra for him to come to the banquet though.                    He gets to sightsee Sat.
You can buy your tickets ahead online if know you are going to the museum for sure.      Otherwise just stand in line there at the ticket counter.
Jackie is very friendly but think it would be hard at a restaurant for us all to hear her talk.         Alot of what she will tell you at the symposium is what is on her info on the bellspalsy website.

The count for dinner now stands at FOURTEEN . . . only one more brave soul needed to book the party room at Gino's.

About the pirate exhibit, when I looked into booking tickets online I saw that the last entrance time for the exhibit Thursday is 3:30 and the museum itself closes at 5:00 with admissions closing at 4:00. Is that going to be too early for those of you flying in? It's an eight-hour drive for us, so trying to arrive by 3:00 means leaving at 5:00 in the morning.

I'm not planning on doing anything at the symposium until Friday afternoon, so a Friday morning excursion is still doable. I still want to do dinner, though.

Thoughts?

OHHH...Our plane doesn't even land until 2:55...I know Capt'n Deb gets in earlier but I think Phyl gets in to O'HARE in the afternoon...I can always go on Sunday aafternoon (which was my original plan-after everyone was gone) so don't make plans around me!!  We'll figure this all out!

We arrived in Michigan yesterday to our daughters and Dad is now working on a project of putting in a new bathtub.      He is now saying that  if he gets done earlier than he thought, we come may to Chicago Weds.           So who knows.      We won't be able to get in to the Drake till in the afternoon Thurs.      I will know what I am doing as it gets done!     LOL!       I don't know if we will go to the pirate exhibit or the Science and Industry museum with Harry Potter.                  I am not giving up my Woodfield Mall stop anyway and hope for the either Sears Tower (now Willis Tower if that is right spelling) or the Hancock one.    We've been to the Sears one at day and night.
So won't be long till we all meet and hope it cools down also!                         Cheryl R

My flight leaves at an ungodly early hour from the west coast... having me up before the sun (not to mention the roosters) to catch it. Once I get to my hotel I'll need to recharge my batteries (per say).

I KNOW I will be a weary traveler... as I do not sleep on planes very well.

I will  skip all afternoon activities as it will take everything I can to muster up energy- to go for dinner.

But arbee dar- hey you maties go to the pirate museum without me

It's looking like the Field Museum is not going to work out Thursday evening, so I am not going to try to leave at the crack of dawn to make it in by mid-afternoon. I will take the girls another time over the weekend.

I would like to do dinner, though, so shall we go ahead and set a time? With Lilan that makes fifteen, so could somebody please reserve a party room? We may yet recruit others.

I am booked solid the next two days with my son getting braces on, my middle daughter having doctor appointments, physical therapy, and a second foot surgery, plus a school board meeting and hearings for the man who caused the accident that killed my brother-in-law last spring. Did I mention the cat needs to go to the vet? I'm not quite sure when I am going to pack, off to do some laundry now before bed.

I'd kinda like to ask if someone else might be able to handle calling about the party room.

Thanks,

I just called Gino's this morning. To arrange a room involves a contract arrangement, with food ordered ahead of time, like catering. $16 to $30 per person. That sounds unlikely to me. Also she said the Cubs are in town, so expect the restaurants, including Gino's, to be busy. Hmmm...

Braces are on and hair is cut. We're home for a short while before afternoon doctor and physical therapy appointments.

I was hopeful that the Cubbies would be playing in the evening, but no such luck. The game is scheduled for 1:20 p.m.

Maybe we should just pick a time to meet at Gino's and hope for the best.

Don"t know what I'll be doing thurs nite as my back is totally giving me a hard time--was at the urgent care most of Sat and had to have another cortisone shott-- >:( I've got sacroiliitus and have a hard time sitting at all.  The doc told me not to go to Chicago or he would give me a spanking.  But who am I to listen to anyone?????? AAAARRRRR!!!!! Gave myself a pedicure today and did a lot of resting.  Am showing up with my thermaphore heating pad and my tens machine.  I'm probably crazy to get on a plane at all, but you people are so important to me and my sanity!

I suggest we plan to meet in the Drake lobby at a set time and take it from there. If we get there early we may not have to wait so long to get a table.

Phyl, as far as I can tell, a burger from the hotel restaurant is $14. That's what makes the Drake so classy. :)

This is link to a pdf file of a list of restaurants within walking distance from the Drake:

and another for late night places:

I think we should just order some pizza delivered from Chi-Town Pizza (on the second list), and have a party in Phyl's  room. :)

Thanks  Steve for the link... $14 burgers.. better be angus beef with mayo, tomatoe, lite lettuce... with a side of Idaho potatoes (better be the whole state for that price!)

Regardless of what you all want to do... just keep me posted.  I got cell numbers as well (for those of you silly enough to share them with me :D ) and if Deb does fly in... and if we need to rest our backs ahead of dinner... just have the front desk do a wake up call for us before dinner.

Thank you for that list, Steve. It answered some lingering questions in my mind. First, that Michigan avenue is pedestrian-friendly. Second, that the Red Roof Inn is within walking distance to the Drake. Coco Pazzo Cafe (Tuscan Italian) is right next to the Red Roof Inn and is listed as eight blocks away.

Parking is going to be an issue for all of us. Phyl and Cap'n Deb have reported back problems as well. I am going to be pushing a wheelchair, so I would appreciate someplace between Drake and Red Roof Inn rather than north of the Drake if at all possible.

When I have a chance I will plot out some of the suggestions from the list that Steve posted on my AAA Chicago street map. Hmm. I also need to locate my GPS.

I have one more suggestion to throw out there: the Mity Nice Grill in Water Tower Place.

It's very near the Drake, and reasonably priced, with a wide-ranging American menu. I just called and they still have reservations available for Thursday evening and can handle a party of this size.

I'm trying to think of places in walking distance that are both lower-priced and can handle a big group -- but have a touch more Chicago style than Cheesecake Factor/Cali Pizza Kitchen -- will keep thinking and asking around in case I'm forgetting someplace obvious!

Not at all.  Its a benign way of alerting people that you're deaf in one ear.  This is especially pertinent at a convention where the majority of the participants will be SSD.

Most definately not a joke and sold on the ANA website :

My routine in the morning is to go out the door: with a watch, earplugs in the pocket, ANA "deaf left" pin on my shirt and another pin on my outer jacket. I never go anywhere without these otherwise I feel naked.  ;D ;)

People will re-position themselves when talking to me without my having to say a thing. People in the grocery store I know who probably tried to pass me with their grocery cart on the left, and must have said "excuse me" a few times, often look back at me to almost glare (since I did not move and hear them),... see the pin and have an automatic look of forgiveness on their face.

Sometimes people will ask me "what is an acoustic neuroma?" (since it says “acoustic neuroma association”) and I take this great opportunity to enlighten another person about this. I also had one woman come up to me who had recently gone single sided deaf ask me where I got the pin. She then explained to me that she just lost her hearing for no reason one ear, had balance issues and tinnitus. I was also noting some facial weakness in her face as she was talking. I gave her my ENT's card and suggested she get an MRI. (To this day I wonder if anything came out of that.)

I love the concept!  Just wish they were more "outfit friendly", if there's such a thing.  I'd pay the price for a 'prettier' one   ;)   Just a suggestion.

My daughter just  ::)  everytime I tell someone I'm deaf on that side.  She's sick of hearing me explain why.  And frankly, I get sick of it too!

Cheri

So those of you who want something more decorative
Here is what the ANAC (the Canadian version of our ANA) are selling

“Deaf left” pin… I never leave home without it. Very useful and helpful item... right up there with my watch.

Speaking of ears, a reminder that the Air & Water Show is going on. I know I keep harping on this fact but it's a big deal and the Drake is in the middle of it. As I sit here about a half-mile away from the hotel, I already hear very loud planes overhead (practicing).

Anyone who has sound-sensitivity issues should be prepared for lots of loud noise as well as the crowds. The show itself is Sat-Sun, but on Fri and even Thu there is a lot of random practicing going on usually.

ETA: My specific point which I forgot to actually say was bring earplugs!  ;) And carry them with you when you head outside.

Pearly Whites has an 8 am ANA leaders meeting the next morning... Some of us are on Pacific Standard time...

Can we make it 6 pm (or earlier) instead?  If we leave the hotel , walk to a place, order etc... I'll bet it will be well past 8pm before food is actually on the table. Bills arriving closer to 9pm...

Well, we're (my husband and I) in for whatever, whenever.  Lilan, why don't you just make a reservation at the Mity Nice Grill at whatever time suits the majority?  The point is to be together and get acquainted with each other.  Right?

Phyl, sorry you do not feel up to joining ...... thoroughly understand with your back giving you fits, among many other things!!!  Maybe we can at least see everyone in the lobby before going anywhere.

See you soon.  We are leaving home tomorrow since we are driving but will have Internet access via laptop along the way.

This place is Italian, casual, and a smidge nearer the Drake, though not by much. Both this and Mity Nice are a nearby stroll from the Drake -- the blocks are very short there.

Both are part of the same local chain -- it's very Chicago even though it's a family of restaurants!

Frankie's would take a reservation, and would split the bill into up to four checks.

Thank you so much for taking this on - I was wondering about the time also.  Would 6 give you enough time to get from your job?  It might be best to do it a smidge earlier (than 7- if that works for you) and cut down on the crowd and noise...either place is fine with us!  Just tell us where to be and when!  This is kind of like when we all go out with Dave's family on trips - there are 24 of us - we just show up when they tell us!!  ;D

6 is totally fine with me; in fact, I could do even earlier if people prefer (but certainly don't have to -- you all are traveling/sightseeing so probably need more leeway than I do!) -- or whatever works for the group.

I will just let everyone weigh in this evening on where and when!!!  so everyone gets a chance if they weren't online during the day, and then if we all agree on something in some fashion, am happy to make a call for the reservation tomorrow morning.

I have not been to Frankie's, but am pretty sure Mity Nice will be not be overly boisterous -- it's a bit tucked back into the mall and more something locals know about than tourists; I don't think it's usually packed in the evening. (They were fine to still take us in, so they must not be too packed!)

Please note that I will not be offended if I'm fired and a new plan comes about -- I just wanted to offer what "local" advice that I could!

Six is good for me. It's our usual dinner time at home. I had proposed seven so as not to rush anyone. Really any time will be great, except that I'd prefer not to go too late. We plan to leave mid-Missouri at 7:00 a.m. with a stop for lunch and at a MicroCenter so I can pick me up a new Mac!

The place at the Water Tower looks good. I know it lies between the Drake and Red Roof Inn. Also the girls can scope out the shopping for the next day while I am at symposium.

Phyll's and my plans are dictated by our pain levels right now.  I get in before noon and haven't figured out what to do with myself after my flight and before I can check into the Drake which is about 3:00.  I was going to wander down to Navy Pier or the Field Museum and just bop around solo, but my back is really bothering me.  I will try to do an early check in at the Drake.  If anyone is getting to town early afternoon and wants to get together I'll PM you my cell number and we can meet up.

About dinner--I'm up for anything as long as it involves deep-dish pizza.  But I want to keep Phyll company if she is out of it from the trip.  I had the TENS machine on my back all morning and it seems to have helped a lot.  Don't know how I'm going to get it on the plane cuz it looks like a bomb.  Wasn't going to check my luggage but I guess I'll have to now.

6:00 is fine with us ...... pizza is fine ..... or anything else ..... just let me know when and where.

Deb, we hope to get to the Drake shortly after noon ..... hoping we can at least stash our luggage somewhere.  Often hotels will give you early admittance if the room is available (cleaned) so hoping for that.  Then we would like to go to the Field Museum if I am not too exhausted from driving for a day & a half.  We'd love to have you go with us, if you are up for it and want to go with us.  Let me know and I will PM my cell number to you.

Captain,

Call the airline ahead of time and get “wheel chair service” to be scooted about the airport and onto the plane. You will get royal treatment (not to mentioned loaded on the plane first.)  When I had the wheel chair, post surgery flight, I was treated very well. Goodness if you are having that much back pain- just go for it. They will even assist you  through security, with luggage etc. and into the cab.

Also call the Drake and explain the recent back injury and see if you can arrange for early admittance to your room.

The hospitality industry always makes special allowances for the disabled... Captain- it sounds to me that you have
debilitating pain that is disabling you-thus you qualify here.

Speaking of bills, I highly doubt we'll be able to get 15 separate checks,

Why not?  ;D

6 is a bit early for me, but just set it up at 6 if that is best, and I will get over there when I can. I land at O'Hare at 5:02 pm.

have also noted it to the Captn as I do wheelchair at all airports for the past few years (most certainly helps with very large airports such as ORD, ATL, Heathrow, etc).  I can never make such walks.  Will check on the Captn later today to see how the wench is holding up.

See if you can get in a handicap accessibile room when you check in.               Sounds like would be very handy for you both!

How about if we set dinner at 6:30 to allow Steve a little more breathing room?

Is the consensus to book Mity Nice for 6:30, then? If anyone gets over there early, it's easy to entertain oneself in Water Tower for a bit! The anchors are a giant American Girl and Macy's, and then there are lots of smaller stores in the mall.

http://www.shopwatertower.com/html/storedirectory.asp

My impression was that Gino's seemed a little discouraging as to the crowd/convenience factor; no one cast a vote for Frankie's; and Mity Nice was the one place willing to do separate checks if we ask nicely!

I don't mean to take over, I just thought I could come up with a couple ideas as a local! If there are other/better plans I'm happy to just drop it!

Lilan, I think you should go for it.

I'm not sure whether to join you or try and keep Phyl and Deb company in their room. Maybe I can pick something up to go for them?

If 6:00 pm is better for most, then do that, and I will come over and join you when I can.

One way or another, this is going to be fun.  ;D

OK, I have perhaps something more conducive to our needs. It's also in Water Tower and is more casual, with food stations of all types, where everyone can order what they want on their own, then all sit together. It would be less of an issue with early or late arrivals, splitting bills, etc., as it's much more casual. People can come and go and pay as they please!

Entrees are under $10, and there is a $10 dinner special: soup or salad, entree from any of the kiosks, and gelato for dessert!

http://www.foodlifechicago.com/foodlife-menu.pdf

They technically don't take reservations but seem very willing to work with me on reserving a space, hopefully a quiet one. It may be slightly more boisterous than Mity Nice, but I think fits our needs in some ways better.

And it would be very easy to get takeout for anyone who stays back at the Drake or doesn't arrive in time!

OK, I'm going to book foodlife for 6:30 unless anyone has a major objection. I really like the idea that we can come and go as we please; I think that suits everyone on a traveling day better. It will be quicker and easier, and anyone who is really tired can leave on their own and not have to wait for the whole table to get through a meal, etc. And no complicated bill splitting.

It won't be the most glamourous meal ever, but casual, fun and convenient, and avoids all the formalities and constrictions of booking a large party for a true sit-down.

I apologize in advance if it's noisy! That's my one concern. I am going to explain the hearing issues and try to get us seated in as calm a corner as possible.

Looks groovy. Is this like a glorified food court? And one last question, for those with mobility problems, is there a parking garage for the Water Tower?

Thanks again, so much for coordinating this on our behalf. I feel better already having a plan for Thursday evening.

It is a glorified food court for sure. But slightly more atmospheric than the average one (by that I mean darker. LOL.)

But it's not fast-food chains -- it's one restaurant running it all, if that makes sense. It's not fast food or individual operators.

You get a little "card" that you use to "charge" whatever you buy at the stations, then you hand it over and pay as you leave. In other words, if you want a sushi appetizer and a Mexican entree and a smoothie, you don't pay three times -- you just swipe the card and pay as you leave.

Water Tower Place does have a parking garage. From anywhere within a mile a cab would probably be cheaper, even cabbing both ways.

Jeez but that menu looks generic!  No offense!  But it sounds like the most practical place to eat given that there are a lot of us.  Count me out--I want some authentic Chicago Deep dish!  Don't mean to be a party pooper.  Will order some take out, maybe.  I just don't know what my back will be up to.

Geno's East is one of the top ten pizzerias in Chicago: http://www.10best.com/Chicago,IL/Restaurants/Pizza/ if anyone is still interested.

Steve looked into Gino's days ago, and here was his report:

I just called Gino's this morning. To arrange a room involves a contract arrangement, with food ordered ahead of time, like catering. $16 to $30 per person. That sounds unlikely to me. Also she said the Cubs are in town, so expect the restaurants, including Gino's, to be busy. Hmmm...

I see it as Thursday night is more for the company than the food. There is a wide array so everyone should be able to find something. There's the rest of the weekend for us to ferret out local eateries.

Gino's East was the original choice for Thursday, but since they don't take reservations and the Cubbies are in town, we thought it would be difficult for our large party to be accommodated.

I think we'll be walking the few blocks from our hotel.

Looking forward to seeing all of you Thursday evening. Well, Friday I guess for Captain Deb and Phyl.

Or vice-versa, we could meet for a cocktail for social hour, then split so everyone can pursue their own dining interests. Obviously groups of 2-4 will not face the same restrictions as a group of 12-15.

I need to finish packing, go to bed, get up early and drive to Chicago.

I plan to be at the Foodlife place at the Water Tower at 6:30. If you all plan to meet up for happy hour before that, we are going to have to pass. I hope that everyone still plans to congregate at Foodlife, but if not several of you have my cell phone number, so please call if plans dramatically change.

See you all real soon.
