Title: New alternative to BAHA (and Transear)
Post by: jerseygirl on July 09, 2009, 05:10:47 pm
Here is something new and very interesting:

I would consider it if it were available commercially.

It sounds fascinating, but even though I read it a couple of times, I can't figure out how it is attached without "skin penetration". The picture makes it look like it is in the skull. Am I missing something?

Lisa,

I was a little confused by that too.  Maybe they mean you won't permanently have an abutment sticking out through the skin - the surgical incision to implant whatever it is they implant I guess closes up completely over it.  That's the only thing I can figure.

Sounds interesting though.  It's comforting to know that there are people working on inventing these things that we could potentially benefit from.

Thanks, Eve, for passing that on.

It is interesting. I Googled, and found this abstract at PubMed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18769364

It sounds like they do cut through the skin to embed an implant in the skull bone, but then let it heal over. The pickup device on the outside of the head then transmits an electrical or magnetic signal through the skin to the implant, which turns it into sound that travels through your skull bone. Cool.

I really could not find any information as to when this device is available commercially. I won't be the first one to get it, either. i will wait until more evaluations are done. But it does sound very promising, doesn't it? It's permanent. no abutment, nothing to insert and no special care. Sounds perfect!
