Usually the hospital gets an approval before surgery.

Thats true but I heard sometimes insurance companies say they preapprove it then deny it. Thanks Neal.

I realize it's no competition, but my BAHA surgery cost much more than that.  I think it was about $64,000 all told with the doctor, the hospital, and the Divino - I didn't even use the services of an anesthesiologist!  :o

Thankfully my insurance company paid the entire bill.  I have a $400 deductible, but had already paid that for my 1st annual MRI.

If you pre-certified with your insurance company, they should pay it.  They like to put disclaimers in their coverage letters so you can't hold them to anything.  Some times I think all the insurance companies are run by lawyers  :D

I've had quite the run around with my insurance company a few times since the first surgery.  Pre-approval was required and obtained...however, they initially denied the bill for a reason I don't remember.  We appealed and it went through with no problem.  I think sometimes they hope that people don't read the stuff they send out in the mail so they can get out of paying claims.

Mine was even messier than I anticipated partly because the neurosurgeon was "out of network" and the neurotoligist was "in network".  Just a mess.  But so far, even with all of this, I haven't had to pay a dime (I'm also covered on my husband's insurance).  So, read what they send you and don't panic if they deny something at first.  You could still get it resolved through an appeal.  A pain, but it is worth pursuing!
