Title: 100,000 Posts
Post by: sgerrard on March 29, 2009, 06:56:31 pm
Hi everyone,

During the next week or so, we are going to reach something of a milestone: 100,000 posts. You can watch the counter in the upper right corner  and at the bottom of the forum main page.

Of course it is not quantity that matters, but quality - and I think we have a lot of  that as well. Nevertheless, there is something worth celebrating when the odometer turns over a big round number. It is also a good moment to reflect on how well the forum is doing overall. Please feel free to comment.

I am a little bit early, but I will just say good work, everyone, and here is to our second 100,000.  8)

that's cool of you to notice this (i never would have noticed!!)
we'll all be on the edge of our seats posting as we get closer to the 100K mark. and the winner of the 100,000th post?  maybe they'll get a hat!

Good one, Steve.  Like Keri, it's something I never would have noticed but I like milestones. I'll be keeping an eye on it.  I wonder if we can tell which one hit it.  And I wonder if Judy is following this. And I'm thinking that if I sit up all night posting stuff, I can come up with 770 more posts. Sure, I can.  I think that's about as many as I've had in a year.  In all seriousness, you're right Steve.  It is about quality.  And it's about sharing and caring and all the other great things this family does.  I'm happy to a part of it and proud to be a member of this family.

.. and close to 7500 topics and 3500 members. But statistics aren't the only measure of this forum. It is its remarkably caring and compassionate qualities that make it a truly wondeful resource for those going though this horrible process. Thanks for being here!

I think it's equally noteworthy that with one more newbie, membership will hit 3500.

As one of the adopted stepchildren here (I had surgery for hemifacial spasm rather than AN) I am touched by the acceptance and support I have found here. HFS occurs roughly half as often as AN, but facial paralysis following surgery is much more rare. The ANA forum is a godsend to me.

Thanks guys!

I couldn't have said it better.  This is truly one place where you get what you give and sometimes even more.  This is one special group of people.

100,oo here we come!

P.S. Steve -- Thanks for noticing that! ;D

So if we write the 100,000th post do we get a prize or something???

I'd ask for a hat, but I already have one  ;D

It would be interesting to see a graph showing average number of daily posts, say by month or something similar.  I bet it's been a pretty steady climb.

As for the prize, how about we just flood the winner with PM's of congratulations!  Then the winner would have to spend a good chunck of their day sending out "thank you" PM's :)

Crikey!  Back when I "re-found" this forum in it's present form 3 years ago we had maybe one or two people a month having treatment.  Now it is 3-4 a week sometimes!  It's good to know that people are reaching out to us and that we can be there for them when they need to communicate with others who have "been there." Thanks to all you pre-postie posters, postie posters and watch and waiters. What a great group of people. This is truly "Facebook for Wonkyheads!"

The 100,000th poster can have "a good feeling inside" - that is what I use to tell my students when they would ASK what they would get - I tell the girlies that sometimes too!  ;D

That's amazing - and certainly a testimony to the wonderful people who are part of this family.  I've never "met" a more caring and compassionate group of people who are willing to talk about anything if it's on your mind.

Also, when I was counting down for my January surgery, I noticed that there were 3400 members.  Since then (just a few short months) we've almost had 100 people join us.   Wow!

It would be nice if that 3499 members never got to 3500, but I guess we know that's not going to happen.  :(    That would mean another person has an AN.  Bummer.  On the other hand, Thank the Heavens that they found this forum.  'Cause, we be the best, right?   ;)

Sue, I completely agree with you.  I am just amazed at the number of people who find themselves on this journey - watching that number climb is staggering to me and sad...but they are finding this support and that's a great thing.  I can't imagine traveling this alone.

I'm good Jan, thanks. Been lurking for a while to keep up with everyone, but keeping to myself for the most part. I just had another follow up appointment, (it's been 18 months since GK, 3 years since surgery #2 and 5 years since surgery #1) and everything is looking good. No growth and even some necrosis which is music to my EAR. Just had a hearing test too and the one ear that does work, is working perfect. All good news for this round of appointments. I now get to start going back every year instead of every 6 months.

99524 as I type this... and I've only contributed 4772 to the cause? Shame on me! Must post more! :)

...and for the approx 4 yrs I've been on this site, so many of those 100k posts have been filled with love and support.. sometimes filled with nonsense... and some filled with never-ending debates.... but, it says a lot about this forum for us to be approaching such a terrific milestone!  I just want to thank you all for contributing as you do.. .and for the ANA for allowing us to "post on!" :)

Congrats all!

I belong to a gym that is part of the Fitlinxx network, which keeps track of exercise points according to how many pounds a participant lifts and how many minutes of cardio are done. I just finished the Gold Level and am now working toward Platinum. Whenever a participant achieves a new level, the computer puts on a little fireworks show. Mine went off the day before Tony's funeral. It was a much needed diversion.

It would be fun for something like that to happen here when we get to 100,000 points.

Well, I could post another 108 responses, but I'm sure someone - or perhaps someones - would complain that I'm posting quantity, not quality  ;D

As for my two cents worth on that topic, all I can say is it's a community folks and that's what sections like AN Community are for.  If you object to someone's quantity, perhaps you shouldn't frequent areas like the community section.

I don't get on the backs of the "pirates" or complain about the PBW posts - in fact, I find them very humorous - but I honestly do feel a little offended by the comments regarding those of us with lots of posts.

Maybe I'm being hypersensitive here or perhaps I'm just in a pissy mood.  I'll admit it hasn't been the best of days.

Whatever,

Jan

it doesn't bother me either when people do lots of posts because everyone's usually saying such good things or answering questions. i was thrilled when i finally made it from 'newbie' to jr member or now, i think i'm a full member! i think this 100K post is fun. when i first read steve's latest post, i thought surely someone will hit 100K while i'm in bed tonight and i want to be around to see it, but i'd miss it.  so i was joking to steve, who was before me, that we could just count down and go back and forth till we hit it (then maybe i could win a hat too). ok, now  i'm just rambling and should probably log off and go to bed.

jan - i hope you have a great day tomorrow. i've found your many posts very helpful!

This reminds me of family vacations when my parents would point out that the odometer was about to roll over. There were four of us kids, and mom and dad would tell us well in advance to insure a nice long period of quiet in the car. It didn't mean anything, but we sure didn't want to miss all those numbers changing!

Too bad rolling odometers are a thing of the past.

I'm with you, Cindy.   I'm always curious about the future.  I wonder what the AN world will be like -- actually what the world will be like when we hit 200,000.  Does anyone know when the Forum started and what the first post was?  How long did it take to get to 100,000?

Thanks for pointing this milestone out, Steve.  It was fun watching the counter (odometer -- I remember that too, Sara) this morning.

Now back to writing.
Title: Re: 100,000 Posts
Post by: LADavid on April 02, 2009, 12:24:07 pm
Just too curious and couldn't let it go.  So I did some researching through the archives.  It seems that the Forum in this format was started on February 22, 2005 and the counter was reset to zero and that Gary (GM) made the first post -- Becky sort of verified it 3 posts later.

So it took a little over 4 years to hit 100,000.  If we write at the same rate, it'll be 2013 by the time we hit 200,000.

How about that math!

OK now I'm satisfied and I can go back to writing.

I am wanting to say since 2005 but may not be quite right.     I've been around ever since my first AN surgery in 2001.      The earlier forum was in no way like this.      All posts went to your home email which made for busy reading.      When I first was planning surgery, there  was absolutely no mention of how good life could be post op.     I was a basket case.      Everyone here had severe problems.            There was finally an article from a guy in the newsletter who did well.      I just sat and bawled that there was a chance of doing ok afterwards.                 I had made my surgery date in Aug but was not till Nov so past harvest time for my husband.       Long scary wait.
2 years later before even a hint of having NF2.                        I am very grateful for what people can talk about now and how I feel have been of help to other ANers.                  I do sometimes wish I didn't have to mention the 4 surgeries as am not bragging by any means or trying to show I am worse off than others.    I have been lucky to fairly well in spite of so many.  I can only say that now since past them and not at the time.            You can kind of forget how crappy you felt.

what a HUGE milestone for us here! Amazing.. and not all the posts were utter nonsense! :D

Congrats all for such a HUGE accomplishment! For all that has been shared over all of these posts..... great job.

Cheryl R, I believe you are correct. A good way to judge is this... (since JoeF and I were around for all the fun....)... check the "Archives" forum... look at the originating date of the last post there. The "Archives" forum did not exist in the old format. ;)

Congrats all!  congrats Sara for pushing it to this milestone... and um...

*pssst, hey Steve... since JoeF is the "Quick Draw McGraw" with the Mod "delete" button, although the rest of us also tend to enjoy pushing buttons around here as well.... if we have him delete a few here and there... we could roll back the posts count and then, the Mods could put it back to 100k.... whatta thunk? Judy always recognizes my voice on the phone... today, she didn't.   And now this?  Definate setback :)

... and she most certainly has earned her stars.  Heck, she tolerates me... that earns her definate stars! :)

Phyl ~

Are you feeling better or is the shock from Judy's post a setback?    ;)

Judy Vitucci is the ANA Director and has earned her stars.

wow! Just 204 more posts from me and I'll break 5000! w00t! :)

Is now a good time to mention that when you reach the milestone of 5000 posts, that will represent approximately 20% of all posts to the forum in the last 4 years?  *runs and hides behind Ernie*  :)

Actually it will be 5% (or 1 in 20 posts) but still, that's impressive.

Not sure, Keri. Either a warm fuzzy hat (maybe a metallic pink? hint, hint) from Steve or, more likely, a warm fuzzy feeling ala Kaybo.

Either way, I'm happy. It's a fuzzy week in the ANA world, after all.

What does metallic pink look like?

Kinda shiny and sparkly like if there were a pink metallic car. Seriously though, Steve, I do not wish to butt into your knitting lineup.

The earlier forum was in no way like this.      All posts went to your home email which made for busy reading.      When I first was planning surgery, there  was absolutely no mention of how good life could be post op.     I was a basket case.      Everyone here had severe problems.

OMG.  I was just telling the nurse practitioner yesterday that when I was diagnosed back in Sept 2001 that the list serve I was on then was nothing like the discussion forum I participate in now.  I thought they were two different associations.  I got so depressed back then that I resigned.  It was taking over my life in a very bad way.  Thanks for the improved version.

Yeah, Nancy, I was on that listserve, too starting when I was diagnosed in Nov 02.  It's how I found House Ear Institute and the docs that saved my facial nerve, bless 'em!  I ended up unsubscribing post-op because of the format as well--too much to read and my head was killing me.  This "take what you like and leave the rest" format is so much more user-friendly.  Besides, they allow us to get silly down here in the basement!  Sure helps my attitude!

So it took a little over 4 years to hit 100,000.  If we write at the same rate, it'll be 2013 by the time we hit 200,000.

There have been nearly 250 posts since this time yesterday. If we average, say, 200 posts per day, the next 100,000 will take only 500 days, or just over 16 months. I predict it will take even less time, though, because membership is increasing all the time.

Absolutely, Brian! Or maybe blame it on Ernie instead of hiding behind him? Better yet, blame it on Phyl due to her dizzying number of posts.

Nothing, Ernie! That's why it would be so much fun to blame something on you. At least that's the way it worked out when I was growing up with two brothers and a sister.

Have a great weekend.

Btw, at the current pace of 172.5 posts per day (calculated from the last 6 days posts), it will be November 2, 2010 when we hit 200,000 posts.  Mark your calendars!  ;)

It means that we are a group of people who strangle people with cords until they...opps...jumped a line in the Dictionary.  We don't strangle people.  Instead we talk too much about unimportant things.  That's a good thing.  I'd hate to have everyone think that I strangle people.  That would not be good.  I can be loquacious though.

Highly amusing post, David!  Thanks for a good chuckle to start off my day.  And I'm relieved to hear you aren't strangling others - or as Sara suggested we'd be having a felonious week  :D

Ok, now that all of you are done bandying the word loquacious about - I'm hopeful Jim will step back in and give me the definition of that word  ;D

I could  ook it up myself, but that would take away all the fun.

Help, Jim!!!
