I wish I could join! Piccies! Piccies! And please blow the warm weather this way, will ya?
Have a great time all and enjoy!

Francesco -- Thanks for pulling it all together. I will be there. And The Farm of Beverly Hills is a good place to eat. They have an outdoor patio that's a little less noisy. BTW -- as a laugh. Our waiter at Jerry's kept trying to give me back the big tip we left for him. I think he was trying to get me to recount it thinking that we had made a mistake.
And Phyl, warm air is one thing -- but we've had a heat wave. Records dropping left and right. We could use a little of your cool weather.

Great to meet everyone, I am zipping up to Phuket in Thailand to meet my folks for a few days and straight back to Singapore to jump on the flight to LA. This assuming there is no military coup, or protesters take over all the airports again in Thailand.
See you all soon.

The way things are going in the world, plan on the uprising. Just remember to tell everyone you encounter, "I'm having brain tumor surgery next week" and they'll say "oh" as they think "poor b**stard" and let you move on thinking "Thank God it's not me." It works like a charm -- or a curse -- don't know which. But you won't get stuck in any of those messy rebellions.
See you soon.

Hi all,
I plan to be there. Just returned to Italy where it was a balmy 45 degrees, to Oberlin, where it is 3, yes 3 degrees, I'm not kidding. So, that being said, a heat wave will be fine with me. My body is so confused at this point....
All you LA folks should come to the Oberlin concert at Disney Hall on Saturday the 24th in the afternoon. If you have a problem getting tickets let me know and I'll see if I can come up with some comps.
All best,
Marci
-
Welcome back, Marci. Do you have any details on the concert on Saturday -- specifically time. I'm going to see what I can find out here. What will you be playing? And btw, I don't think I ever did know this, what instrument do you play?
I'm thinking that it will be a bit cooler next weekend ... but NOT 3 degrees.

Hi David,
I'm not playing, the Oberlin Orchestra is playing. (I'm the dean of students at the conservatory so they are "my" students. I'm a rusty ex-singer, remember?) http://inside.oberlin.edu/westcoast/events.shtml is the website that has the information, but if you want to go, please let me try to get comps first.
Best,
Marci
(I do play the piano, clarinet and flute, all equally badly.)
-
Ah, now I remember. I knew about the rusty ex-singer -- I just got lost on your affiliation with the Orchestra.

Marci, that was a great link to post. Besides the blurbs on the west coast tour, it has a link to the Oberlin Conservatory itself. I had no idea it was such an important center of music. Things that impressed me:
* Rave reviews from the national press. The "hotbed" quote is good, but my favorite is the single word from Vivien Schweitzer of the New York Times: "stellar."
* 200 pianos on the Oberlin campus. Excuse me, I mean 200 Steinway grand pianos, in addition to the various other ones.
* When mentioning how many practice rooms you have (150), you make a point of mentioning "with windows."
* Not only do you have a Professor of Trombone, you also have an Associate Professor of Jazz Trombone. 8)
I can well imagine that leaving the old world charm of Tuscany and heading back into that "hotbed" might ramp up some tension and produce some facial discomfort, but you are doing great work at Oberlin, Marci. It's worth it. Best wishes for a great performance.
Steve
-
Hey Steve,
It's also a hotbed for other things but I digress...And if you've ever been in a conservatory, most practice rooms are really just closets. The "windows" thing is a great recruitment tool. I spent most of my time in Italy with a student jazz quartet (love those boys) and their professor (love him too). 8)

Wow! I am totally impressed. Francesco, Lainie, Nancy -- anyone interesting in going on Saturday?
-
David,
I'd definitely be interested in going. I'm aware of Oberlin's reputation as a great music school and would love to hear the orchestra (though I was hoping Marci would be singing, too :)). And I've yet to attend a concert at Disney Hall (I've explored the architectural nooks and crannies from the outside - an amazing building) - so it'll be a great chance to experience both.
Regarding Sunday, I've also been in touch with Linda, who lives in LA and had her surgery when Cheri was in town. She's going to try to make it to the lunch, too.
It's shaping up to be a busy weekend!

Hi all,
I'm working on getting some comp tickets (it says sold out but it's usually not the case) so I need to know who wants to go. Let me know....
Best,
Marci
-
Hi again
Definitely can get comp tickets which I will leave at the will-call so let me know who wants to go....
Marci (looking forward to walking on the beach instead of ice skating on my driveway)
-
Hey Marci
Thanks! I know Nancy and I are interested. I know two of the pieces -- they are wonderful. And the Disney Concert Hall is amazing. There may be one disappointment though. The beach is ten miles away and it may not be so balmy when you get here. We can always hope.
Thanks again,
David
-
Hi,
I will leave tickets for you and Nancy at the will-call. If things aren't crazy backstage and I'm not needed, I'll look for you. (And I will walk (or drive) to the beach if I have to.) I grew up by the Atlantic Ocean but the Pacific will do. See you soon!
Marci
-
Marci,
Thanks so much for providing the comps! I am so looking forward to the coming weekend!
(It's supposed to cool down back into the 60's by then, but you can leave your ice skates at home.:))
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Nancy
-
Hy Guys, just logged on. I would love to go to the concert also. let me know, I will be in DC but will be checking email.
Thank you. Look forward to seeing you Sunday.
Lainie.
-
Hi,
That's great! The tickets will be in will-call; y'all had better pm me your full names so I can do that. I am SO glad you are coming--it should be a great concert--and I'll hang out by the will-call so you may see me.
Best,
Marci
-
Hi Marci,
Thank you so much. David & Nancy do you want to meet up at some designated place before concert?
Lainie.

Made it back to Singapore, and its great when all these govt uprisings takes place, the airports and beaches in Thailand were brilliant no one there. Very relaxing, mad rush now packing, I must have had nomadic ancestors, for me a tooth brush and spare pair of undies is all I need, wife is a bit more old school, put it this way when we went to Hong Kong for a long weekend the hotel porter genuinely asked if we were relocating to HK as he struggled with two trolleys
See you all soon.
-
Ok, so I've got comp tickets waiting at will-call for Lainie, Nancy and David. Anyone else decides to go you can let me know even at the last minute. I will have my computer and therefore access to email with me.
See you all soon!

Just logged on -- Marci, thank you so much for offering these comps - I'm going to be in a training that afternoon and unfortunately cannot make it. I will look forward to seein gyou the next day. Nancy, David and Lainie -- thrilled for you guys! What an awesome outing. The concert hall is absolutely magnificent.
-
I'm here in LA! I'll see David, Nancy and Lainie at the concert (I'm sitting with you) and everyone else at lunch. So nice to be away from the frigid temps and ice and snow. In a strange twist of fate, there is a neurological convention at this hotel. I'm tempted to ask them if they want to do show and tell. :D
See you soon.

All,
Will have to miss lunch on Sunday because I need to go back to Ohio unexpectedly (on the Saturday night red-eye). Fortunately, I spent all of yesterday with friends and colleagues in Santa Monica and did in fact watch the sunset. It felt so good to see/hear/smell the ocean and feel the sand beneath my feet that I got all sappy and cried. We watched dolphins and seals play, had a picnic, replete with wine, on the beach and had an all round wonderful day. Thanks for the suggestion; it was well worth it.
I'm looking forward to seeing Lainie, David and Nancy at the concert tomorrow at 2pm--could one of you bring a camera so we can at least have a picture? As for everyone else, I'm sorry I won't meet up with you, but don't be surprised if I just move here. :P
Best,
Marci

Dolphins? Are you sure they weren't surfers in dark wetsuits? I'm glad you had a good day -- too bad the weather isn't better. And whether you realize it or not, there was an earthquake yesterday around 1 PM -- a 3.2 I think.
David
-
Definitely dolphins. They did a few flips for us! And we were listening to the waves crash so never noticed an earthquake.
M
-
Marci,
I'm sorry you'll miss the lunch on Sunday, but I'm SO glad you got to spend time at the ocean and see the sunset. Even with the wet weather, it's always wonderful to experience the beach, and all the better when you can catch a glimpse of the dolphins swimming just beyond the surf. Sounds like you had a great day. ;D
(David - I never even felt the earthquake yesterday - I only found out from watching the news!)
I'll be at the concert tomorrow with camera in hand. Maybe Lainie can even try another video with her cell phone. ;)
Looking forward to seeing you, Lainie and David tomorrow - and Francesco, Rick and family, and maybe a few others on Sunday.
Nancy
-
Have a FAB time, take piccies and wish I could join you all!

Hey all
Just let you know -- the Oberlin Symphony was fantastic! I was awestruck. And Marci was just as awesome. Thank you so much for the comps (we sat it the VIP section). It was really a great day. Marci or Nancy will post the pics and Lainie the movie (maybe). The LA group is off to meet Rick tomorrow -- at least those of us who aren't sick.
David
-
Hope you all had a great lunch today. I am sorry to have missed it, but we did have a great time at the concert and for a little bit afterwards. Our visit was the highlight of my visit to LA (and thank you for the great gift--I love the plate!). I have a very grainy iphone photo of Lainie, David, Nancy and I but I can't seem to get it to paste from Photobucket. Can someone remind me how to post a picture? By the way, when I landed in Cleveland, it was 7 degrees.
Marci

Hi Marci,
thank you so much for the concert tickets yesterday. I had a wonderful time, the orchestra was amazing and so talented for their age. I woke up this morning with the start of a cold, so was unable to meet up for lunch with Rick. As he is having surgery on Wednesday I didn't think it was a wise thing to do. I am sure he was well taken care of by David and Nancy. Francesco get well soon and Linda welcome to our LA support group. I hope to meet up with you all after Rick has had his surgery. Rick all the best for next week and don't forget stool softeners and as I am sure David told you, relish every ice chip.
Lainie.
Marci great meeting you, and today it was a " bone chilling " 58
-
Hey Marci!
It's hard to believe you're back home and posting already! We all had such a marvelous time yesterday. The Oberlin orchestra was absolutely amazing. They sounded like a world-class symphony that had been performing together for years. I was so impressed, and I'm sure you're very proud! Thanks so much for letting us be a part of it.
It was great to meet your friends and colleagues, too. And they were all so happy to meet a few members of your "forum" family! It's good to see you're surrounded by a wonderful group of people who all care very much about you. :)
The evening was great, but over too quickly - we all hope you'll be back to visit us (and the beach) again soon.
My pic came out better than it looked on the small screen, so I'll go ahead and post it. (I still want to see yours with the "soft-lighting.")
Thanks again Marci - it was great meeting you!

Hey Nancy
Thank you for posting the picture. It did turn out well. And we're all dressed up!
And again, Marci, thank you so much for inviting us to the concert and introducing us to your friends. They are an incredible family -- and it was especially fun meeting Andrea -- one of our family. Sorry you had to leave so soon -- and go back to 7 degree weather. I hate to tell you what it was like here today.
Looking forward to seeing you on your next visit.

Great picture of the four of you! and a concert to boot.
Thanks for sharing the picture.

Hi All,
Well our group got whittled down a bit for the LA Area Meetup today (Lainie, Marci and Francesco - we missed you! :(), but we still had a great time with our cozy little group of 6 1/2.
We had some new faces, too - Rick (QRM), his wife Jane and daughter Rain (who all flew in from Singapore for Rick's surgery this Wednesday), and Linda (LHarper) and her husband Brian.
Here are some pics:

Jane, Rain (too cute!) and Rick, 1-25-09
And for the animal lovers in the group, a visitor who strolled by our table whose pic I just had to take :):

Rick and his family will be in LA for a month while he recuperates, so we're already planning to have another get-together before he leaves. ;D
I know I've said this before, but it is always SO wonderful to meet members of the "forum" family. :)

Not fair! I haven't met any of these people, and you all are having AN weekends together, with concerts and luncheons and sunshine! I am envious.
Very nice pictures, too, thanks for posting them. Whoever thought having an AN could be so much fun?
Steve
-
great pictures Nancy. Only in LA are the pictures of the "Cat" not unusual.
Lainie.
-
Great pics, Nancy! Yes, Steve, it is almost "fun" having an AN - I never would have met so many people from so many different places and walks of life! Good luck, Rick, we'll be thinking of you Wed!
What a cool cat that was!
Cindy
-
So, what kind of cat was that, exactly?
M
-
Great lookin' group! I'm glad you all could get together! Thanks for posting the pictures!
Regards,
Brian

fab piccies and what a time you all had! I'm jealous!!!!!! So tickled you all were able to meet up and have a nice time. thanks for sharing these!
Phyl

Glad you all liked the pics - it was great meeting everyone.
Rick was fairly relaxed about his upcoming surgery, and Jane felt much better after meeting and talking to four others who have been down the same road. We also spoke a lot about our on-line support system, and the friends we've made from all around through the forum - it really is pretty amazing.
As far as the cat goes, I never found out the breed, but I think he may be one of these little guys:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_(cat) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_(cat))
Steve - we'll be saving you a seat at the next lunch...LA's just a straight shot down Interstate 5. ;)
-
Great pictures and it sounds like great fun. The concert and lunch sound great even if the weather wasn't. I wish I could have been there too and met all of you.
Rick -- I'm wishing you the very best for your surgery on Wednesday. HEI has a great reputation and I'm sure you'll be in good hands. You and your family will be in my prayers.
Best wishes to all,
Wendy
-
Thanks for the info on the cat--fascinating. I have hybrid dogs (aka, mutts) but they don't get noted in Wikipedia. They're definitely less intelligent, however. Rick, I wish you well this week.
Marci
