Title: Bad Weather
Post by: Sue on December 14, 2008, 09:29:06 am
Hope all you North Easterner's and Canadians are keeping warm and that everything is okay in your neighborhood.  Of course, if you are without power, we won't hear from you for awhile.  The Arctic Air is heading in our direction, and even though it's going to be cold and a bit snowy, I don't anticipate major problems here.  I hope.

Bundle up!

Actually today it is quite balmy here in Southern Ontario at 3c.  It is very windy in my neck of the woods.  I have a Santa outside on one of my brick arches, who might just blow away.  When I look out my front window I see his beard blowing in the wind.  Long term forecast 11c on Friday.  Who knows weather people and politicians attend the same college anyway.....College of LIES  ;D

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas anyway!

The weather forecast for the week here, looks very interesting.  Cold (but Ontario has us beat), windy and then more snow later in the week and something ominous for Sunday as a wetter system moves in.  Don't know what that will do!  Glad I don't have a job to get to.  The city streets in Portland are an ice rink, so my hubby will be staying home tomorrow.  Our son is recovering from is ACL surgery, so he's not working.  Our only concern is getting the dog out to do his doggy thing!  Brrrrr, is right.

And to keep this AN related, the cold wind bothers my facial numbness and makes my drippy nose all the worse.

Well, I tell ya, if I were homeless, I'd think I'd be hopping a rail for someplace warm!  But, yeah, it's tough.  Lots of people watching out for the homeless around here too.  And their pets.  We just saw that story on the news and my son asked....if you are homeless how can you take care of a pet?  Don't know the answer to that one.

Glad I live in southeast Michigan.  That is the furthest north I would ever want to be!!!  Right now, we are a balmy 52 degrees....but will go down to 26 by morning, with a very big cold front coming thru, with 50 mile an hour winds.  Tues., the weatherman said 2-4 inches of snow.  Yuck.
My daughter lives in Florida, and my son near Atlanta.......why the heck are we still living here????   ???  ha.
This summer, my daughter and I were going across to Windsor (to the casino), and was stopped at the border.  The guy said "wait a minute, the mother lives in Michigan, and the DAUGHTER lives in Florida???  Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?  ha.
Donnalynn.....that is soooo nice of you and your family to go help the homelessness!!!!  How sweet.
Keep warm, everyone!

I may try phoning KBonner (Katie) as she is in the middle of the declared emergency area.  Need to check on her.  There are others I know just north of us (we are approx 5 miles south of where the ice storm line hit) that I need to check on.  Will keep an eye on things. News is fugly and the destruction brutal. Here where I am, we lucked out as we are on the "line' of foul weather... we either get hit or don't.

Here in Iowa yesterday we were 45 in the AM and down to 0 by early evening with the winds too.     BRRR!                   There is talk of snow Thurs which is when our Michigan daughter is flying home so just hope it holds off.                               I hope Katie is not too bad off with their damage.
Yesterday we went to spaghetti dinner and then auction benefit for my husbands uncle who has cancer.          His ins will not let him get his chemo in the central Iowa area where we live but has to go 150 miles to Iowa City for it.       A CT scan showed some help from it.   He has colon and lung cancer.   Maybe liver too.     Looked pretty good though.

Well, if it makes any of you feel better (or warmer), we had 3 inches of snow in Nashville last Thursday!  Yes, growing up in the Northeast, I realize 3 inches is no big deal, but you should see what happens when it falls down here in the South!   :o

I couldn't even get out of my driveway because so many cars couldn't make it up the hill I live on, so they just parked right in the street and walked home!  it was quite enteraining to watch from the warmth and safety of my own home!   :D

Stay safe everyone!

Okay, you guys have got to see this  youtube video.  This was on our news last winter I think when we had some snow/ice in Portland.  This made youtube and it's great!  Not so great for the people involved, however.  If this had happened to me, with an AN, I'd have been spinning in my head for a week!

And then, if you haven't seen Bailey the Unknown Reindeer, please see this because it's hilarious.

Well in my neck of the woods in Ontario Canada, they are predicting "A STORMAGETIN" for tomorrow.  I live about 45 minutes from Niagara Falls and we are going to get clobbered with lake effect snow and gust up to 75 kilometres.  Snow fall could result in half a metre.  I can't convert that to the imperial system, but I can tell you it is a lot of SNOW.

I'm nice and toasty did some Christmas baking today and I am venturing outside tomorrow, only to get the mail and advertisement flyers.  I do not walk all that great in the snow.  It really messes me up!  My oldest son went to get me some more baking supplies to keep me busy.  I've got Bing in the back ground singing, can anyone guess that tune? .......hehehe  ;D

Yep, I've "battened down the hatches" here in Northwestern NJ, too.  We are just starting to get the threat of the first few flakes of what promises to be a "pile-o-snow".  I think we are supposed to get a break tomorrow then more bad weather on Sunday - which is when my parents are flying in from AZ!

Anne Marie, I like your idea of staying inside and baking.  I have some office work this morning then think I'll bake a loaf of bread and put on some beef barley soup for dinner.  And something red.

WOW is snowing and blowing here!!!!  There was even thunder and lightening.  I opened my front door to get the mail and from the drifting a wall of snow fell in on my feet.  I only had slippers on and was it cold.  Unbelievable how cold the back of my house is.  I know its from the wind blowing out of the north east.

I guess we in the north east are going to have a White Christmas with more snow to fall on Sunday.  The long range forecast is predicting another blast on Christmas Eve.

Stay safe everyone,

I'm happy to report that it's 73 degrees and sunny in Nashville today.  I think this is the first time we've seen the sun in about 2 weeks.

I'm enjoying it now, because tomorrow it will probably be below freezing again.

Jim you are a very WISE MAN!!!  Tis the season  ;)  My sons Nicholas and Gabriel are trying to dig us out.  My husband is working a double at the hospital, because many could not get in for the afternoon sift.  Got a lovely pot roast in the oven and it smells sooooo good.  Nothing like comfort food o a cold snowy evening.

Okay Lori, I think at this moment you ARE NOT one of my favourite people!  Talk about rubbing salt into the wound  ;D  Enjoy your sunny warm evening!

Well, I would like to have a white Christmas!  And my little ones love the snow so I can enjoy watching them from indoors where it's warm.  I grew up in the Northeast with lots of snow and I remember how much fun it was before you had to drive in it, so I'd like them to be able to experience that.  But I don't think that's going to happen here.

The rest of my family, still in the Northeast, is getting buried with snow right now though.  At least I'll get to see pictures.   ;D

Is now a bad time to mention that it's in the 70's here and sunny too?  Whodathunk that 1 week ago we miraculously got snow (it's only snowed 3 times since I've been alive) and today it's where it is..  Texas weather; gotta love it!  ;)

Lori and Brian -

if you want a white Christmas, head my way - and I'll head yours; I could use some nice warm weather.

While I'm all for a white Christmas, I honestly didn't need it to be this  white  ::)

The freezing rain started about midnight and was followed by snow.  By 4:50 a.m. the school district was calling saying the schools were closed - which was a HUGE disappointment to my children  ;)   Yeah, right!  :D

Just as I was drifting off to sleep again about 6 a.m. I got the call that my office was closed too.

Spent some major time shoveling today.  All told, we got about 6 inches.  My parents who live about 90 minutes away from us got 12  :o

All I can say is thank God the symposium is in August.

Although maybe we should ask the ANA to move it to LA in December for 2011 ;D

I like the snow.  In the mountains, where it belongs!  But, since I don't have to be at a job anymore, I don't mind the winter so much.  I like a good storm now and then.  We don't often get the snow storms here, so have to kind of enjoy it if while it's here.  It'll be back to rain soon enough.

Texas weather?  Maybe now, but not in the summer!  For me anyway.

Actually, right now, I'd enjoy being back in Hawaii where I lived for three years.

As expected, our warm weather is gone now.  Typical TN weather - you're wearing shorts one day and a furry parka the next.

I saw pictures in the paper of the Great White North - whoa!  Am I glad I don't have to try to shovel all that!  You might have a white Christmas, Easter and 4th of July!!

Hope everyone stays safe - no slipping and sliding recommended for those with lousy balance to begin with!

Wow, Jan, don't get heat rash!  ;D

I don't think the weather people know what the heck is going to happen here in the greater Portland/Vancouver area.  It's nuts.  Snowing again.  The streets are a mess and many roads are closed.  That picture I posted?  Well, you can't hardly tell there is that little stone wall there anymore, and the little spruce is almost covered in white.  We are hunkered in and watching movies.  We saw Mamma Mia last night.  The boys put up with my Chick Flick.  I loved it.. silly and fun.  Meryl Streep is a marvel.  We watched a movie that we had: Trains, Planes and Automobiles, and it's been awhile since we've seen it and it was hilarious all over again.  And tonight, it's Pay Per View and Fred Claus.  As long as we have power, we're doing okay!  Time to drag out a puzzle, too.

Hang in there, guys!

I think we are on for a white Christmas in Portland after all. This morning we had 6 to 8 inches of snow, with a 1/4" of ice layered on top for good measure. The plans for a family Christmas in Ashland have been scrapped for now, the roads are just too hazardous. I have already started eating some of the presents I was going to deliver.  ;D

I have a fond memory from college of driving a borrowed car in January in Chicago during one of those sub zero winter storms, and running out of gas at night, and putting gas in it from a can, and having some spill on my hand. I don't know what the wind chill of that was, but yikes that was cold!

Hope everyone stays warm and safe. Just think, tomorrow the days start getting longer again!

I can see the snow-covered mountains from where I live.  Does that count?  Actually, by LA standards -- it's been a little chilly at night in the low 40s.  But the closest snow is still 20 miles away.

AP gives a mention to the Seattle/Portland storms: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ifTg_yfYpAykFLdY6fVBnb3NeMZAD957VL301

I like ye olde time feel of abbreviating Oregon as Ore.

This is the most snow in Portland since 1980, I am told - wasn't here then, but it is easily the most I have seen.

Aha, I know about this!  In newspapers and other written articles it is proper to use Ore. as the abbreviation because OR is only the postal abbreviation and really isn't the correct way of writing it out for other uses.  Hopefully I put that correctly.

Like Lori I am in the shorts today parka tomorrow weather zone called Tennessee...

It was 11*  Monday morning when I got up with some rain turning to ice , yesterday it was 23* and
raining but not freezing and this morning it is 55* ... raining a little with 100% chance of strong thunderstorms
later today...winds 30 mph with gusts of 45mph... I am gonna have to put rocks in my pockets to hold
me down if I go outside ... but seeing th wind messes with balance big time I may not go out at all ..watching
the trees swaying  through the window is bad enough

Stay warm ,dry and safe

Seems like this is a pretty appropriate topic for most of the country right now!

All the schools around Nashville are closed tomorrow because it's cold.   ???  What????  Haven't these people ever heard of a winter coat and some gloves?  Today it was 24 degrees - tomorrow is supposed to be 23.  Does that one degree make that much difference?  Oh my goodness, kids these days.

Those of us who survived winters in Upstate NY know what cold is - with a few feet of snow thrown in there for some real fun.  They'd fall over laughing if they found out schools close down here because it's 23 degrees!  And my older kids would be laughing at me for giving the "I used to walk to school in the winter - barefoot - uphill, both ways" speech.

Stay warm - and if anyone knows where it's hot right now, let me know - I need a plane ticket there.

Lori

Lori -

you are so right about school closings.  Today it was a balmy -10 here, not counting the wind chill.  The school district called me bright and early (5:30 a.m.) to say that school would be closed "due to the extreme weather".  I was hoping for a similar call from work, but no dice.  End result, Jan, at home with two kids - one of whom refused to go back to sleep after that 5:30 a.m. wakeup call  :P

It's supposed to get down to -30 tonight and I never did hear the potential high for tomorrow, but at 8:35 p.m. the school district called and said that school will be closed again.  Tomorrow was supposed to be an early dismissal day, but now it is a "snow day".  Guess I'll be wasting another vacation day tomorrow at home with the kids - unless my office decides to close.

The amazing thing is that starting with today, my kids now have a five-day weekend, since Monday is Martin Luther King Day.  Thank goodness the school district in their infinite wisdom didn't decide to give them inauguration day off - or it would be a six-day weekend  ::)

My kids were just off of school for two weeks during the holidays - and they got the Friday before off as a snow day.  It seems like kids spend more time out of school than in school these days.  And while I don't at all mind spending time at home with my kids, their school schedule is wrecking havoc on my ability to get to my paying job.

Oh well, at least the school district won't be calling again in the morning; maybe both my kids will sleep in.  One can only hope  ;D

Global warming!  BAH!  I'd like to know where that's going on - it's certainly not here.  I think we should all head over to Al Gore's house and hunker down there for a little bit - save ourselves some money on our own heating bills!  I have a feeling his solar panels aren't keeping him toasty warm since we didn't see any sun here in TN for about 2 weeks!

Brian, just watch a little Sesame Street - they usually have the Spanish word of the day.  I'm sure that will help!

My daughter's school is the only one in Middle TN open today (yay!).  They don't have busses so they weren't concerned about them freezing their little fingers off waiting for the bus.  Of course, when you go to pick them up at the end of the day, they all have their jackets unzipped, their hats and gloves in their backpacks - doesn't seem to bother them one bit!
