I'm pleased to report that I've finally received 'Notes' - the quarterly newsletter for ANA members. As usual, it's full of interesting information as well as the much praised piece from our own David Douglas Shannon (aka 'LADavid'), recounting his AN journey from diagnosis to where he is today.
I can state, without reservation, that the praise was well-deserved. David's account is concise and compelling. I commend his writing skills and highly recommend those who have access to it, read David's story. I enjoyed reading it and, of course, I wish him well as he continues his journey toward full recovery. :)

I also saw David's piece. Unfortunately, half the pages of the back had been ripped off. I literally had to "read between the lines", but I also want to commend you for your work, David. Well done!

Newsletter? I must have missed that boat....where do I sign up? ;D

Right here: https://secure.baxinternet.com/~anausa/membership_donate.html (https://secure.baxinternet.com/~anausa/membership_donate.html).
Annual membership dues for the Acoustic Neuroma Association: $40. and includes the quarterly newsletter.
I noted your 'wink', but thought it might be a good idea to put this information out there for those who may be interested in receiving 'Notes' and the benefits of ANA membership.

I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to hold my mail man hostage until I get my newsletter. I'm beginning to think he's got it, he's just not done reading it yet.
If there wasn't a gas shortage here in Nashville, I'd drive to Canada and read Anne Marie's! I'm sure she's done with it by now.

I decided that Ike must have blown my copy of the newsletter away! Haven't seen it yet, but did get the packet for the fall ANA Houston Support Group! We are meeting in my neck of the woods....d***inson, TX in the community room at Amegy Bank on Termini Drive. It is on November 1 from 1-3. I hope to see lots of folks from this area there.

glad to see I'm not the only one waiting :(

i'M STILL WAITING TOO...

I received mine on Monday past. Great artcle on David. Loved it. It is my first newsletter and I'm signing up as a member. ;D
-
Thank you, Jim. I appreciate your comments. And thank you Jo and Tammy. I do have a confession about the concise part. That was actually a 5,000 word story that I had to edit down to 1600 words for the newsletter. It was painful but it seems like it worked out. And by the way, while I haven't seen the newsletter yet, I think Lainie has a letter to the editor. She's a regular participant on this Forum -- who Nancy (NL) and I will be meeting for coffee tomorrow.
Thanks again
David
-
Would the 5000 word article work to be put in a magazine? I am a magazine nut and have seen many other health conditions written about. Even seen ANs briefly mentioned in hearing loss articles. Good Housekeeping or Ladies Home Journal or others, here you come!

I guess that's the price you pay for being a hero! :D
-
David~
I still have not received mine, but was able to read your article. As I knew, you are a wonderful author and it was a great piece! ;D
It is strange that a lot of the "heros" don't have theirs! Maybe we are really "sidekicks" (watched "SkyHigh" with the girlies yesterday!)!!
K
-
Hey, wait a minute... how did you get to read David's article if you didn't get your newsletter? You must know people in high places....
Lori
-
Maybe she's just a "FOD" - friend of David - and got her own personal copy of the article ;D
-
Ah, figures... they always go for the blondes..... :D
Lori
-
Jan & Lori~
Well, I hope that I am a FOD, but I guess there are perks to being the "sweet, innocent" sister...
I'll just let you wonder where I got it...
K ;D
-
K -
I might not be the "sweet, innocent" sister, but I'm betting I read David's story long before you did.
Trumped ya! :D
Jan
-
jan-
I am sure you did & probably NOT the "short" version either!
K
-
Jan's right. She did see the story first. But not the long version. I don't even know where that is anymore. There was one thing that had to be unfortunately left out -- my encounter with the MRI Tube o' Gloom. Probably a good thing -- it would have scared too many away.
-
David -
I just love it when I'm right ;) LOL
The MRI Tube o'Gloom sounds very sinister - I'm not sure if I'd like to read about it or not.
BTW, put me on the list for AN Jeopardy with you and Lori - sounds like lots of fun ;D
Jan
-
I have to warn you, I happen to have a head full of useless knowledge, so I am pretty good at Jeopardy! Something's gotta be in there, right?
Lori
-
Hey, got a birthday present from the ANA today - my newsletter finally arrived !!!! ;D
David -
you ARE a good-looking guy both pre and post op ;) and I enjoyed reading your article again.
I also liked the letters - especially the one by Francesco; very well written.
Now I'm looking forward to my December newsletter so I can sign up for the symposium 8)
Jan
-
I guess I'll have to wait until my birthday to get my newsletter. I hope I get the December issue before next August.
Lori
-
Though I haven't yet received my newsletter through the mail, I did have the pleasure of meeting with Lainie and David for coffee last week, so I was finally able to take a look at the issue everyone's been talking about.
Lainie's letter, "Coping with the Psychological Impact of AN," and David's story, "A New Life, A New Adventure" were not only published in the same issue, but also on the same page! (Photo-op!)

Thanks David and Lainie, for sharing your stories with the rest of your AN family.
-
Wow! Beautiful picture - you guys look great! ;D
Thanks for sharing it.
Jan

Another great photo from LA! Thanks, Nancy. Can't wait to meet ya'll next month!
Lori, there's the article. Can you read it?
cindy

Lori, there's the article. Can you read it?
Cute, Cindy ;D
I guess Lori will have to get out her magnifying glass for this one!
Maybe her newsletter came while she was in the hospital. It will give her some reading material while she recovers.

I got my newsletter this past weekend--what a great article--the PBW finally made the ANA newsletter--we're famous, you scallies and wenches!
Thanks, David. I'm glad we could give you a little vicarious vaycay during a dark time. I could really relate to seeing a career slipping away as I have watched my art career slip away as well. Maybe you have a new career as a writer in the works. The article really touched on the emotional side on what its like to go through this loss.
Big Hugs,
Capt Deb(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee60/Captdeb_photos/pirate2.gif)

David & Lainie,
First in print in the Notes and now in pictures on the forum. WOW!!! You two really look great! What an inspiration to the rest of us!
Anne Marie

I got my battered and abused Notes......................................I think Ike got to it first! It was great reading.
Brenda
-
Lainie and David,
Both articles FANTASTIC! Great picture guys, Handsome and Beautiful. Gee I still haven't gotten my picture on the forum yet.
mema

Ok, since it seems I'm never going to get my newsletter - David can you hold that first page up just a little bit, and Lainie, a little to the left.... ok... I think I might be able to make out a word or two.
Well, I can't read what you've both said, but you look mah-velous!
Lori
-
Lori -
didn't anyone tell you? The forumite with the most hijacks in any given quarter doesn't get their newsletter.
Sorry about that. Guess you'll just have to start behaving better ;) ;D
Jan
PS - maybe if you sweet talk Phyl, she'll ask the ANA to send you another one free of charge
-
Oh, no one told me!! I guess I'll just have to start doing a better job of blaming you! ;D I think I can do that!
Lori
-
Hi,
Finally got my newsletter! Yay! David, you are too cute and your daughter is beautiful. Your article was great.
M
-
David,
Finally got and read my newsletter and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your piece--well said!
Can't believe my support group made it too with picture of us all. I enjoy these meetings as Neil does a great job making them informative and worthwhile.
-
Arushi, I never even looked close at your support group till you mentioned it. I know you are in Florida. Very nice group and I will not say which one you are unless you point it out.
Can't believe how long it has been since we were in Philly and met.
My excitement of the day was having my 3rd D&C for a history of post menopausal female problems the last 2 years. My ob-gyn this time just asked when I wanted the hysterectomy. Hopefully will make it till next year now so not 2 major surgeries in one year. Probably shouldn't mention this here and sorry to the guys who read this. This is not cancer related also. Just frustrating. Cheryl R
-
Ok, I had no choice... I had to do it. I beat up my mail man. I guess this means I won't get a copy of my newsletter tomorrow either????
Alright, just kidding... I didn't really beat him up. Yet. But if he doesn't hand over the newsletter tomorrow, I will give him a really bad paper cut with a very stiff envelope. >:(
Cheryl, hope you are doing okay. You really need to find something else to do for excitement! Try cleaning a closet or something! Very exciting! ;D
Lori
-
Lori my brother is a mailcarrier and always is on the look out for attack dogs. You might want to try "ankle biting" as this usually gets my brother's attention!
Cheryl, very sorry you are dealing, yet again, with the medical community--SHEESH! On the flip side though I'm sure am glad the "c" word wasn't present! Hope you feel better after this procedure. Hugs to you girlfriend you've been through much.
....psssst I'm fifth from left in back row
-
Ankle biting? Perfect. I can do that. I just hope he doesn't throw a steak at me or spray me with pepper spray. Too bad I don't have those onion goggles. Sounds like they'd come in handy...
Lori
-
What, Lori ??? Still no copy ???
Tell you what, contact the ANA and mention my name - they'll send you a new one ;)
Actually I'm sure they'd send you a new one even if you didn't mention my name - sometimes I just like to feel important ;D
Jan
-
I just got my newsletter yesterday... first one I have gotten... really informative
Sher
-
Jan, I tried calling them an mentioning your name. They laughed and hung up on me. :P
I guess I'll just have to write my own newsletter.
Lori

Jan, I tried calling them an mentioning your name. They laughed and hung up on me. :P
I guess I'll just have to write my own newsletter.
Lori
Thanks for the huge laugh! I needed that - it's been a rough couple of days. Glad to see being a year older hasn't killed your sense of humor - you're still as sharp as ever :D
If you need help with that newsletter, let me know . . .
I'll have K help you ;D
Jan
-
Jan~
I got my newsletter yesterday...FINALLY!! ;D ;D
Now I can read the rest of it!
K
-
Wow, K. I didn't realize you were still waiting also
Where did they mail these things from China ???
It's a great issue - enjoy :)
Jan
-
Oh, thanks, Jan. Rub it in. I STILL didn't get mine.
I better get busy writing my own version.
Lori
-
Make sure you include an article called "Ice cream can cure just about anything" ;)
Jan

Lori
As a writer I'll get you started on your own version of a newsletter.
Once upon a time, I received the ANA Newsletter. I was happy. I was connected. I felt one with the family. Then suddenly something sinister happened. My mailbox was empty. I made jokes about it at first. People laughed. But in my heart I knew there was something wrong. Could it be that my secret CIA life was revealed and THEY were out to get me? Or could it be that somehow that unpaid parking ticket had reached the offices of the ANA? Or could it be the mailman who seeks to alieanate me from the world I know? He does look at me in a funny sort of way. Come to think of it, everyone looks at me in a funny sort of way. Like they know something. They couldn't possibly know. I lie awake at night listening to the sounds. The breeze is deafening. I reach beneath my pillow and feel the safety of the cold metal Magnum. I hope I will never have to use it. But I am ready. They don't know the Lori they are dealing with. Heck, after reading what I just wrote, I don't know the Lori I'm dealing with.
So, Lori, I hope this gives you a start on your own ANA Newletter. I think it will give some real insight into the stuff we deal with. ;D
David (writing safely from the ANA Forum basement)

David~
And I always thought that people looked at me funny because my face just didn't quite look like theirs...
K ;D
-
David -
I LOVE IT! I can't wait to see what I do next!!
Lori
p.s. I wonder how they found out about that parking ticket? They can't expect an AN patient to parallel park!!!!
-
Very intriguing newsletter, David, do go on - I'm curious to see where this all ends.
And let me just say, I always knew Lori had a hidden past ;)
Jan
-
Lori~
I just want y'all to know that I am the QUEEN OF PARALLEL PARKING and with my mini-van too. It's the little things that make me so happy - I am sure there is a huge grin on my face everytime I whip it in perfectly!! ;D
K ;D
-
That is amazing, Queen K ;D
Seriously. I find that at times I'm still having issues backing out of my driveway without running over the neighbor's grass down by the street :P
I also still routinely park my car in a parking lot and notice when I exit it that I'm not between the lines ::)
I've definitely improved since my surgery 16 months ago, but I still need even more improvement.

Lori
This is your newsletter. I just gave you a headstart. Although there is that guy in the Hawaiian shirt that somehow finds his way into the shadows and seems disinterested in your life, but he is always there. You even saw him in Nashville but it didn't register that he is the same one that you saw talking to the mailman at home. Yep, I'd say there is something very suspicious about not receiving that newsletter. But you'll fool everybody with your own newsletter. I'll be glad to write a column for you. I think you should call it The Real ANA Newsletter That Gets Delivered (just kidding Judy).
*David whispers something to Lori*. What? Now don't smack me, Phyl. I am very sensitive. I don't sleep well after a smack. *David whispers something else to Lori. They titter. David wanders off to his next post.*
-
David -
I hope you remembered to whisper in Lori's "good" ear - or you'll leave her wondering what you just said ;)
Personally I think Lori's puppy ate her newsletter before she even got a chance to see it.
Jan
-
Wait a minute.. it's all coming together now.... the man in the Hawaiian shirt is James! We are Parrot Heads, after all... we have a lotta Hawaiian shirts.... He does always seem to be hanging around here, and I'm pretty sure I saw him talking to the mail man one afternoon. And now I know the reason he nevers listens to me is because he's disinterested in my life. I should have seen it.
He probably took the newsletter from the mailman and fed it to my dog. She has a hard time getting the mailbox open, what with her lack of thumbs...
Lori
-
Lori~
I just ordered Dave a new JB "Camp Shirt" for his birthday - can't wait to get it - hope it gets here in time!!
K
-
Don't give up hope, Lori! I got my newsletter today. Of course, in your case the dog may have eaten it.
-
Note to Lori -
if you didn't want James hanging around you probably shouldn't have married him :D
K -
outstanding gift choice; Dave is sure to love it. Add a 6-pack of Land Shark and he's all set ;)
David -
I thought Lori was the last one waiting for her newsletter ??? Since you're one of the "stars" of this issue, I would have thought you'd be among the first to get yours.
Jan
-
Still didn't get mine.... you know what... forget it... I don't even want it anymore. Hmmmppffff! >:(
Jan... now you tell me. ::)
Lori

Jan... now you tell me. ::)
Yea, hindsight's 20/20 :D
