Title: Wendy's Surgery Update
Post by: Debbi on July 25, 2008, 10:03:53 am
Greetings, All-

Wendy was admitted right on schedule this morning and went into the OR at 8:15.  As of a few minutes ago, she was still in surgery.  Rob's been sending me email updates regularly, so expect to hear from him as soon as she is out of surgery.  Keep all the good thoughts and prayers headed Wendy's way!

Debbi, Wendy's Press Secretary

Quick update from Rob - Wendy is still in surgery.  They are in the process of removing the tumor now.  So far, so good.

Wendy was out of surgery by 3:30, but Rob and family weren't going to be able to see her for a couple of hours.  Early word from Rob is that the surgery went very well and they got all of the tumor. He should be in seeing her right now, so I expect an update soon!

Go Wendy!!!!

Stay tuned ...

Thanks for the update, Debbi, hope you hear more shortly.

I just got a text from Rob!  He said that Wendy is doing fine "except for being quite puffy looking and tired."   He said he made her smile (what a guy!) and her smile and face both look fine - wahoo!  I know she was worried about that, so I am especially glad to hear that her facial nerve seems to be in good order.

I was telling Kathleen that when I talked to Wendy last night, she told me that she had packed not one, but TWO pairs of pajamas (!!) for her hospital stay.  We had quite a long laugh about that!   ;D

Rob said that Wendy is settled into ICU for the night, and he is on his way home (probably for some much-needed rest).  He'll update me tomorrow - and of course, I'll update everyone here accordingly.

This is a very good way to end the week!!

Debbi, relieved in NJ...

Debbi -

this IS a good way to end the week.  Actually it's been a very good week - AN wise; Anne Marie, Marci and Wendy all did very well  ;D

Rob's report on Wendy sounds very encouraging.

Thanks for filling us in.

Debbi

What wonderful news from Rob!  I am so relieved and so happy for her successful surgery and recovery.  I think I am next on the surgery docket and am grasping at every bit of positive news I can get.  I am so proud of all of you who have gone before me, that you have gotten through these final days of pre-surgery.  I am leaving Denver on Monday for House in LA to go through pre-op on Tuesday and surgery on Wednesday.  I love reading about Wendy's success and that helps get me through the night.  (I am not sleeping much at night....but my closets have NEVER been cleaner!)  I know the first day post-surgery is the toughest, and I will pray she gets the sleep, recovery and rest she needs to be back to everything she wants to do.

Thanks to all for making this such an incredible forum!

Debbi - Thanks for the updates!  Great news to hear Wendy is doing well.  Of course, we all knew she would!  Tell Rob to pass along my good wishes for a speedy recovery!

And Kathleen, if you need some more closets to clean, I have a few that should help you burn off some of that nervous energy!  You may not get through all of them before surgery time though!   :D

Wendy,

Read your post surgery report from Debbi and I would like you to know how happy I am to hear your good news!  Very glad it's over for you, well the toughest part at least and that you are now on the road to recovery.  I know with the help of your hubby you will be doing just fine from here on out!  Big hugs and lots of joy to you and your family!

Good morning, forumites!

I just sent Rob an email with all the greetings and well-wishes from you all - I know this will cheer her up.  And, Jan and Lori, I told her that there was a slight hi-jack attempt on the thread, but that it was thwarted!   ;D ;D  I know she'll laugh about that!

I'll let you all know when I get any further news.  Meanwhile, hope everyone's having a good weekend.  Kathleen, breathe!

Debbi:

Thanks for the updates and of course, my congratulations to Wendy on her successful surgery with apparently no facial complications.  I'm so happy for her!  :)  Tell Rob to tell Wendy she's officially a 'postie' now and we're looking forward to seeing her post again as soon as she's able.  For now, Wendy needs rest, TLC and more rest.

I came late to the thread but Wendy's good news has brightened my whole day!  Thanks.

Hi All-

Just got the following text message from Rob, obviously dictated by none other than our intrepid Wendy!!

"hi . I feel good. I think I had the perfect outcome I knew I would. No dizzness no facial problems. "

I don't know if I'll hear anymore from Rob today, but I am delighted to hear that Wendy seems to be having a terrific outcome.  I believe I'll have a nice glass of wine  :D tonight to celebrate Wendy's good news - she, of course, will be having a pharmaceutical cocktail.  :-\

Great news from Debbi about Wendy.  Debbie and I had the chance to talk on the phone today, and I have been challenged to keep up the "excellent results" from the past week's team---Marci, Anne Marie and Wendy.  I love a challenge and will do everything in my power to deliver an excellent outcome from my Translab surgery on Wednesday.  Wouldn't want to bring the results for the group down!

Wendy, rest, sleep, recover and relax.  I am so very happy for you with your outcome.

All the best,

Kathleen

Thrilled to hear Wendy is doing well.  I was confident things would go well for her  8)

I don't recall hijacking this thread, do you Lori  ???  Why, Debbi, whatever do you mean  ???  It sounds like you aren't appreciating Lori's and my humor.  Maybe we'll just have to take it to another forum that will appreciate it - and not pick on us unnecessarily  ;)

I'll be the oldest (wisest) triplet; and K, you are right, Lori will be the difficult middle-child.

Ha, ha, Jan!!   :-X  I've got my eye on your, girl!   ;)

Got an email from Rob late last night with a bunch of pictures.   She looks GREAT!  In fact, I would go so far as to say she looks amazing.  I sent Rob a quick text this morning to ask if it is okay for me to post some of the pics (want to make sure Wendy's okay with it)   Stay tuned - hopefully I'll get a thumbs up" today.

She's even wearing her bunny slippers and the lucky scarf and is all snuggled in with her home-made pillow case - with a great big, non-crooked smile!!

What a great way to start the day.

Wow Wendy.  I think you definitely have the BEST post op pics I've ever seen.  My smile is almost back to normal but I definitely didn't look that great so soon after surgery.  I agree with Lori that everyone needs some bunny slippers.  Kathleen you may want to get a pair before Wednesday. Plus, I love the scarf.  A much better look than my do-rag

Sorry, I'm late today - was shopping for school supplies (yes, school starts on August 21   :o ), then took down the trampoline and put up a volleyball net.  My weekends are just too strenuous lately; can't wait to go back to work tomorrow   :D

But enough about me . . .

Wendy -

what a great idea to add you to our little comedy group; as David suggested we can call ourselves the Marx sisters.  I have to warn you though, we're going to make a very unlikely set of quadruplets.  K is blonde, Lori has brown hair, I have brown hair that is rapidly turning gray.  Plus, Lori is short and young, I am tall and old (or so Lori likes to tell me), and I can't speak for K (although I know she's younger than I am), etc.

You are one heck of an AN warrior!  And you are true to your word - a bunny slippers and a scarf picture!  ;D  You look fantastic - I don't think I even had both of my eyes opened this soon after surgery.  In fact, at this point in my recovery, I think I was only looking at everybody with one eye open due to my double-vision.

It sounds like you will be home soon and from there I think your recovery will get even faster - if that's possible.  There's no place like home  ;)

Lori -

great idea on Steve knitting slippers - we needed something to complete our "gift packs".  I'm thinking slippers will be just the right touch.

Debbi -

thanks for being an exceptional press secretary.

You go girl!!  Whoo-Hoo for you!!  And of course, you should be part of the multiple birth sisters!!!  I guess Lori & I are the TRUE twins since we both have funny looking faces - I bet our parents love us best!!!!  I am 5'7" (& a half) and TRYING to get back into shape again after not being able to work out after theT3.  I did make it to the gym all 4 mornings last week (I don't even attempt to go on Fridays).  I go at 6:30 now b/c there is NO reason for me to go at 5:15 when the girlies aren't in school!  Ok, you don't really care about that but keep up the good work!!

Alright, if there's a funny-face club, I should also be a member!

Jan, you are a mind-reader!  Wendy and I discussed that the scarf would be hers to pass on to some other AN patient when the time is right.  Be fun to see where it ends up!

Wendy, hope you get home from the hospital today - I'm keeping fingers crossed!

Oh, I can't wait for the next MAN to have surgery and receive the official AN scarf!  Now those should be good pictures.

K - I'm sure we are the family favorites.  You know how those older siblings can be - just trouble-makers.    And you can exercise at 5:15 am?  I can't even figure out how to turn off the alarm clock that early.

Wendy is apparently doing quite well if she can not only SEE the blackberry - but also figure out how to use it.  I had a hard enough time trying to work James' laptop after my surgery.  Debbi - didn't you say you needed some blackberry lessons?  I think I found you a teacher.

Hi all
It seems like my adventure here may not be over. The physical therapist wants me to stay for a few more days. She says my balance issues need intense therapy. Its kind of disappointing since I was all set to go home. That might still happen though if my insurance 0ompany says I can't stay. Steve - you'd better start knitting bunny slippers!  Thanks to all of you, especially my faithfuk press secretary, debbi!  Kathleen, I'm sending you good thoughts and wishes. I use a travel Shake-Awake and you have to open a little cover thing to turn it off - some days I can't it get found under my pillow and turned off!!  Today I got up but it was raining so I went back to bed - then I couldn't go back to sleep AND it stopped raining!  I felt guilty, but then I got up & started to look on line trying to find a Wii Fit for Emee's b-day.  Anybody have any ideas??  How's that for highjacking??

K - It's not really a total hijacking - Wendy can probably benefit from a Wii fit for her balance problems.   ;)

Wendy - hang in there.  Your balance will get better eventually.  Keep working at it and you'll be outta there in no time.  And always listen to your PT!   ;D

K - Toys R Us had the Wii Fit about 2 weeks ago when I was there.  Have you tried that?  I know Target has been out of them for a while.

Hang in there!  :-*  Didn't realize your balance was that bad - but hopefully you'll regain it quickly.  Were you noticing any balance problems before surgery?  If not, it may be that your brain is in overdrive right now trying to adjust.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that this goes away FAST!  What does your doc say?

That sounds like good logic to me - that way you can get started on exercises NOW.  I think that was part of my problem - they didn't even put me in ANY kind of rehab for over a month even though I was VERY bad off!!  I think I would have recovered quicker if I had been able to do more SOONER!

K
Title: Re: Wendy's Surgery Update

Wendy -

don't be too disappointed.  You were set to be released in record time and if nothing else, IMO they should keep you a day or two more to make sure everything is okay.  I know you're anxious to get home, but you want to be in the best possible shape when you get there.  Balance issues aren't easy and it's important that the doc is certain you are "good to go" before he lets you go  ;)

K -

have you looked on craigslist?  That's how I sold my trampoline this weekend.  I know you're looking for a fairly new product, but maybe someone bought one that they are less than happy with and they now want to get rid of it.

And, Lori - I rolled over in bed today about 5:15 a.m.  Think I'm ready to exercise with K?

Yes, knit scarves.  Steve could use heavy weight yarn for the winter surgeries, and maybe a lighter weight for summer - in pastels.

Wendy - I think you should be glad your surgery is over with - there's no telling what these knit scarves will look like since Steve will be rushing to get them done - along with the hats and slippers.

Wendy--

Sorry I'm so late in wishing you CONGRATS on coming safely through surgery, and on doing so well! You look absolutely fantastic (and I'm thrilled to see the fabled bunny slippers at last...)--I'm so glad you have no facial issues or dizziness, and am impressed beyond belief that you sent your OWN message from the hospital! Wow!

Though I'm sorry to hear you need to stay longer due to your balance issues, I'm rooting for each day to find you more a bit more comfortable.

Healing vibes being beamed your way--
Carrie

I'm back again ... and I've got another picture, just received from Rob, the offical AN photographer!

And, this is Rob's caption, which really made me chuckle...   ;D

"Here is the whole enchilada.. Bunny slippers , scarf and whatever else - Im not sure if the robe has magical powers also...."

Personally, Wendy, I'd keep Debbi's scarf and your very own bunny slippers.

While Steve keeps promising us "knitted goodies", I don't even think he knows how to knit  :o

BTW, great picture - looking good  ;)

Hi all!!!
I finally got home yesterday afternoon about 3:30.  I am so relieved to be here and thank alll of you for all your messages and good wishes.  I'm sure one of the reasons things went so well was because I had so many people pulling for me!  Rehab was not all it was cracked up to be and I actually ended up waiting for two days for a bed and only getting about 1 1/2 hours of rehab at Mt. Sinai.  I'm planning to find a good center here on Staten Island, and I understand there are quite a few of them here.  I went for my first post-op checkup today and the wonderful Dr. Choe told me he ia extremely happy witht how well I am doing.  I am doing really well and only have a very slight weakness in my right eye, which Dr. Choe said looked even better today. He feels certain it will be gone in a month or less.  I think he deserves much of the credit for that but he also told me my strenghth and positive attitude also contributed a lot to my outcome  I think much of the credit for that goes to yoiu my AN family.  You stood by me, made me laugh, listened to me complain,  helped calm my fears  and helped guide me through this propcess and I will be eternally grateful for that.  I hope in some way I have helped some of you and will continue to do my best to do so.

Debbi - Thank you again for doing such a great job of keeping everyone updated.  I know everyone is always anxious to know how surgery has gone for each of us and you certainly did  a wonderfful job. I 'm also glad everyone liked the pics. Rob was a very good photographer and very cooperative about forwarding them to Debbi for posting!

My bunny slippers were a source of laughter and fun to me and the hospital staff and other patients and visitors.  They really helped keep my spirits up and I highly recommend bunny slippers to everyone (I would share mine but they are quite old (about 25 years old actually) and fragile and have a great deal of sentimental value to me.)   The magic scarf bestowed upon me by my excellent press secretary Debbi will be passed on to bring luck to someone in the near future.  I have to check the calendar and see who has surgery coming up and is interested and then determine how quickly I can get it to them.    I think Steve -- Maybe you should buy a knitting machine so you can knit everyone a pair of bunny slippers, or maybe he should hire some helpers (hmmm -- Steve I guess you should use pink and white for the women and blue and white for the men --  or for a good laugh, maybe the other way around.  I think real men can wear bunny slippers!!!   I'm sure Phyl could pay for it out of the moderators discretionary fund!!

To my fellow quadruplets -- I guess Jan and I are the oldest, or I guess that's about right and I think we might also be the tallest.  I remember Jan saying she is 5'10" and I am 5'8" and we both have brown hair.  Jan -- Just so I know how much we look alike, my eyes are hazel what color are yours?  It's okay if K and Lori are the little sisters.  It just means now there are two older sisters to boss them around!!! After that's what big sisters are for!   No back talk Lori -- you are the youngest aren't you -- or is that K?

My thanks again to everyone,
Wendy

Wendy,

Glad to hear you are home. I am hoping that you won't credit the bunny slippers too much; the prospect of knitting some for everyone is daunting.  :P

It sounds like you have come through in great shape. Just remember to take it easy now, and recuperate gently for a while.

Maybe you would like to do a little knitting while you wait?   ::)

Wendy -

It's fantastic to have you back!  :D  And in such great shape, too!  I'm so glad we could be here to support you during your AN journey - I know from experience it makes all the difference in the world.

You and I will be the tall quadruplets - Lori is definitely a short one, and I'm not too sure about Kay.  Lori is the youngest I believe, although I know Kay is younger than I am.  Although Lori will tell you I'm "ancient" - I'm only 46 1/2  ::)

As for my eyes - they are very light blue, but change to green depending on what I wear.

Being #4 out of 5 children in "real life", I'd love to boss someone around - other than my kids  ;D  I'm definitely up to that job!

Sister Jan

It would appear I am the first-born of our quadruplet group since I just turned 55 (yikes -that sounds old when I write it down but doesn't feel it.  I'd like to think I look good for my age -- you can lie if you have to, but I'd appreciate it if you agreed, ha ha!) ) exactly one week before my surgery.  I am #5  of nine (gasp!! the dreaded middle child too -- who siad that?) children  and have had lots of experience being bossed around and doing some bossing myself.  If you need help asserting your authority with our younger siblings, I'm here to help!!

Mindy,
Thanks for the welcome home and I'm glad you liked the pics!  I'm really feeling pretty good except for the frequent headaches everyone seems to experience and a bad back.  Hopefully a few nights in my own bed will take care of my back anyway.  In the meantime, if anyone else has this problem I highly recomment Thermacare Heat pads.  They work wonders!!

Brian -
Thanks for the welcome back too.  I am anxious to get better but have learned from all of you that paiientce is a virtue we should all try to practice.  I am enjoying my leisure from household duties as much as I can (I put my kids to work today) and since I never heard of the AN clause about never having to do housework again (I think Jan or Lor mentioned this clause in another thread), am wondering how I can best break this news to my husband and kids once I have them trained!! It sounds like a great perk that we all deserve!

Looking forward to some pampering,
Wendy

Wendy,

Welcome home and very happy to hear of your great success in healing.  Yes, patience is a lesson we all learn or re-learn and the housework thing?!  well I milked that one for a year by having a cleaning team come in.  What a treat!  Love your slippers I'm sure they were a big part of your attitude towards healing!  Good news Wendy and may you continue to heal quickly.

Wendy -

you definitely don't look your age - no lie involved.  I would have put you closer to mine.  Perhaps those bunny slippers and that fashionable scarf took away a few years.  I'm not next in line for AN surgery, but maybe you could send them to me when you're done with them  ;)

Yes, you should lay off the housework for a while - forever if you can manage it  ;) - besides that's what childen and husbands are for.  I'm sure Lori would agree!

Eight siblings!  I should tell my daughter that.  She's always complaining about her one brother - it seems he's "so annoying"  :D

My dad is one of 14 (7 boys and 7 girls) although I don't know where he falls in the birth order.  His mother had 2 miscarriages during his childhood, so he could have been one of 16  :o  This was back in the good old days, way before epidurals!  YIKES!!!

Wendy - I got so excited to see you back, that I posted a welcome back to you on my thread!  (Duh!)  I actaully got a little worried on Thursday and sent Rob a message to make sure you were okay - so I am SOOOO happy to see you back!

I have no doubt that your great attitude and general good health helped you get through this in such fine shape (of course, great surgeons get some of the credit, too  ;)).  I couldn't get over how alert and good you looked in the pictures that Rob sent - wow!  And, btw, I would NEVER have guessed you to be 55!  You look amazing - and that's straight from the heart from one "over 50" to another!!  8)

Just make sure you continue to get lots of rest and let everyone wait on you hand and foot, okay?  I'll try to call you this week.

Big hugs,

Arushi -
Thanks for your good wishes and yes I know patience, patience, patience is the key --  I will do my best not to try to rush through recovery -- hey, that rhymes!  Seriously though I know the support I got from all of you was key in my great outcome.  Thanks again!!

Jan -- Thanks for  saying I look so young -- actually my kids tell all their friends I'm 37 (it starrted by them turning my age around when I was 53 and they have just aged me one year for the past two years.  I don't mean to sound vain but I do think I can pass for being in my mid-forties -- as long as my gray doesn't show anyway.  No wrinkles  yet!

Debbi - Thank you too!  You certainly don't look like you're past your early to mid-forties either.  Maybe you should turn your age around too if it works to your benefit!  As for welcoming me back on your own thread, you can welcome me back as many times as you want to -- it's great to be back and on the mend!  If  the backaches would stop; -- these are my major complaint because they just make everything else feel mangified, I would feel a lot better.  I see what everyone means about the fatigue.  I've always slept a lot when I'm sick but I've never been this tired on a constant basis.  Today is the longest I've been awake in a single stretch and I think it was only for about 8 hours, then I slept 2 hours got up at 7:00  and I'm almost ready for bed again.  I guess I'll certainly be getting my beauty sleep, haha.  One upside the hospital experience is that I lost another 10 pounds thanks to the wonderful (yuck!!!) food there.  I have been eating though -- I don't want you to think I've been starving myself.  My stay shrank my appetiite and I'm encouraging it to stay that way.  I see why you ate lots of veggies in the hospital -- they taste better and are better pepared than anything else.  This is a habit I plan to continue.  The only food that tasted better than the veggies was the ice cream.  The nurses on the surgical floor found out how much I liked it and made sure I got it every night whether I was supposed to or not, bless their hearts!

Wendy - Welcome home!  And welcome home to the bunnies too.

As much as I enjoy being the youngest (I'm the youngest of 4 in real life), I guess I'd have to admit that Kay gets that place of honor.   :(  But I'm pretty sure she's catching up to me.  And no wrinkles here yet either - definitely the plus side to the facial nerve issues!  Now if I could only paralyze the part that makes the hair turn grey...

You really sound like you're doing well and I hope your recovery continues to go well.  Definitely steer clear of the housework though - this may be the only time you get an excuse to avoid it!  Don't let the opportunity pass you by!  Although I guess I shouldn't talk because the day I came home from the hospital, the first thing I did was attack the kitchen counters with bleach.  After that I went right up to bed though!   ;D

Go rest!!

Hi all,
Sorry my posting has been so irratic -- these darned backaches have been keeping me away from the computer.  My sister lent me her electric body massager and Dr. Choe suggested the Chinese char massagers they have in the malls.  Truly a man after my own heart to suggest a trip to the mall.  Toimorrow I am going to start checking out physicla therapy facilities in my area and hope I can start soon.  I'm sure it will help everything including my back, which has just been killing me.  I just can't get comfortable which is why I am up at this ungodly hour.  I am doing everything I can to avoid housework and have been teaching the kids to do laundry and vacuuming.  I can get them to fold all the clothes, which at this point still seems like fun to them -- I'm sure this won't last long, getting them to put everything away is another subject though.  Luckily, they also seem to enjoy Swiffering  Yesterday was my oldest daughter's birthday and we had our first outing to a restaurant since I've been home.  Since I am now completely SSD it was not hte best experience I've ever had.  The restaurant seemed very noisy to me, although Rob and the girls thought it was pretty quiet compared to most restaurants.  I can see this is going to take some getting used to.  I have to say the girls were a great help.  The restaurant had a salad bar which presented me mwith a unique problem -- I really need my cane to keep from walking into things and carrying a plate, using a cane and doing the self-serve thing wer a challenge.  The girls solved the problem for me by taking my plate and just having me point at the things I wanted and getting them for me.  Do I have great kids or what?  Good thing too, since at one point I wasn't paying close enough attention to where I was going and almost tripped over the  lady in front of me.  It actually looked like a comedy routine, but I guess you would have had to be there to apprecite it.

That's about it for now.  I will check on as many of you as I can until my back demands that I lay down again.  Hope you are all doing great.

Wendy

Wow, Wendy, you went out to eat?  I'm scared to death to do that.  I keep spilling food on my numb chin and though I'm not SSD, something is definitely wonky with my hearing that wasn't there before surgery so noise has been a problem.  It's funny to feel like you've lost hearing and yet things seem noisy, but when my dogs bark I have to cover my AN ear.  Perhaps we'll venture out to eat tomorrow after my doctor's appointment.  You give me courage....

Wow you went out to eat already!?  Proud of you and it will only get better from here on out even though your hearing is more sensitive, with the balance not there yet.  Hope you are doing vestibular exercises as they really do help and try using an ear plug (I have muscician's earplug) in restaurants as it cuts out most of the background noise making it a little easier to hear those at the table.  I remember all of what you are going through and trust me it does get better as long as you continue to push your limits like you are!

I have posted balance exercises along with a few other people (names escape me) and many of us practice Tai Chi or yoga for better balance too!  Hope you are feeling good today!

So proud of you for going out to eat.  My doctor always told me that the more "normal" things I would do, the better I would get.  Of course, not all in one day - I think he just really wanted me to get out & try things.  I would then come home & nap, but I did LOTS of stuff.  The main thing that I did was go to my friend's son's HS basketball games - I remember climbing all those steps of the bleachers each time with David on one side and my Daddy on the other!
Keep up the good work - hope the headaches get better.

Wendy-

Good for you for going out to eat already!  Yes, it does feel weird, and a bit scary, doesn't it?  It does get easier, though, I promise.  I think that part of what is going on right now is that your brain is trying to compensate for a lot of "new" things and that makes the background noise in public places harder to cope with.  The first few times I went out were not pleasant, but now I am surprised at how well I do in restaurants.  Give yourself some time to adjust to everything.  Also, since you are having some balance challenges, your brain is working overtime right now!

I hope you find a good place for vestibular rehab - that should make a big difference.  Although I have "wobbly" days, my balance has never been really bad so I can only imagine how frustrating it is.

However, trust you to put a positive spin on it by staging your own comedy routine in the buffet line, Wendy!   ;D  You rock!

Debbi (and, can you send your daughters over here to fold my laundry?)  ;)

It's amazing what kids will find entertaining, if only for a short time.  My two little ones love to clean windows.  Granted, only the bottom part gets clean, but coincidentally, that's the only part that usually gets really dirty.  Odd, huh?   :D  And they love the Swiffer too.  I wonder if the person who created that thing ever imagined it would be used as a toy?

I went out to a restaurant at about 2 weeks post-op.  It was to a place called the Rainforest Cafe.  I don't know if any of you have been there, but it's dark, noisy, crowded... all bad things for a newly SSD person with eye gel in her eye and balance issues.  Needless to say, I haven't been back there since.  Wendy, I give you a lot of credit for even attempting the buffet line!  I'll bet that lady you almost fell over kept her distance the rest of the time there, huh?

Wendy -

kudos to you!  Getting the kids to do housework AND going out to eat - truly wonderful events  ;D

Lori -

Rainforest Cafe.  Know it well - pricey but fun - one of my kids' favorite places!  In fact, I'm a member (please ooh and ahh accordingly).  There are actually 2 Rainforests near me - one at a huge suburban mall and one in downtown Chicago.  If you want to relive that wonderful, dark, noisy, crowded restaurant experience, we can go during the 2009 ANA Symposium.  We can even take sister Wendy and sister Kay - sounds like a couple of nuns LOL

There is a Rainforest at the Mall of America too.          Same scenario with the thunder and misty rain.        My girls don't go with us anymore  the occ time we do make it up there so don't have to go to it anymore.     My thrill is the Ikea just north of the mall now.

Hi all,
Yes I not only rested but went out like a light last night until about 4:30 or so this morning anyway.  My niece and her little boy (three years old) came over to visit today.  He really wore me out.  He's just adorable but has too much energy for me right now.  Thanks to my niece Debbi's magic AN scarf is on its way to Sue, who is having surgery on Wednesday.  I hope it gets there before she leaves for the hospital but her daughter will bring it to her if it doesn't.  UPS wanted $36 for overnight service so I had to settle for two day delivery.  She sent me an e-mail and is really looking forward to receiving it so I hope it brings her all the good fortune our wishes have invested in it.  Thanks to Debbi for coming up with this great idea!   I have written more detail under the topic "The AN magical scarf"

Sue, if you are reading this post my niece put a short note dictated by me since I forgot to send the one I wrote myself.  As I've said, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Last night's outing did seem like one of the small victories we all talk about and when I thought about the woman I almost tripped over it did seem funnier in retrospect (how's that for a big word - count 'em three syllables!).  I didn't get to go out today since my niece came over but will be checking out  physical therapy facilities tomorrow for sure -- my sister promised to drive so there will be no more delays.  My back is feeling a little better this afternoon too, so I have something else to be thankful for.  Ans really do make you count your blessings.  Now, if I can just get the kids to learn how to cook without burning down the house things will be even better -- or maybe I should settle ffor something a littlke easier -- I'll have to give this some more thought.  Any ideas are welcome!

Ha - has anyone ever tried to potty train a spider?????  They can outrun nearly anything...

Wendy, I personally like pizza as on option (even though I have to cut it into bites, which is totally un-Italian and un- NewJersey).  Easier on the house, too.

I am so glad the Magical Scarf is on it's way to another an-er - let's hope it continues to bring good luck to any head it touches!  And, yes, let's make sure it gets to a guy eventually - good for photo ops...

Wendy,
Thanks to you, I went out today with my husband to run errands.  I'm a little self-conscious about my scar but decided to hell with that and so I went.  It felt so NORMAL.
Thanks Wendy,

Wendy -

I'm with Debbi.  Cooking, hell.  Order pizza!

Lori -

Lysol wipes on a dog  :P  Loved the spider potty training idea, though.  Just where do you come up with this stuff?  :D

Hi all,
I decided to let my fingers do the walking one more time regarding physical therapists.  I's amazing how many of them have never heard of vestibular rehabilitation, but then again they didn't know what an acoustic neuroma/vestibular schwannoma was either, so I guess it makes sense.  I finally found three facilities and went to check them out yesterday afternoon.  Two were in hospitals and the other was privately owned.  Not surprisingly, I decided on the privately owned facility.  The hospitals disappointed me again by treating me like an invalid (Ireally hate that) when all I have is a balance problem.  I really liked the owner of the privately owned facility (he will be my PT).  i told him point blank that I'm not an invalid and don't want to be traeted like one.  He agreed and siad he will push me as hard as he can.  I liked that.  I want to get better not be coddled.  My first session is next Tuesday and I am very excited.  I was glad to find that I didn't have to wait very long.  The PTs at Mt. Sinai made it sound like it would be weeks before I would get an appointment the outside.

In the meantime, my backaches continue to plague me.  Has anyone else had this problem?  They are not quite as bad as they were but I find I can't sit or stand for very long without it becomming fairly painful.  Dr. Choe's suggestion about the Chinese massage chairs has helped  short term and gotten me out of the house a couple of times but I am still having considerable pain.  Maybe the PT will help that too.

Hope you are all well,

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I get the headaches when I'm in one position for too long, such as when I'm asleep in bed. I have to apply heat to my neck and take tylenol, and after 30 mins or so I'm back in bed. The headaches also strike when I strain my neck, such as when I bend over to pick up a pencil from the floor. Dr tells me it's too soon to tell if they'll be temporary or permanent. I guess in 10 years, if I still have the headaches, I can assume they'll be permanent.

Wendy,

You're a brave woman asking a PT to push you as hard as he can!   I know when I was still working, if I had a patient say that to me, I'd gladly oblige and then I'd get all the usual PT jokes - like being called a Physical Terrorist or "What does PT stand for?  Pain and Torture".

I'm shocked that the other places didn't know about vestibular therapy.  They do teach you that in PT school - it's just possible they called it something else - like just balance therapy or something.  Still, they should have known what you were talking about.

Anyway, I'd talk to him about the backaches while you're there.  Could be just a matter of doing some simple stretches to get things back where they need to be and strengthen the correct muscles.  Does walking help?  You get double duty with that - could help the pain and it also helps with balance.

Thanks Ssyl and Lori -
Yes, I'd say if you sitll have headaches in ten years they're permanent  Syl.  I hope you don't mind my asking but should you be bending over yet?  How long has it been since your surgery, I've lost track.  I know it's almost impossible not to bend, I've stopped myself midway about a million times, or that's how it seems.  Hope your headaches go away sooner than later.

Lori,  Thanks for making me laugh, as always.  I did plan to tell the PT about my backaches next week because I thought he might be able to help.  I know I'm probably asking to be tortured by saying I want him to push me but although I preach patience it is not a virtue I find easy.  I want to get better ASAP.  In the meantime I had a scare this morning.  While I was cooking breakfast (I thought the girls deserved a treat so I made pancakes) I felt something running down my neck.  I have a bloody discharge (sorry if this is too graphic) coming from my incusion.  My nex- door neighbor is a nurse and luckily was home.  She said I have a tiny (she said one cm but I thiink maybe she meant 1 mm) opening at the bottom of my inciision.  I am leaving to see Dr. Choe in a few minutes, just waiting for Rob to get home.  Hopefully this will turn out to be nothing more than one of the bumps people often run into along the road to recovery.  I was feeling a little panicked but between writing to you and knowing I'll be seeing Dr. Choe soon, I've calmed down.  I'll  keep you posted.

Hoping for good news from Dr. Choe,
Wendy

Wendy - I'm glad that you are consulting your doctor about the incision.  Perhaps it wasn't healed all the way before they took the sutures / staples out and something made it "pop open" a little?  Regardless, you need to have it looked at by your doctor..that's good that you are doing that.  I never had severe back pain, so I can't help much there.  I do know that the less it's being used, the longer it will hurt.  So, perhaps 'stretching it out' will help.  Tylenol or something like that may help you to do that.  PT, as well, should help.   You are doing the right things.

Syl - About headaches.  I had a few post-surgery but they were primarily having to do with the CSF build up under my skin near the incision (which is still there but going down slowly btw).  When I was having the reaction to the diamox I was on, they were much worse and lasted longer.  Your body is still healing from the surgery, so I wouldn't be concerned at this point that they are permanent, but I would keep an eye on them for sure.  Also, if you have any swelling near the incision, maybe talk to the doctor about the possibility of CSF build-up that is causing the headaches and potentially going on something like diamox to relive the swelling.  Just my $0.02.. take it for what it's worth.  ;)

Wendy: My surgery was 7 wks ago. Since I was never prohibited from bending over, I do it when I need to. But it is getting easier on my neck. It doesn't strain so easily anymore so the headaches causes by the strain of movement are diminishing in frequency. It's the ones that wake me up at 3 or 4 am that occurr regularly.

Pooter: Thanks for your $0.02. I don't notice any swelling near the incision, so I don't think that's the cause of the headaches. They tend to start at the center of the back of my neck, away from the incision.

EEK - Wendy, what did the doctor say????

I started feeling panicky the minute I read your post - it reminded me of when we discovered my incision leaking at 10 one night.  I am keeping everything crossed that it is not an infection, CSF leak or anyting else that would slow you down.  Please let me know what they say, okay.

Debbi, everything crossed

O.K.  You scared a lot of us with your account of the incision leak.  I trust it wasn't serious but inquiring minds want to know for sure.  Please tell us.  We care.  :)

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice on backaches  I guess stretching is not bending so I've started doing that.  Hopefully that will help.  Thankfully, Dr. Choe said the drainage is just some viscoius fluid and  shows no sign of infection and is not a CSF leak.  Just to be on the safe side I am on a ten day course of Cephalexin, an antibiotic for bacterial infections.  As I hoped, this appears not to be anything to worry about.  Thank goodness for small favors.  Once this is over I hope not to need so much as an aspirin for a while.  I hate taking pills but will do what I must.  Right now I feel incredibly lucky again like I dodged somethng worse.  It must be the after effects of the lucky AN scarf!

Wendy -

first of all, glad it wasn't a CSF leak  :)  second of all, sorry you're in pain - hope the PT helps  ;D  third, I'm quite surprised your doctor(s) didn't recommend someone for the PT  :o  Or did he/they and I just missed that part  ???

I'm enjoying playing with the little smiley guys today, can you tell  :D

My doctor gave me some vestibular exercises to do pre op and I continued to do them post op - they helped a lot.  Post op he offered to send me to a PT for vestibular therapy, but I told him I'd wing it and continue to do the exercises on my own.

Lori -

as usual, you're a scream  ;D  Physical Terrorist and Pain & Torture LOL

BTW, anyone "wiped" off the dog today?

Wendy - good news!  I think the antibiotics are a good idea - just in case.  Better not make any pancakes any time soon.  Sounds dangerous.   :D

Jan, as a matter of fact, I don't believe the dogs have been Lysol-ed yet.  Darn kids are slipping!  They did get Furminated yesterday (the dogs, not the kids) - I guess that counts for something.

Wendy:

Thanks for the update.  Glad the incision leak wasn't CSF.  I agree with Lori, the antibiotics are a prudent move.  As another person who doesn't like taking pills, I can sympathize with your hope to avoid needing any meds for the foreseeable future.

Do-it-yourself physical exercises can be beneficial if you have some guidance and don't encounter any real obstacles, like pain.  I did my own PT post-op, based on a therapist's written instructions and a pictorial guide and it worked fine, for me.  I can't recommend it for everyone but simply offer my experience for what it may be worth to you (or anyone else reading this).

I trust your recovery will proceed rapidly from this point sans any more scares. :)

Thanks Jan, Lori and Jim.

Jan I know you got smiley happy but I enjoyed them.  They don't seem to work on my computer probably due to pop-up blockers or something like thiat.  I'm just barely computer literate so I don't know why.  I was really glad I didn't have a CSF leak although my first thoughts were of Debbi and her PICC line.  Glad I missed that too.

Lori -- I have to agree that it would seem making pancakes can be hazardous to my health.  Thank goodness I don't make them too often!

My incision is  still leaking, or really dripping a little and I e-mailed Dr. Choe again.  He assured me that as long as the fliud continues to look the same and I have no other symptoms, fever, redness, etc everything should be okay.  I am seeing him again next Friday and will try not to worry too much about this in the meantime.  For now, I found a bandaid that will stick to my head, regrowing hair and neck so nothing is dripping down my neck anymore.  That feels much better.

Wendy -- hoping to stop dripping soon

Wendy -

what a bummer about the smiley faces  :'(  Not to rub it in - like Lori would do - but I love them!  :D

Sorry you are still dripping, but I'm glad you found a bandaid that works - it must have been annoying before that.

How's the rest of your recovery going?

You're still dripping??  Is it bloody or clear?  If it's not CSF, what does your dr think it is?

Wendy-

Ugh!  Well, as one who had a leaky head myself, here's a tip on keping the goo contained -- get the square gauze pads (at the drug store) and cut one in half.  You can then use the paper tape to tape it to your neck at the bottom and to your ear on the sidie, thereby avoiding getting your hair involved.  I had to do that for about six weeks, so got very good at it.  It kept the goo from getting on my pillows and sheets.

I guess I should also offically welcome you to the Icky-head club.  Lucky you... :-\

hugs,

Hi all,
yesterday afternoon I thought I had graduated from the Icky Head Club because my incision stayed dry for a few hours but alas, it was not meant to be.  I started leaking again last night and am still leaking this morning although not much.

Tammy - thanks for the suggestion about the chiropractor.  My doctor said it would be okay as long as the chiropractor did not manipulate my neck.  I'm planning to call my PCP tomorrow for a referral.  It just so happens there is a chiropractor practically within walking distance who accepts my insurance and hopefully this will help a lot.
