Title: Mystery Diagnosis - Discovery Health
Post by: goinbatty on January 19, 2008, 08:34:48 pm
The episode that aired tonight at 9P will be repeated several more times tonight.  There's a case of a woman that for something like 8 years suffered from odd symptoms.  Very similar story to those with ANs that go undiagnosed for years.  Tests were all normal until they did MRI with contrast and found it.  Her schwannoma was on another cranial nerve (?10th).  Very interesting episode.

I watched that episode last night,I said to my wife thats gotta be a tumor, but then when they found the bad disks in her neck ,I thought oh so thats it!But the story unfolded and a schwannoma it was. What really gets me,and Im'sure many have the same expierences,is how doctors blow things off, don't use contrast in MRIs,don't listen or believe what patient is saying.
Using my own case for example(one shared by many on this forum)I presented to my ENT with symptoms to the letter of a AN.You would think he would order MRI just to exclude a AN.Especially as my symptoms got worse.Instead he assured me it was nothing.Even my GP who ordered the MRI tells me I shouldn't be having headaches, stabbing pains in head, and feeling as I do.I wish we could swap heads for one day and see what his conclusions are.
Sorry, just letting off some steam,as the last couple days Ive'really felt weird.Bruce

I was just going to ask if anyone had seen that last night.  If she had come to one of us for a diagnosis instead of her doctor, we could have fixed her a lot sooner!  I don't think it would have been a mystery to any of us!

I caught the tail end of this episode and wondered if anyone else on this forum had seen it.  I, too, found it very interesting.

Lately, I find myself drawn to the medical shows on Discovery Health; it seems like I could watch this channel for hours, which is very unusual for me since I normally don't watch TV.  I'm not sure if it's because these shows are so fascinating, or if it's just an excuse on my part to not clean my house LOL  ???   ;D

Cleaning house is overrated  LOL
I'll have to see if I can catch that. My gf who is a chiro watches it and tries to guess the diagnosis beforehand. We both see who can get it first  LOL
Bruce you are not alone in your frustration. My ENT told me I had a viral ear infection and wait a year and it should resovle on it's own. Testing indicated an MRI should have been ordered long before it was. Needless to say by the time they figured it out I was given six weeks to get on a surgical table as my brain stem was impaired. Had I of waited the year like the ENT suggested I can't say I'd be here.

What is the name of the episode?  I went to their website and am trying to see when it is coming on again.  It sounds very interesting!

Thanks Joef!

I see that it will be on again on April 15.  I will note it so I can watch.  Sounds like a good program!
