Title: Cold weather & BAHA
Post by: leapyrtwins on November 08, 2007, 06:08:37 pm
This is probably a strange question, but as I'm awaiting my insurance company's ruling on my upcoming (I hope) BAHA surgery, I was wondering if anyone with a BAHA has issues in cold weather.

I've noticed occasionally, post op, a dull aching in my head on my AN side when the weather is rainy.  It's no big deal; definitely something I can live with.  However, living in the Chicago area (think upcoming snow - most likely lots of it), I'm wondering if having a metal "screw" in my skull will result in pain in my head?  Maybe the screw isn't really metal at all, but titanium, so maybe it doesn't get cold  ???

Feedback, anyone?

Thanks,

Jan

I have not noticed any problems like that .. but anytime I'm out in the snow shoveling/rain/fishing etc... or something... I have a hat on! and leave the processor inside ... I normally only wear it at work or out to eat... (social type events)

* I lived in Chicago land one winter (6 month consulting gig) -- so I can relate to the winters *

I too get those dull aching headaches when the weather changes. With the Baha there are no worse nor any better. When I get a particularly bad headache though I do want the Baha off.

Short answer - no new headaches with the Baha

Glad to know that the BAHA won't make things worse.  As much as I'm dying to get one, I'm a little concerned about what negative changes it might possibly bring.  I currently don't have tinnitus or get painful headaches, and I asked the doc if the BAHA might change that (he assured me it wouldn't), but I never thought to ask about the cold weather.

Thanks,

Jan

I didn't start this thread, but Jan I'm curious. Did you ever find out about the BAHA and cold weather?

I hadn't even thought about it until today when a co-worker asked me how the abutment feels in really cold weather.

I'm not a hat person at all, if anything I will wear the hood of my coat.

Has anyone experienced any side effects from the BAHA in really cold weather? or even just having the abutment?

Cold weather has not been an issue for my BAHA.

My head feels like it did before I got the implant - normal, no pain, etc.

I rarely wear a hat in cold weather - with the exception of the one that Steve knit for me  ;)  And I only wear it when I'm shoveling snow or taking a long walk outside.

I don't wear my processor while I'm shoveling - it cost too much to risk damaging it.
