Title: DIM pills to protect healthy tissue from radiation
Post by: joanna_an on November 14, 2013, 05:42:48 pm
Hi everyone,

I have been diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma size 18 x 16 x 13 mm about a month ago but didn't do anything yet.

I would like to know if anyone of you is aware of the DIM pills that protect healthy tissue against radiation. When I mentioned my radiation oncologist about them he said that if I decide to have a DIM diet for my Gamma Knife then I'll be an experiment, as no one tried it before.
The research is pretty new. The abstrast is here: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/10/08/1308206110.abstract, but feel free to Google "DIM radiation" for more information.

Is anyone aware of this? Has anyone discussed this with doctors?

Regards,
Joanna.

Hi Joanna,
I find this DIM article to be fascinating? I wonder if it could be true? I am considering radiation and it would be wonderful to have any cellular assistance, wouldn't you think?
Have you found out any other information? Are you taking the pills?
Cathy

Supporting information for that abstract is here:

Appears to be in animal testing at this point.

Have never heard about anything like this before.

Didn't think there was a need to protect healthy tissue from radiation with GK or CK - since it's focused exactly where it needs to be via computer and shouldn't be targeted @ healthy tissue.

I have sent an email to the authors of the paper. They said we shouldn't do it because it may protect the tumor from radiation as well.. As the tumor being benign is considered "healthy tissue".. With cancerous tumors it's a different story..
Also the beams may be focused at the tumor but they still pass through healthy tissues to get there.. If it is this safe why doctors don't want to do it twice? Anything that changes DNA in cells is scary to me..

Hi Leapyrtwins

Just my five cents worth, regardless of GK, Cyberknife etc being targeted there will always be some fall out as there is with all radiation so some healthy tissue is bound to be exposed.  Personally I feel having SRS or surgery is enough for anyone and I would never want to take a load of pills and be a guinea pig to what might turn out to do more harm than good.  I regard all these pills as "poison" until they have been tested and proven.

The pills are not "poison".. They are available from Nature's Way as a dietary supplement.. I don't think they will harm you but they might protect the tumor from radiation as well.. Also it is not clear yet how big of a dose one needs to take.. Regardless, if they do prove to be successful they'll be used in the treatment of cancer and luckily an AN doesn't mean cancer..
