Title: Medical Records ...
Post by: msuscottie on August 23, 2006, 08:45:35 am
Random question, but after two brain surgeries I find myself wondering what exactly was done during these surgeries. I mean, I know the gist of what happened, they opened me up, removed some skull, pluked out the tumor and closed me back up, but I think it'd be interesting to read a full account of what happened specifically. Like some sort of report or something. I'm sure my medical records would have all of this info available in there, but can you get a copy of this? Is it easy to do? Has anyone else gone seeking out further info about your surgery?

Thanks

Hi Scottie--been wondering what you were up to!
They are called surgical records and you can get a copy just by contacting your surgeon. I got mine 3 1/2 years post op for $10.00. I suggest anyone who has AN treatment get copies of ALL their medical records and MRI's not to mention an itemized hospital bill and itemized insurance print-out.

So, what kind of information is on the surgical records? Is it like a play-by-play account of your surgery?

I have my surgical records...yes it was interesting reading.  It is like a play by play of what they did from start to finish.  They didn't charge me for mine.  I have kept all my doctors notes/records, surgical records and mri films and report since the onslaught of this journey.

how are you scottie?

I'm doing ok, thanks. It's good to hear from you all again. I'm going to try to get back in here at least once a day since I have 2 surgeries worth of experience to share. Outside of my last surgery on 2/1/06, my wife & I had our first child, a little girl, on May 4th. So ... that might help explain why I've had no time to post! How are you?

Capt . you only got charged because it was long after the surgery... any pre-op people should remember to ASK for surgery report while they are still in the hospital .. while at House my wife got the report  ..and she would not let me read it !!  :(

Hi Scottie, You've been missed. Been wondering how you are doing!

I know that when I spoke to Dr. Brackmann at House during my decision process, he emailed me the specifics of how each microsurgical procedure is performed (actually, a bit too graphic for me to read at the time as I was reading it and trying to enjoy dinner). I may still have the email as it outlines all of the techniques.

Great to see you back!

Yeah, that would probably be an interesting read, now that it's over of course

You got it... will check my email history to find it as it was back in February when I received it. I know I have the hardcopy as well so if I don't find the email, let me scan it at work tomorrow (I'm at home today) and then will email. If you want, PM me an email address so I know where to send... and suggestion is... don't be eating anything when you read it.

If one really likes to read the surgical aspects of all the different approaches, one can go to the
www.uihealthcare.com        site and go to the otolarnyology dept.        A link on the side gives Iowa head and neck protocols and if one digs, it gives the protocols for many surgeries they do including the AN surgeries.                       I have got my operative reports also from  my surgeries and is rather interesting to read.

Congrats scottie...we want pics!!!!  Can we all be honorary aunts?

I have read mine and it honestly wasn't that bad.  I think watching the video is worse.  No not my video the one that is online somewhere.  That was much harder for me to stomach!

I got mine as well. I just asked the receptionist at my drs office. I sat in front of the computer to look up all the big words while I read it. It is definitely an interesting read.
