Title: Back after a long absence. Chronic Cough
Post by: robynabc on August 08, 2012, 08:59:09 pm
HI All,

Not sure how many remember me and my 18 year old son who,  5 years ago,  had surgery for a 4.5 cm AN.  He is now out of school and working but his throat nerve still causes a ton of chronic coughing.  Since it has been 5 years now, it just occurred to me,   there did not seem to be any treatment back then but  that maybe they could do something to help him with new technology.  .  It is hard on on him but in every other way he is doing very well.

Does anyone know of a throat nerve damage specialist?  I think there are a a couple new meds out there.

Hi, I'm sorry to read that your son still has difficulties with coughing. I am only 2.5 years post-surgery (and about six months post FSR) from a similar-sized tumor, and I still  have coughing and some swallowing issues. Fortunately it is much better than it was. However, no one has really offered any other treatment. It seems that that very few patients suffer from this and there is not much they know about treating it.

I wish you luck in your search.

Well I found a throat specialist in Denver and hope he will try that.  I am sorry about your side effect.  It is tough.  Thanks so much for the reply.

The medical procedure to address this issue is called "Vocal Cord Medialization".

Some various techniques include (for single-sided Vocal Cord Paralysis):

VOCAL CORD INJECTION

TYPE I THRYOPLASTY

ARYTENOID ADDUCTION

REINNERVATION SURGERY WITH ANSA CERVICALIS

You can Google those terms.
