Title: To Get, or Not To Get....a pre-op pedicure?
Post by: lrobie on June 13, 2012, 01:53:37 pm
So my friends want to treat me to a spa day prior to my surgery.  I'm really looking forward to a pedicure, but I started wondering if you are allowed to have polish on your toe nails.  I believe I read or heard somewhere that you shouldn't have it on your fingernails.  Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa

I was told no polish on hands or toes.   :-[

True, nail polish is typically not allowed.
But, having a pedicure is really a good idea, you will feel pampered and even without polish your feet will feel much better.  So I would say go for it.

I was curious as to why no polish, then it occurred to me, docs look at your nail beds as a sign of lack of oxygen if they are turning colors, I'm guessing this is the reason.

Lisa .....

They do check your circulation via your fingernails so no polish there for sure.  Check with your doctor's assistant about the toenails.  I'm thinking that may be OK.

In any event, go for the Spa Day and pedicure, with or without polish!  Sounds delightful!

My wife got one the day before my surgery.  She enjoyed it much more than I would have.   ;D  I say go for it!

Because of all the advanced monitoring systems while you are under, many Drs don't use this method anymore...especially for your toes (you usually have the socks on now anyway) - just call & ask the nurse!
Good luck & have a good day with friends - NOTHING can change that special time!

Lisa,

As I have always felt, it takes a great deal of courage to go through with a brain operation, if that (a pedicure) is what it takes to make the experience more bearable for you, I'd say go for it!!!!While you are at it, have a full body massage too!

I am not a woman, so I don't know what it is like to have my finger nails painted or my toe nails painted but once on a cruise I did go for a full body massage, I'd say, to relieve stress there is nothing better!

In 2004, they did let me wear socks on my feet for the operation, as I recall.
