Title: Burnt/scalded sensation over 1/2 tongue - back after 10 mths post op???
Post by: HJY on September 29, 2011, 11:04:16 pm
Hi everyone,

I am 10 mths post mid fossa for a left AN. All was going well (except for left facial paralysis) and then suddenly I had some recent hearing loss in the AN ear - it was originally mild with tinnitus then suddenly it's a moderate loss with roaring tinnitus. They are saying I will likely need a hearing aide :( My baby turns one next week and I'm only 39! Not what you like to hear.

I've started steroids for the hearing to see if it'll improve but one thing I am concerned about is that the left side of my tongue has that nasty burnt/scalded sensation back. It just happened last night. This was terrible after surgery but went away some months ago. I've also had tingling around my lips on the left side. I had an MRI and the doctor can see no reason for this or the hearing loss and hence has no solution!!

Has anyone else had this 'burnt' feeling come back?

Thanks,
Heather

Hi,

I am 25 months post op and my only symptom when I was diagnosed was that scalded, buring feeling of my AN side of my tongue. After surgery it was gone for a few months then came back. Now it tends to come and go, sometimes I won't have it for weeks and then it comes on with a vengence. This has been a particularly bad week. I wake up fine in am and as the day goes on the sensation increases, until by bedtime I am ready to cut my tongue out. I have spoken to numerous drs about this and their response is that the sensation is caused by nerves looking to connect and do their job, but because they have been damaged they misfire and therefore we get these unusual symptoms. I was told by one specialist at John Hopkins that this usually begins to disappear by the third year post op. So I am waiting unpatiently:(

Hi,

sorry you got these symptoms back. I also had the burnt sensation and numbness before my surgery. It disappeared a few days after surgery, and then came back with a vengeance after about 2 months. I contacted my neurosurgeon and he said that fluctuations such as this are not uncommon for the sensory nerves (the trigeminal nerve in this case) and that it is hard to say if they are due to some permanent damage. He said there is no "solution" and I just have to wait it out. Fortunately for me, the numbness and burnt sensations started to improve gradually, until they completely disappeared and now everything is back to normal.
You are further off from surgery than I am, but I suppose that these fluctuations can still happen. Since your doctor does not see an obvious reason from the MRI, I would wait it out. Remember, nerves are so sensitive, as they regenerate all sorts of rewiring and strange things happen.
