Yup, mine was removed also. Not sure it really mattered though since my balance was already so bad before surgery. I actually have better balance now than before surgery. It took a few years to get to this point though.

I think that is the usual for most surgeries as then the brain can not compensate completely on the other side if one still left there.

I'm with Cheryl R, this is pretty typical of AN surgeries - and the body does compensate.

One of my surgeons actually gave me a shot of something in my ear a week before surgery to kill off my balance nerve ahead of time so I would start getting used to it being totally gone and would have less deal with right after surgery.  He would have liked to do it 2 weeks before surgery, but everything happened really fast for me.

Hi Kaykay,

First of all there are no stupid questions! Just people trying to get information for a problem that they would rather not have. So please ask anything you would like, and don't feel foolish or stupid, we have all been there and done that. I too had my balance nerve severed. The doctors believe that it is better to sever it than have it damaged and your brain trying to figure out what is going on. Instead of a steady flow of electricity, it would be like sparks firing on and off in your brain. I hope this helps? :)  Ann

Kaykay -

Ann is right, there is no such thing as a stupid question - here on the Forum or elsewhere.

Forgot to say that in my first response to this thread  :)

Kaykay .....

Just dittoing that there are no stupid questions!  ..... and yes, my balance nerve was severed the first go-around for me.  Made the second go-around a whole lot easier!  Balance adjustment all done three years ago.  Still a bit wobbly from weakness/fatigue but getting better every day.
