How long should you wait to have or try to have sex after surgery?
-
You should ask your doctor, but my guess is that if you are well enough to ask this question, you are good to go.
-
thank you a fast response
-
Could depend if you are male or female. Just no straining!
-
A very relevant question. I haven't had the guts to ask myself. Has anyone asked their doctor, and what was the reply?
-
Kenneth,
I was told to avoid chandeliers. Just kidding. I did not ask. I did complain once that my feeding tube was not very sexy.
-
Yeah if the timing feels right! >:D All the power to ya! 8)

Hey, a question I have definitive response for! When I was released at the end of my two week stay in ICU, I was told "three weeks before engaging in any sexual activity to avoid creating pressure in your head."
Now, whether or not that is anything more than my doctor's judgment and recommendation, I don't know.

Got an answer from my doc who said it would be "ok" as long as you don't over do it.
-
OMGoodness - I thought it was NEVER...you mean you can have sex after surgery? Don't tell Dave... >:D
K ;D
JK since I had all my girlies AFTER surgery! ::)
-
Now THAT's funny, I don't care who you are!
-tod
-
It depends if you have a private hospital room or not. LOL
-
Kay,
I thought you said the stork brought your girlies? ;)

Figured Lori and kaybo would have fun with this one. I do think these girls need to do a standup routine at the next seminar. They are natural born comedians, and I do mean this as a compliment, girls...really.
Good question...never saw it on here before...to be back on topic....

Don't kid yourself - the texts between the trio have been flying! Lori, I think you need to post your answer... >:D

I was just sitting back waiting for the replies from the infamous trio when I saw this ;)
Good question, really...my doc didn't address it with me, but I chose to tell my husband to not even think about it!

Funny story:
As you know, I was in a VERY bad way... I was out of the hospital but not doing very well, so they took me back down to the medical center to test me for a CSF leak. My mom, MIL and Dave were all with me - it took them all since I couldn't use my right side or walk very well. I was participating in a balance study for Baylor, but the tests made me soooo sick, so I withdrew. However, I agreed to let them continue to use my data and answered their questionnaires. With everyone in the room (& me being married a little over a year), the young girl ask if we had "resumed intercourse" - hello, we weren't even sleeping in the same bed!! I think she was just as embarrassed asking it! Needless to say, to this day, my MIL has never gone in another exam room with me!! :D

Well, if it wasn't for the catheter...it may have been real soon! LOL Sorry, I couldn't resist. But I guess it all depends on how you feel. I think I asked my Dr. about it and he said whenever I felt like it. So maybe if the body is in the mood for it, then you are ok for it??? PS: Lori and Kaybo...tsk tsk....lol

Watching folks.... this thread in particular! ;) Phyl :)
-
I still say it depends on if you are male or female! Plus I want to know the sex of the person that mentioned it. LOL! I am surprised it hasn't been mentioned long before this as we all know it has been thought of by most of us! More than once of us with multiple surgeries! Cheryl R That could a well attended mini session at the symposium!

CHERYL~
YOU WILD WOMAN!!! :o

Thanks for the laughs. I've been waiting for those responses!
Sorry I don't have anything funny to add...no secrets to tell......My husband treated me like a little princess post op with the killer headache and shortness of breath due to so much blood loss. Really can't remember the dirty details later........ >:D

Kudos to you for actually asking posting this!
I will have to say, I DID actually ask because I am a female that has went through 2 unexpected c-sections, and 2 other unexpected 'female' surgeries. Well, one of the things they strongly stated after those surgeries was waiting to have sex. ~~~~~SO, of course I was more along the lines that surgery meant waiting 6 weeks, or maybe I had an excuse...haha ;) Seriously, he said a couple weeks for the healing process & don't over do it ;)
I too enjoy the laughs from the topic, but in all seriousness.....it is brain surgery and having sex can 'mess' with your head ;D

you are just watching it because you KNOW it will give you some laughs... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Brutal headaches, facial pain and the side effects from being on Gabapentin and than Lyrica the libido got up and went. I was on Gabapentin for one week and I noticed a huge change. When I mentioned it to my doctor he looked at my husband with a smirk on his face and said, I'm really sorry Louie.
When I see that annoying commercial on TV with the guy sing and dancing "Good Morning, Good Morning it's great to stay up late" I want to take a baseball bat to the TV. I find all of these types of commercials to be completely lame >:D

Anti depressants can put a damper on it all too! I would given your dr a kick in the rear if it was allowed! Not nice to you!

Anne Marie,
How about the commercials showing the two separate outdoor bathtubs? Something about the logistics puzzles me.
-
K,
I loved your story ;D I had actually done a search on this after my surgery and there was a thread on here from long ago. Most people said to check with the doctor. I think a lot say to wait 6 weeks like with other surgeries.

OH, I'm getting those, trust me! :)
My understanding is to avoid the "brain strain" but unsure for how long. Since each surgery is unique to each AN'er, please follow dr's orders when it comes to this topic.

Well, I'm glad the other 2/3 of the trio chimed in with some witty things to say, because I'm at a loss here. Yes, it's true - happens even to "wordy" Jan every now and then ;D
When I was diagnosed with my AN, sex was THE last concern I had. Probably says a lot about me - but there were just so many other issues in my life at the time.
I had just been granted sole physical and legal custody of my children, been through a long, costly, nasty divorce, and ended my marriage of almost 22 years. I thought my life was going to get better - and instead I was told I had a tumor in my head :o
My biggest concern was would the tumor kill me - in other words, was it cancerous - and my second thought was how am I going to emotionally, physically, and financially support two 10 year-olds (that incidentally the stork didn't bring) if I don't come out of this "intact".
Looking back now, I wish one of my main concerns would have been how soon can I have sex.
So to those who find this a big question, ask your doctor - and more power to ya!

I'm surprized so many didn't have it addressed by their doctors. I know my doctor definately told me in my hospital discharge info.. I wonder what that says about me?! ???
Anyway, I was told 6 weeks. In reality... 4.
-
I don't remember feeling the urge after my main surgery...probably due to csf leak, but I was pregnant one month after my CSF leak surgery!!

Well now I know truth and only hope my husband does not check this post !!!! No, really !! :) Seriously, I think each one is different. With my head pain "it" was the furthest thing from my mind and most days still is. I do have to say,my head is killing me right now because of all the laughter :) Sometimes it is the best medicine and tonight the pain was worth it. Better not let my husband see that either :)

After my surgery, I bought a shirt that says "Not tonight dear, I had a craniotomy". (that cafepress website has a whole section of brain surgery stuff - very funny!). I wore it when I had my 7/12 surgery - the nurses got a good laugh. Almost as good as the shirt I wore in the hospital after my AN surgery that just said "Balance" on the front. Gotta entertain the staff. ;D
Lori
-
Aren't you the super-funny one, Lori!?! Too bad I didn't think of anything like that...wonder if they would've had that back in the dark ages when I had surgery?
Although I am still not sure about whether this was a legit question or not, it sure has been fun... ::)
K ;D

I think it was a fair question. But thanks for giving this ol' girl some giggles. Susan
-
I got some written info on my up and coming nose job and there is to be NO sexual activity for a minimum of 2 weeks after surgery. Also no bending and no lifting so; I guess laundry, cooking, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, dusting are out of the question. WINNING >:D Oh what a girl will do to out of her domestic duties!
Anne Marie
-
Anne Marie,
Maybe you can cross out the 2 and change it to 4 weeks. ;D

Just spotted this thread and what a hoot. we have some raunchy women on this forum i must say!
Down under, we don't worry about the pain, we just go for it! Must be all those Tim Tams - extra special side effects those Tim Tams have.
