Title: Odds your next door neighbor has a AN
Post by: Raven on October 30, 2010, 03:48:30 pm
What do you think those odds are? Actually our boats are side by side at the same marina. I was talking to him the other evening and my AN detector was going off, since then he had the MRI. Maybe he will post and we can give him a warm welcome, really a good guy, doesn't deserve this.

Hopefully everyone here is doing o.k.

John,

What marina is your boat docked at.   My dad and my sister in law dock theirs at the Baltimore Marine Center.  Not sure if you are in Baltimore,  but thought I'd ask (I have a small AN,  9mm x 7mm and NF1).

No boat here, but I wish I had one.

I'm hopeful your neighbor doesn't have an AN, but if he does, he's lucky to have you as a resource and as someone who will support him.

He's also lucky that you know enough about the Forum to direct him here.  I've found that sometimes newbies have no idea that the Forum even exists.

Hi John and Leslie ..... best to you with your AN decisions.

And hello Jan!  Hope you're doing well!  Been away for a couple months & haven't visited forum .... just lollygagging and thoroughly enjoying my baha.

John, what caught my eye on your thread was your moniker "Raven" .... and then, without reading much further, I knew you are from this area cause of your mention of Dr. Eisenman at UMMC.  Spoke with him back in 2004 re my AN .... but opted for Hopkins for my Nov 04 surgery.

I only chime in here to introduce myself ..... the forum is definitely a terrif place for advice and support.  So I too encourage you to mention this place to your next-slip friend.  It's also good to know others in your area, for a time when an AN get together is formed, as you might have read about from others in diff parts of the US.

Keep smiling ....... Greg

Seems we are not as rare as we used to be!  I was talking to the mom of one of my daughter's classmates last week and found out her husband was just diagnosed with an AN.  I guess everyone wants to be just like us!!   ;D

And on the boat subject, my aunt and uncle used to belong to Bodkin Bay Yacht club in the Baltimore area.  Is that near you, Raven?  I don't remember exactly where it is since the last time I was there was many years ago.

Hi Lori,

I've been to Bodkin Yacht Club a few times. It is on Bodkin Creek off the Patapsco River, and yes it is in the Baltimore area. Fairly close to where I'm at.

Greg, I highly recommended the forum to my friend, I'm pretty sure he has checked it out. I did attend one of the AN get togethers for the Baltimore area, very informative.

I (with my husband's help) had posted before that the odds of a person developing a AN and/or meningioma over a lifetime are aound

1-in-200

(that being computed by accumulating the posted yearly rates over a lifetime of, say, 80 years)

That means that is a marina with 100 boats (say with two people per boat), then there will be a person with AN at the marina.

If the marina has 200 boats, then two people at that marina will have an AN [does your marina have at least 200 boats?]

if the marina has 400 boats, then four people at that marina will have an AN.

Etc.

Update on Tom.................. I saw Tom yesterday at Hopkins. Dr. Tamargo performed retrosigmoid and all went well, the operation took about six hours. I could not believe how good he looked, no facial issues or eye problems. The bandage had been removed, I never seen a retro incision before, live and in person, definetly different then middle fossa. Tom said he could hear the Dr. snap his fingers near his ear, so hopefully some hearing was saved, time will tell. He should be going home soon.

Take care everyone,

John

Thanks, John, for update on Tom ...... sending a big virtual back-slap to him!

I have to laugh at your comment about the doc's finger-snap near the ear on the AN side. My doc did that also, so that's part of the written record .... I could hear it too ..... but they didn't plug up my good ear on the other side, so, sure, I heard it!   ::)

Keep smiling!
