Title: Success Story
Post by: stef84 on June 12, 2010, 06:38:10 pm
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to share my story, as I know reading about successful procedures made me feel very hopeful before my surgery. I am hoping I can do the same for someone who is nervously awaiting their own surgery.

I am 25 years old. I had a translab surgery last Wednesday, June 2nd at NYU Medical Center performed by Dr. Roland and Dr. Golfinos. I went in thinking my tumor was 14mm, but found out that it had doubled in size after the surgery was over (My doctors were fantastic enough not to worry be before going into the OR).

My surgery took a little over 4 hours and I was so lucky to have all of my family and boyfriend there to greet me as I woke up. In the recovery room I woke up dizzy and a little nauseous, but with no pain. The deafness in my right ear was unnoticable as my hearing decreased slowly throughout the past year. The doctors came to tell me that everything went wonderfully and my facial nerve was not affected at all. I spent three days in the hospital- my only complaints were that I had a stiff neck from positioning during surgery which made sleeping very uncomfortable and no appetite from the anesthesia (hospital food is pretty awful anyway!). I also had a drain from my belly, but it turned out to be nothing for them to remove it!

I was able to come home last Saturday, and have been recouperating at home with my parents and visiting family. After a few days at home I started to regain my balance and today I feel almost 100%. I am walking everyday and my balance is almost completely back to normal. My stitches were removed yesterday and the incision on my belly is healing great. Dr. Roland made the incision right along the bottom of my belly button, and it is already starting to blend in and become unnoticable. I never imagined that I would recover so quickly. I realize how fortunate I am to have had no complications and such a rapid recovery. I just wanted to share my story.

Congratulations on a successful surgery and recovery! Amazing!

Age is on your side, too :D Only 4 hours too. Hopefully others will read this and not worry so much. :)

Hi, Stefani ~

Thanks for the positive update!  I know you were predictably nervous prior to your surgery (which is perfectly normal) and I'm delighted to learn that it went exceedingly well and that you seem to be recovering nicely. May your recuperation be swift and complete.  :)

Jim

Stef:

That is the fastest recovery I know about. I agree with Moe that age is on your side. Remember to take it easy even if you are feeling fantastic.

Stef .....

Thanks for sharing your wonderful success story.  Sometimes we can become bogged down by all of the negatives related to having an AN ..... it is terrific to read the reports of good results.

Congratulations on the "best outcome" for your AN.  Be sure to listen to your body as you recover and rest adequately between the exercise times.  Recovery is not always a steady uphill progress ..... sometimes there are little twists and turns and that is perfectly normal.

Keep up the good work.

Stef,

Thanks for sharing your experience.  It is always good to hear about a complete surgical success.  Many of our fellow forumites have been fortunate enough to have Drs.  Roland and Golfinos as they surgeons and also have wonderful things to say about them.
