Title: thumping in the good ear
Post by: turbomom on February 03, 2010, 09:36:54 pm
This is a random and probably unusual question.....Does anyone ever experience an inconsistent thumping sound in the ear opposite their AN. Sometimes when I am lying down I hear almost like a heart beat sound in my good ear. Just thought I'd ask.  ???

I think the heartbeat sound can be a form of tinnitus (theres a specific name for it, but now I can't remember it..). I used to get it in either ear when I was little, but haven't noticed it so much lately. I have constant 'white noise' tinnitus in my left (AN) ear, but sometimes get a regular 'ringing' type in the right ear. When I asked a neurosurgeon about it he said it wasn't a big deal / anything to worry about.

Yes, I often but not always hear my heartbeat in my good ear when I lay down. Sometimes it is a thump, but more often it is a pulsing swoosh sound. I can often change the position I am lying in and it will go away.

Do you just hear the thump or do you also feel it? Around 20 years ago, I both heard and felt a repetitive thumping in my ear on the AN side -- long before I was diagnosed. It eventually went away, but I wonder to this day if that was the first sign of my AN beginning to grow. I don't want to alarm you -- this is just me wondering out loud, and I have no reason to believe it was related. But it makes me curious about whether you feel the pulsing or not. At the time, my GP chalked it up to stress. I thought it was due to a food allergy. But I still have no idea. And it hasn't bothered me in probably 15 years.

pulsatile tinnitus
The perception of abnormal pulsing sounds in the ears or head, which are most often caused by conductive hearing loss

I think this is what you are experiencing.
