Title: titanium plate exposed
Post by: teffaz on January 05, 2010, 02:44:02 pm
Hello, all!
There have been technical problems in my attempts at posting, so that's why you haven't heard from me in awhile. Thanks for all your good thoughts!

At seven months post-op I am doing well. I'm grateful for my Baha, also.

Soon I will have surgery to repair the wound site from my translab surgery. There is "tissue breakdown." The skin is receding and exposing the titanium plate and screws. The site is close to my Baha implant, so that makes surgery a little more tricky. Recently I have been diagnosed with connective tissue disease, and so I believe that is the cause of the wound breaking down.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. . . .

Take care!

Best,
Teffaz (Brenda)

Wow, Brenda, I've never heard of this happening!  I hope the surgery will take care of the problem so you can heal once and for all.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Hi, Brenda ~

It's good to see you post again - but I'm sorry to learn about the problem with your incision and requiring surgery to repair it.  I hope and will pray that the repair is satisfactory and your healing can continue, apace.  :)

Brenda -

while I'm thrilled you can post again, I'm so sorry to hear about your plate  :(

Like Lori, I've never heard of this happening, so perhaps like you say, it's related to the connective tissue disease.

Regardless, I hope the surgery is successful - and I'm happy to hear your BAHA isn't a problem.

Please let us know the date of your surgery so we can put it on the AN Calendar.

Best,

Jan

Eeew, I'm so sorry to hear about that Brenda :(
So i gather they will do a skin graft of some sort over that area?
Please keep us posted, just another little bump in the AN road, heh? >:(

Yes. The surgeon will permanently remove at least one of my titanium plates and screws, "clean the bone flap, and design an adjacent scalp rotation flap to turn into the defect. . . "  I think there might be some man-made material used, also.

The site is close to my Baha implant, so that makes surgery a little more tricky. Recently I have been diagnosed with connective tissue disease, and so I believe that is the cause of the wound breaking down.

I have a surgery date now: Fri., Feb. 5. It will be out-patient, lasting approximately one and one-half hours.

I'll be fine!

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Best,

Wow! Does the area hurt at all?  When I was reading the posts, the surgery sounded complicated, but then I got down to the part about being outpatient and 1 1/2 hours...whew!  Sounds like they have it all under control...Good luck on this...I'll be thinking of you on Feb. 5th!
