Title: What's up with the board?
Post by: GM on November 30, 2009, 08:03:50 pm
I was looking at a few older posts and I've noticed some "encripted" changes to the posts.

For example:  http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=9387.0

Many of us use older posts as references for newbies...what's up?

GM -

I often refer newbies to old posts and have never seen this before today.

Wonder if it's just a temporary glitch.

Perhaps one of the moderators can tell us.

Do you really want to hear about Unicode character codes?  ???

I think this happened when we switched providers back in June. It seems to occur when there is (or was) certain punctuation in the titles, and sometimes in the body text as well. Maybe things in double quotes? Some of the special characters obviously didn't translate very well, whatever it was. As far as I know, there is nothing that can be done about it, short of figuring out what they are supposed to be and editing them all by hand.

Addendum:

If you change your browser character encoding from Western to Unicode, you can see the original text.

In Internet Explorer, it is View menu, Encoding, Unicode (UTF-8); or More, then Unicode (UTF-8).

In Firefox, it is View menu, Character Encoding, then Unicode (UTF-8); or More Encodings, then Unicode (UTF-8). (Firefox lists 8 versions of Unicode!).

In the sample GM and Kate showed, it should be CBS' "The Doctors", except someone used the fancy version of quote marks (pointing different directions), which show up in Unicode, and produce squiggly nonsense (that's the technical term) when displayed in Western (ISO-8859-1).

I liked it better when it was "now I know my ABC's, tell me what you think of me." :)
