Title: Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
Post by: Captain Deb on November 23, 2009, 02:18:04 pm
Hi Family!

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and good luck to all the cooks out there.  I've had a headache for 3 weeks but I'm cooking anyway--did not do it last year and I really missed having some turkey.  I'm going to try to stretch it out over the next three days and definitely taking my caregiver, Dr Love, to the store with me to shop.  It will be a small family gathering but I want to make lots for leftovers because my grandscallywags will be here on Friday (their Pa couln't get off work so we won't see them till Fri evening) Am shopping Tues,  baking a pie, the stuffing, and the green beans on Wednesday, and doing the turkey, gravy and mashed taters on Thurs.  I remember one memorable Thanksgiving where I cooked for everyone with two screaming kids running around the house, then missed dinner because I had a full-blown brainwreck by the time we were ready to eat. Not fun. Amtaking my time this year.  Although I may have trouble catching this big feller:

I will be thinking of each and every one of you and how much you mean to me.  You folks are my lifeline.  Especially some of you--you know who you are!!

I'm so grateful to have found this forum and I wish all of you would just come over and have Thanksgiving dinner with me!!!  Let's hear it for no headaches or wonkyhead for Thanksgiving!!!  Yeah!!!

Lets hear how YOU are going to make it easy on yourself this year. Or are you?

Hugs to everyone,

Capt Deb(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee60/Captdeb_photos/pirate-smiley-12.gif)

..... and a Happy Thanksgiving to All!

..... but Deb, it does not sound like you are going to relax very much over the Holiday.  I hope you can delegate most of the work to others standing around.

For a number of years we have gathered two extended families at the parents of our daughter-in-law.  However, we have turned over the cooking responsibilities to the younger generation.  They have a blast teasing each other while preparing a delicious feast for the rest of us.  I still make the potato souffle and the dinner rolls, but they do the rest.  Oh, I'm getting hungry already .....   :o

Safe travels for everyone driving over the holiday.

Deb ~

Thanks so much for your warm and sincere wishes for this Thanksgiving Day!

My wife and I are going to celebrate the way we usually do, by enjoying the holiday repast at my wife's brother's home where his wife does all the cooking.  I think Tina will be making a pumpkin pie as our 'offering'.  A good time is guaranteed for all.  :)

I'm pleased to see that (a) you plan to cook the Thanksgiving meal this year and, (b) you plan to do it incrementally, saving your strength.  Sounds like a good plan.  Thanks for the dinner invitation but we're already booked.  Thanks too, for your many contributions to these forums, both serious and lighthearted.  May your future be headache-free...you deserve that.

Jim

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, my dear family of Aner's,

I am doing the cooking, but will have side dishes brought from my grown kids. Today I already made the cornbread dressing and the Yam balls and the frozen jello salad. Tomorrow the gravy the pies and pumpkin bread, then wed. the greenbeans, and veggie platter, and dips, on thursday the Turkey. I just can't do it all at once anymore! This may be my last one, time to turn it all over to the kids!! May I wish all of you a very wonderful day with your loved ones and if you haven't a place to go, you are welcome at our place! We always have enough for an Army!!! Marines and Air Force and Navy too! Blessings to all ...............................

Captain Deb,

Thank you for starting this wonderful thread!  I see that despite those darn headaches, your humor and great wit rise above to help us greet the day!

A Happy Thanksgiving to All!  Only now do i truly appreciate this forum family (was in too much shock last year) getting me through the good and bad times, supporting all those in need (even when you don't know it.)

I am grateful for the forum, the moderators and all those who participate, even if only occasionally.
The collective wealth of knowledge gives me the insight i would not otherwise have.

[Deb - hope we get to meet in the future!  My mom has cousins in Boone, NC, and i lived in Winston-Salem area in the early '80s, where both my youngin's were born.
Now the 'baby' is 21 and my older daughter is soon 25.  I would be happy for them to do all the cooking, that would be great!  But will at least start some of the preps today - i like your strategy.]  I did take the week off from work, so no real excuses for not cooking!

For everyone who is traveling, my prayers are for a safe journey.
Sincerely,
Sue

Hi Deb and all my fellow ANers!

I am also hosting the feast at our house, so the cooking will start later today (when the money-earning part of my day is over!)  Luckily for me, Aunt Rosie is bringing fresh Italian pastries from Queens!! I will enjoy cream puffs, canolis and other delectables for all of you!!

Cheers, Salute, Chin-chin, etc.

I'm so happy to be able to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving...and how thankful and grateful I am for all of the blessings we receive from the Lord every day!  The AN site has been a HUGE blessing to me...

This year will be a little different for us...our Florida family is "dwindling" as so many have passed away in the past year-or-two...but we will be having dinner with hubby's Aunt at her Nursing Home tomorrow!  She's in GREAT shape for her age...A little dementia, but not bad for 100+ years old!  On Thursday, we are roasting a Prime Rib (not too much into the "turkey" scene) for just the two of us, and putting up our Christmas tree!  (I LOVE the Christmas Season and want it to last as long as possible!)  Woohoo!!

Hugs...

Barbara

This will be the twenty-sixth year that I'll be preparing the Turkey in our home; we picked up a fresh 17 pounder last night at the local butcher shop.  Wonky head, headaches, bum eye, lousy balance, who cares, it's still one of my favorite days and the only time during the year I get to use the good knife. Besides, we're talking tryptophan and gravy, you gotta love it--food and drugs all in one sitting served up on my Mother's Lenox China--the once a year that stuff comes out of the hutch.

I sure do have a lot to be thankful for this year, less than four months after Brain Surgery.  Its almost like last year, when I sat down to Thanksgiving dinner six months out from Bypass Surgery.  Gosh, I only hope next year it will only be a lanced hemorrhoid I'll have to reflect on--I know, not while you're eating!

A Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Take Care!

Happy Thanksgiving to my Virtual Family!

Rich (Rich56) and I usually go to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving. She’ll be cooking the turkey (she makes the best turkey!!), potatoes, and chocolate cream pie. I’m making the meat stuffing, almond puff pastry and a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

On the ride over to her house (about a 20 minute ride) Rich and I pop in my Arlo Guthrie CD and listen to Alice’s Restaurant. That’s tradition!

I plan on starting a new tradition this Thanksgiving Day.

At 3 PM (eastern time), I will be raising my glass for a toast to everyone here on the forum. If there is a good side to getting an AN, it’s in getting to know all of you. I’m glad to be a part of such a caring community… it warms my heart to see how much everyone cares about each other. So, if anyone feels like joining me at 3 PM… consider yourself invited.

For me, this year brings a whole new appreciation for family and friends, and for the little things in life that are rarely given a thought… until you’ve had an AN.  I have a lot to be thankful for this year, but what I am most thankful for, is my wonderful husband Rich.
My life, my love, my soul mate.

Happy (and safe) Thanksgiving to all,  :-*

Scarlett and Rich

Oh Scarlett, almond puff pastry?  YUM YUM!  Once when I was a kid I went on a long driving vacation with some friends and the only cassette tape we had was Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger.  I'll never forget the words to The Garden Song.  "Inch by Inch, Row by Row"...  Feels like my life most days.  :)

Forgot to add earlier, my mom is making Thanksgiving and I'm taking artisan bread and Molasses Crinkles.   ;D

Happy Thanksgiving to all!  I will be cooking for around fifteen...not much over the normal Sunday dinners at my house.  We all have so much to be thankful for and a big one for me is having all of you in my life.  We will all be also celebrating the engagement of my youngest daughter.  Her intended intends to pop the question during our dinner and put the ring in her favorite dessert!  We are welcoming this wonderful young man with very open arms and much love.  He is an awesome addition to our family and he asked David and my permission to ask Michelle to marry him.  It doesn't get much better than this.  Enjoy your day, eat too much and be thankful for each other.
Hugs to all,
Brenda

I, too, want to wish everyone here a Happy Thanksgiving!  ANs really teach you how to put things in perspective fast and I am grateful for this as well as for all the blessings this AN has brought into my life.  While I would not wish this ardurous journey on anyone, it has taught me more about myself and the people surrounding me that I ever could have imagined.  Sort of like the blindfold is off!

We are expecting 30 people for Thanksgiving dinner which, I know, is crazy for someone who is only 9 weeks post op, but I am GRATEFUL for a husband who cooks, cooks well, and cooks for large crowds as he is a firefighter.  It is his side of the family and it is a reunion that was planned before my diagnosis.  It was for his mother's 90th bday but she passed away in August, so now they will bury her ashes on Friday as a memorial.  I am anxious about the crowd but know that I am just a walk away from peace and quiet when I need it.

I want to also reiterate what everyone has said about this forum.  It has been a godsend to me, providing me with information, support and a place to vent when needed.  Only here do I feel like people truly understand what I am experiencing and I am forever grateful for everyone who has helped and continues to help me on this AN journey.

So Happy, Happy Thanksgiving to all and don't eat toooooo much!  I, too, will raise a glass at 3 pm to toast all of you!

Cheryl

Interesting Cheryl, noticed you were on same one I'm gonna comment on to  ;D

I also want to tell everyone Happy Thanksgiving and I too am very Thankful for this site and those who have read and understand my blog.   I think I'd be emotionally off more if it weren't for a lot of you people who totally understand!!

I actually am going to spend my day home alone in piece, which is the best thing.   With being only 2 weeks post op and the delayed swelling issue (or whatever it's called again), I'm having issues with noises too.   So, being at our family crowd of 40 people....NO WAY.      I had my hearing right after the surgery and no facial issues, but the I got the delayed reaction too.      I also noted just now for those of you who also followed Mike (Loose Screws) blog, he now has another posting and he too is having that issue.      I have some other issues thanks to my odd acting body.    But and am Thankful for God in my life, my wonderful husband, boys, family, friends, people on here I don't even know AND even my doctors.   My MEI dr. has been awesome and are working with doctors here to try to figure out other issues.

SO, now I'm going to post a couple more info. questions in other areas.

Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!  and God Bless us all!

I am taking a break from baking apple pies for tomorrow. My husband bought SEVEN BUSHELS of apples at a fundraiser. I don't know what he was thinking. He has been making apple butter several times a week and this is the second time I've made pies. The pies are very pretty - I am cutting autumn leaf shapes with cookie cutters and overlapping them instead of using a plain top crust. And, I am thankful to say, we are down to just one more bushel.

We are hosting Thanksgiving this year. It is the first Thanksgiving since my husband's brother and my father passed away, and the second since my husband's father, so we will have three recent widows among our guests. Hopefully we will dwell on what we are thankful for and it will not be melancholy.

We are having ham and turkey breast (I think that will be easier than roasting an entire bird), mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cream corn, green bean casserole, salad, fruit salad, rolls, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and pie. My guests are bringing many of the side dishes, so it's not as hard as it looks.

If I had thought about it in time I would have put potato peel pie on the menu.

Have a great day, everyone.

I love Apple Butter...used to buy big jars of it at a road side farm stand coming out of the hills of western North Carolina back into northeast Georgia...it's so good!

I will absolutely be raising a toast to the forum tomorrow. So many people reached out to me or answered my questions on threads, through private messages and phone calls -- with special honors to LA Nancy, who gave me tours, brought groceries to Seton Hall and was on my speed-dial when I needed encouragement. This is an extreme situation that deserves an extreme support group, and this is it!

Included in my toast will be the House Clinic and the wonderful nurses at St. Vincent's, as well as the friends, family, co-workers and neighbors who helped me through a trying year!

A wonderful and blessed day to everyone!

Thanksgiving blessings to my fellow AN'ers!  I too thank you for your support and wisdom, even when it's not intended for me!  I have learned a lot just browsing through the messages and know I can come here anytime if I'm in need.  I have much to be thankful for, especially these past two months since surgery.  Having family over for Thanksgiving dinner was icing on the cake (or should that be whipped cream on the pumpkin pie!).

I was a little late in my toast, but I did raise a nice glass of local Norton this evening in honor of the forum.

Lunch was great, the turkey breast turned out fabulous. I have a new favorite way of fixing turkey. So easy - I coated the surface of the turkey breast with olive oil, then added some steak rub I found in the spice cabinet, popped it in a roasting bag and put in a roaster (325 degrees F) for 3.5 hours. I also put an onion in the cavity as it roasted. It was moist and very tasty, easy to slice and serve and not much mess or waste.

We also had spiral cut ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, cream corn, lettuce salad, sweet potatoes, pickled beets, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls with my husband's apple butter. I made apple and pumpkin pies and my MIL brought a gooseberry pie. The only mishap was forgetting to put the fruit salad on the table.

Most importantly, we had some wonderful family time with no meltdowns over the losses of the past year.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving as much as I did. Now I'm looking forward to Christmas - I'm almost done with knitting hats for all my nieces and nephews!

How cool this thread has become!!  Thanks to all of you who chimed in--BTW--I love Alice's Restaurant and the movie, too!! Thanks for the pics, Rich and Scarlett.

I am avoiding Black Friday.  Having a relaxing day at home and expecting the grandscallywags in the afternoon.  Got through cooking dinner all by myself--hubby's back went out and brother has shingles.  Did all the clean up, too.  Had to drug myself a little, but I'm pretty used to that.  My meal was awesome--thanks to it not being cold enough to kill all the rosemary, sage, thyme and chives in my herb garden.  Just reminding everyone with headaches and/or wonkynoggin (new word) to make it easy on yourself.  This whole holiday season stresses us out a lot and can be overwhelming.

Peace and Blessings to you all!

Greetings to all,

Sorry I am so very late in coming to this thread.  I hope all of  you had a wonderful Thanksgiving  -- you were all in my thoughts yesterday and I just wanted to say how very thankful I am to have all of you in my life.  You are all very dear to me in a very unique way.

Tam -- Your message in particular touched me.  You are a very brave and strong  lady and I'm sure you will come through your surgery with flying colors even if, as you say, everything doesn't go quite as you hope. We,of course,  will all pray that it does go off exactly as you hope it will.    It sounds like you have truly caring wonderful docs and an amazing backup team.  The day or your surgery will be here before you know it and with their support, you will get through whatever challenges arise.  We will be here too, to support you however we can.

Rich and Scarlett -- Great pics!

Best wishes,
Wendy
