Title: NYC/NJ Area Brunch at Brendans
Post by: Debbi on September 11, 2009, 08:56:20 am
It's time to gather the ANers in the NY/NJ area for fun, food and laughs!

When:  Saturday, November 7 at 12 Noon
Where:  Brendan's Bar and Grill - 42 W. 35th Street - Between 5th and 6th Avenue
Who:  Anyone who lives or is visiting the area, anyone who has, had, or wants to have  :D an AN!

Wendysig and moi are coordinating, so feel free to PM either of us if you have questions.  And, as we get closer, let us know if you plan to attend so that I can book a suitably large table.

Brendan's has a fixed price brunch menu on weekends; figure on around $25 per person all inclusive.  For more info on the restaurant, click here http://www.brendansbar.com/ (http://www.brendansbar.com/)

Hope you ALL can make it!  We promise lots of laughs and good friends.

Awesome!  Sounds like we are going to have our largest gathering ever!  Wcrimi, hope to finally meet you!  Madison, JeffB, Another NY Newbie - looking forward to meeting all of you!

I'll get a firmer headcount as we get closer so I can reserve a large enough table at the restaurant.  And, I'll PM everyone with my cell phone number for any last minute changes/questions.  In the meantime, spread the word!

warmly,
Debbi (and Wendysig)

I talked to another recent ANer this morning and hope that she will also join us on the 7th.  Her name is Kathleen and she had surgery in March in NY (thanks to Cindyj for sending her to me!)  I told her what a nice group we are!   ;D

Hi everyone!

It looks like we should have a really good turn out next month if everyone who posted here can make it!  I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again, along with the newbies to our lunch crowd.  I'd like to make the reservation by the end of next week -- I'm sure it can be changed if need be, but I'd like to get an approximate head count by next Wednesday or Thursday.

Thanks,
Wendy

Hi everyone,

I just made our brunch reservation for Saturday, November 7.  As Debbi stated when she started this thread it will be:

When:  Saturday, November 7 at 12 Noon
Where:  Brendan's Bar and Grill - 42 W. 35th Street - Between 5th and 6th Avenue

It looks like we have an even bigger turnout this time, as I always say, the more the merrier!  I'll PM my phone number to all of you in case anyone needs to get in touch with me that day for any reason.   I look forward to seeing you all in just over a week!

Hi Debbi,

Thanks for the invite but I think it's a bit too soon for me, surgery 10/14. Had sutures removed on Friday and had to see Dr. Roland again Monday for my leaking head. He put me on antibiotic in case of infection and my head is still draining and still feel foggy. Perhaps I can make the next brunch and will be able to meet you all.  Regards to all.

Hi Ronnie and Cheryl,

Robbie -- I'm sorry to hear you have a leaky incision.  I had this problem too for two months and although it was bothersome and made me very nervous a couple of times, I was fortunate and did not develop an infection.  Hopefully you won't either.  Hang in there and keep us posted.  I hope we get to meet you at the next brunch.

Cheryl,

I'm glad to hear that you'll be able to make it to the brunch.  It looks like we're going to have a relly good turnout.  I look forward to meeting you!

Hi all,

It looks like there are going to be 18 - 20 people at our brunch on Saturday.  As Joe said, the best turnout yet, so it should be a lot of fun.  I believe I PM'd my cell number to everyone.  The reservation is made in my name -- Wendy Neistein and is at 12:00 noon as you all know.  See you there!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting everyone today! :D  I wish I had had more time to spend so I could have chatted more with the other end of the table!  But next time, right?!!!  I made my train by 30 seconds - literally sat down and the wheels rolled - after a MAD dash through the streets of NYC!  So I can add jogging/running/dodging New Yorkers on busy sidewalks to my recovery checklist - I left Brendan's at 2:27 and my train left at 2:45 pm!  Now I am on my couch recovering - may be here for a couple of days after that!  ;D lol  Looking forward to seeing some pictures and kudos to Wendy and Debbi for organizing and finding just the right restaurant with not much noise!

Well, we had a fantastic time today - our when we first met a little over a year ago, it was just JerseyGirl (Eve), Joe, Wendysig and me ... today we were 19 strong!  We had great representation from both posties and "pre-bies" (yep, I just made that up on the spot!).

Here's a picture of the whole gang, minus Cheryl (Another AN Postie) who was madly dashing to catch her train (so glad you made it - and I am in awe that you were running through the streets of NY just 6 weeks post op!)

And, here is a picture of the Golfinos/Roland patients, shown by treatment date, starting with Mike I (W & W), Nance (summer 2008), Debbi (Apr 2008), Mary (Mar 2008), and Joe (Jan 2007)

And last, Ken and Cheryl having a chat, before Cheryl dashed for the train!

It was wonderful meeting so many new people, sharing experiences, making new friends.  Being able to connect with other people who share this unique journey is such a blessing!

This was so much fun! Many thanks to Wendy and Debbi for arranging and organizing everything -- you two really know how to host a good party! It was good to see so many familiar faces, and catch up with their lives, and equally wonderful to welcome others into our group.

Everyone looked great, and the recent surgical patients appear to be well on the road to some amazing recoveries.

I'll identify myself in the picture that Debbi posted earlier since I don't have a picture in my profile. I'm in the front row, wearing a brown sweater and brown slacks, standing between Mary (short-sleeved blue top) and Eve (jerseygirl) in the black coat.

Thanks again for such a fun afternoon; I'm looking forward to our next get-together.

In this pic the mix is not straight lines so the names may be a little more confusing, but here they are -- Debbi and her husband Willie ,Neal (nteeman), Miranda (Mandy) in front of her is Mary (marymom I think), next to her is Pat, Mickey's wife, Catherine (jerseygirl2) is slightly in front of Pat and Mickey is slightly behind Catherine, Joe is behind Mickey and in the back next to Joe is Ken, I'm in front  of Ken, and Eve (jerseygirl)l is in front of me, Lauren (ombrose4) is next to me and Alan (her partner)  is slightly behind her,  Kathleen is next to Alan and Nancy (nance)  is next to her.  I'm not sure why Jeff (jeffb)  isn't in the picture, and Cheryl had to run for her train but as you can see, we managed to get a picture of her in the first shot with with me and Eve.

I really had a great time and it was wonderful to meet the newcomers to our group!  I hope you all had as good a time as I did and found our discussions helpful.  I look forward to getting together again, probably in the spring.  Debbi and I will be happy to coordinate our next get together and  keep you all posted!  In the meantime, I'll see you all here on the forum.

Best to all,
Wendy

Thank you all for a wonderful time!  This is a great group of folks - all so nice, and I learned so much!  I must have been in the rest room when the picture was taken :'(  As a result of my conversations with many of you, today I spent a lot of time on http://vestibular.org, and tomorrow I plan to send my November 6 follow up MRI to House for a telephone consultation, and make an appointment with Dr. Choe, and shortly thereafter with with Dr. Gollfinos.  This has been a difficult journey, and certainly I could not have not have coped with the challenges as well without the knowledge, input and caring of all of you.  Thank you so very much.  And a special thanks to Wendy who particularly (gently) made me realize I have more research to do before making a decision.

Hi Jan,

I got my hair cut a couple of days before our brunch.  My guy was very chatty and got carried away with the scissors -- it will take some time before my hair is as long as I usually wear it, but thanks for the compliment!  We had a really great time and luckily, this time both Debbi and I remembered our cameras!

Jeff,

Sorry you didn't get into the pictures.  I didn't realize until I got home you were missing -- sorry about that.  Once we got the check sorted out everyone was in a hurry to catch trains to New Jersey and Long Island and I guess we didn't realize you were missing.  You'll notice my husband is not in there either since he was my photographer.   I'll make sure you're not left out next time for sure!  As for our conversations, I'm happy to help in any way I can, as we all are.

Hi Nancy,

I love your new picture -- you look marvelous!!!  The great thing about Brendan's is that the noise level is tolerable and the food is good,  the menu offers quite a few choices and reasonably priced for midtown Manhattan.  Since we go there for brunch we also get a choice of mimosa's or Bloody Marys which is nice too!!

Wendy

Brendan's rocks!  Mainly because we can have an (almost) private party, and time to get to talk with everyone who is so supportive.

Do only nice people get acoustic neuromas???  Seems like it.  Is there a study out there for that?

Thanks for hosting us, Catherine and Debbi,

Nancy

Hi Wendy,
I got the results of my follow up MRI today, and my tumor is unchanged!  Great news!  But, I need to find out why I have so much dizziness for a 4mm AN.  I expect to talk with HEI in a day or two, Dr. Kwartler of Summit Medical Group next Wednesday, Dr.Choe of Mount Sinai next Thursday and then Mayo Clinic in three weeks.  I feel like Sherlock Holmes!

Well, Phyl, we should be thanking you for setting the bar high with the Apple Dumplin' Gang!  It was seeing your posts about brunch gatherings that first gave me the idea last year of getting together.    So, mmmmwwwwhhhhhaaaa (that's a virtual kiss)

MWAH!  Back to you as well (and one for Willie too!)

HI Jeff,

I'm glad to hear your MRI showed no growth -- that's always good news.  It sounds like you're going to be very busy getting to the bottom of the cause of your extreme dizziness.  You do kind of sound like Sherlock Holmes -- following all leads available in such a methodical way.  I'm sure you're anxious to get some answers and I'm sure you will.  My best guess is the location of your AN is to blame -- I'm no expert, but perhaps this is a question you should ask.   Good luck and be sure to let us know what you learn.

Wendy,
I posted this about 30 minutes ago, but since it didn't seem to take am repeating it.

Today I received a telephone call from Dr. John House of HEI.  He said that given that (1) my AN is so small at 4mm, and (2) I have no hearing loss to speak of, he suspects my serious and variable dizziness might even be unrelated.  He suggested getting a video nystagmagram (VNG) to measure my balance function.  I will pursue this.  He was really nice and thoughtful, and said certainly don't jump into surgery until I know what I've got.

Hey Jeff-

I also talked to Dr. House - he was my first consult.  Really nice and very forthcoming.  I liked him a lot.  Interesting what he said about the dizziness. (As if having a brain tumor isn't enough!!)

Jeff,

I'm glad you're getting some answers -- or at least suggestions on what to pursue next -- as you continue your research. And I'm glad that you received your consult from Dr. John House. He's extremely nice and thoughtful on the phone ... and even better in person! He's the surgeon who performed my translab and is very much one of my heros!
