Title: Anissa's Updates
Post by: vossman on April 01, 2009, 10:24:47 am
Hello everyone!!  Just wanted to let everyone know that Anissa was taken back for prep for surgery at about 8:45 this morning.  I was worried that I wouldn't be able to update because the internet was down all day yesterday.  Luckily things are working so far so I thought I would take a chance a do a quick update.  We woke up at about 4:00am this morning and couldn't sleep anymore so we got ready and walked over to the hospital at about 6:15am.  We checked in and we headed up to the surgical waiting area and they called her name right at 7:00am.  We headed back and she got dressed the hospital attire and then we waited while they came and took her blood and had her sign some final consent forms.  Oddly enough the resident nurse from the neurology told us that his wife had had an AN about 4 or 5 years ago and that she did great.  He even said that she is a palates instructor now and she has no balance issues.  That was a bit of good news for us and we just realized how small of a world this is and just how many other AN people are out there.  One in every 100,000????  I guess that number is harder to believe every day as we meet more and more people.

Anyway I can't say a whole lot more right now because I am still waiting for that first update.  It might take a little longer to get her ready because they had to be careful positioning her neck because of her chari malformation.  The neurology surgeon said they would take special care not position her so that it would cause "corking" of her spine.  As soon as I hear more I will update again.

I would again like to say thank you so very much to Patti, Andrea, and Denise for coming to see us yesterday and for all the information and words of encouragement.  Anissa and I appreciated that very much.  Thanks for "paying it forward"!!

Until later,
Chris

Chris:

Thanks for the update. How are YOU doing?

After my dx, I was introduced to a co-worker who had an AN removed 1.5 yrs before. Yes, it is a small world. I believe that the 1 in 100,000 refers to new cases per year. That's 3,000 new AN patients per year in the US alone.

I'll be watching for updates.

Chris,
Got my pacing shoes on.  Waiting expectantly, but I know it will be past my bedtime when she gets to recovery, being three hours behind (Is that right?).
Anyway, good luck.

Just got the first update from the nurse at 11:15am.  The nurse told me that everything was going really well and that they had been underway since about 10:00am.  They were in the process of drilling to get to the AN.  She said that they should be getting their soon and that she would call with another update in approximately 2 hours.

Things here are going well and I'm just trying to keep busy as that seems to pass the time faster than anything else.  I forgot to mention earlier that Anissa had great spirits and had the game face on.  I just hope that I can be as strong for her later as she was for me today.  I will be eagerly awaiting the very next update and I will post just as soon as I get more information.

Thanks for the updates Chris. We won't call then, sounds like the hospital is doing a good job of keeping you informed and we want to leave the phone freed up for that.

Hang in there! She's on her way to being a postie!  ;D

Chris,

I know you'll be able to be strong for her.  Somehow, when you least expect it, you seem to find the strength you need to support the ones you love.

Sounds like things are right on schedule and moving along well.  I'm sure it's going to be a long day for you - don't forget to take care of yourself - the doctors and nurses have Anissa well taken care of - so today you can just focus on you.

Looking forward to hearing more updates!

Hey Chris,

well, you are very welcome to hang here, harrass the gang and of course, keeping us updated as best as you can.

I'm thrilled that they are taking great care of my AN/Chiari sister in crime (anissa and I kinda compared notes on it. I'm thrilled that they took special precautions for her neck for today)....so, will check back here from time to time (when I'm not chasing Lori and Jan around here to keep them in line... ok, add Ernie to that list..... ;) ) and sending wellness wishes along.

don't forget to get yourself some food (yep, gotta do it.....).... hang in there and as you can see, we're all sending wishes along......

Hey Chris,
It was great meeting with you guys yesterday.  Thanks for keeping the forum updated. I was awake at 4am too, thinking about Anissa remembering how I was feeling the morning of my surgery. Guess I was having sympathy insomnia :D.  It will be a long day for you, she gets to sleep while you do all the worring ???.  She is in good hands. Anxiously waiting to hear she is done and the tumor is out. I'll see you again on Sat.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the updates. I know how hard it is to wait: I think my husband suffered considerably while they had me in surgery.  He was a rock throughout my recovery and I'm sure you will do the same.  (I'm waiting for a friend to come out of minor surgery as we speak!)

Hang tough.

Just got the second update at 1:15 from the nurse.  She said everything was progressing and they were still working on removing AN.  She said the would call back in another 2 hours for another update.  She said that both surgeons were working on her.

Thanks, again, Chris.

The skull drilling takes a long time - for obvious reasons - but Anissa's surgeons seem to be past that stage, now, and actually getting to remove the tumor.  This is a very critical part of the operation, of course.  Try to relax as best you can, eat something and, most important, know that Anissa - and you - are in the prayers of many, today, and that is no small thing.

By the time I'm back online (tomorrow) Anissa will be in the ICU but I'll be thinking of and praying for you both.  Thanks again for taking the time to update us.  Anissa will be O.K. and you'll be there to help and support her as she recovers.  That will be the best 'medicine'.  I know she wants to move past this (as I did) and that will help her recovery.

Jim

Lori, It's always someone else that starts it.  I'm just the one that gets the blame!  ;)

Hi Chris,

Sounds like things are moving along as they are supposed to.  What a perfect April fools joke.  She gets to sleep all day while you're stuck in the waiting room!  Worse yet, you have an angry mob of bystanders here in cyberspace wondering why they're only getting updates every 2 hours!  ;D

Seriously though, we really appreciate the updates and our prayers continue to be with you and Anissa.

Still hanging in there.  Just got another update a few minutes ago and the nurse said the neuro surgeon is still working on removing the AN.  The nurse did say that the last bit of the tumor was really hanging on and was having to work very slowly to get it off the nerve.  The nurse said Anissa is doing well and told us to hang in there.  That is the update as of 5:15pm.

Thank you for your support and keep us lifted up please.

Hi Chris

Denise here - so great to meet you and Anissa yesterday (and Andrea and Patti  :)) - you have both been on my mind and in my prayers all day - have only been able to check in a couple of times but so very glad that things are progressing well and the Drs are taking their good time to give Anissa the very best possible result.  Stay strong and hope you can feel the power of all the good thoughts and prayers being sent to you both by so many today.

Hi Chris,

Just got here, and got caught up on the news.  Everything sounds great.

Buy the way did you eat something ;D Sounds funny doesn't it :D It's true though, as you go through this waiting and later traveling to and from the hospital you'll forget to take care of yourself.  That's what we're here for, to remind you that we care and are thinking about you and Anissa.

It's great that they are keeping you so well informed, they stopped updating me after 3:00 p.m. and I had to sit and wonder until 6:44 p.m. when they finally called and said Scarlett's surgery was over.  Man, I'll tell ya, the time goes by so fast it doesn't seem like it was only two weeks ago today.  By the way this is another reason we're here, to ramble ;D :D ;D :D

We've been thinking about the two of you all day and hoping everything goes good, it really does sound like it is.

We are hanging right here for you, and sending our prayers.  I hope it's comforting to know how many people are here right now, just for you and Anissa.  Hey did you eat something :D :D :D

Latest update for Anissa.  Things are going well and the neuro surgeon met with us just a few minutes ago and told us that they are closing up.  He said that she did well and that he was able to get the tumor out.  He said that her facial nerve was doing good and that we should be able to see her in an hour of two.  There was 2mm of the tumor that was really attached to the facial nerve and that is why the surgery took so long.

Anyway praises from here and I sure appreciate your concern and support!!

Awesome news Chris! Yeah! Home stretch time, then you'll be able to see her!

Just remember, anything she says is from anesthesia, and the first 3 days don't count (because they are horrible). Did we mention the ginger ale for the nausea yesterday? I can't remember. Anyway, it sure helped me for about 2 weeks after surgery.

Way to hang in there! You're one tough dude! Hopefully Anissa's parents are being tough too!

Well, you know, there always has to be a good sister.  Before I met you, I actually was the good sister in my family  ;D

Sorry, for the hijack, Chris.

I'm so glad to hear that Anissa's surgery went well.  The next few days will be tough - no reason to sugar coat it - but she'll get through it.  I found post op that I felt better each and every day.  Getting out of the hospital usually helps to speed that along, too - you know, more sleep, better food, etc.

Take care of yourself in addition to taking care of Anissa.  You've been through a lot too.

Please keep us updated.

Thanks,

Jan

Yea, so glad it is over. This is micro surgical nerve surgery. It still blows me away that there are talented surgeons out there who do this  comfortably and competently.
Congrats on making it through the day. You had the hard day, now it's Anissa's turn >:(

Long day but we are on the other side now YEAH!!!  Finally got to see Anissa tonight at about 8:45pm and she was doing great.  The nurse in the surgical waiting room told us that we couldn't see her until after 8:30pm so we were a little late and she was already sending out the search parties to look for us.  Can't help it if the cafeteria was 1/2 mile walk.  Oh well she was doing great and we were able to visit with her for about 2 hours because she was doing well.  I would have never expected her to be laughing and talking on the phone to one of her friends.  No signs of any facial nerve issues and the doctors said she was doing exceptionally well for being in a 11 hour surgery.

Anyhow things are going well and I think Anissa will have a good recovery.  I want to thank you all for the concern and support through this whole process.  I know that each and everyone of you is a credit to her success.  I'm going to rest now and prepare myself for the road ahead.  I know now that she will need me to be as strong as I can for her.

Chris

That is great news Chris,

The hard part is over.  All the worrying and wondering.  It sounds like she's going to do fine, congratulations!

You've had a long day Chris, time to take care of you.  The best thing you can do for Anissa is to take care, so she don't have to worry, just rest and recover.  Scarlett was worried about me constantly.  I had to reassure her that I had been taking care of the Boys (our cats), eating, getting my rest, and keeping our new friends up dated.  Quite honestly I couldn't wait to do the updates.  I'd feed the Boys, do the updates, then eat, and go to bed.

Super news,

I bet Chris is getting some much needed sleep! :).  Anissa, on the other hand, is being woken up every couple of hours to make sure she remembers her name and where she is  ;)

Congratulations on a wonderful surgical outcome!  I was real grumpy when I woke up.  I even welcomed my wife to my side by vomitting on her (sorry!).  That was in post-op recovery, and my nurse was across the room somewhere with no way to get her attention.

I know I didn't talk on the phone OR use my laptop the DAY OF SURGERY!  Wow!  Amazing indeed!

JO,
At pre-admission testing now.  Met with neurosurgeon to sign consent form again as mine had expired due to being bumped from February date.  Next was chest xray.  Checked my laptop to be sure it is up to speed with wireless network so Dave can work for the five days he'll be living here.  Checked out the family waiting area which was packed with people and tension . . . rather unpleasant if you ask me, but there are pleasant areas beyond its walls.
I'll let you know what transpires in this place as soon as I can.  It, too, is packed with people waiting to be served.
Nancy
Oh, when Dr. Barker listed possible complications, I said, "Yes, but not with you guys.  You're the best."  He tried not to smile.

Take good care of her Chris,  try to keep the residents away....good luck!

Chris and Anissa,

The hard part is over, so let's raise a toastie!
Our dear wench Anissa is a brand new Postie!

I was thinking of you yesterday while I was hanging out in the Tube O' Gloom getting my tummy MRI'd.  This whole thing is in your rearview mirror now--let the healing begin! Hope your recovery is a smooth sail and you get home to those young-uns soon.

Take care,

Anissa ~

I'm about 14 hours late - but congratulations on a successful surgery and what appears to be a spectacular recovery!  I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I slept for most of the 36 hours or so following my surgery.  I feel like such a slacker, these days, with reports of you chatting on the phone within hours of your surgery and Ernie being discharged a day after his operation!  Well, I still think I did O.K. (I'm not as young as you folks) but I have to offer kudos to you, Anissa for your spirit and obvious resilience and much appreciation to your intrepid hubby, Chris, for taking the time to post updates.  Once again, I think prayers were answered.  Keep up the good work Anissa, and post as soon as you're up to it.  Thanks.  :)

It's me!!  I'm alive!  I made it!

Ok, I'll type until I get too tired to continue.  As you know, 11 hours, whew, poor Chirs and my parents.  My parents were not prepared at all and from the little poll we had here we figured on about 8 hours, hoping of course not to go longer.  They really worked and worked on that facial nerve and they still had to leave some cells, 2mm of tumor.  :(  However, they honored my wishes and left it there to preserve the nerve.  I'm not sure exactly what that means, if its just a thin strip stuck to the nerve or what.  The Dr. told my parents that there was a 90-95% chance that it wouldn't re-grow.

When they woke me up my first question was "did you get it all?" no answer then "how long have I been out?"  When they told me how long I just started asking for Chris, know that was too long and he must be worried sick.  After they found out I was finished they went to grab a bite to eat because they hadn't eaten since breakfast, figuring a 4-6 hour ordeal and didn't want to leave.  What he didn't tell you was that everybody was looking for them and when they finally found me the first words I said was "where have you been???"  I feel bad now and apologized.

I am on steroids and percoset.  The steroids should stop today.  The doctor told me that since they worked so hard on the facial nerve that he would be surprised if I didn't have facial weakness/paralysis but since the nerve is working fine so far that it would only be temporary.  My blood sugar is being monitored, its really high (205 this morning and just now 170) because of the steroids.  I had a shot of insulin this morning.

I've just been moved to my regular room and they say discharge on Saturday.  I've walked a little bit (to the bathroom) but plan on hitting the hall in a few minutes.  I did call my bff last night mostly because she's the one that had to put up with my bad jokes and gory details when she probably didn't really want to.  Coming out of the anesthesia was not bad, they didn't gas me, all through IV.  I visited with Chris and my parents for 2 hours after the surgery and actually laughed a lot.

Well, I'm worn out for now.  I'm walking a bit and considered a "rock star" in the ENT Dept.   :D :D  Oh and good news, they are taking my IV out so I'm pretty much free from machines.  Believe me, after having two IV lines, an arterial line, and all the sensors its such a relief.  Now, if only I can get a look at my head...

Hi Anissa,

So glad you are doing so well.  You look great :)

Chris was excellent with the up-dates.  I don't know how I would have done on the play by play, but he did great ;D

Scarlett had a long day, and is laying down on the couch next to me, and wants me to tell you:  "It sounds like your going to stay in the hospital about the same amount of time as I did.  But, I didn't get up and walk around until the third day, then home on Saturday.  I was absolutely useless the first two days, and I am amazed at your energy.  Sending my wishes for a continued quick recovery".

Anissa is going to get some good rest tonight.  We got moved into a quiet room late this afternoon and they let her rest without interruptions for much longer periods.  We just got through with a nice walk down to the nurses station and back.  She did the walking all on her own all I did was was hold her gown and get in her way I think.  Walking down the halls 24 hours after brain surgery :o I'm in amazement myself.  Good Job my dear wife -- I love you so much!! :-*

Anissa/Chris ~

As seems to be the norm, I'm the caboose on the end of a long train of congratulatory messages - but I had to post a comment.  Chris did an excellent job of updating us and seems to be a really good guy who cares about you - a lot.  I think you should keep him.  ;)

Your immediate post-op recovery appears to streaking along at a rapid pace and I'm sure you're going to do just fine.  In fact, I never doubted it.  :)  You appear to be much like my wife, Tina, in the sense that you're a practical lady who just gets on with it and so, has a relatively fast recovery, following surgery (she's had many - mostly spinal).

It seems as if all the recent AN surgical patients that post here have experienced an unusually swift recovery, which is a very encouraging portent for you, Anissa.  Get the rest you need and move about as much as you can, when you can.  You look great in the photo you sent us and I'm sure there are even better days ahead.  :)

Jim

Pistol???????  just a feisty ole Pirate Wench,  me dear Cap'n Deb taught me well.... LOL

Hey,  just got back from the Hospital and saw the "ROCK STAR" .  Anissa is amazing.  This is truley one of those fabulous success stories. She looks "JUST MARVELOUS" and even seems to have  somewhat of an appetite, complaining about the food (now that's a good sign ;), I never even looked at the food let alone ate any of it). She was yaking on the phone when I got there.  Her smile is just as beautiful today as it was the day before surgery.  She didn't even seem groggy, but guess she was a bit "drugged"  ahhhh, I remember these pain meds  :D  Her dear hubby Chris is doing a fabulous job keeping the seat warm right next to her, I told him not to leave her side while in that hospital, and I don't think he has for a minute. She is truely a lucky woman to have him.  The two of them are very dear folks and I am so pleased this went so well. I am so happy to have met them.

Take Care dear ANissa,   and well see ya when you come down for the check up appt. in May.

Love & Hugs

Hi everybody! I'm getting sprung from the hospital today although I'm a little indifferent about it.  I'm a little scared to go home honestly.  I'm still very dizzy and am afraid of having a sensory overload with the kids but I miss them so much, ah...  We are going to stay one more night in SLC just to get my bearings and head home tomorrow (Sunday).  Although I've had good results regarding nausea and facial nerve (no probs) it still has been painful and slow.  My balance seems to be fine, I'm walking on my own, I just can't do it for too long.  Instead of feeling better each day I think today might be the hardest so far but I might contribute that to feeling the full effects.  The Dr. took my bandage off this morning and I have dissolve-able stitches and there is some bruising.  I can't shower for a couple more days (ugh!) and my hair is matted down in places.  I guess I'm a little whiny today, sorry.  In talking to the neurosurgeon he said that he actually left less than 1 mm of the tumor on the nerve which is significantly less than the 2mm I told you earlier, he said it was not enough to be seen on an MRI so we'll see.  Anyway, that is the report for today.  I'm expecting some visitors from my hometown and I am totally excited about that, its just what I need today.

Did anyone else have mixed feelings about going home or just feel so overwhelmed by all thats happened?  I know it'll be great to get out of here, its just hard to imagine returning to my life after all this.  Thanks for listening!

Hi Anissa,

I am actually kind of glad you are reporting a little bit of post surgery effects. You were sounding so cheerful, I was beginning to wonder if they really did the surgery!  :D

I suspect you are realizing that even though you did really well, you did just have a major surgery, and will be in recovery for a while now. You will need lots of sleep, and will be feeling new things as the medications wear off and the body starts healing up all the trauma it has been through. I think most people find that being at home is more comfortable, and that the food is better, but you won't be back in your usual routine right away. Let your butler Chris do all the work!

Take care and congratulations on your excellent outcome.

Steve

Good advice, Steve.
Of course you are nervous to go home with all the noise and confusion. You may find yourself feeling worse once you get home, so it is important to listen to your body and rest/rest/walk/rest/eat/sleep/walk/rest.......
Repeat cycle.
No dusting, laundry, cleaning, embroidering.

take care and good luck :-*

Hi, Anissa ~

Although I have to salute and admire your hyper-hasty recovery, I can see from your post that you're beginning to notice the effects of the surgery and, better yet, acknowledging them.  As I've previously stated, I completely understand your impatience to get back to normal but please don't try to set records, just follow your doctors instructions and your body's signals, especially when the 'REST' sign goes off.  :)  I'm sure that being home, in familiar, comfortable surroundings, with your family nearby, your recuperation will be expedited.

You're an inspiration - an excellent model of an AN surgical patient that had a successful removal operation and is recovering nicely, without any real complications.   May that continue until you're totally healed and recovered and can put this experience in your past and one day say: "well, that happened".  :)

Hi Anissa!

Actually, your recovery sounds pretty similar to mine.  Once I was home, I started to feel a bit worse.  The pain pills weren't doing their job, and my head felt more full.  Turns out it was swelling, and a round of steroids did wonders for that!

Like everyone here has been saying, listen to your body.  If you aren't feeling well, then rest.  When you feel a bit better, try to get up and get around.  Go on some walks, hit the malls, spend some money :)

Keep us updated...

Hi Anissa,

I felt nervous about leaving the hospital too.  Although I was desperate to leave and get some decent sleep I didn't feel quite ready either as I was still walking really slowly... however having said once I got out my recovery came on leaps and bounds as I forced myself to walk around more and once I got some real sleep.  I made sure I had naps from 3-5 every day which REALLY helped.  Don't know if you'll be able to do that with the kids - but it really really helped.  I'm doing some more stuff now - my sister dragged me to a giant shopping mall the other day and although I was absolutely exhausted afterwards (and a bit grumpy) it was good practice.  I guess the main thing is let people look after you - I found that pretty hard, but it has to happen, you'll know when you're able to look after yourself and start doing things yourself.

One thing - why can't you have a shower?  The nurses got me up for a shower the second day after surgery.  They helped me of course and I sat in a chair for it, but it was definitely fantastic to have running water on my skin.  Could you wear a shower cap to cover the wound and still have a shower with someone helping you?

Anissa,

You are a great inspiration to me as I adjust to the idea of this surgery (waiting some more analysis by drs.).

Anyway, having never had any kind of surgery before myself (I'm starting at the top), :o I suppose there is probably almost a sense of euphoria at getting through the surgery with good results -- and inevitably that wears off and the "work of recovery" days begin.

I have also found that since having AN-type tumor and symptoms, I get grumpy about any new experience.  ;D It seems that I can handle repeating activities much better than adjusting to new ones. So it's natural I'd think that each "new step" in recovery will feel like a new challenge you don't really want to take on. But from what I can tell on here, these early days go by *so fast* in retrospect, you'll be back in a new routine at home in no time and on the upswing -- if not "improving every day," certainly improving every week!

Very best wishes during your recovery!  :)

Anissa,

Once a mother always a mother :)  I understand your hesitations about going home.  Your children are still very young and need mommy.  I'm sure with your husband support the transition will be smooth.  Listen to your body, when it says "enough, I need to rest" you rest.

The house work, the laundry and meals can all wait.  The hugs, kisses and big smiles from your babies are going to help the healing process.

Be well,
Anne Marie

Hi folks!  Just wanted to post an update on my recovery.  I can't believe its been so long since I posted about it!  I was so glad that I went home, leaving the hospital was the best thing I could have done for my morale and my recovery!!  Here is the excerpt from my blog:

I can’t believe its almost been two weeks since surgery! Life is starting to come around again and I am so thankful for that. Chris took the last two weeks off work (week of surgery and first week home) and went back in the afternoons only this week. My mom has been here most every day during the week to help with the housework. Friends are still dropping meals off each day and I can’t tell you what a huge blessing that is. I’m still not driving although I think I’m getting close to trying. The constant pain has dwindled and I’m down to one pain pill at night to help me sleep and ibuprofen during the day. I still have some cobwebs in my head, by that I mean dizzy and tired, but I’m starting to get used to it and am doing a bit more. My scar is starting to look good and my hair is coming in again. Its amazing what two weeks will do.

Nice! Two weeks, all better. :)

The scar will probably heal up completely before you do. Some people report that at three weeks, the recovery seems to slow down, just when it was getting good, and it can be a little disappointing. But it sounds like you are doing fine, and the rest of the discomfort and cobwebs will get better, even if you have to wait for it.

Best wishes to you and Chris.

Steve

Whoa!  Even today, 6 weeks out of surgery, my scar doesn't look nearly that healed.  Just today I was getting some pinkish oozing from a small part of it, but it looks like some hair might be growing into it?  Hard to say.

Also, I have much less hair regrowing where they did the surgery.  I'll have to get another picture soon to post.

Huh?  That's the first I've heard of that, Steve.  Great, now I really won't be able to get to sleep.
May be time to bake muffins.   ;D

Anissa and Chris,

Hi!  So glad to see the pic, you both look great!
Who would ever guess you had brain surgery, Anissa?
I hope your healing continues - and just hug those babies, they grow up WAY too fast!
-------
Hijack - Nancy:  Muffins, i want homemade muffins!
May i suggest you TAKE the muffins to Ernie - those warm Florida breezes - maybe you can write off the trip on your insurance as post 'treatment!'
(Like have PT or VT, LOL!)
And i will be happy to come help you carry the muffins southward!

Sue

Anissa,

You look so good!  The scar looks really good.  My son was dying to go to Wal-Mart yesterday so I took him.  We made it home safe and sound.  I was a little worried because of my eye and drove most of the time with my finger over the bad one.  It was nice to drive again though.  I am so glad you have had so much help in your recovery.  Nothing like family!  Tara

Anissa -

incredibly beautiful scar   ;D  Mine healed fast, but not that fast  :o

Great picture of you and Chris - you're looking very good for someone who had AN surgery recently.

Tara -

congratulations on the "Driving to Walmart" milestone.  You did good!!!  ;D

muffin hijack - it's so nice up here this week, i'm not leavin' for anywhere!
I am getting really nervous about driving.  I totally relate to going around with a finger holding my eye down.  Did we have the same surgery?  ;D   Going out to get an eye patch in a few minutes and a box of thank you notes.  I get stitches out on Monday, too, can't wait.  Sorry my hair will still be gross at the brunch, Guys.

I'm a complete believer in peroxide and neosporine on the scar even weeks after surgery.  Especially living in the tropics, Ernie!

Hard to believe your scar is 2 weeks old Anissa--keep up the good healing!

Anissa,
You look absolutely fantastic. So happy with hubby on the couch, and baby watching nearby.
I knew things would work out for you. Just pace yourself, girl, and don't overdo it.
Your scar looks beautiful. No scar tissue.
Once it is completely healed, don't forget the Vit E  squeezed out of the capsule and rubbed on the incision.
My incision had a lumpy area on the bottom that wasn't there when the incision healed (ast least I don't think it was).

HIJACK- and Nancy you are doing superb too!  2 great outcomes.

Have to be careful with too much peroxide as can harm tissue regrowth.      I know my surgeon had us do some cleansing with diluted peroxide post op but didn't use it too long.

WOW!  I'm almost a year out and my scar doesn't look that good!  Of course, I also keep my head shaved very close so I can show it off to everyone. ;)

Congrats on things going so well for you after surgery.

Fab scar!  You look super dooper!

Your hair grows really fast!  I'm not sure mine is that long 5 weeks out!  I'll have to take a picture of it to check!

Anissa ~

You're looking great!  Nice family photo.  Your scar is healing rapidly, just as mine did.  I'm sure the cobwebs and other issues will abate in no time, although it's never quick enough.

Thanks for the update and photos.

Jim

Thanks for all your kind words!  I had invisible (dissolvable) stitches on my head and belly.  The divet in my belly is gone, they had to attach it to muscle when they sewed it up so it looked really funny (don't laugh at my fat  :D) but its popped out now.  My belly is now a visual history of three c-sections and that one time that I needed fat for my brain surgery.   ;) ;D  Does anybody else think it sounds funny or weird to say that?  I spoke with a friend the other day and when I said "I had brain surgery" I almost started laughing because it sounds so preposterous.  Even after surgery it still seems surreal but with the aches and pains as not-so-gentle reminders.  Anyway, its all good.  Thanks again!

Last Thursday I had my one year MRI and Dr. visit.  It was the first MRI since my diagnosis so I was extremely anxious to see what's going on in my head.  Both the neuro and neuro-otologist were happy, nothing to report.  They said its pretty early to be able to see anything up close but they didn't see anything obvious and thats good.  I asked for a copy of the MRI report but haven't got it yet.  It hadn't been officially read and dictated when I had my appointments.  I also had a hearing test on my hearing ear which he said was fine and they won't test it again unless I ask.  I will continue to have MRIs and visits for 5 years and then I can go longer if everything looks good.  They are keeping a close eye on it because of the little bit they left.

I feel good, balance is wonky but you know, it is what it is.  Other than that I haven't had any problems.  Still asymptomatic on the Chiari Malformation so nothing to talk about there.  All in all a good visit.   ;D  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, you are such a sweet bunch, I don't know what I would have done without you.  Thank you again!

Anissa

Hi Anissa!

Congratulations on getting good news regarding your MRI -- I'm sure that's a load off your mind.   ;D  I'm sending best wishes for good health for the future.  Hopefully you will always be asymptomatic for the Chiari Malformation.  As for the wonky balance, our ANs are the gift that keeps on giving and many of of have that problem.  I hope you have more good days than bad ones.

I also have those mind hiccups, you know like yesterday when I went to find the cereal after the girls went to school and when I didn't find it in the pantry I immediately when to the fridge and of course it was in there.  Oh yeah, and I keep putting my two-year-old's shoes on the wrong feet.  I don't know if its because I'm just tired or what but I'll blame the AN because its just a darned good reason ;)

I blame whatever I can on the AN.  :D Really! Brain Trauma, you know? I have heard that it takes 5 years to recuperate from brain trauma, and brain surgery is considered brain trauma.
I have 1.2 years left to blame it on the brain trauma, then I'll blame everything on something else.  :D

Keri, thanks for asking about my little ones!  They are doing great and growing oh too fast.  My oldest girls are in first grade, just about out for summer already.  Jackson is contemplating kindergarten in the fall and Addison just turned two.  We're going to have a great summer!

Thanks for all your kind words.  I had about worried myself sick about the whole check-up process and was fairly certain in my own mind that I'd be looking at a big re-growth.  Even after my appointment I wasn't 100% sure but I got the MRI report in the mail yesterday and as I suspected they can see what they left.  According to the report:

"Status post right transmastoid resection of right acoustic neuroma with fat packing extending into the IAC.  There is a nodular enhancement along the right CP angle at the site of prior surgery.  These finding most likely representing granulation tissue however recurrence in this area is not excluded."

So, I am taking that as - so far so good.  They didn't measure it so it must just be barely noticeable.  Next year they probably won't even be able to see it.   ;D
