The knitted hats are famous the world over!  Steve the legend knits them for people he likes.  He never knitted me one.  Bastard.  Ha ha... just kidding Steve!  He knows I can knit my own... that's the real reason (I think??!!)!  I think the story goes, he knitted one for himself and put a picture up and the AN'ers loved it so much they all wanted one - he's a busy boy... knit knit pearl pearl!

Well, it all started out as kind of a joke - but then Steve went ahead and learned how to knit.

I for one was shocked  :o  I'll admit it - again - I never thought he'd do it.  But one day he showed up on the Forum with a blue hat.  Then I got a green one in the mail.  Then Phyl got one.  Then DHM got one.  And on and on and on.  Who knew that Steve was so talented  ;D

Here's a thread that might interest you  http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=8598.0

Also check out Steve's website http://stevegerrard.home.comcast.net/~stevegerrard/Hats/index.html     The website is missing a picture of the Steelers' hat that Steve knit for LA David.  Someone stole it out of David's mailbox, so he was never able to send us a picture  :(

LA David's had his stolen?  :o  :o  Didn't know about that!  Shows just how valuable "nimble fingers" hats truly are... as I value mine immensely!

I didn't get one either!  But that didn't stop me from getting a really nice black one with a little skull on it -- it is a skateboarding hat -- and all my son's friends (9yo) think it is very cool!

Well than, I might have to go out and buy myself a hat or just steal one of my little guys...he's got a bunch of them and won't miss one if it suddenly disappeared one day.  I'm certainly not going to take up knitting...might poke myself in my good eye and than I'd really be screwed!  :o

LA David's was, like the others, special made BUT it was even more special b/c it was the Steelers' colors as he LOVEs them.  Steve mailed it and apparently someone took it out of the mailbox before he received it.  It all started on the Book Club thread when Steve stated that he didn't think he wanted to read The Friday Night Knitting Club.  He definitely shocked us all when he had taught himself to knit off the internet!

Doc,
Yes, I thought the same when I joined the forum. Who is this "Steve-  May I knit you a hat?"
He is very busy and will have to start charging $$$$$$$$$$$ soon. Or else change his sig!
..........I can knit you a hat but it will cost you......
He's great. I met him in Portland  couple of weeks ago.

When I first joined the forum, everyone was buzzing back and forth about Steve’s hats. I was on the forum doing my research and followed the hat thread quietly. The way everyone joked with each other made me realize how much everyone cared about each other, and that a good sense of humor was good medicine and still possible with an AN.

Some of us have chosen colors to match our winter coats.  My color is PEAT.  Unfortunately, I won't have it in time for my trip to Scotland and Ireland where it is cold and there is a lot of PEAT.  (It's so much fun teasing Steve.  ;D  I'm sure he's eating up all the attention.)  How did those new shoes do for ya, Steve?  (See if we get a response.  Then we'll know he's following the thread.)

Or did I miscombobulate what I thought you said?  If so, probably due to lingering effects from the latest visit to the tube of gloom.  :o

Does anyone get the feeling that Steve is purposely avoiding posting on this thread  ???

Perhaps he's already up to his needles in hat orders and doesn't want to read how many more await him  ;)

Here's the link about David's stolen hat http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=9604.0

I didn't take the time to read the entire 4 pages, but I recall someone saying (perhaps in this thread) that somewhere in LA there's a bum wearing a really nice Steelers hat.

I didn't get a hat either.  I just thought it was because my surgery was at the end of June this year.  Summer.  No time for knitted hats.  I won't mention that this past June/July were the coldest on record!  Thank goodness I'd had my hairdresser coif me a style that allowed for a pretty good combover.

Hey you-all have not mentioned that Steve is also an amazing poet.

There is no doubt about it -Steve is my favorite Renaissance man  ;D he has MUCH talent. We are lucky to have him here in the Pacific Northwest. So you-all know he is also now an ANA support group co-leader.  :-*

Hmmm now where is the thread that has that great holiday poem he wrote? ... Jan can you help me here?

BTW,  you can buy a hat knitting kit at wally world for about $12.  makes it really simple tio knit a hat or scarf. My kids make em all the time.

Molly, I don't think Steve's ignoring you, but as Sara said, the hat waiting list is long - and Steve has his moderator's gig, his "real" job, etc.

Don't feel bad Jan, you are one step ahead of me!

On a related note, I would think a baseball hat is too tight to wear comfortably post-op.  Sounds like the Hat Man ("...cause I'm the hat man, yeaaaaah I'm the hat maaaaaaannnnnnn...") is flooded with requests right now, so any suggestions for a comfortable post-op lid would be appreciated.

very good question; never thought about it myself.  We women have a lot of options - straw hats, scarves, etc. - but I never gave the guys a second thought (nothing personal).  Perhaps a bandana?

DHM ~

I don't believe that everyone (male or female) necessarily looks good in a hat, no matter the style, although some folks look better than others in certain styles.

I look terrible in a hat - any hat.   I've tried on cowboy hats, baseball caps, fedoras, etc and look ridiculous in all of them.  I just don't have a the correct type of face for a hat to look good (broad features).  I look especially unattractive in a knit cap/hat, which is why I haven't asked Steve to knit one for me.  Conversely, my wife looks adorable in almost any kid of hat - but she never wears one.   Admittedly, this is a very subjective opinion (who looks good in a hat) but I stand by my conviction that some people just shouldn't wear a hat - and I'm one of those people.  Fortunately, most folks like wearing a hat and thus keep Steve's knitting needles clicking.

I'm with Jim on this one.  Some men look ridiculous in a hat ..... my husband for one.  Thank goodness he agrees and never wears one, even when it snows!

If he ever had to have a scar from AN surgery, I hope he would just make a joke out of it by saying he got it paddleboarding, alligator wrestling ...... or some such thing.  (Those of you who met him this summer can probably agree with me that he is NOT the paddleboarding or alligator wrestling type.   ::) ::))

I respectfully disagree with this.  I think I look damn good in my hat  ;)  although my kids aren't too crazy about it  :D

Jim, I think you should change your mind and get on Steve's list.  If you decide the hat just isn't for you, I'm sure Tina would look great in it.

I'm with Jim on the hat thing!  Hats make me feel claustrophobic and probably a good thing because I don't look good in hats.  The only hat I have ever worn was a cowboy hat in my barrel racing days, but thankfully usually lost it by the second barrel!
I have certainly enjoyed seeing all of the hat wearers on the forum!

Jan/DHM ~

While the issue of who looks good in a hat (of any style) is purely subjective, I stand my my position that I don't look good in a hat (any style).  I base this opinion on many decades of observation as well as my wife's supporting opinion (and she loves me).  Those who believe they look good in a hat should certainly wear one.  My opinion relates only to me, although I reserve the right to hold the view that some people (mostly men) really don't look good in a hat.  Just as some people - male or female - shouldn't wear tight pants - but that's a whole different thread!  :D

Lori - what about a Speedo/sombrero combo?  Now THAT would be unique (and stomach wrenching too.)

On a slightly more serious note - How sensitive is the incision as it heals?  Could a regular baseball cap be worn a week or two post op?  Or just loose fitting hats?
Title: Re: New Guy Question - What's the Deal w/The Knitted Hats???
Post by: joebloggs on October 09, 2009, 11:59:24 am

I personally wouldn't have worn a regular baseball cap that soon after my op - I only got the staples out 10 days post op and still had a dressing on it a couple of days after that.  The incision wasn't sensitive for me, a bit itchy as it healed - but I certainly left it alone - I wouldn't want anything like a tight hat rubbing against it really.  Perhaps a good rule of thumb might be avoid tight hats until you can comfortably sleep on your scar side?  Maybe 3-4 weeks?  From what I've read though some people's scar stays quite sensitive for a while.  Is it coming into winter where you are?  I'd go for a beanie/toque if you can?  This is a pic of my scar covering head gear of choice on the day I had my staples out (the headband is covering my dressing just before going in to get my staples removed).  It's just a knitted headband - not much good for blokes probably, but perhaps you could get some kind of skiing headband thing?

P.S. Still is taken from film footage so not very good quality - sorry!

DR -

I think you'd look stunning in a knitted head band!  Something in a more masculine color and pattern, of course.

I wore a baseball hat when my husband made me go to my daughter's soccer practice the day I came home from the hospital - but it was adjustable and I kept it loose.  Of course, half of my head was still numb at that point, so I probably could have tightened it up and not felt it anyway!

JO, speedos are bad enough at the beach, but they should definitely be outlawed for lawn mowing attire!   :P
