Just wondering about all the ladies out there with balance issues - what type of shoes are you wearing through the day?
I gave up heels a year ago and opted for loafer type or nice slip on shoes at work. Running shoes at home. My last new pair of slip on shoes have a softer sole and are lightweight and I think I actually wander more with them than shoes with more support! With spring (here in the north) I've noticed more stability in my hiking boots than my regular shoes, but wearing hiking boots all day at work isn't quite the look I'm going for. ;D So, it got me wondering what are other AN women walking around wearing - especially during their work day?
Cheers!

I am a nurse, so I am lucky. I get to wear sneakers most of the time, never cared for heels anyway. I do find I like my Keen shoes and merrell hiking boots. My shoes don't pose a problem though. I just lose my sense of balance when I turn at times, walk into a lot of door jams! The shoes I wear do not seem to add to the problem or help it either. Happy walking : )

I am fortunate enough to be able to wear sneakers to work also. I have found Brooks to be very supportive as I have high arches. I have not found a pair of dress shoes to this day in which I have the support needed for my arches and balance. Please let us know if someone has had success.

I share your problem Glorianailor of walking into or bouncing off doorframes! Can't count how many times in a week I do it. My hiking boots are actually Merrell and I love them. They make some really comfy sandles for the summer.
MusicTracy, I also have high arches, so I find wearing completely flat shoes difficult. Dress shoes without a heel are pretty hard to find and I just don't trust myself with any type of dress heel. I did manage to find a really nice pair of New Balance walking shoes today that are a bit dressier than a regular running shoe. I'm definitely going for comfort this season!

I was having some foot pain and found a specialist shoe store, mostly athletic shoes but others too, that did Gait Analysis. If you search for that you'll find some. They fitted me with Brooks which helped me not to lean on my feet so much and I think that helps some. I figure like a stack of blocks, if you start out unbalanced it won't make things any easier getting around. Some chiropractors and other places have a laser device that measures how you put weight on your feet and custom foot levelers can be ordered to help. It can't hurt with general balance issues and if it helps feet, ankles, knees, back etc., then that's a bonus!

I am wearing ghastly ugly flat clarks funny dream ( I am in uk) or crocs. I have foot issues with pain/altered sensation and if I wear(or try to wear) uncomfortable (ie pretty) shoes I lose my balance even more then normal... I dream of heels... But even that makes my dizziness worse!

My wife really likes Dansco shoes for slip ons.

I am a sneaker person. I can wear them to work so that's no problem. I can wear flats to go out to dinner and stuff. But I've never been a heels person so I don't miss that

Had to give up most heels. Wedges work for me.

I stopped wearing heels years ago - not due to my AN. I rarely have an occasion to wear them since I work in a very casual office and I don't get "dressed up" that often (especially if I can help it) ;D
I typically wear some type of flat shoe - moccasins, running shoes, sandals, flip-flops, etc - but every now and then I wear something with a wedge.

Well lots of interesting replies! Looks like I'm in really good company with my flat walking shoes. :D

I like to dress up and wear heels to work a couple times a week. Balancing doesn't seem to be an issue based on the shoes. I do however find myself cutting corners too close quite often and have near-misses with doorframes and corners of walls too! One thing I've noticed is that I used to bang my hip bones on my kitchen island all the time before my surgery, and you made me realize that I haven't been doing that lately. So I definitely think my balance has gotten better!
