Title: What does your tinnitus sound like?
Post by: Jwh on February 10, 2007, 02:57:56 pm
Does anyone have a zapping or buzzing tinnitus?  I always have a high pitched roar in the background but now have acquired an occasional zapping or buzzing sound.  Anyone else?????

Thanks,
Jen

It almost sounds like a bee or fly near my ear.

Hi Jen:

Before surgery, my tinnitus was many, many different sounds.  Tons of electrical sounding sounds, crickets, whine etc...
After a post op period of six months or so, it has mellowed to one continuous eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee which only changes pitch when I move my eyes to the side.  If I am in a very loud setting, the eeeeeeeeeeeeee goes up to EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.   ;D

Mine is outrageous, when I listen to it.  I try not to describe it or listen to it.  My plan is to ignore "it" and "it" might get discouraged and be quiet! ;D  Really, most of the time I am able to block it out.  When things get very hectic and too many tasks are due at once, then the T kicks in.  To fix T I take a short eye nap.  "Rest my eyes", as Grandma used to say.

I switch back and forth between having a bee hive in my head to the holiday bell ringers. Currently it's bee hive season >:(  I also experienced what sounds like a hovering helicopter.   At least I'm not hearing voices LOL

The bee hive sounds like mine, too...Except when I'm in the car, or in the bathroom with the fan on...then I get a plink, plunk, plink off key guitar kind of noise. I suppose it's caused by vibrations.  It varies in intensity.  I hate it. :(

I prefer to think of mine as a gentle stream barbling away, with the occasional rustling leaves in the wind. Then again, at tiems it jsut sound like an electrical short, but without the blue smoke!  :)

It changes, sometimes I also get the rythmic sound of wosh wosh wosh... But mostly, I jsut ignored it, learned to do that over the years! Now, I'm not aware of it unless I lsiten.

Ciao, Lorenzo

Hi Everyone

On top of the basic and constant white noise there are many variations joining in at random . There is the burglar alarm ,
the bees ,the running tap as well as a heavy whooshing sound every now and then. Luckily they do all not perform  at once since
if they did I would have been carted off in a straightjacket long ago . As it is I somehow manage to ingnore it all and only notice it at night when it is very quiet .

Regards Kat

I think we should produce a recording and perform live in concert! Sounds a bit like John Cage at work in our brains!

Whenever I get a new sound, I amuse myself by trying to think up the most flamboyant description for it...
Recent examples are:

Flamenco dancing on a carpet  (dull but rhythmic)
Astor Piazzolla on sedatives (pops and squeaks)
flocks of hummingbirds
a skittery mouse on waxed bare boards
the slither of a snake on wet grass (strictly from imagination)

HI Caryl!

:)  Those descriptions are all worth reording for a Tinnitus Manual! I frogot the cicadas. Now I KNOW why Van Gogh cut his ear off! Only thing is, he didn't know it wouldn't help!

I usually hear what sounds like a seashell held to your ear. Sometimes I hear a faint tuning fork, but only recently heard the buzzing sound I could have a fly flew right into my ear :o

My head is full of cicadas and crickets.  Actually not too unpleasant.  YET!!!!  The first time I noticed it was at night and I thought it was coming from the open window. The rather soothed sound of the chirping insects .  Then I sat bolt upright and realized it was 20 degrees and the window was closed....It's summer time year round in my head.   :-\

WOW what a bunch of talented musicians- mine is just a dull humm- sometimes the pitch changes but really I just keep igoring it.  HMMM now I will have to listen.  (Mine hasn't bothered me to much)... I do hear it more at night but figured that's because the house was quiet :P Annie

I was just having this conversation with someone about my childhood and tinnitus...so it begs the question....did anyone else as a kid (or an adult) wake up in the middle of the night and try to rid your pillow of a bee?  I can remember being so convinced there was a bee in my pillow a few times and turning on the light and finding nothing.

My tinnitus now is like standing in a field full of crickets and cicadas...a good description.   Sometime I get a ringing like I'm standing inside a bell that will last for a few seconds.  It's very loud normally, but I've had it so long it doesn't bother me much.

I did have a tinnitus as a kid yes. At times it was as if iw as hearing a pulsing sound through one ear only. I don't recall the specifics of the sounds but it did keep me awake and at times was very loud......

Before surgery, I had intermittent tinnitus in my right ear. It sounded like electrical sounds or beeps. Sometimes I had the regular AN tinnitus too, which was just the ringing. However, I remember having the beeping noises - a year before I was diagnosed - one night as I was falling asleep. When I heard someone else's voice, an extra electrical-type sound or beep would be added to their words or sentence. I truly thought I was off my rocker for a little while. When it went away, I never thought any more about it. Thought I was just crazy for a day or two. A year later, my tinnitus started up again. Now, after surgery, tinnitus is extremely rare for me.

My Tinnitus usually is of the EEEEEEE sound but after loud noises, I hear Darth Vader like panting noises, It's awful, I hope that I will not be seduced by the dark side (of something).  I hate the inability to locate my kids, I yell up the stairs to them and they tug on my polo and say Dad, I am right next to you, ususally after the conversation is over.  We need a system, or an intercom or room cams.
Ahhhh!  I need to go to sleep!
G'night

Steve

Here is one from an NF2. First AN that I had surgery on and still too this day sounds like distant sleigh bells during xmas time. Now after radiation on 2nd tumor-it sounds like the EEEEEEEE that others discribe and gets louder if I climb steps at work which I have yet too figure out why it does that. The hardest part now for me is too hear ordinary speech and voices and sounds-unless someone is really close too me it sounds like when you have your head underwater-cannot determine what people say. If I am in an environment where people are really talking away it becomes so distracting that I prefer too leave the area. Wow what a Rush. Rons

Hi,  I thought I would join in, because I have been questioning the occassional "popping" in my AN ear.  For the most part though I just have the constant EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, like a lot of the rest of you.

Hi Everyone,
I hear the sound of a car window open driving down the freeway, but sometimes I hear tones like a electronic keyboard. The tune sounds slightly familiar but I can't place it. I kind of like that part Its soothing and reminds me to relax.  I had a jewish friend that swears her mom who had an AN heard onward Christian Soldiers much to her disappointment. too funny

Hi Jen!

You kidding? Join the club! My left ear feels as if it's been walled up for eternity, like a long lost Egyptian tomb, with swarms of scarrabs and cicadas buzzing about inside. The tinnitus is often as loud as the "good" sound coming in through my working ear. It also feels very "full". Sometimes the tinnitus is so bad it causes an actual sensation of vibration. Then there's the pulsating tinnitus, where you can both hear and feel the blood whooshing, pulsing and coursing through the blood vessels in your head.
That's probably the worst kind because it feels as though you're on the verge of having an aneurysm.

You will also notice that the tinnitus intensifies whenever you shift your eyes left, right or up and down.
